Arda Guler to Tottenham update as Daniel Levy plots Real Madrid transfer

In what was a relatively quiet January transfer window in the Premier League, Ange Postecoglou and Spurs remained active.

Pushing for a return to the Champions League, the Lilywhites signed Timo Werner from RB Leipzig on an initial loan, but Spurs' entire outlay went on centre-back Radu Dragusin, who joined from Genoa and was the most expensive addition of the window.

Already, though, Daniel Levy is hard at work on plans for the summer, and Spurs are reportedly eyeing an ambitious swoop for a player who only joined Real Madrid in 2023.

Spurs keen on Guler deal

According to reports in Spain, Spurs are showing "a firm interest" in signing Arda Guler from Real Madrid. Alongside Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, they are the "main candidates" to land him, be it on loan or on a permanent deal.

Spurs have built a "strong relationship" with the player's camp, which could be key, and there's a feeling that Guler may be bumped down the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu by the new faces that arrive in the off-season.

Real unlikely to give up "diamond" Guler permanently

Real paid €20m (about £17m) to sign Guler from Fenerbahce during last summer's transfer window after a hotly-contested transfer race that also featured Manchester City, PSG and, above all, El Clasico rivals Barcelona.

However, he's only been able to play 89 minutes for Los Blancos this season, having been out until November through injury. He's made four appearances in all competitions so far, two in La Liga (substitute outings against Las Palmas in late January and against Girona last weekend). Carlo Ancelotti gave him his full debut away to fourth-tier Arandina in the Copa del Rey shortly after the turn of the year, and he then featured in the Supercopa de Espana semifinal against Atletico.

Guler has been named in the matchday squad for all 10 games this year, so it could be unlikely for Real to consider letting him go permanently at this stage after fighting so hard to sign him. A loan move, however, could suit all parties.

Last season at Fenerbahce, Guler scored or assisted 13 goals in 35 appearances as a 17-year-old, averaging a direct involvement every 119 minutes. He's already earned four caps for the Turkish national team and opened his account with a stunning goal in a 2-0 win over Wales last June, becoming the fourth-youngest scorer in the country's history.

Dubbed a "diamond" by team-mate Joselu, he was nominated for Globe Soccer's Emerging Player award in 2023 alongside some of the best young talents in the game, and he also made the final 25-man shortlist Golden Boy prize. West Ham make new loan bid for "clinical" striker as Fulham hijack deal

West Ham have pulled off one deal so far in the January transfer window, signing midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City until the end of the season. However, that wasn't all that David Moyes wanted to do at the start of the month.

The Scotsman also wanted to recruit a new striker, with the position described as a "priority" in the latter part of that year, but despite an injury setback for Michail Antonio that will keep the frontman out until the middle of next month, there hasn't been any movement so far.

One potential candidate for the Irons is Armando Broja, a player who's long been admired at the London Stadium. His future was expected to be one of the big stories of the window's final phase, and that's proving to be the case on deadline day.

West Ham make final bid for Broja

According to journalist Dean Jones, West Ham have been offered the chance to sign Broja on loan on Thursday, as have fellow Premier League suitors Fulham and Wolves, with all three teams making a new bid.

In an attached article for SportsLens, he adds that Chelsea had been insistent on a loan deal followed by a £35m obligation to buy, but their stance has now changed at the last minute, and they got in touch with the trio of clubs to ask whether they'd be interested in a straight loan instead.

However, Fulham have now won the race, securing a deal with a £4m loan fee, meaning both Wolves and the Hammers' offers have been rejected.

"Clinical" Broja could have been Lingard 2.0

Broja really made a name for himself during a loan spell at Southampton in the 2021/22 season, when he scored six Premier League goals and earned praise from the competition's all-time top scorer in Alan Shearer. “Let me tell you, this lad is clinical,” he said. “His goal against Brentford made him the youngest player in Premier League history to score in each of his first four home starts."

The last time West Ham signed an attacker on loan from one of the 'big six' in January, it was a resounding success as Manchester United's Jesse Lingard lit up the league. Lingard would score nine goals and set-up five more in 16 appearances, and win the Premier League's Player of the Month award for April too. If West Ham want a new striker now though, we're really getting into the panic stations stage of the window.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Ronaldo hasn't had the best of Euros so far as he has failed to live up to the billing for Portugal while the team has performed consistently around him. However, when the five-time Ballon d'Or winner had the chance to open his Euro 2024 goalscoring account after racing through one-on-one with Turkey goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, he decided to set up Bruno Fernandes for the easiest goal of his life. Portugal boss Martinez has heaped praise on Ronaldo for his unselfish act, and also claimed that the rare moment should be shown around the world to upcoming footballers.

