Cristiano Ronaldo explains why he didn't attend Diogo Jota's funeral as Portugal star says he wanted to avoid creating a 'circus'

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed the life-changing impact Diogo Jota’s tragic death has had on him following the devastating car crash in the Zamora region of Spain which took the life of the Liverpool star and his brother Andre Silva. Ronaldo has also spoken about the personal reasons behind why he decided against attending the funeral of his Portugal team-mate.

Tragedy in Spain

Jota and his brother died in July this year after their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle and caught fire. Jota, 28, was traveling from Porto to Santander to catch a ferry back to England, as he had been advised not to fly after a recent lung surgery. The football world was left in shock and grief by the tragic news. Just 11 days before the crash, Jota had married his long-term partner, with whom he had three young children. Tributes poured in from teammates, former managers, clubs, and fans worldwide. Liverpool released a statement calling the loss "an unimaginable loss," while the Portuguese Football Federation was "completely devastated".

At the time, Ronaldo said on social media: "Doesn’t make any sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you were married,’ he posted on social media. "To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you."

The five-times Ballon d’Or winner came in for criticism after failing to attend the funeral of his tragic team-mate, and was spotted on holiday in Majorca, but has now explained the reasoning behind his no-show.

Ronaldo told Piers Morgan Uncensored: "There's two things. People criticise me a lot and I don’t care about that because when you feel your conscience is good, you don’t need to worry about what people say. One of the things I don't do after my father died is go to a cemetery. Secondly, you know me and my reputation, wherever I go it's a circus. I don't go (to Jota's funeral) because the attention would be on me and I don't want that."

He added: "People can continue to criticise me but I felt good with my decision. I don’t need to go just so people can see me there. I was thinking of his family and I didn’t need the cameras to see things I do."

'It shows why you have to enjoy the moments'

Ronaldo added: "I was with Gio (his partner Georgina Rodriguez) in the gym. I didn’t believe it when I saw the messages. I cried a lot. It was a very, very difficult moment for everyone; the country, fans, team-mates, families.

"I really liked knowing him and sharing some great moments with him. I spoke to his family and gave them my support. It shows why you have to enjoy the moments and not think too much about the future. I'm not planning much in the long-term because everything can change in a moment. We have to be happy to be here, enjoy life because you don't know what's going to happen in the future. It was a shocking moment and we still feel it now. Diogo was one of us. He was a very good guy and a very good player.

"I really liked knowing him and sharing some great moments with him. I spoke to his family and gave them my support."

AFPTributes continue to pour in

Jota passed four months ago, but is still remembered during every Liverpool home game as fans at Anfield give a minutes’ applause in the 20th minute- in tribute to the Portuguese’s shirt number. Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to Merseyside with Real Madrid and paid a touching tribute to his late former team-mate, laying flowers and an emotional handwritten message at the Liverpool memorial. The heartfelt gesture came as the England international revisited his old home ahead of Los Blancos' Champions League clash with the Reds on Tuesday night.

A’s Fans Chant 'Sell the Team,' Take Home Coliseum Dirt and Seats During Final Games

The Oakland Athletics played what will likely be their next to last game at the Oakland Coliseum on Wednesday night. While the visiting Texas Rangers won the game, 5-1, fans were more there to say goodbye. The results haven't mattered in a while. After Thursday's game there will be no more games to produce results.

This final homestand is Oakland's last chance to see their team in person. It's also their last chance to say goodbye. Most importantly, a last chance to chant "sell the team," a sentiment that will certainly follow the team to Sacramento.

Some fans came looking for souvenirs. At least one rusted set of seats was torn up to be taken home by a fan. Who knows what else was forcibly removed by sad and angry fans.

A more wholesome moment was shown on the broadcast as someone from the grounds crew poured dirt from the field into fans' water bottles, cups and bags.

The entire scene was some weird amalgam of humor and sadness. No matter how mad fans have been, they want something to hold onto. Sometimes that means destruction of property, sometimes it's just a little pile of dirt to spread in the backyard so you know a piece of the team remains no matter where they play ball.

Freddie Freeman Defends Decision to Steal Base on Sprained Ankle

Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman was an unexpected addition to the lineup for Game 1 of the NLDS against the San Diego Padres after spraining his ankle in late September, which created pessimism from the Dodgers that he would be able to play. His prospects for seeing playing time are complicated further since Shohei Ohtani, recovering from UCL surgery, occupies the designated hitter role for the Dodgers full-time.

