Joe Root expresses sympathy for Azeem Rafiq as England prepare for Headingley Test

Joe Root says he is “desperate” to make the game more inclusive in light of Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of racism at Yorkshire.Rafiq accused Yorkshire of institutional racism resulting in an enquiry into the issue at the club. Last week, Yorkshire issued a “profound apology” to Rafiq after acknowledging that several of his allegations were upheld and admitting he was the “victim of inappropriate behaviour”. They also accepted the report found they had failed to implement their own policies and procedures.Root, the England captain, was a former team-mate of Rafiq at Yorkshire and believes the issue is “something we have to prioritise as a sport” to ensure “this isn’t something that happens again further down the line”. And he accepts cricket has a lot of work to do to combat the issue of racism.Related

“As a former team-mate and friend, it’s hard to see Azeem hurting as he is,” Root said. “More than anything, it just shows that there is a lot of work we have to do in the game.”It’s a societal issue in my opinion. We have seen it in other sports; we have seen it in other areas. As a sport, we have got to keep trying to find ways of making sure this isn’t a conversation that keeps happening. We have got to find ways of creating more opportunities, making our game more diverse and educating better.”I don’t think that just comes from players and administrators: it’s from everyone in the game. There has got to be a want and a will to do that. It is something we have to prioritise as a sport and make sure this isn’t something that happens again further down the line.”Root also confirmed his England team would wear anti-discrimination t-shirts and observe a “moment of unity” ahead of the third LV= Insurance Test against India as has been their custom in recent times. The game, which starts on Wednesday, is to be played at Headingley, the headquarters of Yorkshire.”I think it is really important we have the moment of unity,” Root said. “We have to keep showing the sport is for everyone and that we are desperate to make everyone feel welcome to it. It’s such a brilliant sport and should be open to everyone.”We have to do more, I get that. But, as a team, it is a big focus for us to make the game for everyone and to make it as welcoming as we can. I know we keep talking about it but I am desperate to do something about it. Hopefully in time you can see that come into action.”ESPNcricinfo understands that, at present, Yorkshire have not shared the report with either the PCA or the ECB despite requests to do so. Instead the club are taking legal advice on whether the report, which is understood to contain negative observations on several individuals, can be shared at all outside the organisation without risking libel action from those implicated. As a result, the value of the report – a report which cannot be seen or discussed or, as a result, effectively acted upon – might well be questioned.Meanwhile, however, figures from each of the major two parties in British politics are understood to have been in touch with Rafiq to express concern and offer support. With the ECB also keen to investigate the issue, it seems increasingly likely another report – possibly a report with judicial or parliamentary powers – could be commissioned. Whichever way you look at it, the issue appears unlikely to be resolved in the short term.Craig Overton and Saqib Mahmood at England training•PA Images via Getty Images

England’s issues are less weighty. With Sam Curran, despite a king pair at Lord’s, set to keep his place and Dawid Malan in line to return at No. 3, it appears England are facing a straight choice between Craig Overton and Saqib Mahmood for the final place in the side for the Test – following the news Mark Wood would not be fit for selection. Moeen Ali is also set to retain his place, with Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns forming a new opening pair. While Saqib’s first-class record is relatively modest – he has played only 22 first-class games and taken just one five-wicket haul – he enjoyed an excellent limited-overs series against Pakistan a few weeks ago and has clearly made a positive impression on Root.”I feel like Saqib couldn’t be in a better place to potentially play Test cricket,” Root said. “You look at how he has progressed over the past couple of years across all the formats and the opportunities he has taken this year and he’s been a standout bowler.”Root also admitted he had appreciated the opportunity to “to get away from cricket a little bit” after England’s defeat in the second Test and a session towards the end of India’s second-innings in which his side appeared to lose control in the field.”You can beat yourself up for hours and hours about things you could have done differently,” Root said. “But ultimately it doesn’t guarantee you anything. I’m sure there will be other ex-captains out there who will look back on different passages of play that they could have managed differently. It’s part and parcel of the job sometimes, you have to take it on the chin.”It’s really important to learn but not to drag it into this Test match. We’ll have new challenges, a new surface and a completely new Test to deal with. I’m a more experienced player having gone through that. As long as we don’t make silly mistakes, we’ll grow and become a better team.”I’m playing for England. I’m playing Test cricket. I’m living my boyhood dream. When I was 10 years old I couldn’t think of anything else I wanted to do. Living that boyhood dream is one way you can keep motivating yourself to front up to the next challenge and the next day.”

