Fornals benched in 4 changes for West Ham’s predicted lineup vs Bristol

West Ham United enjoyed a fantastic festive period in the Premier League with some notable wins over Manchester United and Arsenal to help give the Irons faithful something to celebrate as they bid farewell to one of the best years in the club's history.

David Moyes will be hoping that his side can start 2024 like they ended 2023, with a win, and in the process booking their place in the next round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

However, to do that, they will have to avoid an upset against Championship side Bristol City, who will be looking to bounce back after they lost 1-0 to Millwall on New Year's Day.

With Championship opposition comes the possibility of rotating the squad, although with no other game until the 21st of January, Moyes won't want to make too many unforced changes.

That said, he's likely to make four changes to his starting XI from the recent stalemate with Brighton and Hove Albion, especially with a few injuries and absences caused by the Africa Cup of Nations.

1

GK – Łukasz Fabiański

Fabianski celebrates Conference League title with West Ham

The first change comes between the sticks, where Alphonse Areola makes way for FA Cup winner and cup keeper, Łukasz Fabiański.

The Polish shot-stopper has already won this competition, starting for Arsenal when they beat Hull City 3-2 to claim the title in 2014.

Fabiański was also excellent for the Irons when he took over from Areola for a few weeks following the Frenchman's wrist injury.

2

RB – Vladimír Coufal

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal.

Right-back brings another change, as Vladimir Coufal comes in to take his position back from Ben Johnson, although the young Englishman still features in this XI.

Coufal has been ever present in the Irons' defence this season, starting 95% of the side's Premier League matches and only missing the game against Brighton due to the Flu.

3

CB – Konstantinos Mavropanos

Keeping his place at right centre-back is the Greek titan, Konstantinos Mavropanos.

The former Arsenal defender started against the Seagulls last week due to Kurt Zouma suffering a knee injury, and with the Frenchman still sidelined, Mavropanos looks set to start.

4

CB – Angelo Ogbonna

West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna.

Also keeping his place at the heart of the defence is former Juventus centre-back, Angelo Ogbonna.

The Italian started in place of a sick Nayef Aguerd against Arsenal last month, and now that the Moroccan has left for AFCON, Ogbonna looks set to keep his place.

5

LB – Ben Johnson

West Ham defender Ben Johnson.

Johnson keeps his place in the starting XI for Sunday, but he doesn't maintain his position.

With Coufal returning to the side, the Englishman will move out to the left side of defence and replace Emerson Palmieri.

The Italian-Brazilian full-back has been fantastic for the Hammers this season, but with the level of the opposition being what it is on the weekend, Moyes has the chance to rest one of his most important players while giving some more minutes to a squad player.

It's a win-win.

6

DM – Edson Alvarez

Edson Alvarez.

The first of the holding midfielders is former Ajax star Edson Alvarez.

The Mexican international was once again given the nod against Brighton, and with him starting 80% of the side's Premier League games, it seems almost guaranteed that he will start against Bristol.

7

DM – Tomas Soucek

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek

The man starting next to Alvarez is another ever-present member of the team, Czech international Tomas Soucek.

The 28-year-old has started even more league games than his midfield partner – 90% – and is a vital cog in Moyes' machine, so he will start on Sunday.

8

RM – Jarrod Bowen

Jarrod Bowen West Ham

The right of midfield brings with it another positional switch, as Jarrod Bowen moves back out wide to be more heavily involved in a game that the Irons are expected to dominate.

The former Hull City star has arguably been the Irons' best player this season, with 11 goals and two assists to his name in just 19 Premier League starts.

If there is one player in particular that Bristol have to be concerned about, it's Bowen.

9

CAM – James Ward-Prowse

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse

Another player with a strong argument for being West Ham's most important this season is James Ward-Prowse, who keeps his place in the XI.

The former Southampton captain has started 100% of the club's Premier League games this season, scoring three goals and providing six assists along the way.

There might be some who argue that Moyes should perhaps rest a player who is clearly so pivotal to his system.

However, with just how important a good FA Cup run could be for this team, it doesn't quite seem worth the risk to leave him on the bench.

10

LM – Maxwel Cornet

West Ham United forward Maxwel Cornet.

With this being a third-round FA Cup tie against a Championship team, there will always be a few players on the periphery who are given a start, and this game will be no different, with Maxwel Cornet coming in for Saïd Benrahma.

The Ivorian winger has made just one league appearance for the Irons this season. Still, with Lucas Paqueta out injured and Mohammed Kudus at AFCON, it's the perfect time to give the former Burnley player a runout.

Described as "dangerous" by Ian Wright on Match of the Day, the 27-year-old must grab this opportunity with both hands if he wants more starts in the future.

