Malan guides Middlesex to victory

19-Aug-2010
ScorecardDawid Malan finished on 84 not out as Middlesex duly wrapped up their fourth victory of the season beating Division Two leaders Glamorgan by six wickets on the final morning at Cardiff. It took the batsmen, Malan and Gareth Berg, only 10.4 overs and 38 minutes to knock off the 50 runs they required for victory. That was after Middlesex had ended the third day in a dominant position at 200 for 4. Middlesex took 19 points from the contest to Glamorgan’s three, with the Welsh county set to lose top spot to Sussex. But with three games remaining Glamorgan are still 17 points ahead of third-placed Gloucestershire in the promotion race. Glamorgan opened with spin from both ends at the start of the final day but it proved ineffectual as the fifth-wicket pair added 34 from the first seven overs.Malan, 52 overnight, pulled Dean Cosker for four and in the next over Berg cover drove Robert Croft to the boundary. Stand-in skipper Mark Wallace turned to seam after the first seven overs, but when he decided to take the second new ball Middlesex only required 10 more to win.Victory arrived with Malan driving David Harrison over cover for four. Glamorgan will now have to regroup before they play Sussex at Hove next week, a match that will almost certainly see them without their captain Jamie Dalrymple, who broke his right thumb when he was hit by seamer Pedro Collins while batting during the first innings.

Netherlands skittle Zimbabweans

Scorecard
A resurgent Netherlands, fresh from their six-wicket trouncing of a full-strength Bangladesh side in Glasgow three days ago, have handed out similar treatment to the touring Zimbabwe XI. Grafting innings from Tom Cooper (49) and Wesley Barresi (47) carried Netherlands to 194 for 9 before Maurits Jonkman and Mudassar Bukhari combined to skittle the Zimbabweans for 136, taking three cheap wickets apiece to seal a 58-run win.The pitch at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen played consistently slow and low during the recent World Cricket League Division One tournament, and conditions were no different today. It appeared Bas Zuiderent had erred after he opted to bat first and Netherlands slid to 48 for 3 in the 18th over, but Cooper held the top order together for the first half of the innings before he was stumped one run short of a half-century of Sean Williams’ left-arm spin.He had done well to see off challenging opening spells from Ed Rainsford and Shingi Masakadza, who removed both Netherlands openers before Nathan Waller’s medium pace did for Tom de Grooth and Zuiderent.Netherlands were tottering at 94 for 5 when Cooper departed, but Barresi and Bukhari staved off the collapse with a 33-run stand before Barresi took his side to within reach of a respectable target by adding a further 50 runs for the seventh wicket with Ruud Nijman. After he was run out with the score at 177, the Zimbabwean opening bowlers returned to pick up another wicket each and keep Netherlands to under 200.The Zimbabweans would no doubt have been confident chasing such a small total, but Zuiderent’s men will have been far more familiar with a bowler-friendly pitch and chipped steadily away at the batting line-up as three partnerships worth more than 20 were put together, but none went past Regis Chakabva and Stuart Matsikenyeri’s 25 for the second wicket.Charles Coventry did his best to inject some life into the middle order with a 37-ball 31, and when he was caught behind off Bukhari the Zimbabweans were 98 for 5 – a very similar position to that midway through the Dutch innings. But none of the lower order came to term with the conditions, Jonkman picking up the last three wickets to fall. With Williams unable to bat after injuring himself in the field, Jonkman sealed the win by disturbing Natsai Mushangwe’s stumps in the 40th over.Despite the fact that only two members of the Zimbabwe XI squad – Coventry and Craig Ervine – are recent regulars in the senior national side, every member of the team has represented their country at some level and few would have backed Netherlands to pull off a convincing win with such ease. The Zimbabweans will have to acclimatise quickly if they are to hold off what is sure to be a spirited attack from a buoyed Netherlands side when the two teams meet again for a four-day Intercontinental Cup game on Sunday.

