Breetzke blitz carries Northamptonshire into quarter-finals

Lancashire’s hefty target overhauled despite Dockrell 45

ECB Reporters Network19-Jul-2024Matthew Breetzke’s thunderous 31-ball 76 helped Northamptonshire Steelbacks secure a home quarter-final in the Vitality Blast by beating Lancashire Lightning by four wickets at Emirates Old Trafford. It was the visitors’ first T20 victory on this ground in eight attempts but no one could doubt that it was thoroughly deserved.Reply to the home side’s 210 for nine, in which Jack White took three for 16, the Steelbacks sealed their win with eight balls to spare, the visitors surviving a late tumble of wickets before Ashton Agar’s six off Liam Livingstone settled matters.Lancashire scored 54 runs in their Powerplay overs but lost three wickets in doing so, all of them falling to White. Luke Wells was caught at deep square leg by Breetzke for 10, Phil Salt holed out to David Willey at mid-off for nine and, after whacking four fours and a six in his 12-ball 24, Keaton Jennings skied a return catch to the bowler.Livingstone and Matty Hurst then launched an effective counter-attack, Livingstone hitting three sixes in his first 18 balls and Lightning reached the midpoint of their 20-over allotment on 93 for three. But the T20 England international’s fun was ended by Freddie Heldreich, who had him caught at deep midwicket by Ricardo Vasconcelos for 36 and Hurst followed in the next over, caught at deep backward square leg by Ben Sanderson off Ravi Bopara for 30.However, Lancashire were still well placed on 115 for five when that wicket fell and their momentum was maintained by George Dockrell and Steven Croft, the latter passing 5,000 T20 runs for the Red Rose when he reached five. The pair put on 44 in 23 balls before Croft skied Willey to Bopara and both Chris Green and Tom Hartley soon fell in successive overs to leave Dockrell and Luke Wood to ensure Lancashire set a formidable target. The Irish international gave Vasconcelos his second catch and Sanderson his second wicket when five short of his fifty but the home side’s 201 for nine looked more than competitive, albeit on a good batting wicket.White was the most successful Steelbacks bowler with three for 16. Willey and Sanderson collected two apiece and Bopara took one for 26 from his three useful overs.Northamptonshire’s pursuit of their target in a manner that was alternately orthodox and inventive but which put all Lancashire’s bowlers to the sword. Vasconcelos and Breetzke hit 13 fours and two sixes in their Powerplay overs, at the end of which Northamptonshire were 85 without loss and perfectly placed to secure their vital victory.Breetzke reached his fifty off 19 balls with seven fours and two sixes, an astonishing display of calculated hitting that helped ensure the visitors’ hundred came up in the eighth over, Two balls later, though, Vasconcelos was caught at the third attempt by Matty Hurst at short third man for 36 off Wells to end his 102 stand with Breetzke. And Wells struck again in his next over when he removed Breetzke, who pulled him to Green at deep midwicket after making 76 off 31 balls with seven fours and five sixes. Saif Zaib then fell lbw to Livingstone for four but Bopara and Willey’s shrewd 59-run stand took Northamptonshire to within 13 runs of their goal. The skipper was caught by Croft off Dockrell for 26 and Bopara fell lbw to Mahmood for 36 but Agar and Gus Miller saw their side home. Wells finished with two for 23.

Aston Villa advance to sign £12k-p/w star who can play in four positions

Aston Villa may have an element of uncertainty hanging over them this window, but that hasn’t stopped Unai Emery pushing hard to sign a talented midfielder from the continent.

Aston Villa could be forced to sell before they can buy

By now, most Premier League fans will be aware that Aston Villa run the risk of being penalised in line with Profit and Sustainability Rules if they don’t manage to sell some players before the June 30th deadline.

In turn, a host of stars have been linked with moves away from the club. Morgan Rogers is said to be a £100 million target for Arsenal and isn’t the only player being lined up by circling sides.

Nevertheless, Emiliano Martinez is one of the most likely candidates to be sacrificed and could ease pressure on offloading the likes of Rodgers this summer. The Argentina international is being courted by Manchester United and several Saudi Pro League teams.

Planning for the future without their long-serving number one, Aston Villa could look to sign LOSC Lille’s Lucas Chevalier, giving an indication of the one-in-one-out policy that could be adopted in the West Midlands to carefully navigate their delicate situation.