Arsenal star who cost nothing is now worth more than Phil Foden

Arsenal are a team on the up at the moment; of that, there can be no doubt.

Gone are the days of finishing eighth in the Premier League and meekly rolling over when playing the rest of the Big Six.

The Gunners, under the management of Mikel Arteta, have reestablished themselves among the country's biggest clubs, and while they might still fall short of winning the league in the face of the Manchester City juggernaut, they will get close.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

This resurgence has been in large part thanks to some brilliant recruitment and the promotion of some incredibly talented youngsters, with one who, above all others, has come to symbolise this modern Arsenal side, a player who did not cost the club a penny and is now worth more than Phil Foden.

A diamond in the rough

A number of promising youth products have made the leap from Hale End to the first team in recent seasons, such as Eddie Nketiah, Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson, and even Ethan Nwaneri, who got the shortest of run-outs early on last season.

However, when it comes to a youngster emblematic of Arsenal's resurgence in recent years, there is only one man it can be: Bukayo Saka.

The charismatic and skillful Gunners gem burst onto the scene during Unai Emery's first season in charge, making his debut off the bench in a Europa League game away to Ukrainian side Vorskla Poltava, before making his first start against Qarabag FK a couple of weeks later.

He would be given his first run-out in the Premier League against Fulham in January of the same season, but with only seven minutes to play, he would have to wait another season for his full league debut.

That came against Aston Villa in September 2019, and while he was not able to score or assist in that game, he did set up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's equaliser at Old Trafford in the following match – talk about making a case for yourself.

It would be fair to describe Arsenal as an incredibly tumultuous place when the Hale End star was breaking through, with managerial changes, fan discontent, and a general feeling that the club was up a creek without a paddle.

This instability is best demonstrated by Saka being the only player still at the club who started against Villa in September 2019. Moreover, the only players on the bench who are still plying their trade in N5 are Reiss Nelson and Gabriel Martinelli.

Ultimately, it is rather surprising that the Ealing-born prospect even survived all the upheaval at the club, although he did more than just that; he thrived.

Saka's unstoppable rise

It was in the 2020/21 season that the Gunners' 'little chili' truly established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in the country, with Arteta now playing him more as a wide midfielder or winger instead of as a left-back he was able to impress fans and terrify defences with his quick feet and football IQ, which U23 scout Antonio Mango described as being at the "highest level".

In all, the "creative genius", as he was dubbed by Mango, has now played 209 games for the North Londoners, in which he has scored 49 goals and provided 53 assists, meaning he has averaged a goal involvement every 2.04 games since his debut at just 17 years old.

209

49

53

0.48

While a return like that is impressive just in and of itself, it is made even more impressive by the fact that he has played 21 games at left-back, and only played as an out-and-out winger for 87 games of his Arsenal career.

However, he has not just been a revelation for the Gunners. Alongside his exploits at club level, the "future icon", as he was dubbed by talent Scout Jacek Kulig, has been electric for the English national team, and has already become one of the most important players in the squad.

In his 32 senior caps, the 22-year-old has scored 11 goals and provided eight assists, meaning he is providing a goal involvement every 1.68 matches for the Three Lions, a truly remarkable record for someone so young, especially considering the plethora of wide talent that Gareth Southgate has to choose from.

However, it is not just the wide players that Saka is outperforming in the England set-up, it's everyone. The Gunners' wide wizard has been named England's Player of the Year for two years running now, beating out the likes of Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham to claim the prize.

Saka's current valuation

So, with such a meteoric rise – one that is showing no signs of slowing down – just how much money is the Hale End graduate worth in today's market?

Well, according to the CIES Football Observatory, the young Englishman is currently worth a whopping €200m, which works out at around £171m.

johan-bakayoko-bukayo-saka-tottenham-opinion

Now, realistically, the Gunners will not be selling their 'starboy' anytime soon, and you can imagine that the fans would rather see mant other players in the squad leave before the academy graduate departs.

However, it shows that clubs can make much more money by developing and nurturing their stars, as any potential sale is registered as all profit under the current rules, given that he joined the academy for nothing.

One of Saka's contemporaries, and another Premier League prodigy, is Manchester City's Phil Foden, due to his age, position, and importance to the national side.

However, according to CIES, the City gem is worth a fair bit less than his title challenger, coming in at a valuation of €150m, or about £128m.

The Stockpot-born dynamo has scored 74 goals and provided 50 assists in 251 games, meaning he has averaged 0.49 goal involvements per match since making his debut for the treble winners.