West Ham only made loan bid for Caleta-Car

According to RMC Sport (via Sport Witness), Marseille had ‘not received an offer deemed sufficiently interesting’ for Duje Caleta-Car, as West Ham only made a loan bid in January.

The Lowdown: Centre-back fiasco

David Moyes’ options at centre-back began to deplete with the season-ending injury sustained by Angelo Ogbonna, who suffered a cruciate ligament rupture at the beginning of November.

When Kurt Zouma suffered a hamstring injury in early December, from which he has only just recovered, the Hammers were left with just two senior centre-backs available for selection in Craig Dawson and Issa Diop.

West Ham were intent on finding a suitable centre-back to bolster their options in that area and deemed Caleta-Car a good option for Moyes’ side. However, a deal never materialised, and the Irons remain short on defensive options despite Zouma’s return.

The Latest: Loan offer not enough

According to a report by RMC Sport (via Sport Witness), Marseille maintained that they had ‘not received an offer deemed sufficiently interesting’ for the Croatia international.

It’s claimed that ‘only a loan offer’ arrived from West Ham, which led to a stalemate between the two clubs. The Irons were looking for a loan deal with an option to buy, whereas Marseille were holding out for a permanent sale.

The Verdict: Missed opportunity

Having previously been very close to joining Liverpool, many Hammers fans would have known of the Croatian’s quality.

With a wealth of experience in the French top flight totalling 87 appearances, it is a mystery as to why the east London club would not sanction a £15m move for the player, especially when it was position clearly in need of addressing.

As a result, Irons fans can only pray that their centre-back situation doesn’t get any worse before the end of the season.

Arsenal eyeing Aubameyang replacement

Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign Alexander Isak this month, according to reports…

What’s the word?

Catalan outlet El Nacional (via the Daily Mail) claim that the Gunners are in pole position to sign the Real Sociedad striker as manager Mikel Arteta looks to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

The 22-year-old could make his move to the Emirates Stadium this month as the LaLiga outfit do not want to sell to a direct rival, with Barcelona also said to be interested.

Isak has a €90m (£75m) release clause at the Reale Arena, though Transfermarkt value the 31-cap Sweden international at around half that figure (£36m).

Bye-bye Aubameyang?

Aubameyang has not played for the north London giants since the 6th of December after being stripped of the captaincy and it’s thought that the club are willing to listen to offers for him during the January transfer window, as per Sky Sports.

A disciplinary issue is what has caused the 32-year-old’s demise at London Colney and with him set to continue to earn a whopping £350k-per-week over the next 18 months, it’s no wonder that the Gunners want him gone sooner rather than later.

Isak seems like a very wise replacement and one that could instantly make his mark at Arsenal.

The Swedish sensation has been in electric form once again this campaign, delivering seven goals from 21 appearances, across the Spanish top-flight and the Europa League.

That builds on last season’s tally of 17 goals in 34 league games.

After earning the division’s ‘Young Player of the Year’ award that campaign, Isak caught the eye at Euro 2020, where former Manchester United defender turned pundit, Rio Ferdinand, praised his ability.

“This kid, Isak, he was a problem today for the defenders in the Spain team,” he said during BBC’s coverage of Sweden vs Spain (via football.london). “He was a nuisance. He showed today why he’s got Young Player of the Year in La Liga. He was the outlet.”

Meanwhile, fellow ex-pro Gary Lineker has previously dubbed him an “exceptional talent”.

On the above evidence, Arteta would surely love to replace his controversial former captain with a player of Isak’s calibre. It’ll now be on Edu Gaspar and co to get it done.

The later they leave the Spaniard’s striker situation, the trickier things will get.

