Knight calls for 'knockout mindset' from England players after second straight loss

She is, however, confident that the experience in the squad can help them bounce back

Heather Knight feels England lost their match against West Indies by slipping to 156 for 8 in their chase of 226, and not in its dramatic final stages, when they lost their last two wickets in the space of four balls after a 61-run ninth-wicket partnership between Sophie Ecclestone and Kate Cross. It was the defending champions’ second defeat in two matches at the Women’s World Cup, and Knight hopes England can bring a “knockout mindset” to their remaining games.”It was a brilliant partnership,” the England captain said, about the Ecclestone-Cross stand. “We were obviously in a very tricky position, but we back our tail.”Sophie and Kate have worked so hard on their batting and it’s quite nice to see them get the rewards for the work they’ve done. Yeah, they did seem really calm [while chasing]. They kept it very simple and they just tried to tick off the total. We had enough time in terms of balls left. So I think the way they played was outstanding, showed real fight. Obviously, we don’t want to be in that position. But that’s cricket – it swings quite quickly, breaking that partnership and losing that last [wicket].”[It’s] just a bit frustrating, but it wasn’t that last 10-15 minutes that lost us the game. Ultimately, we’ve been in a few positions where we found ourselves with our backs against the wall, where we’ve had to go and fight and then we’ve done that. But we don’t want to be in that position in the first place.”England might be worried at the fact that they have now lost five ODIs on the bounce. But Knight believes the team has enough experience to get back to winning ways.”I think we need to have a knockout mindset now. Next game against South Africa is crucial to our World Cup hopes,” Knight said. “So we have to bring that mindset of needing to win every game and that simplifies things, doesn’t it? And hopefully, that’ll sharpen people’s minds to what we need to do because, at the moment, we’re fighting for our lives in this tournament.Sophie Ecclestone was unbeaten on 33 when England were bowled out agonisingly close to their target•Getty Images

“But yeah, there’s a lot of experience in this group. We have lost games before, and we know that we can’t dwell on defeat too much. Particularly, close defeats. They can sometimes be a little bit tricky to park, but we have got to make sure we park them, take what we need to, and go into the next game and give it everything.”Two aspects Knight wants England to work on are death bowling and their fielding. On Wednesday, England dropped as many as seven chances after being asked to bowl first and ended up conceding 63 runs off their last seven overs. In their tournament opener against Australia, England leaked 79 runs in their final seven overs and eventually lost the game by 12 runs while chasing 311.”They [West Indies] didn’t score too quickly in the middle, but we struggled to take wickets, and obviously, a few dropped catches and things like that didn’t help our cause, and when there are two set batters, it can be quite tricky,” Knight said.”They squirted a few away and brought that momentum a little bit and then they finished pretty strongly but it’s something we definitely can do better. I think against Australia, the last loss, the 10 overs where they had set batters in, it was quite tough to defend. So yeah, [death bowling is] certainly something we’ll look at and look to keep improving our back-end stuff, because, in the Ashes, we didn’t really have that, that real death [bowling] issues that we probably had in those last few games. So it’s making sure, as bowlers, we’ve got clarity on what our plans are and where we want the batters to hit us.”With England set to play two nearly back-to-back games, against South Africa and India, on March 14 and 16, Knight does want to linger on the defeats too much.”We can do a lot better at the game and make sure we’re focused on the next one and not make too much of ourselves,” she said. “But in no way we’re out of this World Cup yet, so we have to focus on the next game. Get what we can from this game, park it and move on, ready for the next game against South Africa.”

£30m goalkeeper could join Tottenham as Ange considers Vicario replacement

Tottenham Hotspur are considering a dip into the January transfer market to sign an emergency goalkeeper, following an injury to number one shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario.

Guglielmo Vicario fractures ankle in 4-0 Tottenham win over Man City

The Italian has been praised by teammates and critics alike since joining Spurs from Empoli in the summer of 2023, with Vicario called an unsung hero at Tottenham, despite some criticism surrounding his ability to deal with corners.

