Tottenham readying "important" Dragusin bid after Romero injury news

Tottenham are "ready to invest" an "important" sum to sign one ex-Juventus defender for manager Ange Postecoglou after Cristian Romero's injury.

Postecoglou wants new centre-back at Spurs

As admitted by Postecoglou himself, signing a new defender is a "priority" for Spurs in the looming January transfer window.

The north Londoners have suffered from a serious lack of depth at centre-half for the last two months, with Micky van de Ven out injured since early November with a hamstring problem.

Romero was suspended for a period, forcing Postecoglou to deploy a makeshift central defensive pairing of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies at that time, with the Argentine now out again through injury.

Tottenham reintroduced the Royal and Davies partnership against Brighton on Thursday, subsequently losing 4-2 in one of their worst performances of the Premier League campaign.

The need for more centre-back options is pretty prevalent, as Spurs become heavily linked with the likes of Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice and Genoa's Radu Dragusin.

Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that the Lilywhites want to seal a centre-back signing by next week, with both Dragusin and Todibo contending to join Postecoglou's side.

Spurs readying "important" Dragusin bid

Now, some news has come to light on their pursuit of the former.

Indeed, according to Italian news outlet Calciomercato, Tottenham are "ready to invest" an "important" sum to sign Dragusin.

The former Juventus defender, who is now starring for Genoa under Alberto Gilardino, is also attracting real interest from Jose Mourinho's Roma, Atalanta, AC Milan and Napoli but Spurs threaten to thwart both of the Serie A sides.

Genoa are asking for no less than £26 million for Dragusin, with Postecoglou's side preparing to make a significant offer even if it's "not so high" as the request.

According to the report, this comes after Romero's injury, which is set to keep him out for around five weeks, according to Tottenham's manager.

Dragusin has started 18 Serie A matches this season, with the Romania international standing out as one of Genoa's best-performing players by average match rating, according to WhoScored.

Journalist Paul Brown, speaking to GiveMeSport, also hailed the 21-year-old's "amazing" season and suggested Dragusin is the "most likely" signing Spurs make next month.

"Of all the names that Spurs are looking at, I think he might be the easiest to get. He is the most likely one they bring in," said Brown.

"They are looking for a centre-back under the age of 26 who is going to grow and has potential. Dragusin is young and has had an amazing season in Italy. He plays for a club in a bit of a financial mess as well. I think there are links there behind the scenes that Spurs could probably exploit."

'Jose Mourinho apologised to me' – Bastian Schweinsteiger opens up on miserable season at Man Utd and admits Red Devils 'should have achieved more' with Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Bastian Schweinsteiger says he always had a good relationship with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, despite being frozen out of the first-team.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The German midfielder arrived from Bayern Munich in July 2015 but saw his debut season under Louis van Gaal curtailed by a serious knee injury. When Mourinho arrived, Schweinsteiger had already been banned from first-team training, which he believes may be down to his decision to have treatment in Germany rather than Manchester – despite being given permission by Van Gaal.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Due to the fact Schweinsteiger played under Mourinho's rival Pep Guardiola at Bayern, there were suggestions the Portuguese boss did not trust the veteran midfielder because of the managers' contrasting playing styles. However, the 2014 World Cup winner believes Mourinho played little to no part in his United struggles and says the pair enjoyed a good relationship in Manchester.

    WHAT SCHWEINSTEIGER SAID

Schweinsteiger told FourFourTwo: “I must say, I always had a pretty good relationship with Jose Mourinho. When we spoke, it was very respectful. I really liked his character. He [Mourinho] apologised to me later. I gave him a handshake and said: ‘All good, don’t worry’. I would’ve liked to have played more, definitely, and with Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, because with those two players I think we could have achieved much more. But I’m grateful to the supporters for the way they welcomed me when I had the chance to play. My dream was to play at Old Trafford again and it happened after a while, after training on my own, or with the under-19s or under-17s. Playing at Old Trafford again really meant a lot to me.”

Schweinsteiger made just 35 appearances for United across all competitions, scoring three goals and earning himself an FA Cup winner's medal in 2015-16. The German then departed Manchester in March 2017 to join Major League Soccer franchise Chicago Fire, and he guided them to the playoffs the same year after a five-year drought. He then called time on his playing career in October 2019 and took up a role in punditry.