Vasoo Paranjape, mentor to greats like Gavaskar, dies aged 82

One of the unsung heroes of Indian cricket, Vasudeo Paranjape, passed away at his residence in Mumbai on Monday after a prolonged illness. Paranjape, popularly known as Vasoo, was three months short of turning 83. He is survived by his son Jatin, a former Mumbai batter, who also played four ODIs and recently co-authored a book about his father titled .While Paranjape’s playing career was short – 29 first-class matches for Mumbai and Baroda – he became a household name by mentoring the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sanjay Manjrekar and Rohit Sharma, helping them reach impressive heights in all forms of cricket. Paranjape’s gift was such that even a few overseas players like former England batter Ed Smith would come to him for advice.Related

  • Legendary Mumbai mentor who made a mark on Dravid, Gavaskar

Despite never making it to the highest level, Paranjape had a strong grasp on batting technique and the ability to help people get the most out of themselves. Paranjape developed this skill by watching greats like Madhav Mantri, his captain at Dadar Union, go about their business. And when he too rose through the same ranks and took over the club, Dadar Union went on a title-winning spree. They swept the Kanga League A division, Talim Shield, Purshottam Shield and the Comrade Shield. As much as those trophies symbolise the kind of leader Paranjape was, only the stories give a true sense of the man. Here is one involving Paranjape during his tenure as Dadar Union captain in the 1970s when the Bombay club was experiencing a golden era.

It begins with Paranjape pulling a fast one on a star-studded Bombay University side. Avadhoot Zarapkar, who was part of that match, remembers it well. “We were playing at Grant Medical College and the wicket was soft, so our captain decided to put Dadar Union in,” he told Clayton Murzello, sports editor at , in 2012. “We had Dilip Vengsarkar, Sandeep Patil, Suru Nayak and Vijay Mohan Raj. Their team included Sunil Gavaskar, Ramnath Parkar and Vithal Patil. We thought we had them grounded at 92 for 5, but Vasoo declared. We were shocked. I remember Sandeep asking whether Vasoo thought we were a [inferior] team. We were soon to find out. Urmikant Mody and Vithal Patil took five apiece to dismiss us for 55.”Paranjape’s reason for the declaration was simple. “There was a match to be won. If our team – which included a certain Sunil Gavaskar – found it so difficult to score, then the opposition would struggle too, though they were a very good side.”While promoting last year, Gavaskar said that Paranjape was the true “conscience keeper” of the game. “All of us at Dadar Union can’t thank him enough for his guidance, for his spirit, and most importantly for him being the conscience keeper of our beloved game of cricket. We learnt from him that we must always stay true to the game.”Gavaskar summed up by calling Paranjape a true servant of the game because he had given more to cricket than cricket had given to him. Testament to that fact is the early career of one Rohit Sharma, as the player himself recalls: “I got to learn from him how to approach batting in different situations. He always told us: ‘No two situations are the same. Try and read the game – where you are, what you can do for your team and the situation your team is in. Learn this as soon as you can because now is the time to learn, not when you are playing for Bombay or India.'”

Newcastle monitoring "strong" £50k-p/w target who scored at St James’ Park

Swiftly turning their attention towards 2025 after an underwhelming summer transfer window, Newcastle United and Paul Mitchell are now reportedly keeping tabs on one target who has already found the back of the net at St James’ Park.

Newcastle transfer news

There’s no doubt that the Magpies could do with a successful January transfer window following such a disastrous summer – what Eddie Howe needs is a transfer window to match the quality that his side has shown so far this season. The former Bournemouth boss has guided his side to within two points of the top four after just seven games in a run that has seen them suffer just the one defeat despite not playing their best stuff.

Of course, that run won’t stand in the way of Newcastle’s frustration after their 0-0 draw against Everton last time out, in which Anthony Gordon saw his penalty saved by former teammate Jordan Pickford, much to the delight of the Toffees support.

With the international break handing those at St James’ Park a couple of weeks to ponder such frustration, sporting director Mitchell has seemingly turned his attention towards the transfer window.