Losing out on a Champions League slot has created an unwanted PSR shortfall, but that isn’t something that can’t be fixed with savvy decision-making.

Aston Villa now ready to offer major deal to sign £50m Mozambique winger

ByTom Cunningham Jun 4, 2025

Leon Bailey could net £25 million if he is sold to Neom SC and Jhon Duran’s big-money sale earlier this year could create some wiggle room later down the line, so who could Aston Villa buy in that case?

If recent developments are anything to go by, Emery is willing to take a major step towards improving his midfield, with the added caveat that his latest target can play in several different positions.

Aston Villa make first move to sign Fares Chaibi from Eintracht Frankfurt

According to reports in Italy via Frankfurter Rundschau, Aston Villa have taken concrete steps to sign Fares Chaibi from Eintracht Frankfurt and the Bundesliga outfit may consider a sale under the right circumstances.

The 20-year-old is predominantly an attacking midfielder, but he can also feature on either flank or through the middle as a centre-forward when needed.

Earning a modest £12,968 per week in Germany, roughly speaking, Chaibi has registered two goals and three assists in 38 appearances across all competitions this season.

Making their first move, Aston Villa believe the Algeria international has the talent to become a special player at Villa Park, and they are now trying to push a deal over the line.

Moving back to matters previously mentioned, this swoop may be contingent on whether they can come out the other side of the PSR deadline unscathed, so it remains to be seen whether they can force this one through.

Everton enter race to sign England full-back who can play on both flanks

Everton are believed to have entered the race to complete the signing of a relegated Premier League player in the summer transfer window.

Moyes pushing for new Everton signings

The Blues continue to be linked with new signings on a daily basis, with David Moyes knowing the importance of bringing guaranteed quality to the club this summer. One such figure is reportedly Fenerbahce ace Oguz Aydin, with the 24-year-old winger enjoying a strong 2024/25 season with the Turkish giants, bagging 10 goal contributions (seven goals and three assists) in 18 Super Lig starts.

VfB Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade has emerged as arguably one of Everton’s more exciting rumoured transfer targets, especially as the likes of Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are also eyeing him up. A tally of 12 goals in 17 Bundesliga starts in 2024/25 sums up why he is such a sought-after attacking player, having recently broken into the Germany set-up.

Jarrad Branthwaite isn’t guaranteed to remain a Blues player beyond the summer window, so a top-quality replacement needs to be looked at, and Burnley’s Maxime Esteve has been talked about as a potential successor. He enjoyed a fantastic campaign with the Clarets, playing a huge part in them conceding just 16 goals in their 46 Championship matches.

Everton enter race to sign Premier League defender

According to a fresh claim from Football Insider, Everton are interested in signing Southampton right-back Kyle Walker-Peters ahead of next season. The Blues are “among the clubs joining the race” to snap up the 28-year-old, who will no doubt be keen to stay in the Premier League, following Saints’ relegation to the Championship. West Ham and Fulham are named as suitors, too.

Walker-Peters looks like an ideal option for Everton this summer, with the Englishman now a proven Premier League player who can thrive as both a right-back and a left-back. He would come straight in as a key starter, replacing Ashley Young, and it would be a surprise if he looked out of his depth, having matured into such a reliable performer, being lauded by journalist Adam Blackmore in the past.

“I wonder how important he’s become. You look at what happened in the summer [rumoured transfer interest] and you just wonder by the end of the season how important keeping him will have been. He’s such an integral part of what they’re doing. It’s almost like the team is built around him to get the most out of him.”

At 28, Walker-Peters isn’t past his best, so there wouldn’t be that risk with Everton signing him, and there is no reason why he can’t be an important player for Moyes for the next four or five years.

The Lilywhites face this year’s fairy-tale overachievers Bodo/Glimt in the Europa semi-finals, a side nobody expected to get this far, and Postecoglou’s men are the overwhelming favourites to reach this year’s final in Bilbao.

However, even in the event that Postecoglou keeps good on his promise by winning a major trophy during his second season in charge, something he confidently predicted right at the start of 2024/2025, Spurs’ torrid domestic form and lack of backing from fans could mean he still parts company.

