Jadeja and Axar: Sweep and reverse sweep are difficult here

Australia’s collapse – precipitated by an overuse of the sweep shot – and India’s subsequent romp to victory in the Delhi Test has raised a lot of questions about shot selection on spin-friendly pitches.Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, India’s two left-arm spin-bowling allrounders, said the sweep was the wrong option on pitches with low bounce and that the better strategy was to play with a straight bat in front of the pad as often as possible. Both men used that philosophy to help India get to within one run of Australia’s first-innings of 263 on the second day’s play. Jadeja scored 26, Axar top-scored with 74, and then when it looked like India were on the back foot at the start of the third day, Jadeja ran through the Australian batting order to finish with career-best bowling figures of 7 for 42.”Sweep and reverse sweep are difficult here, so I didn’t try them (laughs),” Axar – who hit nine fours and three sixes in his innings – told Jadeja in a chat for the BCCI website. “Instead I bring the bat in front of the pad and play the ball on its merit.””The last time I batted with you [Jadeja], you had told me that they were trying to aim at my pads, so I was protecting it. My thought was to hit what’s in the slot and respect the good deliveries. That is what I do. This time there was a left-arm spinner [Matthew Kuhnemann] too. ” Jadeja interjected at that point with a good-natured, “and you robbed him for runs.” Axar just laughed and continued. “No I didn’t rob him, but with a left-arm spinner operating instead of an offspinner, you get to play at a delivery turning into you.”Jadeja’s innings of 26 might not look like much but in partnership with Virat Kohli, who scored 44, they produced some of the best batting of the Test match and it was all based on being prepared for the grubber.Only Anil Kumble is in front of Ravindra Jadeja for most POTM awards in India•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“On this pitch, the mindset [with the bat] was that a good ball can come anytime,” Jadeja said. “However the idea was to believe in the defense and play with the bat in front of the pad. Me and Virat were talking about playing straight as much as possible with less bounce on offer.”Then when he had the ball in hand, and saw Australia trying to sweep everything away, he knew all he had to do was bowl straight at the stumps.”In India, if the wickets are like this, then it feels good that a spinner’s role and responsibility increases. The way they were batting, they preferred the sweep and reverse sweep, so I wanted to bowl stump to stump. That would mean if they missed and the ball stayed low then it would hit the stumps.”Related

And India cruised to a six-wicket victory before tea on day three.Jadeja, who has returned to the international fold for the first series since his knee injury last August that had needed surgical intervention, said that all three spinners in the XI have been contributing, be it big or small.”I missed a lot of cricket…the World Cup, and many other series, but once I’m back, I want to continue this way in the future, and make team India win with you [Axar] and Ashwin. This is a team game and everyone has contributed in different ways. If this happens, India’s victory march will only continue.”India play the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which they have now retained having gone 2-0 ahead, on March 1. Michael Vaughan cleared of racism charge by ECB disciplinary committee

CDC decision finds case against Vaughan not proved “on balance of probabilities”

Gardner: No winners in Yorkshire racism case despite Vaughan exoneration

Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, has been cleared by the ECB’s Cricket Discipline Committee (CDC) of bringing the game into disrepute over the alleged use of racist and/or discriminatory language before a Yorkshire match in 2009.The case against Vaughan and five other former Yorkshire players was heard earlier this month, with the CDC verdict announced on Friday morning. However, Vaughan took to Instagram in advance to reveal that the charges against him had been dismissed. He wrote: “Now that the ECB’s charge against me has been dismissed, I want to thank the panel for their careful attention in very difficult circumstances and to thank all of those who have given me their support during an incredibly difficult period in my life.”Michael Vaughan attending the CDC hearings at the International Arbitration Centre in London•Justin Tallis/AFP

The news marks the latest juncture in a lengthy and divisive process first brought about by Azeem Rafiq’s accusations of institutional racism at Yorkshire more than two-and-a-half years ago.In the CDC’s verdict, an 82-page document released at 10.30am, the panel said that the ECB’s contention that Vaughan made the comment “There’s too many of you lot, we need to do something about that” in earshot of four Yorkshire players of Asian heritage before a T20 fixture at Trent Bridge had not been proven “on the balance of probabilities”.However, the CDC found five other defendants – former England internationals Matthew Hoggard and Tim Bresnan, former Scotland seamer John Blain, and two former Yorkshire players-turned-coaches, Andrew Gale and Rich Pyrah – all guilty of bringing the game into disrepute.

