LFC fans delighted after government update

A number of Liverpool fans are delighted after the government announced stadiums will be at full capacity for the start of next season.

The Reds had a forgettable 2020/21 campaign for many reasons, with injuries ravaging the squad and their title defence fizzling out in the New Year.

One of the worst aspects of the whole season was having to play in front of empty stadiums, however, leading to lifeless atmospheres.

While every team suffered from having no fans cheering them on, Anfield’s renowned influence on Liverpool arguably made it particularly tough for them.

On Monday, however, the government confirmed that the lifting of restrictions on July 19th would mean grounds can be full again from August, acting as a huge boost.

It is sure to be an emotional day when the Reds host Burnley in their first home Premier League game of next season, as many thousands of supporters finally return to Anfield.

BRISBANE – Australia’s cricketers will play in Sri Lanka next month eventhough three New Zealanders have withdrawn from the Champions Trophy forsafety reasons.Craig McMillan, Matthew Horne and Brooke Walker were today left out ofthe New Zealand squad after making themselves unavailable for theInternational Cricket Council’s one-day tournament. The trio were part of the New Zealand squad which abandoned its tour ofPakistan in May when a bomb blast outside its Karachi team hotel killed14 people.”I don’t want to go into specifics and I’ve not needed counselling but… I didn’t think I was mentally ready to cope,” McMillan told NZPA.”It is only sport after all.”But the Australian Cricket Board, which cancelled its October Test tourof Pakistan last Friday, is satisfied with the security arrangements inSri Lanka. An ACB spokesman said the 14 players selected for the Champions Trophyfrom September 12-29 had not expressed any concerns about playing in SriLanka.Australian Cricketers’ Association chief executive Tim May said the NewZealand players would have taken a different view than the Australiansafter their Karachi experiences.”There is a clear differentiation with matters to be considered forAustralian players and New Zealand players,” May said.”They might be trying to manage a trauma of the past and, from ourperspective, we haven’t experienced any of those traumas first hand.”We have gone through an identical process for every tour where weassess security risks and we are quite satisfied with the security thatwill be offered to the players in Sri Lanka.”New Zealand Cricket chief executive Martin Snedden said the Black Capswere not placed under any pressure to tour Sri Lanka.New Zealand cricket has experienced security problems in Sri Lanka, withtours in 1987 and 1992 disrupted by bomb blasts, while there was civilunrest in Colombo during the Black Caps’ latest tour last year.”It is accepted that when travelling overseas we cannot make anyabsolute guarantees about safety,” Snedden told NZPA.”When deciding whether to attend the tournament the safety of the teamwas our top priority.”We made a thorough assessment of risks to the team which includedspeaking to government agencies and a visit to Sri Lanka by team managerJeff Crowe and security adviser Reg Dickason, to speak to American,British and Australian Foreign Affairs staff and to check securityarrangements.”We have been advised that a ceasefire has been in place in Sri Lankasince February and the country is the most stable it has been for sometime.”Snedden said New Zealand Cricket accepted the decisions of McMillan,Walker and Horne.

QPR interested in George Cox

Queens Park Rangers are interested in a deal to bring George Cox to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by West London Sport, who claim that Mark Warburton’s side are looking to complete a deal to sign the Fortuna Sittard left-back in the summer transfer window.

The report goes on to state that the 58-year-old QPR manager is hoping to add both a left and a right-back to his current options at the club, while Todd Kane being informed he is free to leave the club this summer.

Better than Wallace

Having originally joined Fortuna Sittard from Brighton & Hove Albion on what was originally a season-long loan deal back in the summer of 2019, the Eredivisie side went on to make Cox a permanent signing last year, with the Dutch side paying what now looks to be an extremely cheap £45k transfer fee for the 23-year-old.

Indeed, the left-back impressed over his 21 league appearances in his first season with Sjors Ultee’s side, helping his side keep five clean sheets, as well as making an average of 2.2 interceptions, 1.9 tackles and winning 4.7 duels per game.

These metrics saw the £900k-rated defender earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.73, ranking him as the club’s eighth-best performer in the top division of Dutch football.

However, following his permanent move last summer, Cox very much appears to have taken his game to the next level in the Netherlands, scoring five goals, registering five assists and creating six big chances over his 33 Eredivisie fixtures last season, as well as making an average of 0.9 key passes per game.

The left-back also was extremely solid in defence yet again, helping Fortuna keep three clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 2.4 interceptions, 1.8 tackles and making 2.3 clearances per game, with these returns culminating in an average SofaScore match rating of 6.98, ranking him as Ultee’s fourth-best player in the league.

For comparison, Liam Wallace, QPR’s first-choice left-back last season, scored one goal, registered three assists and created six big chances over his 27 Championship appearances in 2020/21, as well as making an average of 0.7 interceptions, 1.5 tackles and winning 3.7 duels per game.

These metrics saw the 33-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.87, ranking him as Warburton’s ninth-best performer in the second tier of English football.

So, while Wallace by no means had a bad campaign for the Rs last time out, Cox bettered the defender’s returns in almost every aspect, leading us to believe that the 58-year-old should do everything he can to get a deal over the line for the 23-year-old this summer, as he would very much seem to be yet another promising young player who could end up on the west London side’s books.