Levy has the likes of Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, Fulham’s Marco Silva, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and Brentford’s Thomas Frank on Spurs’ managerial shortlist to replace Postecoglou, according to reports,

Further abroad, reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has previously shared news of Inter Milan’s Simone Inzaghi attracting admirers from within Spurs, but it will be very hard for Levy to prise the Nerazzurri boss away from Italy.

The dissatisfaction around N17 right now after this tepid campaign has caused tensions in the stands to reach boiling point, so Levy and ENIC are under real pressure to get this next appointment right, make smart investments into the squad and turn Tottenham’s fortunes around.

Tottenham now eyeing Burnley manager Scott Parker

As per The Mail and journalist Mike Keegan, a new name is now on Tottenham’s growing list of linked head coaches – Burnley boss Scott Parker.

The former Lilywhites and England midfielder amassed 63 appearances for Spurs during his playing days, and has since gone on to enjoy some successful stints during his managerial career – guiding both Fulham and Burnley to Premier League promotion.

Bar a failed stint at Jupiler Pro League side Club Brugge, the 44-year-old has showcased some promise in his early career as a tactician, and it is believed Tottenham are fans of Parker as a manager.

He’s also attracted praise from his peers, with Man City boss Pep Guardiola branding him one of English football’s new “innovative” coaches back in 2021, while former Tottenham left-back Ryan Sessegnon called Parker a “top coach” when he was linked with the hot seat four years ago.

“He’s a top guy, top man and a top coach. He’s just an all-round great guy,” explained Sessegnon.

“He obviously has a philosophy of play and sticks to it and all the players are buying into that. Recently, it hasn’t been so good for them in terms of results, but I think the performances and effort is still there.”

Talks opened: Chelsea want to sign £30m PL star who'd supercharge Palmer

Chelsea will take a commanding lead back to Stamford Bridge after they hammered Legia Warsaw 3-0 away from home in the Conference League on Thursday evening.

The Blues heavily rotated their squad for the trip to Poland and one of the young players who came in scored their first goal for the club, as Tyrique George opened the scoring.

Noni Madueke added two goals to his seasonal tally in the second half with two strikes that were assisted by Jadon Sancho, which has left Enzo Maresca’s side in a terrific position ahead of the second leg.

The Conference League is the last chance for Chelsea to win a trophy before the end of the 2024/25 campaign, whilst they continue to compete for Champions League qualification from their Premier League season.

Despite the comfortable win, there were some negatives to come out of the trip to Legia Warsaw, as centre-forward Christopher Nkunku saw his penalty saved.

Chelsea’s strikers have failed to consistently perform across all competitions this season, and it is an area for concern ahead of the summer transfer window.

Why Chelsea need a new centre-forward

Nkunku’s missed penalty against Legia Warsaw means that he has now scored one goal in his last 18 appearances against Premier League level or Conference League teams.

The France international has also failed to register a goal or an assist in any of his last six matches in all competitions, as the ex-RB Leipzig man has been unable to prove his worth to the team in a centre-forward position.

Nkunku has not done enough with his chances this season to seriously push Nicolas Jackson for the starting role in the Premier League, with a return of five goals from 5.58 xG and seven ‘big chances’ missed in the Conference League this term.

Neither Jackson nor the French flop, however, have delivered ruthless performances in front of goal in the top-flight, leaving Maresca without a reliable goalscorer in the number nine position for all of his first season at Stamford Bridge.

As you can see in the table above, both of Chelsea’s strikers have underperformed against their xG in the Premier League and missed more ‘big chances’ than they have managed goals scored.

These statistics show that the Blues lack a number nine who can make the most of the high-quality opportunities that the team can create for the striker in Maresca’s system, as they have racked up more than 16 xG between them.

This is why Chelsea should make signing a new centre-forward a big priority to bolster their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Chelsea open talks to sign Premier League striker

According to journalist Simon Phillips’ Substack, Chelsea have opened talks to sign Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The report claims that the Blues have ‘reopened’ discussions over a deal to bring the England U21 international to Stamford Bridge to compete with Jackson and Nkunku for a starting spot in the team next season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It states that the Premier League giants are ‘very serious’ about getting a move over the line for the former Manchester City star and that they want to get it done before the Club World Cup kicks off in the middle of June.

The Guardian recently reported that Delap has a clause in his contract that will allow him to leave Ipswich for £30m this summer if the Tractor Boys are relegated from the division. They are currently placed in 18th and are 12th points adrift with seven matches to go.

