How Asif Ali's brief burst of power may change Pakistan selectors' mind

A late display of six-hitting carried Pakistan’s unlikely chase deep into the final overs, and may have forced a change to the World Cup 15

When Pakistan’s World Cup squad was announced, Mohammad Amir’s exclusion dominated the headlines. That was perfectly natural; the fascination with the possible revival of his prodigious teenage talent hasn’t yet died down, and the prospect of a World Cup in England where Pakistan had voluntarily left him out was perplexing to several. But if you looked past the flashiest headlines, the omission of Asif Ali came as a more surprising move. Not because his numbers are extraordinary; they’re not. An average of 31 is far from sensational, and the latest 36-ball 51 is his highest ODI score in nine innings, four of which came against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. It is instead his strike rate – 132.80 – that marks him out as the possessor of an ability no one in Pakistan’s middle order can claim to have. Asif is, with more sixes than fours in his short ODI career thus far, a power hitter. Fakhar Zaman aside, no other player in the preliminary World Cup squad has such qualities. It was a point Mickey Arthur echoed following Pakistan’s spirited attempt at chasing down England’s colossal first innings in Southampton. That Pakistan had got as close as they did was a tremendous surprise to anyone acquainted with their recent batting troubles, and Asif’s four sixes and two fours on his way to the half-century was a major factor in their fight. Without his efforts, this contest would have been a foregone conclusion well before Chris Woakes sent down the 50th over.”We batted well as a unit there, but fell just a little short at the end,” Arthur said afterwards. “Asif played really well off the back of that really good innings from Fakhar, who was outstanding today. It was disappointing not to get over the line.”Arthur made no attempt to conceal what that meant for Pakistan’s World Cup plans, and where the 27-year-old stands in regard to them. “Asif was very impressive today. It’s no secret the one thing we’ve lacked is a bit of power hitting and he has the ability to do that for us. He did his chances no harm with the innings he played.”The idea that Asif may not go to the World Cup looks even stranger once Pakistan turn to the other camp, where the approach and personnel of the hosts has made them the bookies’ favourites to walk away with the trophy. Joe Root aside, there’s barely a player in England’s top seven who wouldn’t count as a power-hitter – in any XI – and to overlook one of the few Pakistan can count among their ranks would lead to plenty of head-scratching.Sure, it poses a dilemma regarding the balance of the squad, and what it means vis-à-vis playing a sixth bowler. Attempts to fit Asif in at No. 6 in the Asia Cup last year didn’t work, but then again, nothing did for Pakistan at that tournament. This is a headache worth having, not one to be washed away by a bitter pill and a sip of water. How to squeeze him into the XI is a conversation for later, though, with the more pressing conundrum being who he would replace in the 15-man squad. His performance today means he’s unlikely to be rested for the game that follows, a game for which Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik – both in the squad as it stands – will be fit.It would be astonishing if either were dropped for the World Cup, and that puts more pressure on Haris Sohail’s shoulders than is perhaps justified. The left-hander couldn’t keep the momentum going when he came in with Fakhar and Babar Azam having departed in quick succession, scoring just 14 of the 41 runs in his partnership with Asif before holing out at deep point. However, his three overs of left-arm spin were more economical than any of those bowled by his team-mates.It might mean Pakistan take the easy way out and put him in at Abid Ali’s expense, a player who burst into the selectors’ plans off the back of a debut hundred in the fourth ODI against Australia in March. While not a like-for-like replacement, it resolves the apparent absurdity of omitting Asif while not foregoing the experience of Shoaib or the all-round skills of Hafeez, both of whom the selectors appear to set plenty of store by. But Abid’s own List A and T20 strike rate suggest he’s more than capable of keeping things moving, and to confuse the most harmonious call with the most discerning one could prove to be expensive folly.Make no mistake: on the evidence of what we saw at Ageas Bowl today and later heard from Arthur, Asif hasn’t gone to England just to play a bilateral series. And if that’s apparent from the outside, it’s a point that will have dawned equally gravely on the men who might be forced to make way for him. The pressure of facing England’s bowlers is considerable as it is, but some Pakistan batsman may have more than just that on their minds when the two sides square off at Bristol on Tuesday.