"To have him, an out-and-out goal scorer, pass the ball for the assist. It was a pure moment of Portuguese football that should be shown in every academy in world football.

"It showed that the team is the most important thing, that it means more than scoring any goal."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo holds the record for the most shots taken (9) in the current edition of the Euros so far. However, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker has failed to score and he will wait for his moment as he looks to lead Portugal to their second European Championship victory.

Bangladesh win Women's T20 World Cup Qualifier title

Asia Cup champions Bangladesh women won their second title in as many years by beating Thailand women in the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifer in Dundee on Saturday. A valiant and unbeaten opening effort of 71 off 60 balls from Sanjida Islam and two wickets each from spinners Nahida Akter and Shaila Sharmin highlighted their 70-run win as they defended 130.As both teams had already qualified for the Women’s T20 World Cup to be played in Australia next year, Bangladesh’s win on Saturday put them in Group A (Australia, India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka) whereas Thailand head to Group B (England, South Africa, West Indies and Pakistan).”We are very happy to be heading to Australia for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in February. Being at the world stage helps us grow the women’s game back home in Bangladesh. We hope they can watch and be inspired to play,” Bangladesh captain Salma Khatun said. The Bangladesh openers made full use of their decision to bat with a partnership of 68 in 10 overs before Murshida Khatun was bowled by legspinner Suleeporn Laomi for 33 off 34 balls. Sanjida hardly got anymore support from the rest of the line-up but her maiden T20I fifty carried Bangladesh all the way till the end as she struck six fours and three sixes in all. No other Bangladesh batsman scored in double digits as Jahanara Alam was run out for 3 and Fahima Khatun was stumped on her first ball which was a wide.Thailand stuttered in their chase early by starting slow and losing three wickets in the first six overs. Their top four fell for single-digit scores, totalling 14 runs in all, as Nahida dismissed the openers in her first two overs. They couldn’t put on any substantial partnership until Wongpaka Liengprasert and captain Sornnarin Tippoch (8) came together for 24 runs for the fifth wicket. Tippoch was soon caught on the legside off Sharmin, leaving Thailand with a tall task of scoring 90 runs in the last five overs. Liengprasert was boweld by Sharmin for 11 off 29 in the 16th over and Ratanaporn Padunglerd’s unbeaten 15 off 14 with a four and a six only reduced Thailand’s margin of defeat.

Newcastle most advanced club to hijack "world class" Bayern Munich target

Newcastle United are the most advanced party in the race for a "world class" Serie A player this summer, according to Italian journalist Eleonora Trotta.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have been linked with plenty of players since the January transfer window closed, as they look to strengthen their squad at the end of the season following a quiet winter window.

Barcelona defender Jules Kounde is one individual who has emerged as a possible target for Newcastle, as Eddie Howe contemplates adding to a back-line that has a number of ageing players, including Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn. The France international is capable of thriving at centre-back and right-back.

jules-kounde-liverpool-transfer-joe-gomez-premier-league

A move for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Exequiel Palacios has also been mooted, and Adrien Rabiot is also reportedly being looked at as an option in the middle of the park, with the Frenchman out of contract at Juventus this summer.

Everton youngster James Garner is also thought to be a target for Newcastle ahead of the summer window, and the former Manchester United ace is admired by Roy Keane, which is no mean feat.

In terms of a more attacking option, Emile Smith Rowe is seen as an alternative to Aston Villa star Jacob Ramsey, with the former struggling to nail down a regular starting berth for Arsenal this season, and potentially eyeing a new challenge.

Federico Chiesa transfer update

Speaking to TV Play [via Sport Witness] Trotta claimed that Newcastle are the top option for Chiesa alongside Bayern Munich, should the Italian decide to leave Juventus.

Chiesa could be a fantastic signing by Newcastle this summer, possessing so much pedigree when it comes to being an elite wide player in the modern game. The winger was superb at Euro 2020, winning the competition with Italy and scoring twice, while Alessandro Pierini has sung his praises: "He’s world- lass. He has all the ability and desire of a great player. If he improves then he’ll be even better than his father [Enrico]. I have loads of respect for Enrico and all he has done to help Federico come on as a player until now.”

Newcastle back in for "aggressive" defender ahead of summer transfer

The Magpies could finally get their man.

ByTom Cunningham Feb 23, 2024

At 26, Chiesa is in and around the peak of his powers, and that shouldn't change for the foreseeable future, and he could add so much firepower to Newcastle's attack, having racked up 50 goal contributions (28 goals and 22 assists) in 115 appearances for Juve.