Nevertheless, Freeman started Game 1 and had a productive 2-for-5 outing. He admitted after the game that he would be a true day-to-day for the foreseeable future, but for someone seemingly hobbled, he did well. Perhaps most surprising, Freeman stole a base on the sprained ankle.

Given the risk of being thrown out or worse, injured further, it might seem ill-advised to even attempt such a move given the ailment, which the Padres are surely aware of, but Freeman had a noble reason for doing so that he explained in a postgame interview with Ken Rosenthal:

"If I can't play the game the right way then I shouldn't be out there," Freeman said, matter of factly. He let out a hearty laugh when asked about the stolen base, as if to say he, himself, was surprised he was able to do it. "I think I got lucky," he said.

It might be trickier to steal a bag the rest of the series for Freeman, who will probably be kept more honest after he showed he's willing to run, hurt ankle or not.

'It goes against my beliefs!' – Arne Slot claims he will NOT focus on Liverpool's defence as Reds boss hopes his side score their way out of slump

Arne Slot has boldly claimed that he will not focus on Liverpool's defence as the Reds boss hopes that his side will outscore every opponent on the way, emerging stronger than before. Following a humiliating 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield, questions have been asked of the Reds' leaking backline, but the Dutch manager insisted that he will not compromise his attacking principles even as the club’s defensive frailties threaten to unravel their season.

  • Slot refuses to panic despite Liverpool’s slide

The Carabao Cup defeat was Liverpool’s sixth defeat in seven matches across all competitions. The last time the Reds suffered five consecutive league defeats was during the 1953/54 season, the year they were relegated from the top flight. Despite making a lightning start to the Premier League, winning their first five games, the Reds now sit seven points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal, and their defensive resilience has simply evaporated into thin air. They haven’t kept a clean sheet in 10 matches and have conceded first in seven straight games. Yet, Slot remains adamant that abandoning his offensive philosophy would be a mistake.

    'My beliefs won’t change': Slot

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s crucial Premier League clash with Aston Villa, Slot was asked whether adopting a more cautious approach might be the temporary fix his struggling side needs. The Dutchman’s answer was defiant.

"It does go against my beliefs but I have won games in the past, like Man City away, that went against my beliefs but it was necessary to play it like that over there in the second half," he said. "I would be more than open to adapting in certain situations, but I don't think the story is that we conceded chance after chance or that we are too open, every single game, maybe apart from Palace and Brentford, all the other games we deserved much more than we got, and we hardly conceded a chance."

The manager doubled down on his mantra and further insisted that he wouldn’t rip up his attacking blueprint just to grind out results.

"I don't see a reason to change our playing style completely but we need to do better in not conceding goals that for sure," he said. "Even with the team this week which played for the first time together, I think they only conceded three big chances but unfortunately they all went in. But that's because they were big chances, not chances, they were big chances."

  • Slot wants to defend better during set-pieces

However, Slot did acknowledge one glaring weakness in his defensive setup, which is Liverpool’s recurring problems from set-pieces. Reflecting on their recent defeats to Brentford and Manchester United, he admitted his players lacked physicality and concentration at key moments.

"It is never helpful if you end a game of football against Man Utd with conceding a set-piece, and you start another one in the Premier League, and you concede a throw-in after five minutes," he said.

"I'm not 100% if I'm correct, but we had to defend 16 set-pieces [against Brentford], and 15 we defended well, but at this moment, 15 isn't enough because we conceded 16. The first one, someone said to me, no player survives the first contact, and that is also a little bit what makes it difficult if you are five minutes in and 1-0 down. That is never helpful for confidence and for the plan you had, but like I said, if I liked a little part of the game, it was the part after we conceded 1-0 because we were creative, we created our chances, but we couldn't score, and in the last 10 minutes, it became more of their game again. Eventually, the way we conceded the 2-0 – that is something that is far from our standards."

Villa’s rise adds pressure to the Reds’ Plight

As Liverpool struggle for consistency, Aston Villa have surged back into contention after a dreadful start. Unai Emery’s side, who were winless in their first five games and briefly in the relegation zone, have now recorded four consecutive victories, including an impressive 1-0 triumph over Manchester City last Sunday. While Liverpool’s high-octane attacking style has been thrilling, injury to Alexander Isak and a misfiring Mohamed Salah have not helped their cause. Slot’s philosophy faces a stern test, but without defensive discipline, it risks turning into chaos.