The ECB laid charges against Yorkshire and seven of the club’s former players in June last year. After prolonged wrangling, the CDC hearing was held in public earlier this month, although Vaughan was the only individual to appear in person to defend himself.Yorkshire admitted the charges against them, as did Gary Ballance, the Zimbabwe and former England batter; but Hoggard, Bresnan, Blain, Gale and Pyrah all withdrew their cooperation from the process. Other than Hoggard, who offered a qualified admission of the charges laid against him, the others all denied the allegations outright.Three of the four charges against Hoggard were found to be proven by the CDC panel, including allegations that he used the term “Rafa the K*****” to refer to Rafiq. Bresnan was found guilty of one charge of using racist and/or discriminatory language, specifically the term “fit P***”; Pyrah was found to have used the same phrase. The CDC also found Gale guilty on two counts of using racist and/or discriminatory language, and Blain guilty on one.Sanctions are due to be decided at a later date and all of the defendants have 14 days in which to lodge an appeal, with Blain telling the that he would fight the verdict.Although Vaughan apologised for a number of “disgusting” historical tweets, he denied ever having made the alleged comment to Rafiq, Adil Rashid, Ajmal Shahzad and Rana Naved-ul-Haq. Vaughan’s lawyer also criticised the ECB’s handling of the case, saying the investigation had been “wholly and woefully inadequate”, and claiming Vaughan had been denied due process.Vaughan, who stepped away from his BBC commentary role last year, had previously said that his “life and livelihood” were on the line. After being cleared, he reiterated that the “dismissal of the specific charge that concerned me takes nothing away from Azeem’s own lived experiences”, and committed himself to combatting racism within cricket. However, he was critical of the ECB’s disciplinary process: “Particularly with an issue such as this, CDC proceedings were an inappropriate, inadequate and backwards step. One of many reasons why I hold that view is because CDC proceedings are adversarial. They invite claim and counterclaim. They invite those involved to accuse each other of untruths or of lying. The inevitable consequence of the ECB’s decision-making was that three former team-mates, one of whom is a current England international player, were pitted against one another in what later became a public forum for the world at large to see.”Rafiq released a statement after the verdicts were published, saying English cricket still needed to address the problem of racism within the game.”Charges against seven of the eight defendants, including the widespread use of the ‘P’ word, have been upheld by the CDC today,” Rafiq wrote. “This comes in addition to the other reports, panels and inquiries that found I and others suffered racial harassment and bullying while at Yorkshire.”The issue has never been about individuals but the game as a whole. Cricket needs to understand the extent of its problems and address them. Hopefully, the structures of the game can now be rebuilt and institutionalised racism ended for good. It’s time to reflect, learn and implement change.”The ECB chair, Richard Thompson, said the investigation was the “most complex” the ECB had ever conducted, and that the need now was for a period of “reconciliation” in which the game can begin to heal its wounds.”Given the nature of these cases, they have taken a clear toll on everyone involved. There now needs to be a time of reconciliation where, as a game, we can collectively learn and heal the wounds and ensure that nothing like this can ever happen again.”This has been the most complex and thorough regulatory investigation and disciplinary process that the ECB has ever conducted.”The decisions published today are the findings of an independent CDC Panel, reaching its own decisions based on the evidence before it, and it is now for the Panel to determine what sanctions are appropriate where charges have been admitted or upheld. Having only received the decisions today, we will need time to consider them carefully.”