Aston Villa could land Petrov 2.0 in £25m target who’s a "bit like Lampard"

Despite being forced to settle for a point away at Goodison last weekend, surprise package Aston Villa remain firmly in the mix near the top of the table with over half of the Premier League season having played, with the Unai Emery revolution continuing in the Midlands.

Previously maligned amid a tough spell at Arsenal, the Spaniard has made a remarkable return to English football over the past year or so, with Villa not only threatening to secure a Champions League berth, but also still with an outside chance of landing the title.

As the recent goalless draw with Everton showcased, however, the Villans are far from the finished article, with Emery likely to be plotting to land quality reinforcements this month in order to maintain his side's impressive momentum.

Aston Villa's midfield search

One name that has been circulating in recent times is Celtic sensation, Matt O'Riley, with Sky Sports naming Villa among those to have kept a close eye on the Denmark international, amid significant interest from Serie A side, Inter Milan.

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

The London-born playmaker only made the move to Glasgow on a £1.5m deal two years ago from MK Dons, although the suggestion is that the Old Firm side could demand a fee above the £25m that they received from the sale of Jota to Saudi Arabian outfit, Al-Ittihad last summer.

While that would represent a vast profit for those at Parkhead, managing to snap up the 23-year-old for anywhere close to that fee would represent a real bargain for Emery and co.

Matt O'Riley's statistics at Celtic

It has been a perfect move, in truth, for both club and player over the last 24 months, with O'Riley helping the Hoops to a plethora of domestic honours, while also boosting his own status in the process – even earning a first senior cap for Denmark late last year.

Once of Fulham's academy, the midfield magician made the adaptation from life in England's EFL to the Scottish Premiership with relative ease, having now racked up 44 goals and assists in 100 games in all competitions for the club.

It is this season, in particular, that the £14k-per-week gem has particularly shone amid Brendan Rodgers' arrival in the dugout, bagging ten goals and ten assists across all fronts, including providing 17 goal involvements in just 21 league games.

Operating typically in an advanced midfield berth, O'Riley has even been described as a "wee bit like Frank Lampard" for his ability to arrive late into the box, as per pundit David Healy, with the ex-England international a real goalscoring machine during his days at Chelsea, in which he scored 211 goals from a midfield berth.

One man whom O'Riley will also be looking to emulate is a certain, Stiliyan Petrov, with the Bulgarian ace memorably trading Celtic for Villa back in 2006, after spending seven years north of the border in a glittering spell.

Despite seeing his career cruelly brought to a close in 2013 after being diagnosed with Leukaemia, the 44-year-old cemented himself as a firm fan favourite at Villa Park following his arrival from Scotland, memorably winning the club's Players' Player of the Year award and Supporters' Player of the Year award in 2008/09.

As his ex-teammate Gareth Barry stated in 2014, "Stan's strength was his composure on the ball, he never seemed to panic, always seemed to find the right pass", with that seemingly a trait shared by the elegant and silky O'Riley, who has earned praise from former Celtic boss, Gordan Strachan:

"Some of his passes have been phenomenal. He has the ability that all the top players have of remaining composed on the ball – he doesn’t play unlucky passes."

With Villa having reaped the rewards of prising Petrov from the Bhoys almost 18 years ago, the club could well repeat that transfer masterclass with the signing of another Celtic Park midfield sensation.