Forget Sesko: Teenage goal "machine" is destined to be Man Utd's next #9

Whisper it quietly, but Manchester United are showing real signs of improvement under Ruben Amorim’s management this season.

Shout it loudly: the Red Devils went to Anfield on Sunday afternoon and emerged victorious, having put Liverpool to the sword and condemned Arne Slot’s side to four successive defeats.

That’s three wins from four in the Premier League for United, who are certainly starting to find some semblance of coherence and style as they march back into European contention.

There’s a lot to like within a burgeoning frontline, but Benjamin Sesko will be disappointed to have been left on the bench for the weekend win.

Why Sesko was left out of the starting line-up

Sesko had previously played his first two full 90s in the Premier League, and he scored on both occasions. The Slovenian centre-forward moved to Old Trafford this summer for a £72m fee, having shown plenty of promise previously with RB Leipzig.

There’s no question that the 22-year-old has sharp footwork for such a rangy forward. He creates chances with comparative consistency while providing an aerial threat each game.

However, there’s a case to be made that United are more fluid, interchangeable, when opting for Matheus Cunha in the middle, flanked by Mason Mount and Bryan Mbeumo.

But then, there’s also a case to be made that the 6 foot 5 striker has the trappings of a world-class goalscorer, and must be trusted after such a pretty penny was spent on his signature this summer.

He’s a talented forward, and there’s a sense he will keep on improving in concurrence with United’s own resurgence.

But Sesko might want to keep an eye on his six, for there’s a prolific academy star over at Carrington who might just fancy a shot at the number nine berth in the coming years.

Man Utd's future number 9 could replace Sesko

Manchester United’s academy is intertwined with the senior set-up. However, with Kobbie Mainoo out of favour, it would be nice to see a new starboy emerge from the ground and play a pivotal role in Amorim’s system.

Well, JJ Gabriel might just be the forward United are searching for. The 15-year-old is a long way away from establishing himself on the professional stage, but he’s developing at a prodigious rate, with ten goals and an assist from his first nine matches with the U18s.

Fast-tracked due to his innate ball-striking ability and dribbling skills, Gabriel could shape into a striker who would provide the best of both worlds for Amorim, blending Cunha and Mbuemo’s athleticism with the sharpness of Sesko in the box.

Described as by “one of the most exciting talents in the world” by the Manchester Evening News’ Steven Railston, Gabriel would hardly be the first to have made the trip from Carrington to superstardom under the Old Trafford lights, and he will use the fuel from the promotion of the class of 92′ and, more recently, the likes of Marcus Rashford.

Also hailed as a “goalscoring machine” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Gabriel might only be 15 but if he keeps on firing at such a clinical rate, he could make his senior bow sooner rather than later, with Angel Gomes Man United’s youngest-ever Premier League debutant at 16 years and eight months old.

The England U15 international, yet to score across six caps, has what it takes to become a success at Man United, but though this is a player to keep a close eye on, his physical and mental development must be prioritised at this stage, and we won’t see him in action for some time.

But when Old Trafford is treated to this precocious youngster’s emergence, he might just ruffle a few senior feathers.

Freddie Freeman Shared a Special Moment With His Dad After Walk-Off Grand Slam

Off one massive swing of the bat, Freddie Freeman got the Los Angeles Dodgers a massive World Series victory over the New York Yankees to go up 1–0 in the Fall Classic. Freeman hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 10th, one of the biggest moments in recent World Series history, to give the Dodgers a 6–3 win.

Freeman, who has been nursing a hurt ankle all postseason, was the Yankees' preferred option to pitch to with two outs. New York intentionally walked Mookie Betts to get to Freeman instead. Potentially, the strategy was hoping he may have to run to beat out a ground ball. Instead, Freeman pushed out a no-doubter.

After the hit, Freeman was swept in a wave of celebratory chaos, but found his way to his dad.

"I [was] just screaming in his face," Freeman said to Ken Rosenthal during the postgame interview on FOX. "Sorry dad."

Freeman continued, saying, "He's been there since I was a little boy throwing batting practice to me every day. So this isn't my moment, that's my dad's moment."

For the Freeman family, it was an awesome moment coming in a year that has brought challenges. The first baseman has been candid with the public about a neurological disorder that hospitalized his son and kept Freeman away from the team for a short time.

