WHAT FORMER PREMIER LEAGUE CEO SAID

Wyness – who spent five years working in the Premier League at Goodison Park and is a now a football consultant to elite clubs – has told of why the City saga may drag on for some time yet: "The theory is that a verdict will be due at the end of the year. As far as I know, they’re in the hearing every day – I don’t know if there have been breaks for certain witnesses. There’s a big veil of secrecy over the whole thing.

"Getting a verdict in 2024 is certainly the ambition but I still think this will drag on further. This is a big, big case with a lot of expert witnesses, testimony and documents to examine. I’ll be surprised if they can finish it this year. I’m expecting it to drag and drag and I think that will be one of City’s tactics – to keep pushing and delaying as far as they can."

Beuran Hendricks, Keegan Petersen withdrawn from South Africa Test squad

Neither player entered tour bubble ahead of Sri Lanka series after two Covid positives detected

Beuran Hendricks and Keegan Petersen have been withdrawn from South Africa’s Test squad to play Sri Lanka.Neither player entered the tour bubble when the playing group convened on Saturday, after two positive Covid-19 results were detected last week. CSA cannot, for reasons of doctor-patient confidentiality, name who the infected players are.The other 17 squad members have tested negative on all three occasions, thus making the environment bio-secure. South Africa will not add any players to the squad for the two-Test series which starts on Boxing Day.Having cleared three rounds of testing, South Africa can begin training as a full squad on Wednesday after having staggered sessions so far. They will also no longer be confined to their hotel rooms at the Irene Country Club and can use communal areas, with social distancing rules in place, but will not come into contact with Sri Lanka, who are housed at the same venue. In addition, they will not be permitted to leave the venue except to travel to SuperSport Park and the Wanderers for the duration of the series.Related

Sri Lanka's tour of South Africa set to go ahead as planned

Cricket South Africa have enforced stricter controls for this series than they did for the England tour – in which players were allowed to play golf at various courses around the Western Cape province – both at the behest of Sri Lanka Cricket and because the England tour was unsuccessful.Three South African players tested positive for Covid-19 – one before the tour, one after entering the bubble and one after the T20 series – as did two hotel staff, and the one-day series was postponed. Two members of England’s touring party also tested positive although, on verification, their results were confirmed as false positives. South Africa, who are also due to host Australia this summer, need the Sri Lanka series to take place without incident to get their international hosting back on track. For that reason, they pushed the final round of domestic first-class matches, which were due to start last Sunday, into next year following positive cases in two of the three matches that began on December 13. Hendricks, Petersen and eight other players in the national squad were part of two of those games. At SuperSport Park, the match between the Titans and the Dolphins was called off after the first day because a Dolphins’ players tested positive while in Bloemfontein, the game between the Knights and the Lions continued despite a Lions’ player testing positive on day three. Several more Dolphins and Lions players were also found to be infected. The impact has been felt by the national squad who have lost at least one certain starter for the Sri Lanka Tests. Hendricks, who has only played one Test, would most likely have been the third seamer in the absence of the injured Kagiso Rabada. Hendricks debuted at the Wanderers last summer and took six wickets in the match, including 5 for 64 in the second innings, and is familiar with conditions up-country, having made the Lions his domestic home. Instead, South Africa will rely on Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje for experience and could hand a debut to Glenton Stuurman, Migael Pretorius or Lutho Sipamla.Petersen was less likely to play than Hendricks but, after three summers averaging over 50 domestically, he made a strong case to be considered at No.3. He should also have been the next man in line after being a non-playing member of the squad last season but will have to make way for one of Sarel Erwee, Raynard van Tonder or Kyle Verreynne for now.Updated squad: Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Rassie van der Dussen, Anrich Nortje, Glenton Stuurman, Sarel Erwee, Wiaan Mulder, Kyle Verreynne, Migael Pretorius, Dwaine Pretorius, Lutho Sipamla, Raynard van Tonder

He’s like Trossard: Arsenal want to re-sign £34m sensation to rival Saka

With the Euros out of the way and another season of Premier League football on the horizon, will it be third time's the charm for Arsenal in 2024/25?

After two seasons of challenging Manchester City at the top of the table, Mikel Arteta and his squad of talented players must take that next step before they begin to lose momentum.

The best thing that Edu Gaspar and the club at large can do to help them in that endeavour is to bring in some quality additions in the transfer window.

Luckily for fans, that may well happen, as the latest player touted for a move to the Emirates has been compared to Leandro Trossard and would be the perfect rival for Bukayo Saka on the right – oh, and he's already played for the club before.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from German publication Bild, Arsenal are interested in Borussia Dortmund's Dutch attacker, Donyell Malen.

Donyell Malen for Borussia Dortmund.

The report claims that the 25-year-old dynamo is considering his future and eyeing a challenge away from Germany, and in an interview from earlier this year, he opened the door for a return to N5, where he spent several years as a youth player before moving to PSV in 2017.

The good news for the Gunners is that this potential signing wouldn't cost them an arm and a leg, as the report has revealed that Dortmund are prepared to sell him for around £34m.