Real Madrid player ratings vs Barcelona: Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick heroics go to waste as Jude Bellingham is bypassed in costly Clasico defeat

Carlo Ancelotti's side were thoroughly outclassed at Montjuic as defeat left their La Liga defence in tatters

Real Madrid endured a defensive nightmare while Jude Bellingham went missing in the most chaotic of Clasicos as Los Blancos were defeated 4-3 in a game that effectively handed arch-rivals Barcelona the Liga title.

Despite the apparent closeness of the scoreline, Carlo Ancelotti's side were never truly in it – despite a Kylian Mbappe hat-trick – as they were out-passed, outplayed, and outclassed by a rampant Barca side that did everything to show why they deserve to win the league.

Everything looked good for Madrid early on, as inside the first five minutes Kylian Mbappe burst behind Barca's high line and rounded Wojciech Szczesny before having his legs clipped, which allowed the France captain to convert the ensuing penalty with ease. He made it two soon after, too, with another direct run and clinical finish.

But Madrid never looked truly in control, and Barca woke up. Their first goal came via some poor defending as Eric Garcia ghosted in front of a stranded Raul Asencio to nod home. Lamine Yamal provided the second, finishing a wonderfully constructed move with a calm stroke into the bottom corner. Raphinha then had his say, scoring twice in 10 minutes to give Barca daylight heading into having turned a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 lead.

But Madrid stuck around as a more resolute defensive showing in the second half afforded them space going the other way. Vinicius Jr and Mbappe combined for their third, the latter handed an easy tap-in after some shoddy Barca defending. The home side then thought they had a penalty that might have put the game to bed, but Aurelien Tchouameni was adjudged to have not handled the ball after a lengthy VAR review.

Madrid had a duo of final chances, but couldn't convert, with debutant Victor Munoz smashing wide when offered a clear opportunity to level the game. Los Blancos wouldn't have deserved a draw, though. They were too loose, too open, and thoroughly outplayed. As such, the title race is all-but over.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Thibaut Courtois (4/10):

Conceded four goals that he couldn't do anything about.

    Lucas Vazquez (3/10):

What a nightmare! Admittedly abandoned in a one-v-one with Raphinha that he was always going to lose, but made three errors leading to goals in the first half alone.

    Raul Asencio (4/10):

All over the place at the back. Should have tracked his man on Barca's first, and spent the rest of the afternoon making silly tackles.

    Aurelien Tchouameni (5/10):

Pulled left and right by Ferran. Maybe a bit lucky to not give a penalty away after a dubious hand ball.

    Fran Garcia (5/10):

Could have closed down Yamal a few more times, but didn't have the worst game against the magical winger.

    Midfield

    Federico Valverde (6/10):

Picked up a worrying knock shortly before half-time, but was able to play on. Moved to right-back soon after. Does everything the manager asks every time.

    Dani Ceballos (4/10):

Put in the team for midfield control, yet barely touched the ball.

    Jude Bellingham (4/10):

Hardly on the ball in the first half, and spent most of the game electing not to defend. His form has dropped off massively.

    Attack

    Arda Guler (5/10):

Spent 45 minutes watching and was then replaced. Should have helped out the flailing Vazquez.

    Kylian Mbappe (8/10):

Took his penalty well and added two more. Scored three when he should have had six, though.

    Vinicius Junior (5/10):

Made all of the right runs, but was uncharacteristically loose on the ball. Puzzling to be so poor yet grab two assists.

    Brahim Diaz (5/10):

Offered some creativity in the middle of the park.