Short Trent Bridge boundary (and weather) on Ross Taylor's mind

It’s a well-known trope that English people always talk about the weather. But it dominated the discussion among Indians and New Zealanders ahead of what should be a highly-anticipated match between the only two undefeated sides remaining in the early stages of the World Cup.After being confined to the Trent Bridge indoor nets for two days, New Zealand are keeping their selection cards close to their chest, likely to be influenced by how many overs they think might be played on Thursday. Repeated visits to the forecasting websites suggest there is anything from a 20 to 80% chance of rain at different stages. Make of that what you will.”I said at the start of the tournament that luck is going to play a part,” Ross Taylor said, speaking before New Zealand’s final indoor training session. “With the weather, England is a beautiful place, but it’s not famous for good weather. In saying that, there’s still a long way to go in this tournament. I’m sure there’s going to be rained out games that could affect us along the way. We found that in Taunton, and there have been times where forecasts have been wrong as well. Hopefully, tomorrow is one.”Taylor is no stranger to Trent Bridge after spending the 2018 season playing for Nottinghamshire. Stints at Sussex, Durham and this year at Middlesex means he is more familiar with the conditions than most.”We had an outstanding summer last year, so there wasn’t a lot of rained out games,” Taylor said. “Traditionally, when you play here at county cricket, you play on either side. You don’t normally play on the middle [pitch], which is the same for internationals.”It [Trent Bridge] is a great place to play cricket. Traditionally, it can favour the batters at times, but I’m sure that bowlers will be going to have a little bit there. It [the pitch] has been under the covers for two or three days and hasn’t seen the sun.”While New Zealand have a fully fit squad to choose from, at least one change has been forced on India, with Shikhar Dhawan’s thumb injury keeping him out for at least two matches. That leaves India without a left-right combination at the top order. New Zealand, conversely, have a number of combinations upon which they could settle.Shikhar Dhawan having his left hand in a cast during a training session•Associated Press

“I haven’t been in the bowling meetings, but obviously Shikhar is a big loss to India,” Taylor said. “He plays very well at the ICC tournaments and has a very good record over here. He and Rohit Sharma have a very good partnership, and I think they complement each other well because they’re left and right-handed [batsmen respectively]. In terms of our line-up, I think we’ve had a similar balanced side for a long time, and when you do have a right-left hand combination, it does put pressure in different ways on the bowling opposition.ALSO READ: Pant to join Indian squad as cover for Dhawan“A lot of these grounds in the UK have a short boundary on one side, and if you’ve got two right-handers or two left-handers, you can’t exploit it as much, where obviously having the right- and left-hand [combination], and the communication becomes very important to target those short boundaries.”As we see, it’s traditionally a short boundary here. If that is the case, then hopefully we can exploit it with the right-left-hander [combination], as I’m sure India and other teams that are playing here will try and do that.”A fresh pitch is being used for this match, one that is closer to the midpoint between the two square boundaries than either of the two pitches that have been used so far in the tournament, although the Fox Road boundary (68 metres) is still shorter than the Bridgford Road boundary (74 metres). If the match is shortened and the T20 tactics come into play, Taylor believes the pressure could be on Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal to contain New Zealand’s power hitters.”We’ve faced India a lot in recent times and had some success against them,” Taylor said. “Obviously, two world-class spinners on their day… We’ll have to wait and see what the wicket produces tomorrow.”Some shorter boundaries, and sometimes that can play on the mind of the spinner, but as I said, with all the weather around and so much uncertainty, we’ll just have to wait and see. And I’m sure the team that adapts the best will probably get the right result.”

Arteta has earmarked the signing of club’s important defender for Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has personally earmarked the signing of one club's important defender as the club's transfer plans continue to take shape.

Arsenal given January transfer setbacks

It hasn't exactly been the dream transfer window for supporters thus far, as they've already been dealt a major roadblock in their pursuit of long-standing striker target Ivan Toney.

"Yes" – Fabrizio Romano shares the Arsenal signing which could well happen

The reliable transfer reporter has had his say on Arsenal’s January plans.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to the media this week, confirmed that Toney is set to stay at Brentford this season unless the Bees receive an incredible offer – despite months of the Englishman being repeatedly linked to joining Arsenal.