Liverpool fans excited after Neuhaus update

A number of Liverpool supporters are hugely excited after an update was provided on the Reds’ quest to sign Florian Neuhaus this summer.

Jurgen Klopp will be on the lookout for new signings in the coming weeks, as he aims to perfect his squad heading into next season.

Liverpool no longer have the reliable Gini Wijnaldum to call upon, so it may be that a replacement comes in during the summer transfer window.

One player who has has been linked with the Reds in the past is Borussia Monchengladbach star Neuhaus, who is currently on Euro 2020 duty with Germany.

A fresh update has now been provided, with journalist Florian Plettenburg taking to Twitter to claim that Klopp ‘wants’ to sign the 24-year-old, with talks taking place in recent days.

David Lynch has also backed the reports of Klopp’s interest in the player.

Dale and Newell turn the screw on Glamorgan

Adrian Dale cracked the first double-century of the CricInfo Championship season as Glamorgan turned the screw against their fellow first division newcomers Northamptonshire. The Welsh county had dominated proceedings on the opening day, and continued in the same vein as their overnight 339-4 became 548-6 declared. Dale hit 204 in six hours, featuring 31 boundaries, and posted a record-breaking 248 for the fifth wicket with Keith Newell (103).Northants’ reply then ran into trouble and they struggled to 181-5 from 50 overs at the close, still needing a further 218 to avoid the follow-on with two days remaining.Dale joined Maurice Turnbull, Roy Fredericks and Steve James in the ranks of Glamorgan’s double-centurions against Northants, and also passed 10,000 first-class runs in the course of his 276-ball knock.Newell proved an admirable foil for his acting-captain and completed his first Championship hundred since joining the Welsh county from Sussex two years ago. He and Dale eclipsed Glamorgan’s previous fifth-wicket best against the Midlanders – 206 by Bernard Hedges and Jim Pressdee at Northampton in 1961 – before Jason Brown broke through, yorking Dale.Mike Hussey’s throw from backward point ran out Newell to end his stay of four hours 40 minutes, including 16 fours, and the declaration came soon afterwards.Northants then lost the wickets of Hussey, Mal Loye and Jeff Cook for 53 before tea, and with Robert Croft removing the Swann brothers in the final session it was left to Russell Warren (72 not out) to keep the home side afloat.

South Africa clinch series against Kiwis

Port Elizabeth (South Africa), Dec 4: South Africa clinched the series againstNew Zealand on Monday with a seven-wicket win on the fifth day of the secondTest at St George’s Park

05-Dec-2000Port Elizabeth (South Africa), Dec 4: South Africa clinched the series againstNew Zealand on Monday with a seven-wicket win on the fifth day of the secondTest at St George’s Park.Opening batsman Gary Kirsten shepherded South Africa to their second win of thethree-match series, making 47 not out after South Africa had been set a smalltarget of 86.As in the first Test, which South Africa won by five wickets, the New Zealandbowlers and fielders showed spirit in defending a small target. After dismissing Boeta Dippenaar on Sunday, they claimed the wickets of JacquesKallis (26) and Daryll Cullinan (11) before conceding defeat.Kallis struck five boundaries and was looking in good form until he top-edged ahook against Martin and was caught at deep backward square-leg.Cullinan drove at an inswinger from Walmsley and was bowled between bat and pad.The third Test starts in Johannesburg on Friday.South African fast bowler Allan Donald is a doubtful starter for the final Testbecause of a stomach muscle injury. Mfuneko Ngam, 21, from Eastern Province, ison standby and is likely to win a first cap.South African physiotherapist Craig Smith said Donald would not play if therewere any signs of the injury on the day before the game.New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming blamed “a disastrous session” on the fourthday for his side’s defeat.New Zealand, 63 behind on first innings, never recovered after losing fourwickets in six overs.”It turned horribly wrong after lunch on Sunday,” said Fleming. “It was adisastrous session that cost us the match. It was poor batsmanship and pooroption taking.”Any plans we had of extending the game were thrown out of the window. If we hadput another 150 on the board it would have been a bloody good game. We missedthe boat.”Fleming also pinned part of the blame for the series defeat on New Zealand’slengthy injury list which has claimed all-rounder Chris Cairns, left-arm spinnerDaniel Vettori and fast bowler Dion Nash.”With Cairns, Vettori and Nash you can have sessions like that and still winmatches,” Fleming said. But he said he was pleased with the progress made by young bowlers like ChrisMartin, Brooke Walker and Kerry Walmsley, who had come in for injured bowlers.South Africa captain Shaun Pollock said there had been two turning points forhis side.”Obviously, one of them was to to be seven down (in the first innings) and 90behind and to turn that round into a 60-run lead.”Then there was the way we bowled in the middle session yesterday. The pitchwasn’t doing too much and to pick up four quick wickets turned the game on itshead and set up the victory for us,” said Pollock. The South African captain, after his first Test series win since taking overfrom the sacked Hansie Cronje in April, paid tribute to a fighting performancein which South Africa had struggled in the first innings.”It’s great to have wrapped it up in the second Test. It was a big effort tobowl New Zealand out in the second innings,” he said.Pollock said the match had been evenly poised before a 136-run eighth wicketstand between Man-of-the-Match Neil McKenzie and Nicky Boje enabled South Africato take a 63-run first innings lead.