    Endrick (N/A):

Southee lauds 'world class' Williamson, Mitchell after thrilling win

“Seeing how calm he is in the middle keeps us all calm as well,” Southee said of Williamson

Andrew Fidel Fernando13-Mar-2023New Zealand’s lower-order hitting in the first innings, and their rallying with the ball late on day four were crucial moments in the first Test against Sri Lanka. This was what their captain Tim Southee felt, after his team had pulled off a last-ball victory at Hagley Oval – the hosts scrambling to a target of 285 with two wickets to spare.Oh, plus Daryl Mitchell’s innings – both in the first dig, where he held New Zealand together with his 102, and in the second, when he hit 81, forging a 142-run fourth-wicket partnership with Kane Williamson. In the first innings, Southee hit 25, Matt Henry crashed 72, and Neil Wagner made 27, when New Zealand had seemed like they’d end up with a serious first-innings deficit.”Daryl’s first innings was a was a massive turning point and it sort of got us back in,” Southee said after the match. “And any time the lower order is able to contribute is massive, and it sort of got us into the lead.Related

“We were able to eke out runs there, and then on day four, when we were able to bowl them out quickly and now give them a position when they were able to declare and dictate how many runs they wanted – there’s a couple of moments there where you look back on as probably turning points in the game.”On Williamson, who shepherded the chase, hit a spectacular final boundary through point, and got New Zealand to their target, Southee had this to say: “He’s just a world-class player, and world-class players are able to perform in different conditions and different situations. Even when he was young, he was the guy you leaned on.”We saw his class even with that last boundary, when he beat two fielders to the big side of the ground. Just the calmness with which he does it is good for the group. Seeing how calm he is in the middle keeps us all calm as well.”Southee believed being relaxed even in tense situations was something New Zealand prided themselves on.”It’s just about trying to keep calm. When you’ve got one of our best players out there, that helps as well. We’ve seen it in the last two Tests, and in Pakistan as well. It’s a changing group, but the belief in the guys that that have come in… we’ve had a couple of bad days but being able to bounce back and know that someone’s going to put their hand up – that’s a sign of a good side.”

Ponting: 'It was a tough decision to leave Prithvi out'

“The six games he played, it was just over 40-odd runs, averaging about 7 or 8. That’s not what we require right now”

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Apr-2023

Prithvi Shaw was dropped for Delhi Capitals’ last game after a string of low scores•BCCI

Ricky Ponting has no doubt Prithvi Shaw remains a match-winner, but feels that the Delhi Capitals opener had gone through a long enough run of low scores to merit being left out of Delhi Capitals’ XI. Shaw played the first six games of the season for Capitals, scoring 12, 7, 0, 15, 0 and 13, before being dropped for their most recent game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 24.Ponting, the Capitals coach, noted that Shaw’s run of low scores for Capitals stretched all the way to the second half of the 2022 season. The opener has now failed to pass fifty in his last 12 IPL innings. Shaw was one of four players – Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje were the others – retained by the franchise ahead of the 2022 mega auction.”It just came to the point, where yes, it was six games this season, but I think it was six or seven games at the back end of last season as well,” Ponting said on the eve of Capitals’ return fixture against Sunrisers. “I think it’s 13 [12] games since Prithvi has made a fifty opening the batting for the Delhi Capitals, which, if you look throughout the tournament, there are a lot of other players at the top of the order with other teams that are playing a whole lot better than Prithvi.”Related