The 28-year-old was also outstanding in Tottenham’s impressive 4-0 win over Man City at the Etihad Stadium last weekend, playing 60 minutes with a fractured ankle in what was a heroic feat of endurance.

“Sometimes football gives you its highs, and sometimes it challenges you in ways you don’t expect,” wrote Vicario on Instagram (via Sky Sports).

“I played 60 minutes at the Etihad with a broken bone in my ankle, giving absolutely everything I had for the team. Unfortunately, there was no way around this one. I needed surgery. I’m disappointed I won’t be able to help the team for a while.

“A massive thank you to the doctors and the staff. The operation went well, and from tomorrow I’ll be working hard to come back stronger, fitter, and ready to give my all for you again.

“Thank you to the Spurs fans for all the love. See you soon on the pitch.”

Tottenham have confirmed that Vicario has undergone surgery on his right ankle, meaning he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The Italy international hasn’t missed a single Premier League game since making the move to North London last year, but Ange Postecoglou is now forced to rely on Fraser Forster to deputy for Vicario.

It is an undoubted blow for the north Londoners, given just how much they’ve relied on Vicario in-between the sticks since his arrival.

“One of my mates from Celtic actually played with him at Empoli, and he’s raved about him for ages, so as soon as he was coming here he said he’s a very, very good goalkeeper,” said Forster on Vicario right after he joined.

“Top guy. He’s been brilliant in the games, he’s been brilliant around the place, trains well and works hard, so it’s a good start for him.”

Tottenham consider goalkeeper signing as James Trafford emerges as option

According to talkSPORT, Spurs are considering the signing of an emergency new goalkeeper in January, who can fill in for Vicario while the ex-Serie A star recovers from his surgery.

As per their information, an option for the Lilywhites is Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. The former Man City gem is itching to make a return to the Premier League, after being relegated with Burnley last season, and Trafford is apparently a contender to join Spurs and step into Vicario’s shoes.

The 22-year-old is in his infancy when it comes to the shelf life of a keeper, so this could be a long-term signing, as well as an immediate replacement for Vicario.

However, he won’t come cheap, as reports earlier this year suggested Trafford commands a price tag of around £30 million.

Fofana has taken to social media to share screenshots of racist messages he received after Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

Chelsea have been quick to react to the abuse and have pledged to work with social media companies in a bid to discover the identities of those involved.

"Chelsea Football Club is appalled and disgusted by the recent rise in online racial abuse towards our players," the club said in a statement. "The abuse Wes Fofana has been subjected to following yesterday’s fixture is abhorrent and will not be tolerated. Wes and all our players have our full support. We will work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators and take the strongest possible action."

  • WHAT FOFANA SAID

On top of the statement from his club, Fofana spoke out on Instagram, saying: "2025, stupidity and cruelty no longer hide. It's not just football, it's not just a 'game' when some believe that their skin color makes them superior to others. It's time for things to change, for platforms to take action, and for everyone to take responsibility."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fofana played 86 minutes of the defeat at the Emirates Stadium and was in the spotlight for a challenge on Declan Rice. The defender escaped a red card for the tackle which angered some Arsenal fans and saw former referee Dermot Gallagher tell Sky Sports that Fofana was fortunate to stay on: “I think this was really really lucky throughout the game, it wasn’t just this, he committed a number of offences. Ironically he got yellow carded later in the game for delaying the restart but I don’t think that’s a red card if it’s a yellow card he can’t argue and if he gets a yellow card, it may stop him from committing a number of the challenges he committed after.”

The next Mainoo & Garnacho: Amorim must unleash Man Utd’s "exciting" teen

It’s no secret that Manchester United have been home to one of the very best academies in English football over the years, producing endless talents that have had a huge impact on the beautiful game – namely the ‘Class of 92’.