Freeman and the Dodgers hope they can take three more games to hoist a World Series trophy.

Harshal Patel returns to Gujarat after 14 years with Haryana

The move back to his home state will allow the fast bowler to spend more time with his young family in Ahmedabad

Hot on the heels of Jayant Yadav’s departure comes another high-profile move away from Haryana, with India seamer Harshal Patel signing with Gujarat for the 2025-26 domestic season.Having completed all formalities, Harshal will be available for Gujarat’s pre-season preparations, which kick off with a tri-series later this month that also features the other two teams from the state, Baroda and Saurashtra.Related

Jayant Yadav signs with Puducherry for 2025-26 domestic season

Harshal’s return to Gujarat completes a circle. He was born there, and made his List A debut for the side in 2008-09 following an impressive Under-19 season. However, he made the switch to Haryana soon after returning from the Under-19 World Cup in 2010, when he was unable to make further inroads in Gujarat. He eventually made his first-class debut, for Haryana, in 2011-12 and had been a key member of their squads across formats since. In all, Harshal has picked up 246 first-class wickets in 74 matches at an average of 24.02, with 12 five-wicket hauls. He was instrumental in Haryana becoming a force across the white-ball formats over the years, and was part of the side that went on to clinch their maiden Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2023-24.”Right from 2010-11 since my Under-19 days, almost the entirety of my professional career has been with Haryana, I owe a lot to them,” Harshal told ESPNcricinfo. “If that move to Haryana as an 18-year-old hadn’t worked out for me I would have probably moved to the USA and not played cricket in India.”Harshal divides his time between the USA – where he has extended family – and Ahmedabad, where he lives. Harshal’s decision to switch teams comes at a time when he felt he needed to prioritise spending time with his young family between cricket commitments.”It was getting difficult for me to be away from the family for long periods of time,” Harshal said. “So I wanted to come back and see if I could finish my career here. Glad I got an opportunity to do that.”Harshal had been approached by another team, but he wanted to first see if Gujarat would be keen. As it turned out, they were “more than happy” to have him back.”I first asked Anil Patel [secretary, Gujarat Cricket Association] and he was gracious enough to say, ‘this is your home, welcome back.’ Having come back, I’m open to play everything and anything that the team wants me to play.”While my specialisation will remain white-ball, I’m only more than happy to take any opportunities that come my way with red-ball cricket.”Harshal hasn’t played for India since January 2023 but an international comeback isn’t on his mind•BCCI

Harshal hasn’t been a first-class regular for the past two seasons, only playing seven red-ball games over that period. But looking ahead, he’s happy with where his body is at and is keen to get back to the grind if picked.”My body allows me to bowl 20 overs in a day over two months or however long the Ranji Trophy season is; it doesn’t bother me,” he said. “I love the grind. The goal has always been to play the best cricket that I can play for as long as I can irrespective of the format.”At 34, Harshal remains an IPL regular and is coming off an excellent season with Sunrisers Hyderabad – 16 wickets in 13 games at an economy rate of 9.80. He played the most recent of his 25 T20Is in January 2023, and isn’t in the mix currently. The prospects of an India comeback, though, aren’t on his mind.”My India selections and IPL and all of these things have come as a byproduct of that mindset of giving it my best wherever I play,” he said. “My motivation has nothing to do with whether I’ll play for India or not or whether I’ll play IPL or not.”My motivation has everything to do with whether I still have the hunger to go to the ground and bowl 10-15 overs in a day, and if I can do it over a period of two-three months. And the answer is yes.”At Gujarat, Harshal hopes to lend his experience to a set-up that is largely in a transition phase under head coach Ramesh Powar.”I’m pretty excited to see what I can add here to the team’s betterment,” he said. “That’s what I spoke about with Ramesh and Axar [Patel] recently. If I can contribute in some way to the development of players, mentor them and help them in their journey, there’ll be no bigger satisfaction.”As far as my own journey is concerned, I’ve always asked myself how can I be the best player I can be. That has kept me going for all these years, and it still keeps me going. My training consistency is probably better than it has ever been.”I’ve been really lucky and I’ve been really fortunate that I don’t have that financial anxiety anymore [thanks to the IPL]. So now that factor is taken away, the only thing that still pushes me is I want to play this game because I love playing this game.”