Clayton Lambert – 'USA should be hosting the World Cup'

Clayton Lambert speaks exclusively to Wisden Cricinfo

25-Feb-2019I haven’t seen much top-level cricket lately, not even the current West Indies tour, because where I live in Atlanta, there aren’t many satellite dishes available. I’ve been living in USA permanently since 1999, when I retired from international cricket after the South Africa tour.I’m looking forward to the Champions Trophy, but I guess I don’t have as much of a buzz as the other guys, because I’ve done it all before with West Indies. Still, there’s no doubt that representative cricket lifts the spirits, and it’s sure to be one of my biggest challenges. I’m looking forward to giving something back to a game that’s been very good to me.Cricket in the USA is mostly played at league level, and occasionally there’s the chance to play regional cricket, which is the highest form of the game over here. So all in all, it’s a bit less of a challenge, and it’s nice to get out and do some serious stuff from time to time.During my international career, I earned a reputation as a hard hitter of a cricket ball, although I was also capable of nice long innings as well. Admittedly, in our three-day Intercontinental Cup games, I’ve fared pretty badly, although that’s largely been down to the indifferent wickets – they haven’t been up to the standard that I’m used to.The bowlers have dominated in the Intercontinental Cup, but in the one-day game I’ve done better. American audiences are used to more hustle and bustle in their sports – if a fan wants to see a baseball game, he’ll give over one afternoon to do so – but three-day cricket is too time-consuming for this audience.I was a bit stunned that USA missed out on hosting any matches in the World Cup – if cricket hopes to make inroads over here, it has to stick its neck out and have a feel of the market. There’s not even any real need for the game to compete with the established sports, such as baseball and football, because there’s a place for everything in America. There are a lot of dollars over here.Besides, cricket is a very Commonwealth-orientated sport, so there is a huge immigrant population in the USA who are all yearning for the sport. League cricket is really exploding at the moment – last year in Atlanta, seven or eight new teams were formed, and you’d be astonished just how popular the game is in New York at present. All the more reason why the World Cup should be coming here. There was a good atmosphere down in Florida for our Intercontinental Cup match against Canada last month, although sadly the pitch left a bit to be desired, and it wasn’t a fair assessment of our skills. The Champions Trophy next month will a more relevant assessment of where we have reached as a team.Basically, we are just a bunch of league players – amateurs taking on professionals – so we are going to be up against it in the competition. But we are sure to learn a hell of a lot while we are here. And next year, we’ll be competing in a World-Cup qualifying tournament in Ireland, where the conditions are likely to be similar. So for us it is a win-win situation.

Liverpool must bench £55k-p/w "game-changer" alongside Gomez

Liverpool's three-match winning streak in the Premier League was snapped last weekend, as Jurgen Klopp's side lacklustre performance against Manchester United at Anfield allowed Arsenal to leapfrog them back into first place.

The Gunners are next up, making the trip to Merseyside in what promises to be a frenetic and tension-filled encounter between two of English football's best.

Klopp could ruin Elliott with Liverpool bid for £80m "genius"

Liverpool have been linked with this “unbelievable” midfielder once again, but do they really need him?

ByAngus Sinclair Dec 22, 2023

The hosts will be galvanised by the midweek mauling over West Ham United in the Carabao Cup – with the Hammers knocking Arsenal out earlier in the competition – and will know that a much-improved league effort is needed to clinch pole position at Christmas.

Joe Gomez's season in numbers

Starring in midweek, Joe Gomez will likely return to the bench this evening to pave the way for Trent Alexander-Arnold's return to the starting line-up, with the latter coming off the bench against West Ham to provide two assists and create four key passes.

Having been regularly criticised for his poor defending, as flimsy as plywood at times, the 26-year-old has been much better this season and has been noted for his “renaissance” by writer Joel Rabinowitz.

jarell-quansah-joe-gomez-liverpool-opinion

Performing all across the backline, Gomez's versatility and dynamism have been crucial in pumping fluency into Klopp's side, especially in allowing Alexander-Arnold to move further upfield in decisive moments.

However, starting him might not be the best option, with the aforementioned point possibly coming into play, slotting him into the defence in the second half.