"The very short answer, yes," said Frank on whether Toney will stay.

"He is a Brentford player, he is here. Clearly we miss a few offensive players, I can’t see why we would sell him and I would love to have him for a longer time.

“If I ever, ever could recommend that, and it’s not for me to say yes or no, that’s Phil (Giles, director of football) or Matthew (Benham, owner), then it needs to be an unbelievable price. So he will stay here.”

According to reliable journalist Miguel Delaney of The Independent, Arsenal will be operating under strict FFP limitations as well, coming after they spent north of £200 million in the summer window.

Arteta, as per Delaney, would like two new full-backs, a midfielder and striker ideally – but the Spaniard may be forced to compromise on a few of those wishes for now.

However, that isn't to say Arsenal won't make any new signings, as Fabrizio Romano said he thinks the Gunners will make at least one.

Arteta plotting Fikayo Tomori move for Arsenal

Despite not being linked with many centre-backs, a report by Football Transfers has now claimed that Arsenal have their eyes on AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori.

It is believed Arteta has personally earmarked the signing of Tomori for Arsenal, who has been a crucial defender for Milan since joining the club permanently from Chelsea.

The Englishman, who has five caps for the Three Lions, played a big role for Milan on their journey to the Champions League semi-finals last season.

This term, Tomori has started 16 Serie A matches as a mainstay of Stefano Pioli's backline, with Milan and Italy legend Franco Baresi once praising the 26-year-old for his impressive attributes.

"He is young and has played well so far when he's had the chance," said Baresi on Tomori to The Mail in 2021.

"He is skilful and has great physical attributes. He is still adapting to the Italian league and I think he can only grow as a defender and help us out.

"He needs to be focused on the present and on doing well with AC Milan. The club will decide his future with the player and with Chelsea at the end of the season.

"There is great competition in England, but he is definitely one of the most promising prospects out there. His experience with AC Milan can certainly help him develop as a player."

Warner's hundred another stage of the homecoming

His hundred against Pakistan was recognition that his singular match-winning skills remain very much intact

