Newell spells out Patel's task

Samit Patel claims not to have any thoughts of an England recall but after a stalemate at Taunton his Notts coach, and now England selector, Mick Newell, said it was too early to write him off

Samit Patel claims not to have any thoughts of an England recall but in this match gave the best impression of the potential that England could call upon in their new era under Peter Moores.Patel breezed his way past fifty on a particularly mediocre final day which brought personal satisfaction for Phil Jaques as he added 95 on the day to reach an unbeaten 150, but which long before his six-and-a-quarter hour stint was over was heading inexorably towards the second tame draw in succession at Taunton.Patel also had a second century in the match laid before him, only to sweep a full delivery from Johann Myburgh and be bowled for 75. But the innings continued a smart run of form that suggests, at 29, he may be approaching his peak. It is only 15 months ago since he last played for England.”I don’t think the door should be shut on Samit,” Mick Newell, the Nottinghamshire director of cricket and new England selector said. “He is a potential international cricketer still. He has been in and around the edges for a number of years. He has to score heavily and he needs his bowling to be of a level where he offers both I think, because of the potential for an allrounder who is a spin bowler rather than a seamer.”He is nearly 30 now, and he’s got to have an opportunity, but he has got to churn out regular scores. He has played very nicely in two innings this year – 90 against Lancashire when it was doing a lot, and the innings here. He’s a very attractive batsman to watch when he’s batting like that.”Newell described the England team as “more of a clean slate than it has been for a number of years” and suggested a number of players should be hopeful of a recall if they perform. Nick Compton being one of them. Discarded before the Ashes last summer, despite two centuries against New Zealand, Compton could be considered again with England requiring a new opener and potentially a No. 3 for the Sri Lanka Tests and India series to follow.”People who have played recently like Craig Kieswetter and Nick Compton will feel they have a good chance of playing,” Newell said. “And they certainly do. But it’s not just about scoring three hundreds to get in, it still comes down to opinion and belief as to who will score the most when you put them on to the bigger stage.”Here, Compton suffered a poor dismissal – caught behind cutting to the gentle seamers of Steven Mullaney for only 25 – but a century at Durham in the second match of the season could be the innings to fulfil the criteria Newell describes. Craig Kieswetter’s three dropped catches – he also put down Phil Jaques on the final day – were disappointing but with Johnny Bairstow not convincing as England’s next-best wicketkeeper and a fitness cloud around Matt Prior, Kieswetter could be one of a number of gloveman to consider.James Taylor, a player Newell has been able to keep a closer eye on, was similarly handled to Compton in being dropped by England without doing too much wrong. Taylor was again part of the England Lions touring party in the winter and enjoyed a strong tour of Sri Lanka including a first-class best 242 not out.”Both of them have had a taste, and both of them will feel they want some more,” Newell said. “That’s the whole challenge. If you want some more, you have to show everyone you really are hungry. You’ve got two blokes there who really love batting, who want to churn the runs out.”For the most part it is going to come down to scoring a volume of runs. Someone like Gary Ballance has pushed himself forward with the runs that he has got this season. The challenge to Nick and James is to make the volume but also to make the important innings, the match winning innings.”Taylor had little chance of a match-winning innings at Taunton on such a tame wicket that only yielded 23 wickets in four days but he was visibly disappointed to be lbw for just 5 three overs into a final day where Phil Jaques made a first century for his new county.”James is 23 going on 47 I think. He’s very mature, and he’s very well organised about how he goes about his practice and training – a pleasure to have in your team. He’s hitting the ball nicely, and I thought he was playing very well in his first innings. He feels he can compete with these guys for that middle order spot that might be going up for grabs.”

– O Bahia vai manter a mesma pegada.