Capital collapse: Delhi's problems start with Warner and Shaw

Misfiring batters under spotlight as Capitals, Sunrisers seek a lift

In their last match against Sunrisers, Capitals left Shaw out and promoted Phil Salt to open alongside David Warner. The move didn’t come off immediately: Salt was out for a first-ball duck.”We needed to find a bit of a spark at the top of the order, and Phil Salt moved there in the last game – that didn’t quite work as well,” Ponting said. “So yeah, Prithvi, absolutely, at his absolute best we know he is a match-winner. That’s one of the reasons that he is a retained player here at the Delhi Capitals, because we know that if he bats a certain amount of balls, we win about 95% of the games, but so far this season he hasn’t been able to produce.”I think the six games that he played, it was just over 40-odd runs, averaging about 7 or 8, so that’s not what we require right now. So it was a tough decision to leave him out, but hopefully, the team that we put on the park tomorrow can win another game for us.”Ponting was surprised by Shaw’s poor returns in IPL 2023 – he had felt at the start of the season that Shaw was shaping up well, both from a fitness and work-ethic perspective, to score heavily.”It’s not difficult to have the conversation, because that’s what my job is,” Ponting said when asked about communicating the decision to drop Shaw. “When guys are not performing, or even when they are performing, it’s my job to have good, honest, open, adult conversations with all the players, and nothing’s different with Prithvi. I talk the same way to him as I talk to any guys that are scoring runs.”But as it sort of worked out, when he arrived this year, he had been at the NCA [National Cricket Academy] for quite a few weeks, he had been working really hard on his fitness. He turned up in good physical shape, and his work ethic and training and everything he did in the nets suggested to me that this might be just that big year for him.”I actually came out publicly and said it, on record, saying that I thought he would be one of our standout players for the tournament. That hasn’t worked out just yet, but saying that, there’s a long way to go. If things don’t work out with our current top order, there’s no reason why he couldn’t be back in the team, and if he gets back in the team, then hopefully he can finish the tournament really strongly.”We know what sort of talent he is, everyone’s seen him play. It’s up to us, as a team, to find a way to get the best out of him.”

Uncapped Rishad Hossain and Jaker Ali in Bangladesh squad for Ireland T20I series

The uncapped pair of Rishad Hossain and Jaker Ali have earned national call-ups for the first time, for Bangladesh’s T20I series against Ireland – the three-match series starts on March 27. Shoriful Islam has come back, making it three changes from the side that beat England 3-0 earlier this month. Afif Hossain, Tanvir Islam and Rejaur Rahman Raja have been left out.Getty Images

The inclusion of legspinner Rishad is the most interesting call. He has been around the senior setup for the last few years but has hardly had any opportunities – even in the domestic circuit, like many legspinners in the country. The last time he played regularly in a domestic tournament was nearly two years ago in the Dhaka Premier League T20s. This season, Rishad has only bowled 5.1 overs in the first-class competition. It’s likely that Chandika Hathurusingha, the head coach, wanted to have a look at him in competitive cricket. During his first stint as Bangladesh coach, too, Hathurusingha had drafted in legspinner Jubair Hossain after seeing him bowl in the Bangladesh nets in 2014.

He was also part of Comilla Victorians’ BPL triumph this season.Shoriful came back in place of Rejaur, who hasn’t played an international match despite being in several Bangladesh squads since late 2021.Afif’s exclusion counts as a major setback for the young left-hand batter. His unbroken string of 61 T20I appearances ended when he was dropped for the third T20I against England, and till recently a shoo-in for both white-ball formats, Afif now finds himself on the sidelines. The three T20Is will be played in Chattogram on March 27, 29 and 31.Bangladesh T20I squad for Ireland series: Shakib Al Hasan (capt), Litton Das (wk), Rony Talukdar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Rishad Hossain, Jaker Ali

Atletico have entered the race to sign Sporting CP striker Gyokeres, according to . The Spanish giants have made the Sweden international a top priority as they look to overhaul their attacking options this summer. Diego Simeone wants Gyokeres to lead the line next season, but only Antoine Griezmann, who recently renewed his contract until 2027, is sure to stay. Atletico is hoping that more money from qualifying for the Champions League and new sponsorships will help pay for the transfer, which might cost more than €65 million (£55m/$74m).

Gyokeres, who attended the Champions League final at the Allianz Arena with his agent and sporting president, Frederico Varandas, is not hastily selecting his next destination, according to the report. The 26-year-old striker prefers a project that offers regular Champions League football and the chance to compete for domestic titles over financial gain.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gyokeres has emerged as one of Europe's most prolific forwards in 2024-25, scoring 54 goals and providing 13 assists across all competitions. He came to Sporting from Coventry City in July 2023 for €24 million (£20m/$27m), and if he wants to leave, he is aware of his release clause of €100 million (£84m/$114m). Arsenal and Chelsea have been interested in the striker for a long time, but Atletico are now a genuine competitor.

