Rajasthan Royals fielding coach Dishant Yagnik tests positive for Covid-19

He has been advised to get admitted to hospital for a 14-day quarantine

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Aug-2020Rajasthan Royals fielding coach, and former Rajasthan wicketkeeper, Dishant Yagnik has tested positive for Covid-19, the franchise confirmed in a statement on Wednesday. He is currently in his hometown of Udaipur and has been advised to get admitted to a hospital for a 14-day quarantine. The Covid-19 tests for the Royals players and support staff were conducted before they were to assemble in Mumbai next week before flying to the UAE for IPL 2020. After his 14-day quarantine, Yagnik will undergo two more tests as per the BCCI’s protocols. If he tests negative in both, he can leave for the UAE where he will have to self-isolate for six days before undergoing three more tests. Only after clearing those, he would be allowed to join the team.”The franchise implemented an extra test for all players, support staff and management travelling to the UAE in addition to the two tests recommended by BCCI, to ensure as robust a process as possible,” the Royals statement said. “We request everyone who has been in close proximity to Dishant in the past 10 days to self isolate and get tested for COVID-19.”We can confirm that no Rajasthan Royals or other IPL players have been in close proximity to Dishant in the past 10 days. We wish Dishant a speedy recovery and look forward to him joining the Royals camp soon in the UAE.”

Yagnik had played for the Royals in the IPL from 2011 to 2014 and in the Champions League T20 in 2013, for a total of 27 matches. He has also represented Rajasthan across formats in the Indian domestic circuit, from 2002-03 to 2017. Recently, he had been roped in as Puducherry’s fielding coach for the 2020-21 domestic season.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Earps joined Paris Saint-Germain this summer following the end of her contract with Manchester United – as she called it time on her five-year stint with the Red Devils. The Lionesses star has already got involved in Les Parisiennes' team dynamics as she joined PSG's pre-season tour bus around the city of Paris.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Earps' Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Sakina Karchaoui posted a story on Instagram with the Lionesses star looking out of the bus taking in the sights of the 'City of Love'. In the video, Karchaoui along with team-mates Jackie Groenen and Aissatou Tounkara jokingly mocked Earps as she seemed out of sorts, with the left-back asking the England keeper: "Are you okay?"

  • WHAT EARPS SAID

Earps has now responded to the funny story on Instagram, as she said: "FFS. Just looking around trying to take in the Paris sights."

Next Rangers manager: 7 potential Philippe Clement replacements

Glasgow Rangers have the chance to win a domestic cup double in a couple of weeks as they aim to win the Scottish Cup for the second time in three years at Hampden.

Celtic stand in their way, but if Philippe Clement could steer the Gers to a famous victory, then surely it would have been a successful season.

In terms of picking up the club from the doldrums under Michael Beale and giving them some hope, then, of course, having the chance to add a Scottish Cup trophy to the League Cup from earlier this term is a wonderful effort.

However, with several of the senior players in the squad letting the rest of the side down, dropping points when it mattered most, it is certainly a feeling of deja vu, as this scenario has occurred a few times in recent seasons.

The Belgian must undertake a total revamp of the playing squad, getting rid of those who lack the mental capacity to perform when the pressure is on, bringing in his own targets instead in the hope that they can inspire the club to succeed.

The 50-year-old has a lot of credit in the bank for the way he has steered the club away from a crisis, yet if the same players let him down next season after he fails to sell them, could his position become at risk?

Who could succeed the former Club Brugge manager if he was to lose his job? Here are seven candidates who have been linked with the club at one stage or another, including a former Chelsea icon and one who knows what it's like to play for Rangers…

1 Kevin Muscat Shanghai Port

Yokohama manager Kevin Muscat.

After seeing Celtic achieve plenty of success under Australian coach Ange Postecoglou, it looked as though Rangers were going to go down the same road when Beale was sacked last October.

Muscat succeeded Ange at Yokohama F. Marinos in 2021, winning the J1 title in 2022 with the club.

Despite Clement getting the job, Muscat claimed that he did speak to the club regarding the vacant role.

2 Frank Lampard Unattached (last full-time job: Everton)

The former Chelsea manager was one of the names linked with a move to Rangers following the sacking of Beale.

His last stint in management came at Everton, where he was removed from his duties in January 2023, still without a club at the time of writing.

Despite reportedly holding talks with the Ibrox chiefs about a return to management, Lampard wasn’t offered a formal interview, thus not getting the job. Might he ne offered one the next time, however?