Lange making early moves to sign £148,000-per-week star for Tottenham

Tottenham, lead by technical director Johan Lange, are thought to be moving "early" for a £148,000-per-week star this summer.

Spurs eyeing Conor Gallagher and other midfielders

Spurs have been tipped with interest in a host of fresh faces later this year, as the club seek to back manager Ange Postecoglou.

The Lilywhites could be set for a double swoop.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 1, 2024

The Lilywhites now want a star winger as one of their major signings for 2024, according to reliable journalist Miguel Delaney, but reports also surround the possible addition of a new central midfield player.

Chelsea star Conor Gallagher is a name who's been continuously mentioned as a target for Tottenham, with Matt Law of The Telegraph recently writing that they will make a "firm move" for the 24-year-old if he doesn't extend his Chelsea stay.

In the event Gallagher puts pen to paper on a new deal, though, it is believed they have alternative options in their thinking. Reporter Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport recently, suggested Everton's James Garner may well be one of them.

"Garner is probably a Gallagher alternative that Tottenham might look at," said Jones. Obviously, it's very early days to be analysing the summer transfer window. We know that Tottenham are still waiting to see if Conor Gallagher does become available because there is a feeling still that he might and the longer that contract situation goes on, the longer they will believe that something might be able to happen.

"But if Conor Gallagher does end up signing a contract extension, they need to have a list of names they immediately turn to. And I guess James Garner kind of fits the profile somewhat so yeah, an interesting one to look out for."

Another high-profile name to be linked is Juventus star Adrien Rabiot, with the Frenchman's contract expiring this summer.

Tottenham moving "early" for Rabiot

Italian newspaper Correire dello Sport, via Sport Witness, have an update this week. They claim Tottenham are moving "early" to sign Rabiot given his potential free agent status and are "testing the waters", alongside other interested sides. The £148,000-per-week star has made 22 Serie A appearances for Juve this season, scoring four goals and assisting three others.

Rabiot won plenty of major honours during his time at PSG as well, with the decorated midfielder also playing a key role in France's run to the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.

Former Juventus striker and fellow Frenchman David Trezeguet, commenting on Rabiot's ability, has branded the 28-year-old "world-class".

'We felt a bit like we got the Ashes stolen' – Justin Langer

Langer admits past week has been one of the most challenging of his coaching career