This suggests that it could be a fairly reasonably priced deal for Chelsea to complete this summer, which is one of a number of reasons why the Blues should ensure that they win the race for his services.

Why Chelsea should sign Liam Delap

As well as his price tag, the club should swoop to sign Delap from Ipswich because he could supercharge Cole Palmer by providing the England international with the clinical number nine that he has yet to have in a Chelsea shirt.

The Tractor Boys star has outperformed Jackson and Nkunku in the Premier League this season, in what is his first season in the top-flight after loan spells with Stoke City and Hull City in the Championship in recent years.

As you can see in the graphic above, Delap has scored three more goals and missed seven fewer ‘big chances’ in comparison to the Senegal international, outperforming his xG by roughly three goals.

The 22-year-old marksman, who joined Ipswich from Manchester City last summer, has also shown that he can do it against some of the top teams in the league, as shown by the goal against Aston Villa in the clip below.

Delap has proven himself to be a Premier League-grade centre-forward who can excel in front of goal by outperforming his xG, which suggests that he would thrive alongside a creative talent like Palmer.

As you can see in the table above, the Chelsea superstar has created a staggering 37 ‘big chances’ for his teammates since the start of last season, but has only been rewarded with 18 assists for his efforts.

This suggests that Palmer has suffered as a result of the underperformance of Chelsea’s strikers – Nkunku and Jackson – and that is why he could be supercharged by the signing of a clinical forward like Delap.

Chelsea'sColePalmerreacts

The left-footed playmaker’s assist tally could balloon next season if he has a striker, like the £30m-rated star, who can outperform his xG instead of underperforming, to create ‘big chances’ for on a regular basis.

Chelsea are believed to be prepared to fork out a significant sum for an alternative to right-back Malo Gusto this summer, with Enzo Maresca pondering his full-back options ahead of his second full season in charge.

Chelsea will be hopeful that the £250,000-per-week star can maintain this positive run of availability, but there is still a reliance on the out-of-form Gusto.

Gusto has attracted criticism throughout 2024/2025 for some sub-par displays, but Maresca will be cautious about dropping the former Lyon sensation in favour of being too overly reliant on James, as BlueCo tread carefully when it comes to the latter’s fitness.

The 21-year-old is still young and with plenty of room for improvement, though his return of just two assists in 33 appearances across all competitions will also be a concern for Maresca.

Malo Gusto in action for Chelsea

Chelsea need more threat from their full-backs on the overlap, and they ideally need a figurehead who can provide that injection of quality when they’re struggling to break sides down in the low-block.

Taking this into account, Barcelona right-back Jules Koundé could be a truly excellent option.

The France international, who can also play at centre-half, has the ability to kill two birds with one stone as Chelsea reportedly look to sign a centre-back this summer.

FC Barcelona's JulesKoundein action

Arsenal are also very interested in Kounde, according to other reports, following the 26-year-old’s exceptional campaign under Hansi Flick at the Bernabeu. Kounde has started 28 La Liga matches this term, making 50 appearances in all competitions and bagging eight assists in the process – standing out as one of Flick’s key men.

Chelsea prepared to bid £68 million for Jules Koundé this summer

Now, according to reports out of Spain, it is believed Chelsea are ready to match Arsenal in the potential race for his signature.

Indeed, Chelsea are also prepared to make an offer of £68 million for Kounde, and Barca’s current financial troubles could tempt the Catalans into doing business. This bid would represent a significant profit for Barca, at a time when they really need it, and a figure of this magnitude could represent an “unexpected solution” to balance their books.

The west Londoners are apparently ready to outbid Arsenal for Kounde, and “already have a plan in place” to sway Kounde with a move to Stamford Bridge.

One sticking point could be the defender’s £224,000-per-week wages, though, which would place him among Maresca’s highest-earning players.

Their answer to Salah: Everton want to sign "generational" Liverpool talent

This summer could be an exciting one for Everton and their supporters, having the opportunity to strengthen the first-team squad with investment from The Friedkin Group.

It will be the first full transfer window David Moyes has to make his own mark on the side after taking the reins from Sean Dyche back in January – largely having to work with the players already at Goodison Park.

A move to Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season could play on the mind of any player linked with a move to join the Toffees, possibly being a star in a new chapter for the club and taking them to the next level.