David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes were the six graduates who progressed into being key first-team players in Manchester.

The six players made over 3000 appearances for the club during their respective periods at the Theatre of Dreams, contributing to their success, which has seen them claim 20 English top division titles – making them the most successful club in the country.

Fast-forward to 2024, new boss Ruben Amorim is on the lookout for a new crop of stars to make the jump into his squad, potentially making his tenure in the Premier League a roaring triumph.

Manchester United’s U18 squad in 2024/25

Whilst the club’s first-team have failed to deliver during the opening months, leading to the sacking of Erik ten Hag, the academy side have thrived and impressed beyond any imagination in recent weeks.

During the U18 Premier League season to date, the Red Devils have played nine matches, winning all nine and sitting at the top of the table – sitting five points clear of rivals Manchester City, boasting the only unbeaten record in the division.

Their record is all the more impressive when delving into their stats, scoring 43 times in their outings – an average of 4.7 goals per game, whilst conceding just four goals in the process.

Winger James Scanlon has caught the eye, scoring nine times and registering four assists in his eight appearances, currently sitting as their top-scorer and playing a huge part in their attacking success in recent months.

16-year-old Chido Obi-Martin arrived in the summer from Arsenal, joining with high expectations after his record from 2023/24 which saw him score 32 times in 18 matches during the U18 Premier League campaign.

The Dane has already made a solid start to life in the North, registering four goals in his opening four matches, including a hat-trick on his debut against Nottingham Forest in the 6-0 victory.

However, there’s another youth prospect who could have a significant role to play under new boss Amorim, following in the footsteps of multiple current members of the 39-year-old’s squad.

The teen who could star under Amorim for Man Utd

Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are two players currently plying their trade for United, making the step up from youth level to the professional game with ease.

The English man has already made his mark at international level, featuring under Gareth Southgate at Euro 2024, with Garnacho also featuring for Argentina, but also having a talismanic role in the opening weeks of 2024/25.

The 20-year-old has already registered seven goals and four assists in his opening 19 matches of the season, the most of any player in the Red Devils side.

Amorim could add another talented academy star into the mix in the coming years in the form of centre-back Godwill Kukonki, who has starred in the U18 setup despite being just 16.

He’s made eight appearances, playing a huge part in their defensive success in recent months, earning him an immediate call-up to Amorim’s squad.

He may have a lot of developing before he’s able to make an impact at Old Trafford, but his 6 foot 5 frame could see him develop into a key figure over the years to come in the new-look back three.

The injury crisis at the back could allow the youngster to make strides into cementing a place under Amorim, with the former Sporting CP boss evidently showing a lot of trust in the stars despite his tender age.

Their academy has been a source of solace over the years, with Kukonki having all of the tools to become a part of United’s revival under the former Portuguese international during his tenure in the North West.

Liverpool star who left under Rodgers is now on par with Mbappe & Haaland

Liverpool’s victory over Real Madrid in midweek was their first over the Spanish side in eight games, stretching back to the stunning 4-0 thrashing of Los Blancos in 2009.

Despite their strong start to the campaign, many had claimed the Anfield side had yet to defeat a genuine world-class team. The 2-0 victory in midweek will surely put that argument to rest.

Ending this winless run against the 15-time European champions will also give them a psychological boost, especially if the two sides meet in the latter stages of the Champions League this season.

The barren spell started way back in 2014 when Brendan Rodgers was in charge. Having finished second in the 2013/14 Premier League table, the Reds qualified for the group stages, drawn in the same group against Madrid.

A 3-0 loss at Anfield was followed by a 1-0 defeat at the Bernabeu as Rodgers’ side struggled in the competition.

Despite coming so close to the league title just months before, Rodgers failed to truly improve his squad during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool’s business in the 2014 summer transfer window

Rodgers had money to spend ahead of the 2014/15 campaign and with the prospect of playing against Europe’s elite, the supporters looked forward to an exciting summer.