3 Pascal Jansen Unattached (Last job: AZ Alkmaar)

AZ Alkmaar boss Pascal Jansen.

The Dutchman worked wonders with AZ Alkmaar during his four-year spell in charge of the club, leading them to three successive top-five finishes in the Eredivisie and this clearly attracted attention from the Ibrox side last year.

Before Clement arrived, Jansen was one of the names linked with a move to Glasgow in order to succeed Beale.

Nothing materialised, and he was “surprised” to be in consideration for the role during an interview after it was filled by the Belgian.

Jansen was sacked by AZ in January 2024 after nearly four years in charge of the club.

4 Graham Potter Unattached (Last job: Chelsea)

Graham Potter as Chelsea manager

The Englishman reportedly turned down the chance to manage Rangers back in October after being approached about succeeding Beale, but the former Brighton and Hove Albion manager was clearly in no rush to get back into management.

Following a few successful seasons on the south coast, Chelsea paid a reported £21.5m to bring him to London in order to succeed Thomas Tuchel.

Seven months later, he was gone and has been out of work since, although there have been plenty of offers.

While he may be at another club by the time Rangers are looking for another new manager, could he still be a realistic candidate?

5 Kjetil Knutsen Bodo/Glimt

Bodo/Glimt head coach Kjetil Knutsen.

The Norwegian coach has worked wonders at Bodo/Glimt since taking over in 2018. Not only has he led the club to three league titles, but also made progress in Europe, beating Celtic 5-1 on aggregate in the Europa Conference League during the 2021/22 campaign.

Journalist Alan Nixon stated in October that the Light Blues would speak to Knutsen regarding the vacant managerial role at Ibrox.

Clement was appointed soon after, however, and this may have been the final chance for the club to sign him, as if he keeps impressing in Norway, his next move could well be to England.

6 Derek McInnes Kilmarnock

Derek McInnes

Towards the end of 2017, Rangers were looking for their third permanent manager in the space of 12 months after Pedro Caixinha was sacked.

McInnes, then working wonders at Aberdeen, was offered the post, but ended up rejecting the chance to manage the team he had played for between 1995 and 2000.

His name did crop again when Beale was sacked last year, but nothing came to fruition, despite his excellent worth with current side Kilmarnock, who he has led to fourth spot in the top flight this season.

7 Oliver Glasner Crystal Palace

Glasner took over at Palace back in February and, since his appointment, the Eagles have been on a solid run of form.

Recently, they have defeated Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle United, with the future looking bright indeed under the Austrian.

He was also a name linked with the Rangers job in October. Glasner was the man in charge of Eintracht Frankfurt when they defeated the Light Blues in the Europa League final in 2022, clearly proving he knows how to succeed on the big stages.

It looks as though Glasner is another name that has slipped through the net, as reportedly Bayern Munich have shown an interest in the current Palace manager, but it looks as though he will remain with the London side after enjoying a strong start to life at the club.

Ange sees Tottenham star as weak link and eyes move for £50m+ replacement

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has identified one player as a "weak link" in his team and personally wants a £55.6 million star to replace him this summer.

Spurs ready to back Postecoglou with key summer signings

The Australian's debut season in the Spurs dugout can be seen as a successful one overall, with his brand of high-pressing, forward-thinking football winning over plenty of admirers at N17 – both inside and outside the club.

Tottenham now offered £17m new midfielder who Pochettino wanted in 2019

He’s even been likened to David Silva.

ByEmilio Galantini May 17, 2024

Even though Tottenham missed out on Champions League football next season, European football is still in the bag, which is a huge improvement from Antonio Conte's disastrous final campaign in charge of the club before Postecoglou's arrival.

The Lilywhites head coach has also repeatedly stated that a finish in the top four was far less important than the overall progression of his side in a footballing sense.

“My position on it is not so much, particularly this year, where we finish, it’s what kind of team we are, because if we finish fourth and we’re 25 points off the top, I’m not sure that’s the kind of trajectory we want to be on," said Postecoglou on fourth place in early April.

Tottenham's final five games of the season

Sheffield United 0-3 Tottenham

Tottenham 0-2 Man City

Tottenham 2-1 Burnley

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

“It’s part of making sure that we’re all focussed on what the ultimate ambition is. If we finish fourth this year, what it does show is that we’re progressing and we’ve made improvements, but that’s not the end goal. That’s why, for me, it’s much more important how we play between now and the end of the year, and how we finish.