Daniel Brettig in Manchester02-Sep-2019″The art of competing, I’d learned from track, was the art of forgetting, and I now reminded myself of that fact. You must forget your limits. You must forget your doubts, your pain, your past.”Adam Gilchrist once penned a book called Walking To Victory. For Justin Langer, a more appropriate title might be Reading For Victory. Like a bowerbird, he pulls quotes, observations and stories from all over sport, business and life to inform his coaching of the Australian team and to provide him with examples and experiences to throw at his players. One of his recent reads has been Shoe Dog, the memoir of Nike’s founder Phil Knight, and the above line can be found within its pages.Knight’s story, while ending with Nike’s domination of the global market for sporting footwear, includes plenty of failures, wrong turns and false dawns. It goes a long way toward demonstrating that even the most successful individuals or organisations tend to fail a lot more often than they succeed, even if the ultimate success may be larger than the many individual failures that led to it. In his assessment of Shoe Dog, Bill Gates lauded it for uncovering the non-linear nature of long-term success.Gates wrote that the memoir is “a refreshingly honest reminder of what the path to business success really looks like. It’s a messy, perilous, and chaotic journey riddled with mistakes, endless struggles, and sacrifice. In fact, the only thing that seems inevitable in page after page of Knight’s story is that his company will end in failure”.Being able to face the knockdowns and defeats then continue forging on towards the final goal is a pretty relevant message for Langer and Australia this week, having lived through the trauma of Headingley. For all but the final hour of the Leeds Test, the tourists were set to record a famous victory of their own, claiming the Ashes without the services of their best batsman Steven Smith. The intervention of Ben Stokes, the staunch support of Jack Leach, and a good degree of tightening up by the Australians added up to a memorable finish but also a sequence that left Langer and his team feeling not just pained, but ill.As Langer reflected, this was all the harder to take for the fact that Australia’s preparation for this Ashes campaign, over a period of several years since their failure to retain the urn here in 2015, has been rigorous, attentive to the lessons of the past and with very little expense spared. The return of Steve Waugh for the final two Tests of this series, having originally been slated only to be working with the team for Edgbaston and Lord’s, is yet another example, but there are others like the use of Dukes balls in the Sheffield Shield and the Australia A tour run parallel to the World Cup.Justin Langer outside the Australian team hotel•PA Images via Getty ImagesThere has been tactical and cultural humility, too, dovetailing a more considered approach to playing English conditions – shut down the scoreboard in the field, leave the ball diligently with the bat – with the wider change in attitude and outlook charted by Cricket Australia in the wake of last year’s Newlands scandal. Knowing all these details intimately, and having taken such a major role in their planning and execution, it is little wonder Langer was close to bereft at the moment Stokes carved Pat Cummins through the covers to level the series at 1-1.”The main challenge, the biggest one, is that you know how much work’s gone into winning this Ashes series,” Langer said. “It’s been huge, from the preparation, the Australia A stuff, the selections, everything that’s gone into it, and it was that close, we were that close. That’s the toughest part of it, we were that close, and we let an opportunity slip. Therefore, when you let an opportunity slip you can dwell on it or you can use it as fire to make sure it doesn’t slip next time.”Everyone in that change room, probably a lot of Australians felt it, but felt completely sick after that. I actually felt physically sick after it, and then I went back to my room, I wasn’t sure whether to cry my eyes out or smash my hotel room. For most people it’s just a game of cricket, but when so much goes into it, it means a lot. You do take it personally because I know how much work’s going into it.”That was the biggest part of losing last week, that we felt we were so close and we let it slip. You never like to let opportunities slip in your life. That’s ok, we’ll make sure we learn from it, we’ll learn a lot of lessons from that, short term and long term, and hopefully we can do it better next time.”Justin Langer at a fielding session•PA Images via Getty ImagesHow Australia do it better is a fairly straightforward question. They need more runs – Langer pointed to the fact that Australia seldom lose a Test match when they score more than 300 in their first innings – and a tad more composure with the ball at vital times They must also remember their strengths, whether it be greatly improved catching at Headingley, or Nathan Lyon’s strong record of creating chances when bowling to Stokes, even if none were able to be turned into victory in the third Test.”It was a tight game alright and we’d rather be on the other side of it,” Langer said. “For most of the game we played pretty good cricket. Still have to bat better, we haven’t got 300 in the first innings yet. Every time we’ve got 300 we’ve at the very least won the Test match in the first innings over the last 20 Test matches. It’s a huge focus batting well in the first innings.”The last week of coaching has probably been one of the most challenging weeks of my coaching career after what happened at Leeds. That said, as challenging as it has been, it’s been awesome. I’ve loved this last week of coaching, because you can sit back and feel sorry for yourself or put it under the carpet or you can work out ways to make sure we are up for the first ball of the next Test match.”Asked about those many written and verbal lessons about coping with failure, in the context of this Ashes series, Langer returned to another of his stories: that of how, as a child, Muhammad Ali had his bike stolen and used the pain of the experience to help fuel his legendary boxing career. Forgetting is vital to an athlete’s mindset, but so too, at times, is remembering.”The champions all have had times of adversity. Whether it’s in business, sport or life,” Langer said. “The ones who come back from it – think about Muhammad Ali getting his bike stolen.”We felt a bit like we got the Ashes stolen the other day. And to England’s great credit, that’s what they did. They won that Test match , so we felt a bit like it’d been stolen from us. Now we’ve got to work out what we’re going to do, and use that as fire.”We’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves and let it slip. The great players and great teams – in business and life – they have their ups and downs but they always fight back from it. You wouldn’t see one champion player, one champion team, one champion business that hasn’t done that.”Vital, too, will be a sense of equilibrium and peace about the results to follow. Having done all the work, the preparation and tried to choose the right teams for Old Trafford and The Oval, Langer and his team will also have to let things go, and acknowledge that days like Stokes’ at Headingley can happen in sport. As Knight put it: “Hard work is critical, a good team is essential, brains and determination are invaluable, but luck may decide the outcome.”

PunjabFast bowler Barinder Sran has finalised his transfer to Chandigarh after being left out of his home state Punjab’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad. He obtained a no-objection certificate from Punjab on Thursday, saying he was not informed by the Punjab selectors why he was left out, and that he did not want to “waste the entire season” by not playing.”They didn’t even give me a valid reason [for dropping me],” Sran told the . “At least I deserved to know the reason why I was dropped. The selectors stopped taking my phone calls. I had no other option. I can’t waste my entire season. So, I decided to make a move and have no regrets.”The 26-year old, who has played six ODIs and two T20Is for India, made his debut for Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy in 2011. “I want to play for India again, but for that, I need to play. I am being let down by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). But it is a thing of the past. I am fit now and it’s time to look ahead.”In the Vijay Hazare Trophy last year, he bagged three wickets in as many games for Punjab despite going wicketless in two of them. The "highly-rated" Rangers academy grad who could replace John Lundstram

Glasgow Rangers’ treble ambitions are safe for another week as they secured passage into the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup over the weekend.