Daniel Brettig14-Jun-2019When does a cricketer feel at home in a team? Some get that sense within the minutes of their first match for a side, others may go seasons without ever quite feeling a part of it, whatever their performances or how things look in all the on-field backslapping. The Australian team can be an unforgiving place. One former opening batsman confessed some years ago that when he was first called up, days went by before any other team-mate spoke to him by way of welcome. Another called a Cricket Australia official during an early spell in the team to say he was lonely away from home, and to ask for something to do.No-one, though, has quite had an experience quite like that of David Warner, banished from the Australia side in the wake of the Newlands scandal last year and, unlike the former captain Steven Smith, left very much isolated by his identification as the ringleader of the ball tampering plot, if not its subsequent cover-up.In those desperate hours and days following Warner’s ban, accompanied by a lifetime suspension from ever holding a formal leadership position in the team, he was seen to be at odds with the rest, even more so than Smith or Cameron Bancroft. There was, in the game’s highest circles, widespread acknowledgement that he may never be selected again. Warner, for his part, said as much in an otherwise legally constrained return home press conference at the SCG.A little more than a year on, it should be noted that the first leadership figure in Australian cricket to offer a more welcoming word to Warner was Justin Langer, when he was appointed national team coach in May 2018. While Langer was not without his own reservations, wanting to get a stronger sense of where Warner and the team were at before a lengthy reintegration process began, he offered far more carrot than stick to the ex-vice-captain.”He’s a really good young bloke and he made a mistake,” Langer said at the time. “I love the way he plays his cricket. The way he runs between the wickets, the way he fields, the way he bats – they’re things that for the less-trained eye, you might not respect as much.”So it was that Warner and Smith were reintegrated, by way of net sessions in Australia, a team visit in the UAE, a World Cup preparation camp in Brisbane, and innumerable phone calls, text exchanges and coffee catch-ups. Warner all the while kept a commendable silence, not seeking any platform for self-justification, and grinding out runs wherever he was permitted to play.Even so, his return to Australian ranks had been halting prior to the century against Pakistan that underlined his exceedingly rare ability, turning a bowler-friendly day into a head start of 146 without loss that was still standing when Australia finally secured victory in the Taunton twilight. A pair of scratchy innings against Afghanistan and India, either side of a brief one against the West Indies, suggested he was not yet at home. The hundred, Langer now reckons, will be remembered as the knock that sealed his return.”You can see in his eyes how determined he is to be back playing for Australia,” Langer said. “When you score a hundred, it is almost like there is no better feeling in the world. I listened to the press conference you had with him, he can only explain how he felt, but for us if you score a hundred it’s almost like, ‘righto, I am back, I am back’. And that’s a good thing.David Warner celebrates his hundred•Getty Images”That’s a nice feeling I am sure for him and it’s a nice feeling for us that you can score some runs. Hundreds, they are the milestone, they are the reward. In a lot of ways, that’s a really great reward for him.”Recognition, both for Warner and team-mates, that his singular match-winning skills remain very much intact, was distinct from regaining respect. This, Langer argued, had been generated long ago by the way Warner set about the time he had away from international cricket.”Honestly, when you pay the price that he has paid for 12 months, and see him come back with a smile on his face and super fit, he didn’t have to earn back any respect,” Langer said. “Everyone knew what he has been through the last 12 months. They also know what a great player he is. He has always had the respect as a player. He is a really good young bloke and he has come back with a smile on his face, he is fit, he had respect as soon as he came in.”Langer has observed Warner’s batting with optimism but also realism. He is looking for Warner the batsman, not Warner the hitter, perhaps with half an eye towards the Ashes. The Taunton century was Warner’s first international hundred in England or Wales after also touring in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2017. He has some ground to make up in the UK.”There is a bit of talk about how he was going. He has done an unbelievable job for the team in all games we have played so far,” Langer said. “You saw how emotional he was and how much it meant to him. It meant a lot to all of us as well.”If there was a criticism of Warner from Langer it was this: from where he set the team’s platform, a far bigger score was in the offing against Pakistan, and Australia’s subsequent decline needed to be seen as falling at least somewhat in his lap.”I think we probably left 50 or 60 runs. It was a really very frustrating last 15 overs for us with the bat with the way Aaron and Davey started. We had a perfect platform and went a bit away from our game plan there,” Langer said. “I remember Brian Lara used to always say, if you have a good day, have a great day because you have a lot of bad days in cricket. As very, very good as it was for Davey, he probably missed out on having a great day for himself and for the team and great players are frustrated about that.”But like Australia, with three wins from four games without having played particularly well, there is plenty more to come from Warner’s bat. “It’s a fickle game. You never want to mess with mother cricket,” Langer said. “He will just keep preparing well and we’ll make sure he stays nice and relaxed and enjoying his cricket because people with talent like that, when they are relaxed and well prepared, they perform. He has done that his whole career and hopefully he continues to do that.”Warner, having messed up before, is unlikely ever to do so again.

Agreement in place: Sunderland on the verge of signing "very good" player

Sunderland are believed to be closing in on the signing of a "very good" Championship player, according to a key update from Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

Sunderland transfer news

The Black Cats' form may have been disappointing under Michael Beale since he replaced Tony Mowbray as manager earlier this season, but they still have a chance of earning promotion this season, assuming results improve.

Glasgow Rangers' former manager Michael Beale.

Some new signings in the remaining days of the January transfer window could help in that respect, with a lot of players linked with moves to Sunderland recently. Leeds United centre-back Leo Hjelde has emerged as a primary target for Beale, with the youngster not always seen as an important part of Daniel Farke's plans this season, and he could represent an exciting addition given how highly he was thought of when he broke through at Celtic.