"Then, we assess things. If we finish fourth and I feel we’ve made some progress and we’re set up for next year, then I’ll be pleased with that.”

While Postecoglou will be unfazed by finishing fifth, he has also been adamant that the Tottenham squad needs to undergo "drastic" change this summer. Spurs are ready to back their manager with key signings to kickstart Postecoglou's rebuild, with many players also up for sale. This list of surplus Spurs squad members apparently includes forward Richarlison, despite the Brazilian's haul of 11 goals and four assists in the Premier League alone

Ange outlines Richarlison as Spurs weak link as he eyes Sesko

As per information relayed by TEAMtalk, Postecoglou has run out of patience with Richarlison and believes he is a "weak link" going forward. RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, as a result, is attracting their real interest.

Benjamin Sesko

Postecoglou apparently thinks Sesko is a "perfect upgrade" on Richarlison, and the latter is said to be the subject of admiration in Saudi Arabia. Pro League champions Al Hilal are thought to be in pole position to sign Richarlison, as per TT, amid claims they could splash out as much as £50 million to sign him from Tottenham.

Sesko's release clause stands at around £55.6 million, so Richarlison's sale to the Middle East could mean that Spurs may not even spend that much on the 6 foot 5 centre-forward when taking into account net spend.

No excuses for another slow start as Joe Root lauds fast-bowling 'battery'

They may have a poor record at the start of a series, but Joe Root believes England have a “head start” before their first game against Pakistan.England have, infamously, lost the first Test in eight of their 10 most recent series (excluding the one-off match against Ireland), including the last five. And while they have gone on to win their last two series despite such setbacks, they know that they cannot afford to put themselves at such a disadvantage against a side they have not beaten, home or away, since 2010.The difference on this occasion is that, having just won a three-match series against West Indies, England should, in Root’s words, be “up to speed” with the pace and demands of Test cricket. Furthermore, two of those games – the two England won – against West Indies were played at the same Emirates Old Trafford where the first Test against Pakistan will take place, allowing England to familiarise themselves with the pitch. And, with England utilising the depth of their seam-bowling resources to ensure none of their fast bowlers were obliged to play in more than two matches, they should be both in rhythm but fresh enough to hit the ground running.”Having played some competitive Test cricket will serve us well,” Root said. “It will give us a bit of a head start.”Fortunately, we have three games under our belt coming into this. We played some really good cricket in the last two so the guys are up to speed. We are familiar with the rhythm of Test cricket too, so there is no excuse going into this week. Having good success on this ground in two Test matches will fill our group with a huge amount of confidence.”We are playing some very good cricket at the minute; as well as we have done for a while. We are used to playing in this environment, having had three games under our belt now, and feel we are starting to emulate our game-plan more consistently. The challenge for us will continue to keep trying to nail that as much as possible and becoming more consistent.”ALSO READ: England delay team announcement amid Stokes bowling doubtPakistan, by contrast, have not played a Test since February. They’d had one first-class game on the tour, but it was an intra-squad encounter which was curtailed by rain and did not see any batsman reach fifty. They also lost their previous Test in Manchester, in 2016, by 330 runs. Root, however, is aware of Pakistan’s fine overall record – they drew their last two series in England – and is adamant his side should not exhibit any complacency.”It’s really important we don’t take it for granted,” Root said. “We are very aware Pakistan are a talented team and very up for this series.”We are all very aware that, in previous series, we have not got off to the best starts and we have been one-nil down, so the focus this time is trying to get a win early on and trying to drive the series from there.”It always feels like hard work when you are behind in the series. We want to make sure we start well this time around. We are very aware of it.”England’s other advantage is the depth of their seam-bowling resources. In another era, the likes of Craig Overton and Ollie Robinson might well have been opening the bowling in Test cricket. Right now, however, neither can command a place in the squad and there will, at some stage in the series, be some more high-profile omissions.Jack Leach, Mark Wood and Stuart Broad walk to training•Getty Images