Pressure on South Africa to level series

Match facts

February 24, 2010
Start time 14.30 (09.00GMT)The bowlers will have to be on their mark in what’s expected to be a batting belter•AFP

The Big Picture

The series opener in Jaipur shouldn’t have got so close. Ashish Nehra should have been bowled off the penultimate ball of the innings. India’s total, as a result of that freakish incident – when the ball deflected off the stumps – should have been four runs less. India’s bowlers shouldn’t have allowed the South African tail to put their specialist batsmen to shame. A more conclusive camera angle/replay would have determined whether Sachin Tendulkar legitimately saved the boundary in the final over. All these significant incidents proved the difference between an Indian win and any other result. The South Africans would no doubt have debated these ifs and buts after that game. Dale Steyn and Wayne Parnell scripted a near-Houdini act but it couldn’t hide what was otherwise an unflattering batting performance, Jacques Kallis excepted. It was puzzling why they omitted their in-form player Hashim Amla – not the most well-known limited-overs player around but one who adds glue to the top order. South Africa missed him and could sacrifice one of the openers for him. They have to get their combination right because another defeat tomorrow will render the series lost and the final ODI a dead rubber. The other area of concern is the number of extras. All bowlers, except Johan Botha, conceded wides and there were 12 in all, which made a difference in the final outcome. It doesn’t necessarily warrant wholesale changes to the bowling attack. All they need to focus on is discipline and their ability to vary their pace a lot more to induce mistakes. It’s imperative bowlers from both sides step up because the curator at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior has promised another track full of runs. The Indian bowlers have problems too. Their struggles in the death overs are well documented and have become more pronounced in Zaheer Khan’s absence. In Jaipur, Dhoni was unhappy with the way they gave away runs with the new ball, let alone in the tense final stages. Both Nehra and Sreesanth are mercurial in nature – they either have a great day or a forgettable day. Dhoni had to rely on part-timers, and the gamble of bowling Suresh Raina didn’t pay off. Whether India bring in a specialist spinner on not is something that may be discussed behind closed doors.

Watch out for…

Suresh Raina: On a batting belter in Jaipur, Raina was the only Indian batsman to pass fifty in a total approaching 300. He occupied the crease for nearly 20 overs and collected boundaries with upper cuts and pull shots. His slog sweep is his best shot in the book and we’ve seen that in the IPL. His bowling was a disappointment, but that’s not why he’s in the team.Albie Morkel: He’s not in peak form with bat or ball and must be feeling the pressure. He was the batting Powerplay specialist in Australia last year but has struggled for fluency since then. With the ball, he has struggled in the last seven games, picking up five wickets at an expensive 45.80. Should South Africa opt for a spin-bowling allrounder in Roelof van der Merwe, the axe could fall on Morkel because there are already three specialist seamers in the line-up.

Team news

Virender Sehwag was off the field in Jaipur with a sore lower back but the word from the Indian camp is that they’ll take a final call tomorrow. He batted in the nets without any apparent discomfort. Sreesanth was all over the place, leaking 8.22 an over, despite taking the all-important wicket of Kallis. If they choose to drop him, Sudeep Tyagi could get his chance.India (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Dinesh Karthik, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Ashish Nehra, 11 Sreesanth/Sudeep TyagiThe only possible change for South Africa is the inclusion of Amla in place of someone from the top order.South Africa: (probable) 1 Herschelle Gibbs, 2 Loots Bosman/Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis (capt), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Alviro Petersen, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Johan Botha, 11 Charl Langeveldt.

Pitch and conditions

The pitch was relaid two years back, and the curator of the Gwalior Division Cricket Association, Ajay Sahasrabuddhe, has guaranteed a 300-plus surface. He says the toss will not be a factor, and the spinners may get some assistance as the match progresses. There is a tinge of grass to bind the surface together, but it isn’t expected to give any advantage to the bowlers. To counter the dew, the groundstaff will use a spray called APSA 80 on the outfield. The same spray was used during the Champions Trophy in India in 2006. It rained on Monday night, but the forecast for tomorrow is sunshine, with a maximum of 28 degrees Celsius.