It wouldn't be a bargain, but given his performances last season, the comparisons to Trossard and the potential that he could offer Saka a real challenge on the right, £34m doesn't seem too bad.

Malen's comparison to Trossard and Saka

Now, before assessing how Malen stacks up against Saka and how effective he could be as a challenger to the incredible Englishman, let's look at this comparison to Trossard.

It stems from FBref, which compares every player in Europe's top five leagues based on their position and then creates a list of the ten most comparable for each player and, in this case, they have identified the Belgian as the most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Dortmund ace across those five competitions.

The easiest way to see this similarity is by looking at the underlying numbers where the pair rank quite closely, such as non-penalty expected goals and assists, actual non-penalty goals and assists, progressive carries and passes received, key passes, aerial duels won and shot-creating actions, all per 90.

That said, while the comparisons to the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace are now far clearer, how would the "sizzling" Dutchman, as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, get on as a rival to the Gunners' Hale End superstar on the right?

Well, the first thing to say is that while he would likely be talked about as a rival for the Englishman, in reality, he'd probably end up becoming a backup, which, given the Ealing-born superstar's tally of 20 goals and 14 assists in 47 games last season is not a slight at all.

However, even as a de facto backup for the 22-year-old ace, the former PSV winger would still get plenty of game time across all the competitions Arsenal are set to play in next season.

Moreover, considering he scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 38 games last season, he'd be an incredible weapon off the bench for Arteta.

Ultimately, Malen proved that he was more than good enough to play for a top team last season, and while he would almost certainly remain behind Saka in the pecking order at the Emirates, he'd still end up getting a fair amount of game time as the Gunners look to attack on all fronts next season.

Moreover, if he's the player who can finally allow the North Londoners' number seven to get some genuine rest during the season, then his importance to the team would stem from more than what he can do on the pitch. Therefore, Edu and Co should do what they can to bring him to the club this summer.

Arsenal make player plus cash offer for £12,000-per-week "monster" – report

Arsenal have made a player plus cash offer for one of their top transfer targets this summer, according to the latest reports.

Mikel Arteta keen to go one better

Just like England, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side have suffered back to back heartbreaks after finishing as runners up to Manchester City across both of the previous Premier League seasons.

Pipped by just two points in the most recent campaign, the Gunners are expected to strengthen this summer as they look to make it third time lucky against Pep Guardiola's side.

So far though, business has been slow. The north London side have signed David Raya on a permanent deal from Brentford after impressing on loan last season, a campaign in which he won the golden glove with Arsenal.

They are also closing in on a deal to sign teenage goalkeeper Tommy Setford, with a move from Ajax believed to be in the closing stages.

The focus has largely been on exits though, with English quartet Aaron Ramsdale, Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah all believed to be up for sale this summer in a bid to raise funds for incomings.

So far, only two players have departed, with both Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares having left north London for Seville and Rome respectively. Another exit seems likely soon, and Arsenal are trying to use it as a chance to land one of their summer targets.

Gunners offer defender in deal

That comes in the shape of Jakub Kiwior, who has endured a mixed spell at the Emirates Stadium since his arrival in January 2023. Deployed either at left centre-back or more regularly at left back, the Poland international started just 11 Premier League games last season and that number is likely to reduce further with Jurrien Timber's return from injury.

Now, the Gunners have reportedly tried to use him in a deal to sign another left-footed centre back. That, of course, is Bologna's Riccardo Calafiori, who has risen to the top of Arsenal's wishlist with a strong EURO 2024 showing on top of an excellent season in Serie A.

Dubbed a "monster" by analyst Ben Mattinson on X, the 6 foot 2 defender was wanted by Chelsea but they have since pulled out of a move, and the 22-year-old seems likely to end up with Arsenal this summer.

According to Bologna outlet Il Resto del Carlino, the Italian is keen to join Arsenal and has accepted personal terms on a five-year deal in north London worth 5m euros per season (roughly £80,000 per week), which is a massive increase on his current £12,000 per week deal with the Serie A side.

Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori

However, an agreement with Arsenal is not so easy, thanks in part to Swiss side Basel having a 50% claim to any fee taken in for Calafiori.

To try and get around this, it is claimed by the same outlet that Arsenal offered Bologna the services of Kiwior on loan with an obligation to buy the defender next summer, but that the Italian side rejected the proposal.

However, The Telegraph claim that despite this failure, there remains "a growing expectation that a deal will be done" in the weeks to come, and that Calafiori will be plying his trade at the Emirates Stadium next season.

Ahead of Crystal Palace's EFL Cup Round 4 clash with Aston Villa on Wednesday, Palace manager Oliver Glasner handed U.S. Men's National Team goalkeeper Matt Turner his first start with the London club.

Turner joined the Premier League side from Nottingham Forest during the summer transfer window on a season-long loan. For the American, it is his first appearance since February 28, when he started against Manchester United in an FA Cup clash.

Turner has struggled for playing time during the calendar year at the club level since losing his starting spot in the Winter at Forest. The club brought in former Strasbourg goalkeeper Matz Sels in the January transfer window, with the Belgian taking Turner's spot in net shortly after.