Continuing doubts over Ben Stokes’ ability to bowl may lead England to stick with the same four-man pace attack they utilised in the final Test against West Indies, although there may also be questions over the inclusion of the spinner Dom Bess ahead of the batsman Zak Crawley. Bess played ahead of Crawley in that game, but did not bowl a ball in either innings. Crawley’s omission also meant Root had to bat at No. 3 – a position he had made clear he would rather avoid, even though he scored a double-century from there against Pakistan in 2016 – and left Jos Buttler at No. 6 and Chris Woakes at No. 7.Either way, the only man whose inclusion Root would guarantee was Stuart Broad, who claimed 10 for 67 in the previous Test. But he did also suggest at least one of Jofra Archer or Mark Wood would play to ensure the England attack had a pace option.”Stuart will play tomorrow,” Root said. “Will a fast bowler be included? I think so. We want that balance of attack. It’s something we’ve looked at in the past. Long-term we’re looking at wanting that extra pace and variation. We feel around the world that gives us a lot better chance of taking 20 wickets consistently.”While Root acknowledged he faced a “really tough call” over the last bowling space, with Woakes, Archer, Anderson and Wood contesting two or three positions, he suggested it was an encouraging reflection of England’s overall depth.”It’s a really tough call,” Root said. “But if we’re going to become the No. 1 side in the world we’re going to have to have a battery of fast bowlers who can come in and perform. Especially if we are going to play back-to-back Test matches in the series.”It’s important we have options and can rotate if guys are sore or stiff. For the longevity of this team it’s important we look after our fast bowlers and make smart decisions at the right time, and we’ll get judged on results. It’s tough but good tough.”

Emery struck gold selling Villa flop who earned more than Watkins & Bailey

Unai Emery has done a wonderful job at Aston Villa, but the renowned European trophy specialist is facing a surprise semi-final exit from the Europa Conference League.

The Spaniard's sapped Villa side have been exemplary this season and are poised to finish in the top four for the first time since 1995/96, under Brian Little, barring successive defeats to close the campaign and an improbable late resurgence from Tottenham Hotspur, who have lost four in a row in the Premier League.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

Much of the roaring Lions faithful would cherish triumph in a cup competition, but Emery's side face the very real threat of falling against Greek side Olympiacos after losing 4-2 at Villa Park in last Thursday's first leg.

While the toil of a high-intensity, unrelenting campaign appears to have taken its toll on a remarkable team that is now showing signs of wear and tear, there is still plenty to fight for, plenty to rejoice over, with two men in particular, Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey, supercharging the pursuit of something greater, light at the end of a deep, dark tunnel.

Bailey and Watkins' performances this season

Watkins and Bailey have formed one of the Premier League's most lethal partnerships this season, with the brilliant striking threat of the former melding with Bailey's dynamic skill set to put the initial grumblings over his poor performances to bed.

Indeed, Villa signed Bailey from Bayer Leverkusen for £25m back in 2021 and he was remarked to be "struggling" under Emery's wing only last year, according to journalist Ashley Preece, posting only four goals and four assists during the 2022/23 Premier League season.

The 26-year-old is now flying high as a central figure in the Villan system, scoring 14 goals and adding 14 assists in all competitions this season and being praised for his "special" qualities by journalist Bence Bocsak.

He's been fantastic, but he hasn't been as good as Watkins, whose astounding potency in attacking phases has been vital to his side's rise and rise under Emery, now destined for a date with the Champions League after many, many years away from Europe's elite.

The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell has even called the Three Lions phenom "virtually unplayable" for his extraordinary efforts, ranking among the top 19% of centre-forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals but also among the top 4% for assists per 90, as per FBref.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins

Villa fans have been blessed to witness two of the Premier League's finest forwards of the season, week in, week out. Emery has got many things right since succeeding Steven Gerrard in the dugout back in 2022 but there's perhaps been no bigger triumph than shipping a certain forward on swiftly.

Danny Ings didn't have the desired impact at Aston Villa, and had he not been sold when he was, the likes of Bailey and Watkins might not have found the freedom to rise to their current levels of brilliance.

Why Aston Villa signed Danny Ings

Ings was a household name on English shores following a fantastic stint at Southampton, scoring 46 goals and supplying ten assists across 100 outings for the South Coast club, praised for being a "goal machine" by reporter Joe Prince-Wright.

A Premier League-proven scorer with a commanding presence in the final third: Ings was exactly what Aston Villa needed, and so Dean Smith forged ahead with a deal to sign the three-cap England international for a fee of £25m in August 2021.

His past feats didn't seem to translate to life in the Midlands, where the now 31-year-old bagged seven goals and added six assists across 30 Premier League appearances, though he only started 22 times as he failed to exude the authority and prowess of seasons past.