In a more contentious selection choice, Klopp may well be inclined to relegate Colombian winger Luis Diaz to the bench after Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo demonstrated the effect they can have together in the frontline on Wednesday, with Mohamed Salah obviously retaining his starting spot.

Why Luis Diaz shouldn't start vs Arsenal

Diaz signed for Liverpool from FC Porto for an initial £37m in January 2022 and dazzled across the latter half of the 2021/22 campaign, scoring four goals and supplying three assists across just 13 Premier League matches.

Last year was ruined by injury, but this season, he has only scored three goals from 16 appearances in the Premier League – with two of those strikes coming across the opening two fixtures – and while he hasn't been poor by any stretch of the imagination, there are improvements to be made.

As per Sofascore, the £55k-per-week maverick has complemented his strikes with 1.1 key passes and 3.0 ball recoveries per game, also demonstrating his first-class crispness with an 81% pass success rate.

There has been a noticeable lack of impact recently though and against a defence such as Arsenal's, it might be wise to unleash Nunez at left wing as he was against the Hammers, where he created four key passes and looked a menace all evening.

It's important to remember that Diaz is a truly fantastic player and an indifferent run of form does not define him; having been lauded as a "game-changer" for his match-winning showing off the bench against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this season, as was said by reporter Charlotte Coates, Klopp might be wise to unleash him in the second half today.

Liverpool could sign the next Firmino with move for "exceptional" £26m star

Liverpool are in a tremendous position as the festive period consumes English football, with matches coming thick and fast and tensions high with so much on the line.

In the coming weeks, Jurgen Klopp's side will conclude their Europa League group phase campaign, complete successive Anfield fixtures in the Premier League against Manchester United and Arsenal, and clash against West Ham United for a spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Also first-placed in the Premier League after 15 matches, the Reds are flying if not quite clicking into full gear, and while the strides taken over the past months have been impressive, there is much more to be done, with an exciting new forward understood to have been earmarked.

Liverpool transfer news – Maximilian Beier

According to Sky Sports Germany's Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool are "interested" in signing Hoffenheim centre-forward Maximilian Beier, who holds a €30m (£26m) release clause in his contract.

While the journalist's delineation notes that many English outfits are attentive to the 21-year-old's situation, Liverpool are the only team explicitly mentioned, implying that Klopp's side perhaps currently lead the race.

The German has been in fine form this season and is vying to earn a place in his nation's European Championship 2024 squad, which will be held in his homeland.

Maximilian Beier's season in numbers

Graduating from Hoffenheim's academy, Beier has honed his craft over the past few years on loan with Bundesliga 2. side Hannover 04, scoring 15 goals and supplying seven assists across 68 appearances.

Provided with the opportunity to shine back with Die Kraichgauer this term, he has plundered six goals and four assists across just 13 appearances in the German top-flight, leading journalist Antonio Mango to remark on his "exceptional" displays.

As per Sofascore, he has also averaged 2.4 shots per game and has missed just two big chances in the Bundesliga – for reference, Darwin Nunez has missed 15 in the 2023/24 Premier League.

While Liverpool need to complete their midfield transfer work and bolster the backline, Beier's release clause makes for an enticing chance to sign a star in the making, and Klopp is evidently enamoured by his skill set.

How Maximilian Beier compares to Roberto Firmino

Deployed as either a left flanker or as the central focal point, Beier would add a sense of dynamism to the Anfield side's frontline and could be the missing piece to ensure that Klopp boasts a formidable frontline for many years to come.

As per FBref, the 6-foot striker ranks among the top 15% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 20% for progressive carries and the top 22% for successful take-ons per 90, highlighting a natural eye for goal and ease in progressing the play.

He could even be Liverpool's next Roberto Firmino, with the lionised Brazilian signing for the club from Hoffenheim for £29m in 2015, months before Klopp's appointment.

Firmino, aged 32, left the club for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia in the summer upon the conclusion of his contract, drawing the curtain on an illustrious and revolutionary stay on Merseyside that saw him chalk up 111 goals and 79 assists over 362 displays, integral in every piece of silverware won over the past years.

Heralded as a Liverpool "legend" by talkSPORT's Darren Ambrose, Firmino was silky and smooth, gliding across the pitch and baffling defenders with his deft touches – they say that while Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane wreaked prolific havoc, it was Firmino who was the true string-puller.