According to GiveMeSport, Mitchell is now monitoring Antoine Semenyo ahead of a potential move for Newcastle in the winter window or next summer. The Bournemouth winger has enjoyed an excellent start to the season for the Cherries, picking up where he left off last time out to become the star of the show once again.

Newcastle are well aware of his quality too, given that he scored in a 2-2 draw against the Magpies last season, as Bournemouth escaped St James’ Park with a well-earned point thanks to their winger. With Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur also reportedly interested in Semenyo, however, Newcastle and Mitchell will have to act fast in pursuit of his signature.

"Strong" Semenyo is a player on the rise

Much like Dominic Solanke did before leaving for Spurs in the summer, Semenyo is quickly making a name for himself on the South Coast and may well earn a big move as a result. So far this season, he’s arguably stolen more headlines than ever, having scored three goals and assisted another in just seven Premier League games as a player who only looks likely to get more and more clinical.

Wheeling away in celebration at St James’ Park last season, if Newcastle fans aren’t aware of Semenyo’s quality just yet, then a winter move should certainly give them a better look.

Full of praise for his £50,000-a-week winger, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola told reporters, via the Bournemouth Echo, earlier this season: “Past season, I remember that normally he started from the bench or he played 60, 65 minutes and you could see that he was starting to decline, it’s normal a little bit.

“Now he’s staying there, he’s finishing strong, the games. I think he’s one of the ones also who has played a lot of minutes with the national team and I hope he can keep this level.”

Juventus wages: Who is the best paid player at the Bianconeri and everything you need to know about Juve's salary bill

How much do Juve players earn annually and who receives the most into their account?

Juventus are among the most successful clubs in Europe, with the previous decade and a half marked by domestic dominance and some impressive runs in the Champions League.

In the last few seasons, though, they haven't made any high-profile signings, indicative of the team's dwindling influence as a major powerhouse in European football.

Not just that, but the Bianconeri were penalised for "financial irregularities" and "false accounting" in 2023, which came as a significant setback in terms of their fiscal standing in Italy and Europe.

To mitigate the severity of the consequences, Juventus have been prudent in their efforts to reduce the wage bill and not spend recklessly on new signings.

So, who is the highest earner for the Old Lady this season? And who is on the opposite end of the spectrum?

    Goalkeepers

Michele Di Gregorio is both the first-choice goalkeeper and the highest-paid goalkeeper at Juventus, just ahead of the veteran Mattia Perin, while 34-year-old Carlo Pinsoglio is the lowest-earning goalkeeper and also among the lowest-paid members of the squad.

    Michele Di Gregorio €3,700,000
    Mattia Perin €2,780,000
    Carlo Pinsoglio €560,000

    Defenders

The highest-paid defender at Juventus is Gleison Bremer, who earns an impressive €9 million plus annually.

Danilo, who's into the final five months of his Juve contract, is the second-highest paid defender at the club, which is something the Juventus faithful won't be too pleased to find out.

Full-back Andrea Cambiaso, who is important to head coach Thiago Motta, is third on the list with an annual package of over €4 million.

Nicolo Savona and Jonas Rouhi are earning the least, not just among defenders but also among the entire squad.

    Name Salary
    Gleison Bremer €9,260,000
    Danilo €5,130,000
    Andrea Cambiaso €4,440,000

    Midfielders

Douglas Luiz is the top-earning midfielder at Juventus, which doesn't come as a big surprise given that he made a high-profile move from Aston Villa last summer.

Arthur Melo and Manuel Locatelli are next in terms of salaries, with the duo earning over €6 million apiece. The fans would be furious to know Arthur earns such a high salary, given that he hasn't played a single minute under Motta this season.

Teun Koopmeiners won't be unhappy with his wages as the former Atalanta man is being paid close to €6 million annually. The same can be said about French midfielder Khephren Thuram and USMNT mainstay Weston McKennie.

Academy graduate Nicolo Fagioli is currently earning the least among all Juve midfielders.

    Name Salary
    Douglas Luiz €8,330,000
    Arthur Melo €6,410,000
    Manuel Locatelli €6,110,000
    Teun Koopmeiners €5,770,000
    Khephren Thuram €3,700,000

Dusan Vlahovic is the highest-paid forward at the club, and is among the players with the most lucrative deals in Serie A, earning a whopping €22,220,000 annually.