Everton managerDavidMoyescelebrates after the match

It’s no secret that the side have been underperforming for numerous years, being involved in countless relegation battles, with the summer a huge opportunity to push the side closer to the top half of the table.

Rumours have been swirling over the last couple of weeks ahead of the opening of the transfer window, with a shock move potentially on the cards for one player already on Merseyside.

Everton planning shock move for £30m star

According to Football Insider, Everton are ready to target a surprise summer move for Liverpool’s young forward Ben Doak.

The 19-year-old, who’s spending the season on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough, could be available for £30m with the teenager unlikely to break into the first-team picture at Anfield.

trey-nyoni-ben-doak-liverpool-opinion

He’s had an impressive debut season in England’s second tier, notching three goals and seven assists in his 24 outings, playing a key role in Michael Carrick’s play-off push.

The report claims that the Toffees have a growing interest in the Scottish international, with Arne Slot’s side having no issue with selling him to their rivals should an acceptable offer present itself.

It would be a huge investment from the board, but one that could set them up for future success – potentially being their own version of a leading Premier League star.

Why Doak could become Everton’s own Salah

Mohamed Salah has been a leading talent in England’s top flight over the last few years, undoubtedly to the annoyance of Everton supporters.

Mohamed Salah celebrates for Liverpool

The Liverpool winger has notched 184 goals in the Premier League after his move to Anfield back in the summer of 2017, with eight of his efforts coming against the Toffees.

There’s no denying that he’s an elite-level talent, but Moyes’ side could land their own version of the Egyptian this summer should Doak move across Merseyside.

The similarities between the Scotsman and Salah are there for all to see, with the pair both having blistering pace and their desire to cut inside onto their favoured foot – with the obvious factor being that both currently are on the books of Slot’s side.

Joining from the Reds would undoubtedly be a controversial move, but one that could excite supporters, with Doak producing some similar stats to the Liverpool star – albeit in a lower-quality division.

He’s also completed more take-ons per 90, whilst also achieving more progressive carries per 90, highlighting his superb talent with the ball at his feet.

Ben Doak in action for Middlesbrough

Doak is still only 19, having the ability to develop further down the line, subsequently taking his career to the next level with more minutes in the top-flight, something which he won’t receive with the Reds.

Whilst £30m would be a huge sum to splash out on a young prospect, he’s already demonstrated that he has the tools to make it at the top level, potentially being a bargain should he continue on his upward trajectory.

Should he get anywhere near the levels produced by Salah over the last few years, it would be a sensational piece of business, taking the side to new heights upon their move to the new stadium.

Most expensive IPL spells – Shami stops one short of Archer

Mohammed Shami of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) missed returning the most expensive IPL figures – bowled by Jofra Archer earlier this season – by just one run, when he leaked 75 runs against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Hyderabad on Saturday. Here are some of the most expensive spells in IPL history:Mohammed Shami 0 for 75 vs PBKS, IPL 2025Shami might be among the best new-ball bowlers in India but the Hyderabad track and PBKS batters are sparing nobody. Prabhsimran Singh spoiled Shami’s day from his first over itself by carting him for three consecutive fours. Priyansh Arya, the other PBKS opener, went a step further by starting the third over with back-to-back sixes followed by a four and ended the over by dispatching a full toss over midwicket for six more. Shami then gave away 11 in his third over and would have been hopeful of conceding fewer in the 20th over when SRH were fighting back in the death overs. But Marcus Stoinis dashed those hopes by smoking four sixes on the leg side to end the innings and gave Shami forgettable figures.Jofra Archer 0 for 76 vs SRH, 2025Having entered the last auction as a last-minute addition after some back and forth with the ECB and a paycut in his central contact with them, Archer had the most inauspicious start to a new IPL season with his old side Rajasthan Royals (RR). He came on as first change after SRH had already racked up 55 in four overs and he was taken apart immediately by Travis Head for a 23-run over, which also included a wide. Head’s dismissal didn’t change Archer’s fortunes, though, as Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen carted him around for six more fours and three sixes to make him top this list.Mohit Sharma 0 for 73 vs DC, 2024Mohit Sharma was introduced in the 12th over of the Delhi Capitals (DC) innings in this game from 2024. With no Shakib and Tamim, Bangladesh's mammoth win tastes even sweeter

Young batters stood up, the seamers excelled in hot conditions, and Bangladesh rolled Afghanistan over with five sessions to spare

