Rangers: No option to buy Aaron Ramsey

Rangers haven’t agreed an option to buy Aaron Ramsey at the end of his loan spell from Juventus, according to The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell says.

The lowdown

The Gers managed to pull off what Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie called an ‘extraordinary signing’ on the final day of the January transfer window, bringing in the Wales midfielder until the end of the season.

He became their fourth addition of the month, joining centre-back James Sands, right winger Amad Diallo and right-back Mateusz Zukowski.

The 31-year-old has 16 months left on his Juventus contract and is presently valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt.

The latest

In the comments of an article Campbell wrote for The Athletic on Rangers’ deadline day swoop for Ramsey, he was asked whether the loan agreement included a potential permanent option.

The journalist succinctly replied: “No option I’m told. Wages would be prohibitive.”

The verdict

Rangers have managed to agree a wage split with Juventus which, according to Ross Wilson, preserves their existing structure, but it appears that they would be unable to foot the entirety of the Welshman’s salary in the long-term.

That’s no surprise considering that Ramsey is thought to be on £400,000 per week at Juventus, while the Gers’ top-earner at present is reportedly £33,000-per-week Alfredo Morelos.

The signing has had many figures connected to Rangers buzzing with glee, with Ally McCoist telling talkSPORT that he’s ‘really excited’ and declaring it the club’s biggest deal for more than 25 years.

However, it looks as if Ramsey’s stay will be fleeting, unless he agrees to an enormous wage reduction to remain at Ibrox beyond the summer.

In other news, many Gers fans were buzzing over this deadline day transfer update

Rangers transfer news on Ramsey

Gianluca Di Marzio has now dropped some exciting Glasgow Rangers transfer news on Aaron Ramsey.

The Lowdown: Not playing

Ramsey is simply not playing enough games at Juventus, with only five appearances in total for the Old Lady across all competitions so far this term.

Thus, given his whopping £400,000-per-week wages, Juve will probably want to offload him before the deadline, especially as they spent a lot of money to bring in Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina.

The Latest: Agreement sought

As per Italian football journalist and transfer expert Di Marzio, an ‘agreement is sought’ between Juve and the Ibrox faithful, with talks ‘in progress’ between the two clubs:

“#Juventus, negotiation in progress with @RangersFC: an agreement is sought for #Ramsey.

“But the @BurnleyOfficial resists.”

The Verdict: Exciting

To get a player of Ramsey’s calibre through the door would certainly be exciting for all Teddy Bears fans.

Of course, he is a big name, having played in the Premier League with Arsenal, while he has over 70 senior caps for Wales.

His wages will be a big issue though, and the Light Blues will have to negotiate very well to get that number down.

He also has a history of injury problems, which the Gers will hope that he can overcome.

Nonetheless, what a statement signing he would be for RFC, having already captured the loan signing of Amad Diallo from Manchester United.

Newcastle: Craig Hope makes CEO claim

A big claim has been made regarding Newcastle United’s plans to make crucial behind-the-scenes appointments…

What’s the talk?

Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope has claimed that the club are expecting a wealth of options to emerge as candidates to take over as CEO at St James’ Park. The Magpies will look to make an appointment in that position before moving on to the director of football.

He tweeted: “Word from NUFC last week was that CEO will probably come before DoF. They’re expecting to be inundated with applications for CEO position. DoF they are working through their targets, Michael Emenalo being one.”

Fans will be delighted

Newcastle fans will surely be delighted with this big claim from Hope regarding the CEO role. The club’s belief that they will be ‘inundated’ with candidates will leave fans buzzing as it suggests that they could bring in a quality operator to run proceedings and make big decisions.

From pure mathematics, the Magpies are more likely to find a brilliant option to take the job if they are brimming with candidates in comparison to if they had minimal interest in the role. Therefore, supporters may take solace in the fact that they are expecting a plethora of names to be in the mix, as it could lead to a successful appointment further down the line.

This is a crucial decision as that person would then be making huge decisions for the club on a daily basis, and fans will surely want the best possible candidate for the job. This could include a call on who the new director of football will be, which could be a gigantic move by the club, given that the successful candidate will be in control of football operations on Tyneside.

We previously published an article explaining why Michael Emenalo could be a good choice. However, it could come down to whoever the new CEO prefers, and that is why the initial appointment of one is massive for PIF as it could then impact where they go from a footballing perspective.

This is why Magpies fans will surely be delighted to read that they are preparing for a vast array of candidates to apply for the job, as it could give Amanda Staveley a great problem to deal with – picking the best one to lead Newcastle forward.

Swann moves to No.3 in rankings

Graeme Swann has crowned a remarkable year, in which he has taken 54 wickets in 11 games, by rocketing to No. 3 in the world rankings, ahead of Muttiah Muralitharan

Cricinfo staff31-Dec-2009Graeme Swann has crowned a remarkable year, in which he has taken 54 wickets in 12 games, by rocketing to No.3 in the world rankings, ahead of Muttiah Muralitharan. His man-of-the-match performance at Kingsmead, where he completed match-figures of 9 for 164, earned him an eight-place jump to the number-three spot, the highest of any England bowler since Steve Harmison was crowned No.1 in August 2004.Stuart Broad, who partnered Swann to condemn South Africa to defeat in Durban with 4 for 43 in the second innings, also gains, up six places to No.7 in the bowling rankings. Not surprisingly, the picture isn’t as rosy for most of South Africa’s bowlers. Under-pressure Makhaya Ntini has slipped four places to eight, after failing to take a wicket in the match while Paul Harris has dropped five places, out of the top ten, to No.12.On a more positive note, Morne Morkel, who has been the biggest threat for South Africa in the series, has gained six places and now sits in 24th position. Dale Steyn has managed to cling on to No.1 spot although he is under pressure from Mitchell Johnson, after Steyn’s mediocre return from injury in Durban. As far as the batting rankings are concerned, Andrew Strauss’s 49-ball 50 has helped him gain four places to joint-13th position, level with Rahul Dravid and AB de Villiers, who drops one place. For a full list of the rankings click here.

