Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson reacts to Celtic win on Twitter

Liverpool star Andrew Robertson took to Twitter on Thursday night to congratulate Celtic on their last-gasp Europa League win over Lazio. The Scottish champions looked to be heading for an away draw until a sloppy pass in stoppage time saw them launch a 94th-minute sweeping counter that ended with substitute Olivier Ntcham chipping the ball into the net.And after the final whistle, Robertson was quick to pay homage to Celtic on Twitter – giving his verdict on the scoreline accompanied by an applauding emoji and the famous Celtic clover. The Glasgow-born left-back is a boyhood Celtic fan and played for their youth sides until 2009, when he made the switch to Queen’s Park. And it seems Robertson still holds allegiance to his former club, having expressed his delight with a win that has sealed Celtic’s qualification to the knockout rounds of the Europa League. Here’s a look at the Liverpool man’s message…

Liverpool fans would still have Steven Gerrard in the middle of the park

Steven Gerrard turned out for both Liverpool and Rangers during the legends match between the two historic clubs on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool ultimately ran out 3-2 winners in Glasgow as Gerrard played the final 10 minutes for the club that he now manages.

The Englishman made over 700 appearances for the Merseyside giants in all competitions before deciding to end his career in the MLS.

Just 39 years of age, Gerrard showed on Saturday that he can still get around the pitch, and his performance got a number of Liverpool fans thinking.

Indeed, there is a general feeling that central midfield is where the Reds are still light despite developing into one of the top teams in world football.

And a number of the club’s supporters have claimed that they would still take Gerrard in the centre of the midfield despite the fact that he retired in 2016.

Liverpool fans have harsh words for Loris Karius after latest mistake

[ad_pod ]

Loris Karius made a calamitous mistake for Besiktas in their Europa League clash against Slovan Bratislava on Thursday, but it hasn’t come as a surprise to some Liverpool fans.

The Anfield faithful are all too aware of the German’s costly mishaps, with many still unable to forget his errors which cost the Reds in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Despite going out on loan to Turkey last year and impressing for the most part, conceding 39 goals in 30 league games, his latest mistake has led some to hope that he never returns to Liverpool.

It is unlikely that he will too, given the form of both Alisson and Adrian since they signed for the club, with the latter making up for his error against Southampton with some fine saves since, particularly on Tuesday when he kept out Dries Mertens’ volley.

Unfortunately for Karius, it seems that he is still yet to fully recover from that 2018 final, and his rash judgement ultimately cost his on Thursday, as they ended up losing 4-2.

Tottenham attacker Erik Lamela hinders Spurs in one way according to Micky Hazard

[ad_pod ]

Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, former Tottenham Hotspur player Micky Hazard has identified the one thing Erik Lamela does that can sometimes hinder the team.

What did he say?

Well, the podcast was discussing the Argentina international following another impressive display in which he found the net against Crystal Palace on Saturday, with the conversation centering around how he is important to the team being able to press effectively.

While Hazard did acknowledge that fact and says he offers a tempo and brings some urgency, he also questioned the 27-year-old’s decision-making when it comes to that tactic as well.

The 59-year-old told the Last Word on Spurs (41:50):

“Sometimes he overdoes it. He chases from one player to the next player to the next player.

“What Lamela does sometimes is he defeats the press because he chases and follows the pass across the pitch.”

Verdict

Hazard may well be right, but it is a hard one to weigh up because Lamela probably simply wants Tottenham to re-adopt the tactics they have used so successfully over the last couple of years.

Sky Sports reported prior to the Crystal Palace clash that Spurs had pressed their opponents less than any other Premier League team so far this term, and perhaps the Argentine attacker is simply looking to encourage his teammates to do that more often.

Of course, you don’t want the 27-year-old to defeat the press by doing too much, however if he provides that spark to get the other players on his team to work that little bit harder, it could actually be a blessing in disguise.

Lamela will be hoping he can keep his spot in the XI for the sixth successive match in 2019/20 when the north London outfit face Olympiacos in the Champions League on Wednesday.

West Ham: Could make move for Chuba Akpom

West Ham United could make a move for PAOK Salonika striker Chuba Akpom, according to The Daily Mail.

The Hammers have reportedly been keeping an eye on the former Arsenal man since his move to Greece, where he helped his club win the league for the first time in 34 years.

West Ham have let Marko Arnautovic, Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez leave permanently this summer, as well as loaning out Jordan Hugill, meaning they are in the hunt for another option upfront despite the signing of Sebastien Haller.

Akpom played 33 games in all competitions for the Greek champions last season, scoring eight goals and assisting five times, as per Transfermarkt.

The 23-year-old also showed what he can do in front of goal in pre-season, as he notched four in a 5-1 win against Fortuna Sittard – the best of the bunch saw him receive the ball on the edge of the box, turn and touch it away from the onrushing defender before convincingly firing into the bottom corner.