Beier, who is already showing signs of effectiveness across both his direct threat and his creativity, could be the dream heir – notably potentially signing from the same club – and with Plettenberg noting that there are multiple clubs in line, a January swoop may well be a stellar idea.

MS Dhoni rested for final two ODIs against Australia

MS Dhoni might have played his final ODI in India. The Indian team’s assistant coach Sanjay Bangar said at the press conference at the end of the Ranchi ODI that the wicketkeeper-batsman would be rested for the final two matches against Australia. Rishabh Pant is set to keep wicket in the remaining games after India captain Virat Kohli said “couple of new faces” would be brought in.Bangar said that Dhoni would be “taking a break” for the matches in Mohali on March 10 and in Delhi on March 13. Another player who may miss the Mohali ODI is fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who got hit on his shin in his follow-through after Aaron Finch drove the ball back in the fifth over of the third ODI.ALSO READ: ‘Don’t want to see any more collapses’ – Virat Kohli“There will certainly be some changes because Mahi (Dhoni) is not going to play the final two matches. He is taking rest,” Bangar said. “Also, Shami got hurt today in his leg so we will need to check whether he can be fit for day after (Mohali ODI). If he does not get fit then Bhuvneshwar Kumar could come in.”MS Dhoni walks out to bat at his home ground•Getty Images

While those two changes are likely, Kohli did state at the post-match presentation that India would be trying out a couple of players in the remaining matches – India’s last in the format before the World Cup.”We will have a few changes in the next couple of games,” Kohli said. “We will have to figure out what those changes are. But the idea is still to go out there and ask the guys to put in match-winning performances and take a lot of pride in winning for the country. That mindset will not change.”Yes, we’ll have a few new faces and they’ll be given chances, and they have to make the most of the chances because there’s a World Cup coming in. Everyone wants to be on that flight as well.”Although Kohli carved out another memorable century, his 41st in ODIs, the Ranchi crowd had packed the stands to see their local hero, Dhoni, in India colours probably for the last time at his home ground. Dhoni would have been a bit disappointed, when on 26, he failed to counter a full delivery from legspinner Adam Zampa. It brought to an end a 59-run fourth-wicket partnership with Kohli after the pair had been brought together at 27 for 3.Keeping the World Cup in mind, the selectors have been balancing the workload of key players over the past few months. Kohli was rested after the first three ODIs in New Zealand while strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah was given a break after the Test series in Australia in January before he returned for the current series.Dhoni, 37, has of late faced some hamstring problems and was even rested for a couple of matches in New Zealand. With the IPL beginning on March 23, where Dhoni will lead defending champions Chennai Super Kings again, the selectors would have wanted Dhoni, one of the key players for India at the World Cup, to get some rest. That decision opens the doors for Pant to play the only two ODIs India play before the World Cup, which begins on May 30. Pant has only played three ODIs yet, but both Kohli and MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, have strongly backed the 21-year-old, saying he is part of the World Cup deliberations.

Haris Sohail's ton in vain as Australia complete clean sweep

Glenn Maxwell was the standout player of the match, following up a barnstorming 70 off 33 balls with 1 for 45 in his ten overs