Mohammad Isam17-Jun-2023A winning margin of 546 runs is something out of an book of records. Three of the four 500-plus-run victories in Test history have come between 1911 and 1934. Bangladesh’s win against Afghanistan in the one-off Test in Dhaka is the only entrant from the 21st century. Here’s a look at the various strands that came together for them as they pulled this result together. Why didn’t Bangladesh declare earlier? The road Bangladesh took to get to this result hasn’t sat well with everyone. On ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball commentary, suggestions from fans included “they should declare with a 400 lead” and “why aren’t they declaring yet?” Some even suggested that Bangladesh were disrespecting their opponents. Similar thoughts echoed across social media and were also discussed by the few who showed up at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Even though head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe had made it clear before start of the third day’s play that his side was going to bat the whole day.It made sense for Bangladesh to bat out the third day. They wanted to have a healthy lead and give ample time (and rest) to their bowlers before they set about chasing the last ten Afghanistan wickets. Even though there was a 40-50% chance of rain, there was no threat of long wet spells, and the last two days were going to offer enough overs to go for the win.Related

Bangladesh also didn’t think Afghanistan were pushovers. After all, the visitors had beaten them by 224 runs in Chattogram four years ago. Granted, Rashid Khan – who took took 11 wickets in that game – was missing this week in Dhaka, but so were Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal. On the third evening, Mominul Haque had denied talk of any “revenge” for that Chattogram Test. He said international sport doesn’t work that way. They were just looking to bat long, and give the bowlers a comfortable target to defend. Afghanistan were 45 for 2 in 11 overs on that third evening, chasing 662, and finished on 115 for 9 on the fourth morning, when Zahir Khan had to retire hurt with a blow to the elbow. Bangladesh had won the match with five sessions to spare.Litton happy with character shown by battersStand-in captain Litton Das said after the match that he felt pride seeing the margin of victory, on a challenging pitch, in unfavourable weather conditions.Litton: ‘You have to work equally hard, whoever you are playing against.’•BCB”You don’t get a win margin like this every day,” he said. “Credit goes to the batters. The wicket wasn’t easy, but [Bangladesh] batted really well. Bowlers did well too, maintained line and length. They had it slightly easy due to the help from the wicket. When you win a Test match, it is a big achievement. As a captain, you can’t ask for a bigger win than this one.”We believed a lot would depend on the first innings. We bowled them out for 146. The margin [of difference] started to show. It was still a difficult wicket. Our batters showed great character in the second innings. Credit must go to our batters and bowlers.”Litton said the Bangladesh top order has been showing character since last year, when Mahmudul Hasan Joy made impressive runs in New Zealand and South Africa. Zakir Hasan got a century on debut against India last year too. They scored a fifty each in this game.”Zakir is playing his third Test but even on his debut, he didn’t seem to be playing Tests for the first time,” Litton said. “He missed out on a big one due to his run-out in the second innings. I liked the way he batted. He is quite mature.”Joy is similarly mature. He showed great character in New Zealand. We want our young players to show character. They must be determined to do well for the country.”Test cricket in the new era: Bangladesh too scoring quickerBangladesh’s scoring rate stood out in both innings – 382 and 425 scored at run rates of 4.44 and 5.31, respectively. They batted in similar fashion in the one-off Test against Ireland in April, scoring at 4.82 across the two innings. It is certainly a step up from their run rate of 3.27 in Tests from October 2016 till before that Ireland game.

“In a few years’ time, we won’t have some of these senior players. If you don’t manage it now, suddenly it would become difficult when they are really gone. It would have been better had they played, but we have some capable newcomers.”No seniors? No problem, says Litton