Why Aston Villa sold Danny Ings

Ings scored just 14 goals across 52 matches for Aston Villa, and while he enjoyed relative success during the first half of the 2022/23 campaign, scoring five goals across his final eight Premier League matches for the Villa Park side, Emery swiftly decided to cut his club's losses on the player.

So when West Ham United came calling and tabled a £15m offer to bring Ings to east London, it was a no-brainer, with the Spanish manager clearly recognising the potential of players such as Watkins and Bailey, bolstering these gems with the addition of Jhon Duran, the teenager arriving from Colorado Rapids for £18m at the same time of Ings' sale.

The list above emphasises quite clearly the urgency to ship Ings on when it became apparent that he wasn't going to solidify a role of clinical prominence at Villa Park, enjoying a comparative rate of scoring but suffering several niggling injuries during his stay and being deemed expendable by Emery, who had big plans to strengthen across the park.

It's hard to argue that the 52-year-old was wrong to take this bold approach; just look at how the team has gone from strength to strength since.

Moreover, Ings – who, as shown above, was earning more than both Bailey and Watkins (£75k-per-week) – has only scored four goals across 50 fixtures for West Ham, failing to unleash more than a tincture of his past style and swagger.

And, as such, recent reports have suggested that the Hammers have transfer-listed the striker for just £6.5m, further illuminating the success in recouping £15m for his services in 2023.

Aston Villa target £52m Emery favourite who plays like Grealish

Unai Emery’s team would solidify their hopeful status among Europe’s elite with this ambitious signing.

ByAngus Sinclair May 7, 2024

It might not have been the most lucrative of sales – let's not forget that Villa suffered a loss on Ings – but given his present woes, it's a good job that Emery and his team moved swiftly to ship in on before the rot spread.

It was a critical juncture but one that paid off, with the outfit's free-flowing attack reaping the rewards.

Arsenal keen on £50m+ "absolute tank" who’s expected to leave this summer

Arsenal are keeping a close eye on the situation of a Premier League star as they look to bolster their ranks this summer, according to reports.

Gunners relying on City slip-up

Despite a run of form that has seen them take 40 from a possible 45 points in 2024, Arsenal are still relying on Manchester City to drop points in their final four games of the season should they be able to lift their first Premier League title since 2004.

Mikel Arteta's side came through a nervy North London derby with three points on Sunday, despite the best efforts of the Arsenal players to throw it away in the second half after David Raya passed the ball to Cristian Romero and Declan Rice gave away a penalty.

They then watched on as Nottingham Forest spurned several glorious opportunities to take points off Manchester City, eventually succumbing to a 2-0 loss against the Champions.

It leaves City just a point behind the Gunners, but crucially with a game in hand on the north Londoners, and with a favourable looking fixture list between now and the end of the campaign.

Both sides are certain to strengthen in the summer, with the Gunners in particular in clear need of additions both in defence and midfield, though the emergence of Kai Havertz may have tempered the need for a new striker this summer.

Premier League star in Arsenal's sights

Their quest to bolster the depth in defence comes in the form of a raid on yet another Premier League side, with the Gunners thought to be keeping a close eye on Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The Englishman has missed the last two months with a knee injury but is expected to be part of the England squad chosen by Gareth Southgate to head to EURO 2024 this summer.

Beyond that though, his future is unclear. He has just two years left on his deal at Selhurst Park and has attracted attention from both Arsenal and Manchester United this season, with the Times reporting that the pair have "scouted him extensively" over the course of the campaign. Chelsea are also keeping tabs on the situation, and the Blues have the right to match any bid made for him thanks to a clause in the deal that sent him to Selhurst Park from Stamford Bridge.

His qualities are undeniable, and he has left quite an impression on former teammates too. When with the U21s, his strength left his fellow England youth players in shock, leading to Josef Bursik to dub him an "absolute tank".

“Easy, Marc Guehi. He's an absolute tank," Bursik said when asked to pick the strongest player in the England U21s squad.

Capable of playing on either side of central defence, the Crystal Palace captain is believed to be available for £55m this summer, which would be a new record sale for Palace, surpassing the £50m they raked in for Aaron Wan-Bissaka when he joined Manchester United.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are already plotting his replacements with reports he is expected to move, lending credit to the idea that he will join a huge club this summer. With Arsenal having been linked with a move in the past, could this be the summer that they finally make their move?