Arsenal could've supercharged title push by signing "monster" Jesus upgrade

The Brazilian has been a valuable signing, but his lack of cutting edge could cost the Gunners.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Feb 8, 2024

While their personal statistics are incredibly similar, their different valuations show how important Saka is to Arsenal, whilst Foden has a way to go before he gets there within the City squad.

Ultimately, both youngsters are uber-talented and look destined to dominate the game for the next decade-plus. Still, Arsenal's academy superstar has already taken so much responsibility upon his shoulders, so it does make sense to see him valued slightly higher in today's market.

Arsenal and Arteta have hit the jackpot with Saka, and they will be hoping that the next academy graduate to become a superstar is just around the corner.

Spurs could sign their new Maddison after Alasdair Gold reveal

Tottenham Hotspur drew at Old Trafford in the Premier League last weekend but it will have been most pleasing for Ange Postecoglou that his outfit, hindered by numerous injuries, looked the better of the two teams.

Fifth-placed in the division after 21 fixtures, Spurs have rediscovered their identity under the Australian's guidance and have put the malaise of the 2022/23 term to bed.

Frankly, the major sticking point of the current campaign has been the lack of depth, inflamed by those injury problems over the past few months, but with January bids already tied up for Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner, Spurs are now in a good position.

That's not to say Postecoglou won't strike again this month, however…

Spurs' winter transfer targets

Spurs have signed a centre-back and a versatile forward, known to be two priority areas for the club, but have yet to sign a centre-midfielder, with England internationals Conor Gallagher and Kalvin Phillips both linked.

Both prospective deals have their sticking points, however, and it might be that Postecoglou waits until the summer to strengthen his side's engine room with the right player, instead making a move of a shrewder nature this month.

Conor Gallagher for Chelsea

Indeed, according to football.london's Alasdair Gold, Tottenham are interested in Norwich City's rising star Jonathan Rowe, with the 20-year-old being monitored by multiple Premier League clubs – it's stressed that an official move has not been made.

He noted: "Tottenham are among the Premier League clubs to have shown an interest in Norwich's talented winger Jonathan Rowe, but at this moment have not made a move for the versatile 20-year-old."

How Jonathan Rowe would fit in at Spurs

Last season, a teenage Rowe was but a prospect on the fringe of the Canaries' unsuccessful push for promotion from the Championship, making three substitute appearances at the end of the campaign.

Something clicked in pre-season and the young winger has made the most emphatic of introductions to life on the major stage, with the noteworthy return of 12 goals and three assists from 28 appearances across all competitions.

In the Championship, as per Sofascore, Rowe has complemented his 13 direct goal contributions across 23 starting appearances with 1.0 key passes, 1.3 tackles and 3.1 ball recoveries per game, earning praise for his "scintillating form" by pundit Carlton Palmer.

Tottenham would wield a dynamic and versatile new winger by sealing this starlet's signature, one who could add something new to the frontline, ranking among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across divisions similar to the Championship over the past year for goals, the top 13% for tackles and the top 20% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref.

With such exciting natural talent, Spurs could sign their next James Maddison by completing a swoop for Rowe, with the England international also emerging from his footballing infancy with the Canaries before transferring to Leicester City for a fee rising to £22m in 2018.

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison.

Now 27 years old and considered one "of the best players of the season" by The Times' Henry Winter, Maddison ranks among the top 5% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists and progressive passes and the top 2% for shot-creating actions per 90.

The 5 foot 8 Rowe – dubbed a "real talent" by one voice on the Pink Un Podcast – is an attacking outlet of a more direct nature but that is not to say that he can't bloom into a force just like the Spurs playmaking machine.

If a deal is feasible and affordable to complete this month, Tottenham must take advantage of Rowe's blistering start to life, adding him to the ranks and nurturing him to the fore.

Leeds racing to sign "fantastic" defender who’s better than Godfrey

Leeds United are reportedly battling it out with a Premier League side to secure the signing of a centre-back to bolster Daniel Farke's squad on deadline day.

Latest Leeds transfer news

The Whites have agreed a deal to sign Connor Roberts on loan from Burnley and they are now turning their attention to the heart of their defence.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon account, the Yorkshire-based side are in a last-ditch battle with Sheffield United to sign Joe Worrall from Nottingham Forest.

The report claims, however, that the Blades may not be able to sign the defender on loan as they are also close to signing Mason Holgate on a temporary basis from Everton.

This would clear the path for the Whites to land the Tricky Trees skipper on loan, after Nuno Espirito Santo's side decided to drop their desire to sell him for £6m on a permanent deal this window.

Leeds reportedly had an offer rejected for Ben Godfrey towards the end of last month and Worrall would be a better option than the Toffees defender.