Stats and trivia

  • Gwalior has been a happy hunting ground for India, winning seven out of nine ODIs there.
  • India and South Africa last played an ODI at this venue back in 1991, the tourists’ first international series after re-admittance. In a match reduced to 45 overs, India posted 223 and won by 38 runs.
  • Amla has opened in 19 of his 21 innings in ODIs and has done well at that position, averaging 48.41. He averages close to 50 in ODIs and made his debut nearly four years after playing his first Test.

Quotes

“Each of the 16 players in the squad is capable. Winning or losing, we will try to get the best combination. The quicker we get the combination the better. Rotation will go much longer than this tour.”
“You have to see the status of player before the World Cup. Injuries keep coming on. We will try to rotate players so that the best 11-12 players are there at that time.”

New Zealand target another uncomplicated win

Monday’s match presents New Zealand a chance to complete a quick series victory against a struggling Bangladesh

Big PictureBangladesh cricket fans looking for good news over the past week have had to follow the South Asian Games, where their Under-21 team won gold in a tournament also containing the likes of Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The senior team in New Zealand, though, has been abject in the two matches so far and were thrashed in the only Twenty20 and the first ODI in Napier. For New Zealand, Monday’s match presents a chance to complete a quick series victory. With several of their key players injured, the contests against Bangladesh are a good opportunity to test their bench strength, and Daniel Vettori will be satisfied with the performance of both the players they blooded in Napier – Peter Ingram making a steady 69 and Andy McKay nipping out two top-order batsmen. Perhaps the biggest gain from that victory was Jacob Oram showing that he had not lost his lethal hitting ability, something which has not been on view too often of late. The only redeeming features for Bangladesh were a robust opening stand between Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes, and young Shaiful Islam’s performance – four wickets, including giving away only four runs in a double-wicket over in the middle of Oram’s blitzkreig. However, unless the Bangladesh middle order gets its act together, their hunt for a maiden victory in any format in New Zealand is likely to be extended.Form guide (most recent first)New Zealand WWWLL
Bangladesh LLLLLWatch out forAt 25, Ross Taylor is already New Zealand’s most important batsman in the middle order. He was in stunning form in the domestic Twenty20 tournament in January, leading the run-charts and rounding it off with a 30-ball 80 to hand Central Districts the title. Bangladesh have already had a taste of how dangerous he can be when he slammed a couple of sixes on his way to a quick 51 in the first ODI.Tamim Iqbal is becoming an increasingly influential batsman for Bangladesh. A naturally aggressive player, he has worked hard on tempering his attacking stroke play. Another aspect of his batting that has improved is the way he deal with spinners, using an effective sweep shot to blunt them. With Mohammad Ashraful and Shakib Al Hasan not in the greatest of touch, Tamim has added responsibility at the top of the order.Team newsThe only decision for New Zealand is whether they want to bring in Ian Butler for one of the three quick bowlers who played on Friday. Bangladesh have named their playing XI. Mohammad Ashraful, despite a lean run, keeps his place but Raqibul Hasan has been dropped for Aftab Ahmed. Rubel Hossain has earned a starting spot ahead of Nazmul Hossain.Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Mohammad Ashraful, 4 Aftab Ahmed,5 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 8 Naeem Islam, 9 Shahadat Hossain, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Rubel Hossain.
Quotes”Oram has been a bit frustrated with results but [on Friday] we saw a guy who, if we can get him back to where he was 12-18 months ago, is going to be a big help to this side.”
Mark Greatbatch, New Zealand coach, emphasises what an important player Jacob Oram can be to the one-day outfit.

Walter sente lesão, Jô quase vai para o gol e garoto assume vaga no Timão

MatériaMais Notícias

O goleiro Walter vive outro drama no Corinthians.

Moyes eyeing Dael Fry for West Ham

As per 90min, West Ham United manager David Moyes is eyeing a move for Middlesbrough’s Dael Fry amid his search for a new centre-back.