His dribbling is cited as being very strong on WhoScored, while holding onto the ball and defensive contributions are also strengths, though aerial duels and offside awareness are weaknesses.

In comparison, Javier Hernandez played 28 games for West Ham last season, scoring eight goals and assisting three times.

His finishing and headed attempts are put down as his strengths on WhoScored, while offside awareness and aerial duels are weaknesses.

This suggests that while ‘Chicharito’ can contribute to goals with more regularity, it is Akpom who can have a greater impact on the wider game. With Haller already through the door at club-record expense, perhaps a more expansive option could help supplement him better.

This move may be seen as somewhat left-field by some considering he wasn’t able to forge much of a chance for himself in England before, but this could be a fairly cheap signing for West Ham, who have already spent big bucks on a striker this summer.

He’s reportedly valued at £5m and, at 23, does have time to grow after a strong season out in Greece.

West Brom Transfer Roundup: Rondon bid rejected, approach made for Dawson, Harper update

[ad_pod ]

Slaven Bilic will surely be continuing to work tirelessly at West Brom as he gets to grips with his new squad. Thursday’s Baggies transfer roundup includes a rejected bid for a star striker, an approach for a top defender and a boost in regards to a 19-year-old midfielder.

West Brom reject Rondon bid

Mexican outlet Medio Tiempo is reporting that West Brom have rejected a bid from Newcastle for Venezuelan Salomon Rondon. The 29-year-old, who spent last season on loan at St. James Park, was the subject of a €12m (£10.7m) bid, but the Baggies turned it down.

Dawson approach rejected

According to the Daily Mail, West Brom have rejected an approach from Watford for 29-year-old defender Craig Dawson. Dawson made 45 appearances for the Baggies last season, scoring three goals.

Harper edges towards new Baggies deal

West Brom are moving ever closer to getting Rekeem Harper to commit his future to them, according to Birmingham Live. Italian giants Juventus and Premier League pair Liverpool and Tottenham were reported to be amongst the clubs interested in the player, but West Brom are now optimistic he will stay at the Hawthorns.

Opinion: West Ham have lost potential future gaffer as Jack Collison resigns

[ad_pod ]

Thursday was a busy day for Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham United with the fixtures for the 2019/2020 Premier League season being announced.

However, the club also made another announcement on the day which rather slipped under the radar with most of the attention on next campaign’s schedule.

They confirmed in the mid-afternoon that Academy coach Jack Collison had stepped down from his role and left the London Stadium with immediate effect.

The news came right out the blue taking most associated with West Ham by surprise and leaving many members of the Claret & Blue Army disappointed.

And fans were right to be upset by the development as their team had just lost a potential future manager, the first homegrown gaffer of the modern era.

While the official report stated that Collison has left with his family to take up an exciting new coaching opportunity overseas, the BBC revealed that the role is with Major League Soccer outfit Atlanta United in the USA.

The 30-year-old is heavily associated with the Hammers as a product of the famous Academy of Football who graduated into the first team under Alan Curbishley in 2008.

Constantly battling with injuries, Collison would go onto make 121 appearances in central midfield in Claret & Blue, scoring 14 times and assisting on ten occasions.

He was always a fan favourite at the Boleyn Ground, capturing the hearts of fans when he still played in a home London derby against Millwall just days after his father had tragically died in a road accident.

But following the midfielder leaving east London in 2014, injuries eventually took their toll and the persistence was too much for him – he was forced to retire at just 27 whilst with Peterborough United.

Collison was soon offered a role in the Irons academy at Chadwell Heath as an Academy coach, first working as manager of the under-16 side.

In two years, he was able to earn a promotion and start progressing up the ranks as he had done as a young player, ending up as co-manager of the under-18s alongside Mark Philips.

Most recently, the duo led the bright team to a fantastic 2018/2019 campaign in which they so nearly broke into the top six of the Premier League U18 having started off with four consecutive wins.

Whilst it’s nice to see Kevin Keen back at the club replacing Collison as Under 18 coach, one can’t help but feeling what could have been with Collison.

The ex-Welsh international possesses all the right qualities to be a superb West Ham manager, as he’s well-liked around the club and knows it inside-out as one of its sons.

And all the signs were right for the former midfielder to one day, maybe in the near future, take the top job and make the move from Chadwell Heath to Rush Green training ground in Romford.

As someone who knows all too well what football can give you and how quickly it can all be taken away, he would have been a great man-motivator, installing a wonderful philosophy in the first team.

There can be little doubt that Collison would have been given a fond farewell and send off from everyone in east London, but perhaps many of those figures were thinking they should have tried that bit harder to get him stay as he could well be seen as the one that got away in a couple of years’ time.