PCB contemplate series-based broadcast deal

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is contemplating a series-by-series deal with broadcasters for their forthcoming matches in this season

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is contemplating a series-based deal with broadcasters for the forthcoming matches in this season. Pakistan are scheduled to play two Tests, five ODIs and two T20s against South Africa in Sharjah and Dubai, from October 14. They are also scheduled to play Sri Lanka in the UAE, although the two boards have not confirmed the dates. The PCB is yet to finalise a broadcasting deal after its five-year contract with TEN Sports, worth $140 million, ended last month. However, the PCB incurred a loss of nearly $80 million on this deal, following the cancellation of bilateral series against India between 2009 and 2011. The broadcasting deal is one of the major sources of income for the PCB and, with no series against India scheduled until 2020, these could be testing times for the board as it may be hit by a financial crunch following a long-standing budget-deficit. In 2011-12, the deficit was nearly 700 million Pakistani rupees. The PCB’s Governing Board, in their emergency meeting at the National Cricket Academy, has decided to appoint the former ICC president Ehsan Mani as their advisor on their television deal.”We are yet to issue a tender for the broadcaster after finishing our five-year deal last month,” a PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo. “It requires a specific procedural time and systematic restructuring of the bidding process and finalising the deal. But we have an alternative, i.e. to go with a series-by-series deal – in case we need that for any of our upcoming home series – before going into a long-term deal with a broadcaster.”The interim setup of the PCB may also be affecting its chances of securing a long-term deal. The suspension of Zaka Ashraf as chairman led to a delay in the PCB budget this year and the process of renewing the broadcasting deal was also delayed as a result. The PCB’s functions were on hold for almost a month, until the appointment of interim chairman Najam Sethi. The Islamabad High Court has ordered Sethi to hold elections within 90 days but has not given a detailed order. Although the PCB refused to comment on its internal functioning, it has confirmed that the bidding process for a broadcaster is currently on hold, with various other issues taking precedence. It is likely the board may look to secure a six-year deal next year, once a more stable administrative setup is in place.

USACA plans to resume national tournaments

The USA Cricket Association (USACA) announced on Friday its intention to stage a Men’s National Tournament at a newly developed cricket facility in the city of Indianapolis, Indiana beginning in 2014

Peter Della Penna15-Jun-2013The USA Cricket Association (USACA) announced on Friday its intention to stage a Men’s National Tournament at a newly developed cricket facility in the city of Indianapolis, Indiana beginning in 2014. A joint press release by USACA and Indy Parks stated that USACA will host a four-day national championship involving eight regional teams in Indianapolis every summer from 2014-2016.”The 2014 USACA National Men’s Cricket Championship will provide the most talented cricketers in this country with the opportunity to compete in a first class facility against the best in the nation,” said USACA chief executive Darren Beazley. “It will be an important component in USACA’s mission to develop cricket at all levels, from youth to adult, and it will create an occasion to showcase our sport to a non-traditional cricket audience.”Last month, the city of Indianapolis approved plans for a $6 million multi-sport facility to be built on the east side of the city at the site of Post Road Community Park. Plans for the cricket facility were first reported by ESPNcricinfo in 2009. In addition to cricket, the facility will also have sports fields designed for soccer, rugby and lacrosse among other sports. According to a source, the cricket fields will have artificial pitches in order to make the facility easier to maintain for multi-sport purposes.”For over 30 years, Indianapolis has billed itself as the amateur sports capital of the world,” said Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard. “This facility and this tournament puts Indianapolis in a leadership position as the second most popular sport in the world grows in this country.”Despite the mayor’s eagerness over the plan, it has not been met with unanimous approval. “If we’re dependent on them, I’m worried,” Indianapolis City Councilor Christine Scales was quoted as saying about USACA in the . Scales is leading a counter proposal in city government to use the $6 million in funds designated for the stadium to pay for more police officers on the city’s streets instead.Various Indianapolis media outlets reported on Friday that some city officials expect thousands of spectators to attend from across the country for the USACA tournaments. City officials also reportedly are anticipating that USACA’s domestic championships will generate revenue for both the city and USACA through ticket sales and broadcast rights fees.Such ambitious targets would be a giant leap forward from the overall lack of community support shown during the course of recent history in domestic and international tournaments involving the United States regional and national teams. USACA has no scheduled domestic tournaments for 2013 and has not held a 50-over national championship since 2010.The last domestic tournaments USACA held of any kind were in 2011. That year, the inaugural USACA Twenty20 national tournament was shifted from Dallas, Texas to Newark, New Jersey just weeks before the scheduled starting date. Despite Twenty20 routinely billed as a format perfectly suited to the American audience, only a handful of spectators attended. The tournament was infamous for its shoddy organization, treacherous field conditions and administrators who had to be separated outside the boundary after nearly coming to blows.Poor spectator turnout for domestic events has been a routine problem for tournaments staged in Lauderhill, Florida at the $70 million Central Broward Regional Park. After opening in 2008, USACA held their Men’s 50-over National Championship at the 5000 seat stadium in Florida in 2009 and 2010, during which not more than a few dozen people attended. Roughly the same amount of spectators turned out this March for the 2013 ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 tournament, which USA won 8-0 to clinch a spot at the 2013 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier. None of the matches were broadcast on TV or radio.”Not one of those events puts anybody in the stands,” said Lauderhill Mayor Richard J Kaplan in an interview with ESPNcricinfo in April. “It doesn’t sell one ticket. I don’t need a multi-million dollar stadium with 5000 permanent seats to sit there with nobody using it.”The decision to host national tournaments at a facility with an artificial wicket rather than the natural turf facility offered at the Central Broward Regional Park may drive a bigger wedge between Kaplan and USACA, pushing Kaplan and Lauderhill officials towards carrying out a plan to redevelop the stadium for sports other than cricket in an effort to generate revenue.Kaplan detailed his frustrations over the lack of revenue generating cricket events at the Central Broward Regional Park in a letter to ICC chief executive David Richardson in April. In that letter and a subsequent interview with ESPNcricinfo, Kaplan placed the blame squarely on USACA for not doing enough to promote the sport. He had been pushing for more events with Full Members to be held at the stadium, such as last year’s successful Twenty20 series between West Indies and New Zealand, but said that two revenue generating matches a year are not enough to sustain the facility’s operating costs.”From those games we believe it is [commercially sound], but you can’t have games unless they’re sanctioned,” Kaplan said. “You can’t survive on putting on one event a year, and waiting a few weeks before the event before you even get permission to put it on. That just does not work.”Rumors have been circulating since May that the West Indies and Pakistan have agreed to play a pair of T20 matches in Florida next month following Pakistan’s scheduled ODI tour to the Caribbean, but a USACA official would not confirm that any matches have been agreed to be staged in Florida. No formal announcement has been made by the PCB or WICB either.