Disrupted West Indies aim high

It’s tradition for touring teams to arrive in Australia saying they can beat the hosts and David Williams has joined the list

Peter English14-Nov-2009It’s tradition for touring teams to arrive in Australia saying they can beat the hosts and David Williams, the West Indies coach, has joined the list. This summer the Australian team should be vulnerable after losing the Ashes to mid-table England and watching their ranking fall to No. 4, but it’s unlikely this Caribbean outfit can offer anything more than intermittent surges following a tumultuous year of strikes and poor performances.Williams and Joel Garner, the manager, are two reminders of the great West Indies sides of the 1980s and early 1990s that turned up to bruise and beat the Australians. Chris Gayle’s unit will be more challenging in the limited-overs matches when they return early next year.In West Indies’ past 48 Tests they have only four wins and this squad is a blend of the experienced players who went on a strike and a couple of their replacements who were part of the series defeat to Bangladesh in July. Even though they have Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, it will be a surprise if the tourists can improve on any of their results here since their last series win in 1992-93. In the next three visits they won two games, but lost their past eight.Williams, who has the coaching job full-time following the dismissal of John Dyson in September, believes his side must fire early to trouble the hosts. “If we play to our full potential we have a good chance of beating Australia,” he said. “In the recent past they haven’t played very well at home, particularly in the first match, and I think there’s an opportunity we can capitalise on.”Australia did struggle in the first innings against New Zealand last year and went on to lose 2-1 to South Africa later in the summer, but the Gabba has been a fortress since they were last beaten in Brisbane, by West Indies in 1988. Williams was in the squad for that trip and also played two Tests during the next successful tour in 1992-93. However, Australia are undefeated in their past 20 Tests in Queensland, including 15 victories.”If we can hit our straps running and get them on the back foot, you never know, we could sneak that first Test and go on to win the series,” Williams said. “It’s going to take hard work, they are the No. 1 team. We believe we can win if we can play to our potential.”The sentiment is the same from Gayle. “Every team is beatable,” he said. “We know the task won’t be easy. To beat Australia you have to be on cue from ball one. Batting is going to be very important, and our overall cricket has to be good to beat the No. 1 team.”Team unity will also be essential and Williams, Gayle and Garner have more to worry about than the Australians on this trip following the long-running disputes between the team and the board. “We have got to stick together, the team is very important,” Williams said. “We have to work extremely hard to keep that intact.”The West Indians have a four-day warm-up match against Queensland starting on Wednesday and Williams intends to play his best side in preparation for the opening Test on November 26. He likes the look of the fresh faces Adrian Barath, Travis Dowlin, and Ravi Rampaul, who is back after injury, in the 15-man outfit.”And Kemar Roach has got some pace and is someone we believe can carry West Indies cricket for a long time,” he said. “Gavin Tonge is also a force to be reckoned with, he can move the ball and we’re looking to him to continue to improve.” However, the senior players must also be at their best if the tips of Williams and Gayle are to come true.

Tottenham: Three possible January exits

Dele Alli is among three players who could leave Tottenham Hotspur in January, according to Alasdair Gold for Football London.

The lowdown

Spurs generated just £29.43m from sales during the summer against their £60.21m spend (via Transfermarkt), so in theory, offloading more players in January could generate funds for new manager Antonio Conte to put his stamp on the squad through recruitment.

Dele started Spurs’ first six matches of the new season under Nuno Espirito Santo but hasn’t been named in a Premier League XI since.

The latest

In a Football London Q&A on Monday, Gold namechecked £27m-rated midfielder Dele as he identified players who could be transferred out in the New Year. Harry Winks (valued at £18m by Transfermarkt) and Joe Rodon (£9m) were also tipped for potential mid-season exits, although Gold added that the Wales defender could leave on loan rathe than permanently.

In response to a question on potential January outgoings, the journalist replied: “It depends what the situation is in a month’s time for certain players.

“For instance, if the current situation does not change and there are no injuries in the centre of the park, I’d be surprised if Harry Winks does not want to leave for regular football. The same goes for Joe Rodon, who is not getting the minutes at centre-back in the Premier League.

“There is also the Dele Alli situation and whether Conte sees him as part of his plans going forward and exactly where he fits. He was seven minutes away from making it a hat-trick of half-time substitutions under the past three Spurs head coaches.”

The verdict

Spurs have to beat Group G leaders Rennes in the final round of fixtures to guarantee progression in the Europa Conference League. If they go out of that competition, then there’ll be fewer opportunities, and a reduced need, for the players mentioned by Gold.

Conte is said to have some pretty ambitious plans for January, with one report even mooting a double swoop for Matthijs de Ligt and Stefan de Vrij, and Spurs may need to be ruthless with their squad players for his vision to be realised.