Young Portuguese sensation Francisco Conceicao and Argentine winger Nicolas Gonzalez earn identical wages, making them the second and the third-highest earning forwards on the roster.

Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik is the fourth-highest paid forward, ahead of the likes of Kenan Yildiz and Timothy Weah, who have been crucial to Motta this season.

Samuel Mbangula is the lowest-paid forward in the squad, having a six-figure annual salary.

Ben Charlesworth's 99* keeps Gloucestershire's hopes alive

Home side hopeful of reaching knockouts after seven-wicket win over Hampshire

Ben Charlesworth kept Gloucestershire’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the Royal London Cup alive with a career-best 99 not out in a seven-wicket win over Hampshire at Bristol. The 20-year-old left-hander smacked 13 fours, sharing an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 130 with Jack Taylor, who finished on 67, having been dropped twice, as the hosts reached a target of 205 with nine balls to spare. In a match reduced to 37 overs per side, Hampshire ran up 204 for 8 after winning the toss, Tom Alsop top-scoring with 57 and sharing an opening stand of 90 with Tom Prest.Graeme van Buuren claimed 3 for 36 with his left-arm spin and the total looked below par, despite a slow pitch. On a blustery day, play did not start until 1pm following heavy overnight rain. Both Hampshire openers rode their luck early, Prest being dropped on three by Tom Smith at point off Matt Taylor. It proved an expensive miss as Prest and Alsop brought up their fifty stand in the ninth over and added to it with increasing confidence until Smith atoned for his error by beating Prest’s defensive push and bowling him to end the partnership.Alsop went to his half-century off 61 balls before Nick Gubbins was caught at fine leg off Josh Shaw with the total on 110 in the 20th over.Things began to go awry for Hampshire when Joe Weatherley called for a single to short cover off Smith and Chris Dent’s throw to the wicketkeeper’s end saw Alsop run out.Ian Holland contributed 17 before falling lbw to van Buuren reverse sweeping and it was 145 for 5 when Weatherley was bowled by the same bowler on the back foot.Lewis McManus lifted a big six over mid-wicket off van Buuren, who took his revenge with a smart caught-and-bowled above his head to make it 190 for 6.Felix Organ was run out in a mix-up over a quick single and, although James Fuller hit a superb six over extra cover off Dan Worrall, a clatter of late wickets saw Hampshire’s innings fold disappointingly. With a required run rate of less than six an over, Gloucestershire openers Charlesworth and Dent began cautiously. They had taken the score to 47 in the 11th over when Dent fell leg before, trying to sweep off-spinner Prest, who quickly followed up by having Tom Lace caught off a top edge attempting the same shot.It was 75 for 3 when van Buuren fell lbw on the back foot to Holland and the game looked evenly poised. But Charlesworth was looking increasingly in command as he moved to fifty, from 67 balls, with a gloriously timed four, lifted elegantly back over off-spinner Organ’s head.Taylor attacked at every opportunity to reach a 47-ball half-century, but was lucky to get there as he was dropped at third man by Organ off John Turner on 49.The century stand occupied 90 deliveries. Taylor was dropped again on 63, by Turner at fine-leg off Weatherley, before Charlesworth pulled a boundary off Holland to pass his previous best score for Gloucestershire of 87. Time ran out for him to get a century but it was an innings rich with promise that he will long remember.

Why Friedkin is now set to miss out on signing Gareth Southgate for Everton

Everton have been dealt a blow in their efforts to bring Dan Friedkin’s primary target to replace Sean Dyche to the club, according to a new update.

Everton manager news

There was enormous relief on show at Goodison Park last weekend, as the Blues finally picked up their first victory of the season in the Premier League, winning 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace. The importance of the result cannot be overstated, given the negativity leading up to the game, with Everton at risk of being adrift in the relegation battle before the campaign had barely got underway.

For Dyche, it was particularly massive, with the Englishman battling to save his job after such a poor period for his team, during which time a host of different candidates have emerged to take his place in the Goodison dugout.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Both David Moyes and Gareth Southgate have been touted as option for the Blues, with the former potentially keen on a reunion and the latter not yet in a new job since exiting England after Euro 2024. Meanwhile, West Brom boss Carlos Corberan could also be a shrewd choice, having guided his side to the top of the Championship table currently.