The Lowdown: Irons suffer Ogbonna blow…

Since defensive mainstay Angelo Ogbonna’s anterior cruciate ligament injury, which rules him out for the foreseeable future, the Hammers have been eyeing new additions in the January market.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Evening Standard claimed that Moyes will be backed to bring in a defender mid-season after their crushing Ogbonna blow, with the likes of Burnley’s James Tarkowski linked with a move.

Liverpool’s Nathaniel Phillips is also reportedly on their radar as the Irons weigh up plenty of options, with one fruitful source potentially being the Championship.

Football League World claimed that West Ham have ‘already made checks’ regarding Fry and QPR colossus Rob Dickie, with 90min now sharing the latest.

The Latest: West Ham eye Fry…

Backing FLW’s claim, 90min reporter Cudworth said that Moyes has sent his scouts to watch the Middlesbrough centre-back alongside the likes of Dickie and Lloyd Kelly.

He is one of the English second tier’s ‘hottest properties’ and West Ham could turn to the division as they scour their network far and wide in the pursuit of a defender.

The Verdict: Good option?

Thriving at the Riverside Stadium and continuing to be a key player for new Boro manager Chris Wilder, the 24-year-old would come to West Ham with significant sell-on value.

He is also valued at around £5.4m by Transfermarkt, and while this is just an estimation, any figure around that price would gift the Hammers a cheaper alternative to other targets like Tarkowski, who is rated at around £20m.

Possessing a playing-style similar to that of John Stones (90min), Fry’s teammate Marcus Tavernier is a big admirer, recently calling him ‘unbelievable’.

If Moyes is to turn to the Championship in search of centre-back options, Boro’s key defender certainly stands out.

Everton should stay clear of Calum Chambers

Everton have been linked with a transfer move for Arsenal defender Calum Chambers as the winter window fast approaches.

What’s the story?

According to reports in the national papers, the Toffees are exploring the possibility of signing the 26-year-old for a reduced fee as he enters the final months of his current contract in north London.

Everton were heavily linked with a move for Chambers’ teammate Ainsley Maitland-Niles over the summer before that move collapsed, and now Rafa Benitez could be forced to change targets.

The report states that: “Everton have reportedly identified Calum Chambers as their back-up plan in January should they fail in pursuit of his Arsenal team-mate Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

“Rafael Benitez is looking to bolster Everton in the right back position and he is said to have identified two players at Arsenal that find themselves on the periphery. “

It goes on to claim that the preferred option for the Goodison Park hierarchy remains a short-term loan deal for Maitland-Niles with the option of a permanent move next year, but that the Gunners could allow Chambers to leave for as little as £5 million in January.

He could be Everton’s new Mason Holgate

Despite signing for Arsenal back in 2014 as a highly-promising youngster from boyhood side Southampton, Chambers has only made 121 appearances for the capital club in all competitions.

The £50,000-per-week dud has shown glimpses of his true potential – particularly during an impressive loan spell at Fulham – although he’s failed to produce quality performances on a consistent basis throughout his career.

After a particularly poor showing against Chelsea back in 2018, pundit Tony Cascarino labelled him an “accident waiting to happen,” and he’s done little to dispel that notion since.

“Calum Chambers joined Arsenal from Southampton more than three years ago and also won the first of his three England full caps about that time, as a 19-year-old, yet he still looks like a kid who has only just been given his chance,” said Cascarino.

“Last night, the 22-year-old central defender was nervous on the ball and lacking concentration – he was an accident waiting to happen.”

Therefore, Benitez should carefully consider making an approach for Chambers over the coming months, with the former England international bearing a striking resemblance to current Everton outsider Mason Holgate.

Both players showed promise in their youth deputising at right-back and centre-back, yet both have perhaps become a jack of all trades and masters of none.

Last season, for instance, Holgate became rather error-prone in his duties at Goodison Park.

Replacing an instrumental figure such as Seamus Coleman will be a big job for any new arrival, and it’s unlikely that Chambers will be able to pick up where the Irishman left off.