The Report by Danyal Rasool31-Mar-2019Once more, it was Pakistan who had the centurion, while Australia walked away with the victory. Haris Sohail’s career-best score of 130 went in vain as Australia secured what was in the end a fairly comfortable 20-run win, their eighth on the bounce. It was set up by the batsmen, the top four all registering half-centuries as Australia exploited Pakistan’s sloppy fielding and uninspired bowling performance to plunder 327, the biggest total of the series. Targets in excess of 300 have only ever been chased successfully once in 26 times in the UAE, and despite Pakistan’s valiant efforts, they would not be adding to that statistic today. From the moment Haris was dismissed, the result looked inevitable, with Pakistan eventually finishing up on 307.The chase began inauspiciously with Abid Ali, passed fit to open after a nasty shoulder injury had forced him off the field during Australia’s innings, nicked off for a first-ball duck. It was a sharp lesson that in Pakistan cricket, there’s very little space between extreme highs and crushing lows; in the fourth game, he had made Pakistan’s highest ever score on debut with 112.Shan Masood and Haris consolidated well, however, taking control of the innings during the Powerplay as they kept pace with Australia. It was only after Masood was trapped in front by Adam Zampa, breaking a superb 108-run partnership, that Pakistan struggled to find a reliable partner for Haris. Mohammad Rizwan fell early, thanks to a superb catch at mid-on from Nathan Lyon off Glenn Maxwell, who played nearly as important a role with the ball as he had with the bat. With Umar Akmal, Haris put on another century stand; this one tallied 102. Umar displayed a maturity that has been absent from his game for much of his career, rotating the strike and finding the odd boundary when the opportunity allowed. Haris appeared to be playing on another pitch altogether, so assured was his footwork and so extravagantly confident his strokes.Despite their pluck, however, it never looked sustainable, and the fact Pakistan have a long tail must have played heavy on the minds of the pair. Ultimately, Umar fell in predictable fashion, his patience finally deserting him. With the required rate approaching nine, he charged Nathan Lyon, who was experienced enough to drop the ball short. Nowhere near the pitch, he went for the heave anyway, sending it more up than away. Jason Behrendorff at long-on actually had to charge in from the boundary to complete the catch, and the clean sweep was looking ever more assured.Four balls later, Haris guided one from Kane Richardson straight into backward point’s hands, and from thereon it was just Imad Wasim thwacking a few to try and make it as tight as possible. It was an entertaining cameo, Pakistan’s stand-in captain scoring a breezy 34-ball 50 to keep Australia honest right to the end. But with support dwindling from the other side, the percentages were always in Australia’s favour, and all Pakistan could manage was the consolation of their highest total of the series. As has been a reliable pattern over the past four games, the tone of the game was set by Australia’s openers, a 134-run stand between Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja paving the way for the big total.Just like Maxwell had done in the last game, Khawaja fell two runs shy of yet another ODI hundred. Even so, it was his fifth score of 88 or more in his past seven innings, and the supporting cast of Finch, Shaun Marsh and Maxwell did their jobs; all got half-centuries.Pakistan won the toss for the fourth time in five games, and seeing how close they had come previously, Imad opted to field again. To restrict Australia, however, they would need early wickets, and with the form both Finch and Khawaja are in, that was no easy feat.Pakistan’s lackadaisical fielding efforts didn’t exactly help build pressure, and the incoming Mohammad Abbas – brought in to regain the control Mohammad Hasnain had lacked – had the opposite effect. Once Khawaja got him away for a pair of boundaries in the fifth over, Australia were away, and Finch’s lofted six off Abbas’ following over indicated their fearlessness against Pakistan’s bowling attack.Imad began with a maiden, but so poor was Pakistan’s ground fielding it was hard to see how it would complement the bowling. Turning ones into twos is a good skill to have, with the proviso that you need to be the batting side. In the field, Pakistan were continuously guilty of this magnanimity, with Umar Akmal and Yasir Shah just two of the more notable repeat offenders. There weren’t any catches grassed, but then again, Finch and Khawaja didn’t so much as allow Pakistan a sniff for the first half of the innings. With time to seal a World Cup slot running out, Usman Shinwari could not have made a better final impression this series. He allowed just 14 runs in his first five overs, taking the wicket of Finch through nothing more than raw pace and a hint of seam movement, rushing him into a shot which never made contact. He was also the man to remove the other opener, again using his tearaway pace as the ball climbed onto Khawaja, who had become noticeably edgy as he approached his hundred. Bowling at the death might not have helped Shinwari’s figures, but he still finished with 4 for 49 in his ten overs.Maxwell was predictably explosive, given a perfect platform by the top order. Once more, however, he could have walked back early. Off the first ball of his innings, he helped Shinwari to fine leg, where a horrible misjudgement from the fielder saw the ball sail over his head and for a boundary. He would make Pakistan pay for it again, something Pakistan caught wind of when he smashed Yasir Shah for three fours in the following over. In what seemed like minutes, he had had brought up a 26-ball fifty. There was still time for a four and a six off Haris before Junaid Khan finally knocked back his off stump for a barnstorming 70 off 33. With ball in hand, he would return figures of 1-45, to finish far and away the standout player of the match. Pakistan may walk away from this series with a few positives; they will wish they were walking away with at least one win too.