Southampton were targeted, as Adam Lallana, Ricki Lambert and Dejan Lovren made the move to Merseyside. Lazar Markovic was one of the more exciting signings, as the Reds splashed out £20m on exciting Benfica winger Lazar Markovic, while Mario Balotelli returned to the Premier League.

Mario-balotelli-liverpool

A couple of interesting signings for sure, but they weren’t quite of the required quality to fire the club to glory during the 2014/15 season.

While money was available due to Champions League qualification, Rodgers secured a financial windfall for one of his key players – Luis Suárez.

Liverpool's sale of Luiz Suarez

The 2013/14 season was a remarkable one for the Uruguayan as he scored a staggering 31 goals in the Premier League while registering 13 assists. This was made even more special considering the striker missed the first five matches of the season due to suspension which had carried over from the previous campaign.

These performances under Rodgers were bound to attract attention from elsewhere and when the summer transfer window opened, it was clear Suarez would be leaving Anfield.

Indeed, when Barcelona came in with an offer of £75m, Suarez left for La Liga, linking up with fellow South Americans Neymar and Lionel Messi.

He is still remembered fondly among the Anfield faithful and if he remained at the club, just how many goals would he have scored?

Luis Suárez’s Liverpool statistics

The centre-forward signed for the club in January 2011 with Kenny Dalglish spending around £22.7m to lure him from Ajax.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

He signed alongside Andy Carroll and he went slightly under the radar due to the Reds spending £35m on the Englishman. This new strike partnership looked like it could fire Liverpool to glory in the future, especially given both players were under the age of 24 at the time.

Only one left their mark at Anfield, however, as Saurez became one of the best strikers in the world.

He netted 17 times during the 2011/12 campaign as the Reds won the League Cup while reaching the FA Cup final, before adding another 30 goals the following season – although this was marred towards the end when he was given a suspension due to biting Branislav Ivanovic in a tie against Chelsea.

Despite this, 2013/14 was incredible for the player. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher lavished praise on the Uruguayan for his exploits at the club, saying:

Despite leaving Liverpool more than a decade ago, the 37-year-old is still going strong.

What Luis Saurez has done since leaving Liverpool

The former Ajax gem spent six seasons at Barcelona, finally getting his hands on the Champions League trophy while scoring 195 goals for the La Liga side.

A spell at Atlético Madrid saw Suarez secure yet another league title, before he had spells at Club Nacional in his homeland and Gremio in Brazil.

It was his move to MLS side Inter Miami in December 2023 which has seen him enjoy an Indian summer to his impressive career. Linking up with former Barcelona teammate Messi in Florida, the duo aimed to fire the club to glory.

Across 30 MLS and MLS Cup Playoff games during the 2024 season, Suarez scored 21 goals along with grabbing nine assists as Miami ended the regular campaign with a points total of 74, the highest in the history of the league.

They were surprisingly defeated by Atlanta United in the first round of the playoffs, but for his performances, the striker was rewarded with a new one-year contract extension.

“I’m very happy, very excited to continue for another year and to be able to enjoy being here with this fanbase, which for us is like family,” Suarez said.

His exploits for Miami have even seen the player nominated as one of the best attackers at the Best FIFA Football Awards 2024, ranking him alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland to name just a couple of stars.

He might not win the title, but just being named alongside some of these players is a testament to Suarez’s amazing longevity and the fact he is still scoring regularly for his club side.

Forever a Liverpool icon, the Uruguayan will be aiming to finish his career on a high next term by leading Miami to MLS glory, that’s for sure.

Brazilian press claim Fulham are about to make January bid for "top" talent

Fulham are about to make a bid for a Brazilian playmaker who could potentially replace Andreas Pereira at Craven Cottage, according to reports.