Kabak could miss LFC’s clash with Man Utd

Ozan Kabak looks increasingly likely to miss Liverpool’s crucial Premier League clash with Manchester United, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce.

The Lowdown: Liverpool’s centre-back issues continue

The Reds have suffered a season to forget, failing to defend their league title and potentially also missing out on a top four finish.

Arguably the biggest reason for Liverpool’s struggles has been lengthy injuries to centre-backs, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip already missing for many months.

On top of that, Kabak and Ben Davies, the Reds’ two defensive signings in the January transfer window, missed Saturday’s 2-0 win at home to Southampton.

The Latest: Kabak likely to miss Man United clash

Writing on Monday, Pearce admitted that Kabak was ‘highly unlikely’ to be fit for Thursday’s trip to Old Trafford, which could be pivotal in the race for Champions League football for the visitors.

A ‘muscle problem’ is keeping the 21-year-old on the sidelines at a crucial point in the season, only adding to Liverpool’s woes. The injury comes at an inopportune time for Kabak and the Reds, with the 21-year-old giving a strong performance against Newcastle recently as he continues growing into his role at Anfield.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/all-the-latest-liverpool-news/” title=”All the latest Liverpool news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Fabinho back in defence?

Pearce mentioned that Kabak’s absence could mean that Fabinho reverts to the centre-back role in which he has played in 21 times this season, according to WhoScored.

While this a far from ideal scenario for such a big game, the thought of the hugely inexperienced Rhys Williams coming up against United’s dangerous attack doesn’t bear consideration. He was handed just a five out of 10 rating by This Is Anfield against Saints, whose form in 2021 has been miserable, to say the least.

There is enough midfield depth to be able to make up for Fabinho not being there, with Thiago, Gini Wijnaldum and one other player starting the match.

James Milner’s experience and leadership arguably makes him favourite to come in, especially given his clear dislike for United, while Jurgen Klopp could play all four attackers in a 4-2-3-1 formation, if he is feeling bold.

In other news, Liverpool have received a big boost in their efforts to sign a Premier League player this summer. Find out who it is here.

West Ham have hit jackpot with Coufal

A lot of West Ham United’s success on the pitch this season has to be attributed to their moves in the transfer market.

The Irons narrowly avoided relegation with one game to go last season after David Moyes was employed to pull off a great escape.

Things are vastly different now – the East London outfit occupies fifth place in the Premier League, just three points behind Chelsea in the race for a place in the Champions League.

This drastic turnaround has been down to Moyes, of course, but GSB deserve plenty of credit too as they provided him with several new signings and did so again in January, clinching the sensational Jesse Lingard on loan.

There was uproar when the club sold Grady Diangana and the lack of a replacement for Sebastian Haller hasn’t been ideal, though still, it’s their backing that has contributed to the fruitful returns of this campaign.

One name signed in the summer has arguably been one of their player’s of the season – Vladimir Coufal.

West Ham defeated Burnley on Monday Night Football earlier this week, and the Czech Republic right-back left Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher in awe (4th May, 22:24pm).

“I think he’s been one of the signings of the season,” claimed the former Liverpool centre-back. “We talk about [Tomas] Soucek, but Coufal whether it’s right wing-back or right full-back at different times, he’s just one of those players that’s 7/10 minimum every time you watch him play. He’s the type of player you’d love to play with him. A manager’s dream, never injured, he’s there week in week out.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-and-the-latest-gossip-moyes-gsb-london-stadium” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and more!”]

Indeed, the 13-cap international has been a revelation along that right-flank – immensely contributing in a defensive nature, as well as getting up the pitch to be a tricky threat with his crosses into the box.

As per WhoScored, Coufal ranks amongst the Hammers’ five best performers with an average rating of 6.97. Only the likes of Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek, Michail Antonio and Lingard are above him currently.

The 28-year-old brute tops the charts for tackles per game (2.4) and isn’t too far behind his teammates for interceptions per game (1.3) either, which only emphasises just how solid he’s been at the back.

Further ahead, Coufal has delivered a whopping six assists from right-back, a feat only bettered by Aaron Cresswell (seven). The same goes for key passes per game, too, with the former Slavia Prague man just 0.1 behind the Englishman in terms of creativity, via WhoScored.

It is no wonder Moyes dubbed his summer signing “unbelievable” back in February.

Considering Coufal cost the club just £5.5m and is only earning around £35k-per-week at the London Stadium, the industrious beast has been a revelation and a massive bargain for the Irons.

Now valued at €20m (£18m) by CIES Football Observatory, you would have to argue that the Czech gem has been one of West Ham’s, if not the Premier League’s, top stars this term.

The Hammers have certainly hit the jackpot and are in dreamland here. You won’t find better value for money than what they have achieved with Coufal.