Everton dealt blow over Friedkin managerial target

According to a new report from Give Me Sport, Southgate is hesitant to put his name in the hat for the potential Everton job, due to the fact that he is eyeing a move to Manchester United instead. Friedkin has reportedly eyed him up as his preferred choice to be Dyche’s successor, should he be relieved of his duties soon.

The 54-year-old is aware that Erik ten Hag is under huge pressure at Old Trafford, possibly even being one or two defeats away from losing his job, so he is waiting in the wings. He is described as a “genuine target for INEOS”, perhaps in part because he has a good relationship with sporting director Dan Ashworth.

If Southgate is the man Friedkin wants to take Everton into the future, then seeing him drop out of the race would be a blow, but at the same time, it shouldn’t be considered a disaster. He clearly did an impressive job in charge of England over eight years, reaching two major finals in Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, but he also had his detractors in that time.

There were plenty who felt that Southgate’s playing style was too negative, failing to get the best out of a supremely gifted group of players, and his only stint in club management came with Middlesbrough, who got relegated under him.

The Englishman could be a good option, but not getting him shouldn’t be treated as the end of the world, and as it stands, Dyche looks to have enough credit in the bank anyway. He is still undoubtedly under pressure, but the Palace win has given him some leeway ahead of the upcoming international break.

Sheffield Wednesday turn down approach to sell "very good" 27 y/o this week

Sheffield Wednesday are believed to have turned down an approach for a “very good” player who Danny Rohl values, according to a fresh transfer update.

Sheffield Wednesday news

The Owls are badly in need of finding some form in the Championship, even though they made it into the fourth round of the EFL Cup midweek, following their 1-0 win away to Blackpool.

In the league, Rohl’s side haven’t tasted victory since thumping Plymouth Argyle on the opening weekend of the season, losing their next three games in the competition after that, before drawing 1-1 at home to Queens Park Rangers last weekend. The manner of that result was hugely disappointing, however, given the ludicrous nature of the visitors’ scrambled last-gasp equaliser.

On Saturday, Wednesday make the trip to a Luton Town side who are only one place ahead of them in the table, and on the same number of points, arguably underperforming since their return to the Championship from the Premier League.

Away from the league action, transfer rumours have continued to emerge regarding the Owls, too, with youngster Sam Reed linked with a move away from Hillsborough on loan. He is wanted by National League clubs, who will be able to sign him outside the summer transfer window. Now, another exit update has also dropped with another player.

Sheffield Wednesday turn down approach for "very good" ace

According to a new update from The Star, Sheffield Wednesday have turned down an approach from Maccabi Tel Aviv for the signing of Pol Valentin this week, with contact made between the two clubs.

The report says that the Europa League side “had been keeping tabs on the full back’s progress and were considering making an offer” prior to the Israeli transfer window closing, but the Owls “shut it down”.

Pol Valentin for Sheffield Wednesday.

Keeping hold of Valentin makes complete sense for Wednesday even if he isn’t a vital player, with Rohl even stating that earlier this week, saying: “He is part of my squad. We need the competition at the right full-back position. That’s for me, no. No question mark.”

The 27-year-old has been a solid addition since arriving at Hillsborough last summer, providing competition at right-back and making a total of 48 appearances to date.

Admittedly, he has been limited to only one Championship start in 2024/25 to date, but he has been involved in every match in the competition, showing that he is an important squad figure. Meanwhile, former Wednesday manager Xisco Munoz once lauded his qualities, having brought him to the club:

“He has very good intensity. I know a lot about Pol, not only his capacity as a footballer but a personality as well and this is very good. This is important because I know exactly what he can give to the team. He was with me when he was very young with Gimnastic and I know how he has progressed.”

Rohl a fan: Clubs keen to sign Sheffield Wednesday 21 y/o on loan right now

The Owls could sanction the move.

ByHenry Jackson Sep 17, 2024

Valentin may understandably be keen for more playing time, but given the number of fixtures this season, he may soon get more starts to his name, dovetailing with the likes of Yan Valery and Liam Palmer in the process.