Another player who also continues to be backed to move to the Stadium of Light is Barnsley and Hungary midfielder Callum Styles, but it remains to be seen if they will get a deal over the line. A return for Manchester United ace Amad Dillao could also be on the cards, following an excellent spell on loan at the club last season.

Now, it looks as though an exciting piece of business is set to be completed very soon, following a significant update.

Leo Hjelde update

According to Downie on X, Sunderland have agreed a deal to sign Leeds United defender Leo Hjelde, with a permanent seal set to be completed imminently after a medical takes place.

leo-hjelde-leeds-united-championship

"Sunderland have agreed a fee with Leeds United for defender Leo Hjelde. The 20-year-old will move to Wearside on a permanent transfer. The left-sided defender will now undergo a medical in the North East."

This has the potential to be an excellent signing by Sunderland, with Hjelde a talented young defender who has even been compared to Liverpool and Netherlands colossus Virgil van Dijk in the past, courtesy of former Ross County manager John Hughes, who has also said of him:

"In terms of potential he plays a way beyond his age, with a maturity that is two or three years above himself. He’s only just turned 18, he’s just a baby, but he’s 6 foot 2 and still has a bit of growing to do. That’ll come. He’s an athlete, quick, nobody would run him. He had a great recovery if someone did go by him, and technically he’s very good."

While Hjelde's time at Leeds hasn't necessarily gone to plan in recent times, with only three appearances coming his way across all competitions this season, he is still only 20 years of age and has so much time ahead of him to mature further as a player.

Sunderland could supercharge Burstow with last-gasp move

Michael Beale could get even more out of Mason Burstow with this injection of creativity.

It will provide Beale with the added defensive quality and depth that he craves between now and the end of the season, and given the aforementioned Van Dijk comparison, supporters will surely be buoyed by his arrival.

'No experience is a bad experience' – USMNT star Matt Turner reflects on tough Nottingham Forest campaign for both himself and Gio Reyna

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Both Turner and Reyna had difficult seasons at Forest, with both heading towards the Copa America lacking minutes.

Reyna joined Forest in January on loan from Borussia Dortmund. The move was made to get Reyna valuable playing time, having fallen down the pecking order at Dortmund. It never came, though, as he played less than 300 minutes during his time in England.

The midfielder will once again be a key figure for the U.S. this summer, and Turner backed Reyna to come out of his Forest experience as a player, even with the difficulties.

    WHAT TURNER SAID

"No experience is a bad experience," Turner said. "He came to training every single day with a good attitude. I think you guys saw that. After he came in January, maybe it wasn't going the best in the beginning for him at Forest, and then he showed up and got Player of the Tournament in the Nations League, so he's working really hard.

He is in the form that we all expect him to be in. He brings a quality to training every time he steps out there, and he's really matured a lot. I've watched him grow up a little bit in this new experience away from sort of his boyhood club as well. He's made connections with new guys and it's been really fun to see him grow on the pitch and off the pitch and get that Premier League experience as well under his belt."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Turner himself had a difficult year at Forest after joining the club during the summer transfer window. He made the move to become a starter after a season on Arsenal's bench but, by the second half of the season, he'd lost that spot.

Turner's most recent Premier League minutes came all the way back in January, a concern for the USMNT. He remains the national team's No. 1, but Turner knows he'll have to maintain his level after a difficult season.

"Fortunately, but also unfortunately, for me, it's not the first time I've had to go through periods like that in my life and my career," Turner said. "For me, I approach training every single day with the same mentality whether I'm playing or whether I'm not. I work really, really hard. I try to get better in every area that I can and just be ready. I prepare for games I'm going to be playing, as exhausting as that can be, and I hope that maybe my name will be on the team sheet for that game, even when I know probably, in the back of my mind, it's not. I prepare like maybe it will be because what if it is?

"I try to just maintain that level of professionalism every single day, every training session, and just keep going and understanding that obviously, if I want to keep this shirt here, I've got to perform when I come here, so I have to stay engaged. I have to stay ready and focused and driven."