Ben Godfrey's form for Everton

The 26-year-old enforcer has only played three times in the Premier League this season but did start ten times for them during the 2022/23 campaign.

In that time, Godfrey lost 54% of his duels and made 2.1 tackles and interceptions combined per match in 13 top-flight outings to go along with a dreadful pass completion rate of 66%.

Former Norwich defender Ben Godfrey.

His last experience of regular Championship football came under Farke at Norwich in the 2018/19 season. The one-time England international made 31 appearances and caught the eye with 1.8 tackles and interceptions combined per game, and a pass success rate of 90%.

He also ranked within the top 21% of centre-backs within the division for progressive passes (3.35) per 90, which speaks to his forward-thinking play in possession.

The stats that show why Worrall is better than Godfrey

Worrall, however, has shown himself to be a better player than Godfrey at both Premier League and Championship level in recent seasons for Forest.

Appearances

30

Interceptions per game

0.9

Tackles per game

1.8

Duel success rate

61%

Pass accuracy

79%

As you can see in the table above, the £50k-per-week titan offered far more to Forest than his compatriot did for Everton in the top-flight last term, with a significantly better contribution in terms of his pass success rate and how often he won 50/50 duels against attackers.

Worrall's form in the Championship for the Tricky Trees during the 2021/22 promotion-winning campaign also suggests that he has more to offer than Godfrey at that level.

The 27-year-old ace, who BBC Radio's Colin Fray once hailed as "fantastic", ranked within the top 9% of centre-backs for progressive passes (4.56) per 90, which suggests that he could progress play more frequently than the Everton outcast each match.

Worrall also won 63% of his duels and made 3.7 tackles and interceptions combined per match across 39 outings that term as his side went up through the play-offs.

Therefore, the formerly £6m-rated machine would be a better signing than Godfrey due to his superior qualities on and off the ball, which is why this could be a fantastic late addition for the club on deadline day.

– Araos, que teve 100% dos seus direitos comprados pela quantia de R$ 23,9 mi, não 20%, como registrado originalmente;

– Cantillo, que custou R$ 10,5 mi por 70% do passe, diferentemente da integralidade, como inicialmente divulgado;

Aston Villa identify Matty Cash replacement as transfer contact revealed

Aston Villa are keeping tabs on a Serie A sensation after having a January bid knocked back, according to reports coming out of Italy, as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his squad further after an electric campaign so far.

Impressive Emery eyeing European success

It appeared a major coup when Aston Villa announced the capture of veteran trophy winner Unai Emery last season, and so it has proved. The former Arsenal, Paris Saint Germain and Villareal boss has overseen a massive upturn in the fortunes of the Villa Park outfit since his arrival, with the club currently sitting fourth in the Premier League and just five points behind league leaders Liverpool.

Though they have won just one of their last five games and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Chelsea, the Villans remain in a fantastic position to make the campaign a memorable one, and end it with a European trophy in the form of the Europa Conference League.

To improve their chances of doing just that, the Midlands outfit were one of just nine Premier League clubs to make a permanent transfer in the January window, with the impressive Middlesbrough youngster Morgan Rodgers joining the club in a deal worth around £8m, rising to £15m. They also snapped up Arsenal youngster Lino Sousa, though the Brazilian fullback is not expected to feature heavily in the first team this season amid the impressive performances from Alex Moreno and the continued support of Lucas Digne.

Aston Villa now reach “agreement” over new deal for “scintillating” star

Villa are rewarding the player for the best form of his career in the Midlands.

ByDavid Comerford Feb 6, 2024 Villa approach for Serie A star rejected

Now, reports coming out of Italy suggest that Emery would have spent further had he got his way, with the Spanish coach keen on signing Torino's Raoul Bellanova in January. NSWE's approach was knocked back thanks to the €20m (£17m) asking price.

That has not ended the interest in the Italian though, with Tutto Mercato reporting that the Villans remain keen on a potential summer move for one of the Italian top flight's breakout stars. However, they will face plenty of competition for the 23-year-old, with several clubs thought to be keen on bolstering their ranks with the full-back.

Used as a wing-back for Torino, it is easy to see where he would fit into Unai Emery's system. After an excellent start to the season, Matty Cash appears to have fallen down the Spaniard's pecking order, which has forced him to use Ezri Konsa at full-back with John McGinn ahead of him.

matty-cash-aston-villa-injury-poland

Bellanova could operate in either of those positions, and would give Villa another option on the right hand side of the pitch. With three assists to his name this season, he is clearly capable of providing a killer ball when required.

Though the 23-year-old only made the switch to Turin in the summer, the Italians could already cash in on him should an offer come in, with a deal at the reported asking price turning quite a profit from the €7m (£6m) they spent last year.