With his departure almost inevitable, Sporting are already preparing for life without him. Expect Danish forward Conard Harder to step up. He scored 11 goals and provided 7 assists this season. The club also intends to secure a top-tier replacement with the money from Gyokeres' exit.

Anya Shrubsole claims four to set up up mad scramble for last two Finals Day places

Georgia Adams leads Vipers’ recovery from 49 for 5 to defeat Diamonds at Headingley

ECB Reporters Network04-Jun-2023Southern Vipers recovered from 49 for 5 batting first before defeating Northern Diamonds at Headingley, helped by Anya Shrubsole’s four wickets to set up up a mad scramble for the remaining two places at next Saturday’s Finals Day.Heading into Wednesday’s final day of group fixtures, the Vipers, Diamonds, Thunder and Western Storm are all still in contention to join the already qualified Blaze. Thunder host Diamonds and Vipers host Sunrisers.A feature of this fixture was early wickets in both innings. The Vipers, having elected to bat, lost five wickets inside nine overs before recovering to 144 for 6. The Diamonds then slipped to 5 for 3 before being stumbling to 128 for 9.Youth and experience ensured the Vipers leap-frogged the Diamonds into second place in the table on 17 points.Nancy Harman hit a regional best 32 not out off 19 balls from No. 8 in her 10th competition senior appearance in orange. In defence, England seam legend Shrubsole struck three times with the new ball, removing key duo Lauren Winfield-Hill and Hollie Armitage and finishing with a superb 4 for 18.England batter Maia Bouchier looked strong on both sides of the wicket as she hit five boundaries in a 16-ball 24 at the top of the order. However, the Vipers lost regular wickets through the first half of the innings, slipping to 38 for 3.Bouchier was the third to fall when she lobbed Grace Hall up to cover. Hall, a slingy seamer with variations aplenty, has enjoyed an impressive competition so far. The 20-year-old took her tally of wickets to 10 in six games – her first appearances in senior regional cricket. After getting Bouchier, she forced Freya Kemp to play a yorker onto her stumps, leaving the Vipers five down. From there, the Vipers were forced into an innings rebuild. And they did an excellent job on a pitch used for a Vitality Blast game between Yorkshire and Derbyshire earlier in the day.The recovery was led by captain Georgia Adams, who shared 43 with Emily Windsor and an unbroken 52 with Harman. The latter two were both valuable contributors – Windsor with a measured 25 and Harman with four fours before she lofted the last ball of the innings over long-on for six off Abi Glen.Windsor had been bowled advancing at leg-spinner Katie Levick, who had earlier trapped Georgia Elwiss lbw on the way to an impressive 2 for 12 from four overs.Harman was certainly the most destructive Viper on show with the bat, while Adams was busy. The momentum they created was then built upon by Shrubsole, whose second ball in the second over – a beauty of an inswinger – ripped out Winfield-Hill’s off-stump.The other opener, Leah Dobson, then miscued to mid-on at the end of same over before Armitage chipped to cover in the fourth. Then came a counter-attack from England hopeful Bess Heath, who crashed two fours and three sixes in 26 off 12 balls, taking the score to 46 in the seventh over before falling lbw to Mary Taylor’s seam. From there, Sterre Kalis and South African overseas all-rounder Chloe Tryon shared 53 inside eight overs to put their side back in the hunt, the latter making 30 off 20 balls as the score moved to 99 for 4 in the 15th over. But they were part of another damaging collapse of three wickets to fall for six runs. The medium pace of Elwiss accounted for Tryon caught at cover and Katherine Fraser at midwicket in the 15th over before Shrubsole returned to get Kalis caught at mid-off for 32 as the score fell to 105 for 7 in the 16th.Another fightback looked a long shot, and so it proved. Scott was stumped off Adams’ off-spin. Then, with 22 needed off the last over from Taylor, Levick was run out amid an otherwise eventless over.