Despite the lack of playing time, Turner has remained the No. 1 goalkeeper in the USMNT player pool, leading the U.S. to a 2024 Concacaf Nations League title and starting in last summer's Copa America.

He was also in the side against both Panama and Mexico in October – new manager Mauricio Pochettino's first games in charge of the program.

DID YOU KNOW?

Turner has made more appearances for his country than he has at the club level in the 2024 calendar year. For the USMNT, he has made 10 appearances across all competitions, while at the club level, he has made just five.

Ged Stokes, father of Ben, dies after cancer battle, aged 65

Ged Stokes, the former New Zealand rugby league international and father of England allrounder Ben, has died at the age of 65 after a year-long battle with brain cancer. The news was announced by Ged Stokes’ former rugby league club, Workington Town, for whom he played one season in 1982-83, before returning as coach in 2003, when the family, including 12-year-old Ben, emigrated from New Zealand to Cumbria.”It is with great sadness that we learn our former player and coach Ged Stokes has passed away,” the club wrote in a tribute on Twitter. “Ged is written into the rich fabric of Town history and will be greatly missed.”Our thoughts are with Deb, Ben and James. Ged still has many, many friends here in West Cumbria and we send our thoughts to them too.”The news comes almost 12 months after Ged first fell ill with brain cancer, during England’s Test tour of South Africa in December 2019. In the wake of his diagnosis, Ben was granted indefinite leave to spend time with his family in New Zealand during England’s Test series against Pakistan in August. He returned to cricket in October after missing the opening rounds of Rajasthan Royals’ IPL campaign, with the “love and blessing” of his family, and went on to feature in the three-match T20I leg of England’s tour of South Africa, before flying home last week ahead of the postponed ODIs.”Saying goodbye to my dad, my mum and my brother in Christchurch was tough,” Stokes wrote in October in his column in the Daily Mirror. “It has been a difficult time for us as a family, but we’ve pulled together and supported each other as best we can.”And I was able to get on the plane with my parents’ love and blessing after we reached the decision, for me to get back playing, as a family with no external influences.”Ben Stokes has often cited the influence of his father throughout his playing career, and regularly dedicates his on-field milestones to him with a three-fingered salute, in recognition to the finger amputation that Ged underwent during his rugby league days in New Zealand.”My dad was very strong on the responsibilities I have,” Stokes added. “He told me I have a duty to do the job that I do and I have a duty as a husband and father as well.”We gave it all a lot of thought and talked it over at length, and we came to a decision that now sees me back focusing on the game.”

Wolves now keen on signing "amazing" new £30m star who just outscored Neto

As they look to get their summer business underway, Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly keen on signing an attacking reinforcement for Gary O'Neil who enjoyed even outscored Pedro Neto last season.

Wolves transfer news

The Midlands club exceeded expectations last season by comfortably avoiding relegation in O'Neil's debut season, but now face potential outgoings in the coming months, including Max Kilman. The central defender has attracted interest from the likes of Newcastle United and West Ham United with the latter even expected to send a fresh proposal to sign the 27 year old, as per Fabrizio Romano.

As one star seemingly edges closer to the exit door, however, another could yet be on his way in this summer, as Wolves look to add to O'Neil's frontline ahead of next season.

Wolves could promote "outstanding" youngster if Semedo leaves this summer

He has been on loan twice this season

ByJoe Nuttall Jun 26, 2024

According to GiveMeSport, Wolves are now keen to sign Jack Clarke from Sunderland this summer, but value the winger below the Black Cats' reported price tag of £25m-£30m.

The winger enjoyed a superb campaign even amid Sunderland's collective struggles last season and his agent has even admitted that he hopes to see a move take place this summer. Whether that ends with a Wolves shirt remains to be seen, however, given that Crystal Palace are also reportedly interested.

Jack Clarke

It would be quite the moment if Clarke managed to return to the Premier League this summer just two years after leaving Tottenham Hotspur as a struggling prospect two years ago. Wolves, meanwhile, could land a player capable of replacing Neto, should the Portugal winger depart in the coming months.

"Amazing" Clarke can replace Neto

With Neto's Wolves future still in doubt, welcoming a player of Clarke's talent feels more important than ever in the Midlands. The Sunderland man comes with a hefty price tag, but the potential sale of Kilman and perhaps even Neto could quickly hand them the funds needed to make such a move happen this summer.

Where Neto's a provider, Clarke is more of a goalscorer and would instantly offer Wolves another dynamic going forward. If Wolves can keep hold of Neto and welcome Clarke, then having two players who can offer both elements going forward would be a game-changer for O'Neil next season.

Looking at the numbers, it's no surprise that former manager Tony Mowbray was previously full of praise for Clarke, saying via Chronicle Live: "I had a big shout at him at half-time, to be honest, I thought he was really poor for 20 minutes but his reaction was amazing.

"We can't sit here and question Jack Clarke's talent, he has double-figure goals now from the left wing and I think probably double-figure assists as well. He's a great player and yet he has to understand – and in my mind he is still a young boy – that we need 90 minutes, not a brilliant 60 minutes."