A trip to Easter Road to play Hibs is never easy at the best of times, but sandwiched in between a Europa League last-16 clash against Benfica, the match took on an even greater magnitude.

Much to their surprise, Philippe Clement kept the same starting XI for the cup clash that looked dead on their feet just a few days prior, but it worked a treat as they went into the half-time interval a goal to the good courtesy of John Lundstram.

While Hibs lost their discipline, Rangers kept their calm heads and Fabio Silva netted the clincher against the nine men and a 2-0 win was confirmed.

It was a professional performance by the Light Blues and, once again, John Lundstram was at the heart of everything good during the clash.

John Lundstram vs Hibernian in numbers

Towards the end of the Benfica tie, Lundstram had run himself into the ground, and it looked as though a well-deserved rest against Hibs would be the wisest thing for Clement to do.

No chance. Lundstram started in the capital and delivered a man-of-the-match performance, which included scoring the opening goal.

The midfielder was a calming presence in the heart of the midfield, looking like he had enjoyed a week between matches rather than the knackered figure during the closing stages of the tie in midweek.

There is no doubt he has been one of the most consistent performers during Clement’s reign thus far, missing only one match since mid-October. Two goals and six assists during 2023/24 have proven that he does like to get forward from time to time, but his ability to protect the defence and dictate the play from the middle of the pitch is perhaps his greatest strength.

John Lundstram for Rangers.

There is no time for respite, however, as the former Sheffield United gem will have to be prepared to take on Benfica at Ibrox on Thursday as the last eight of the Europa League awaits the winners.

When Lundstram could leave Rangers

A year ago, not many people would have predicted Lundstram being one of the most important players in the squad, but here we are.

Entering the 2023/24 campaign, the 30-year-old had a year left on his current contract, and it looked like his chances of an extension were slim.

Jack Butland

Fast-forward a few months, however, and it is clear he will be offered a new deal. The question is, when will he sign it? Clement has gone for a youth-based approach in the transfer market, yet keeping several experienced heads at the club, at least for the next couple of seasons, could be vital.

While Lundstram may not have too long left at the very top, he still has plenty to give and his knowledge and experience could be passed down to the youngsters emerging through the youth academy.

Lundstram's academy heir at Ibrox

Cole McKinnon is arguably one of the brightest talents in the B team, and he could well become the heir apparent to the English midfielder in the coming years.

In the final Premiership match of the 2021/22 campaign, Giovanni van Bronckhorst rested a host of first-team players for the forthcoming Europa League final, giving chances to various academy talents in the clash against Hearts.

McKinnon came off the bench with just 30 minutes left and did not take long to announce his arrival, scoring the third goal which clinched a 3-1 win and his talent looked promising indeed.

The youngster was sent on a season-long loan to Partick Thistle, who were playing in the second tier, for the 2022/23 term and this experience of regular first-team football at a competitive level has clearly benefitted him.

Throughout that campaign, the 21-year-old made 31 appearances for the Jags, contributing three goals and three assists in the process as the club came so close to securing promotion to the top flight.

Michael Beale named him part of the matchday squad on numerous occasions during the early part of the season, but he failed to make it onto the pitch.

Under Clement, however, it looks as though he has the perfect manager to play under, as the Belgian has given him a couple of opportunities of late in the senior squad.

Cole McKinnon's stats vs Benfica and Hibs

The midfielder was hailed by Jordan Campbell prior to joining Partick Thistle last season, saying: “The 19-year-old is highly rated at Ibrox and scored in the final league game of last season. Goes box-to-box and has a knack of getting a goal.”

Evidently like Lundstram, the Scot bursts forward in the hopes of joining the attack, but he can also perform in a slightly deeper role if required and this flexibility will be a bonus to Clement.

John Lundstram for Rangers.

He came off the bench for the final 13 minutes of the tie against Benfica last week and did not let the occasion get to him.

Indeed, he won 100% of his aerial duels while making an interception and blocking a shot, proving that he has the required mentality to come into a game which is hanging in the balance and keep a calm head.

He was then rewarded with another ten-minute cameo against Hibs, and he was solid again. This could give Clement another option at the heart of the midfield, especially with the games coming thick and fast in the coming weeks.

McKinnon is finally seeing the rewards of all his hard work in the B team recently, and it should serve as a reminder that the chances are there for the youngsters, especially if they are committed and work hard.

Lundstram may have another couple of years at the highest level in the game, but if McKinnon can keep gaining important minutes here and there, the 21-year-old could become an ideal replacement for the Englishman and save Clement millions in the transfer market in the process.