Fulham latest news

Marco Silva’s side have enjoyed an impressive season so far, but face a tough test this weekend when they travel to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool. For the fixture, the Cottagers will again have to make do without Reiss Nelson, who has been one of their star players this term.

The Arsenal loanee missed Fulham’s draw with his parent club last week with a hamstring injury he suffered in the 3-1 win over Brighton at the start of the month, and it’s since been confirmed that he will now be out for a further three months.

Fulham to bid for Bidon

With injuries racking up, Fulham could turn to the transfer market in January to add players to their squad. According to the press in Brazil, one of those players could be Corinthians midfielder Breno Bidon, who Trivela claims the Cottagers could soon make a bid for.

Bidon, 19, has been one of Corinthians’ key players this season, and it’s understood that Fulham, alongside Arsenal, have been monitoring his progress closely.

Trivela claims that the clubs have signaled to the Brazilian club their intentions to make bids for the player in the near future, though Fulham’s approach could depend on the departure of current star Pereira. The former Manchester United midfielder is a target for Ligue 1 side Marseille and a number of teams in England, including Aston Villa, Newcastle and Tottenham.

Fulham want to keep Pereira, who previously spoke of his unhappiness of being able to leave in the summer, until the end of the season, but if he does jump ship in January, the likelihood of a bid for Bidon would improve.

Andreas Pereira for Fulham.

Bidon, who recently renewed his contract at Corinthians, has recently been described by renowned Brazilian scout SelecaoTalk as “one of Brazil’s biggest midfield talents”.

“Took to pro football seamlessly this year,” they wrote on X. “Europe’s elite will be all over him soon.”

In a follow-up post, they said: “There are many many top talents in Brazil. More than any other league on the planet. Breno is one of the standout ones right now playing at a very good level.”

Man Utd and INEOS now agree £4m deal to sign new gem for Amorim after talks

Manchester United have now agreed to a deal in which they will sign a young gem for Ruben Amorim, according to a new report. INEOS are looking to put recent concerns behind them as they get their transfer business for 2025 well underway.

ByBrett Worthington Dec 11, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

Although many people view the January transfer window as a challenging time to complete transfers, it offers United a good chance to add a few players to help the new manager get his feet under him.

One player the Red Devils could be chasing in the New Year is striker Victor Osimhen. The forward is enjoying an impressive loan at Galatasaray, but Napoli are still keen to move him on permanently in January, and United, Juventus and PSG are fighting to secure his transfer. This would be an impressive addition for United, but the concern would be the finances, as Napoli are looking for around £62 million to part ways.

2025 could also see United move for a new goalkeeper, as it’s been reported that they are planning a move for Mike Maignan. Andre Onana’s future at Old Trafford is said to be uncertain, with a possible exit on the cards in the summer, and that has meant United are looking at potential replacements. United are preparing a strategy to convince the player and AC Milan to a transfer, and it would cost them around £67 million to secure his services.

Man Utd now agree deal to sign Diego Leon

According to journalist Pedro Torres, relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United have now agreed to a deal to sign Diego Leon in 2025. The 17-year-old plays for Paraguayan outfit Cerro Porteno and has done so since the summer, when he was promoted to the first team.

Leon is still very early in his career and hasn’t got much experience at first-team level, but United and INEOS have clearly seen enough to want to bring him to Old Trafford. It was reported on Wednesday that the Red Devils were in talks to sign Leon in a deal worth £3 million. Those talks were considered “active,” as they were also being held with the player’s representatives. It is now being reported that a deal has been agreed for United to sign Leon, as the “groundwork” of a transfer has been done.

Fellow journalist Roberto Rojas, relayed by Sport Witness, also backs this claim up and says that Leon will officially join Man United in June 2025, when he turns 18, for a fee of $6 million, which is roughly £4 million. United will likely take their time with Leon, as he is still only 17, but he will hopefully be a long-term solution to a position that has been a worry for a while now, and he will also become the first Paraguayan to play for the Premier League team.