Former Test umpire dies aged 72

Andrew Weekes, a former Test umpire from the West Indies, died on January 21 in St. Kitts. He was 72. Weekes, who was the first international umpire from St. Kitts, stood in four Tests and three ODIs between 1983 and 1990.”He was one of the outstanding umpires in the Caribbean during the 1980s and early 1990s,” Julian Hunte, president of the WICB, said. “He did some tremendous work with the development of the game in St Kitts and also was one of the leading match officials in the Shell Shield and regional limited-overs tournaments.”He loved the game and he also dedicated a lot of time and energy to educating the people of his country. Excellence was his hallmark. For four decades he one of the leading educators on the island of St Kitts and helped to with the development of thousands of young lives. He was a true pioneer, ambassador and shining example for others to emulate.”

Tillakaratne Dilshan warmed up for the Test series against Australia with a century as most of Sri Lanka’s top-order batsmen spent some valuable time in the middle on the second day of their tour match in Canberra. After Scott Henry brought up a double-century for the Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI, who declared at 6 for 439, the Sri Lankans moved their own total on to 4 for 276 by stumps on the second day of the three-day game.Dilshan and Dimuth Karunaratne put on 105 for the opening wicket, a stand that ended when the young Western Australia spinner Ashton Turner had Karunaratne caught at mid-on for 40. Dilshan brought up his hundred shortly before tea and retired out to allow his captain Mahela Jayawardene to spend some time in the middle, along with Kumar Sangakkara.Sangakkara made 55 before becoming a rare victim of the medium-pace of Usman Khawaja, who in 60 first-class matches has only claimed one wicket, that of the bowler Chris Duval. Khawaja trapped Sangakkara lbw and Jayawardene was caught and bowled by the offspinner Glenn Maxwell for 36, before Prasanna Jayawardene (24 not out) and Dinesh Chandimal (12 not out) took the Sri Lankans to stumps without any further damage. The Chairman’s XI had started the day at 4 for 390 and they added 49 to their overnight total for the loss of two more wickets. Their resumption allowed Henry, who is yet to post a first-class century, to bring up his double-hundred, an innings that ended only when the declaration came. Dhammika Prasad picked up both wickets of the morning for the Sri Lankans, Travis Head caught for 35 and Sam Whiteman caught and bowled for 4.