Litton said that Test cricket’s evolution has meant that batters now give more thought to taking advantage of hittable balls rather than leaving it just because it’s a five-day game. “I think a batter should hit the ball that he thinks he can hit a four or a six. Why should he leave that ball? The opposition is always under pressure when there are runs on the board. Tests no longer go into the fifth day [much]. Everyone wants to score runs quickly, and if they have good bowlers, they declare the innings.”Bangladesh’s pacers offer stern test – of opposition and team-mates alike!Bangladesh declared their second innings on 425 for 4. Their fast bowlers took eight wickets between them in the final innings, with Taskin Ahmed finishing with career-best figures of 4 for 37.Bangladesh’s quicks picked up 14 wickets in the game•AFP/Getty ImagesEbadot Hossain had taken four wickets in the first innings, while Shoriful Islam picked up five wickets in the match, chipping in with top-order wickets. Their 14 wickets as a collective is now the most by a Bangladesh pace unit in a Test match. Litton said that it was exciting to see so many fielders in the slip cordon next to him as he collected balls regularly around his chest.”I really enjoyed captaining the side, particularly when I saw the ball carrying to me, going to the slips. It was fun as a wicketkeeper,” he said. “There was always a chance to get a wicket. We don’t usually play three pacers in Mirpur because of the wicket’s behaviour. But they had help from the wicket this time, so they did their job properly. I am very happy as a captain.”Litton said the Bangladesh batters now have a tough time themselves, facing their own fast bowlers in the nets. “Their pitch map tells the story. They are a lot more consistent in their lines and lengths. We bowled without cover and point in this game. We are aggressive even on flat wickets,” Litton said.”Their practice and work ethic have changed. We struggle to bat in the nets these days. Taskin, Ebadot, Khaled [Ahmed], Shoriful [Islam] and Musfik [Hasan], and the white-ball bowlers give us a lot more challenge in the nets. It makes our life easier in the matches.”Past, present and future not solely dependent on seniorsAs much as Afghanistan’s missing spin superstar remained a talking point through the Test, Bangladesh also had huge gaps in terms of experience in their line-up. But this is not the first time they have produced a big result with their big names absent. Litton served a reminder that Bangladesh were also without their two senior-most cricketers when they famously won in Mount Maunganui.”We won in New Zealand without Tamim and Shakib . That was a young team winning a Test in overseas conditions. It gave us the belief that hard work can bring success. Everyone in this team wants to play Test cricket. There is excitement in this lot.”In a few years’ time, we won’t have some of these senior players. If you don’t manage it now, suddenly it will become difficult when they are really gone. It would have been better had they played, but we have some capable newcomers.”

Sam Hain packs away risk-averse persona in hope of encouraging England gamble

Birmingham batter has increased his strike rate and his average while batting in one of the toughest spots in the team

Cameron Ponsonby24-Jun-2021In one of the more inspirational songs of the 20th century, Bananarama and The Fun Boy Three posited that it wasn’t in fact what you did that mattered, but the way that you did it.Sam Hain knows this feeling all too well. Weight of runs has never been an issue for Hain, but the rate at which they have been scored has. A strike rate in the low 120s saw him go undrafted for the Hundred in successive years and left a man who many believe to be the best uncapped white-ball player in the country “soul-searching” as to what to do next.Related

The answer was simple in its conclusion if complex in its process: just go out there and whack it.The results are clear to see in the numbers. In the last three editions of the Blast, Hain’s strike rate has risen from 118.60 in 2019, to 139.21 in 2020 and now 147.42 in 2021. Similarly, his average has gone from 41.72 to 56.80 to 71.50. He’s scoring more runs, faster. Bananarama would approve. But surely just deciding to whack it can’t bring about change like this? It certainly feels like it shouldn’t. However, that’s to underestimate the power of will required to leave behind a mindset that has taken you to within touching distance of the pinnacle of your profession and adopt a new one entirely.Hain describes himself as quite a risk-averse person. As a cricketer, it’s a personality trait that has seen him become the Bears’ go-to man for years. Know your strengths as much as your weaknesses, win the ball in front of you, put the game on your back and carry the team home. However, Hundred franchises and England didn’t need responsibility, they needed runs, quickly.Over time and through conversations with the Warwickshire coaching staff, Hain began to reassess his interpretation of risk.”You’ve got to flip it on its head,” he says. “What makes me, me, is that I play the game of percentages. So what I’ve been trying to do is take the riskier options earlier and know that if it doesn’t work and I do get out, I’m only going to learn from that and that’s how I’m going to get better.”As a risk-averse person, Hain realised that the greatest risk confronting him was to not take any at all. Staying in his shell risked a potential England career, whereas coming out of it merely risked his wicket. As a motto for life, it’s poignant if cliched. However, in cricketing terms, it’s not a strategy that would work for everyone; Hain is already very good at cricket and his new mindset has only served to unleash his ability.”Technically, there’s honestly not much I’ve changed,” he says. “I feel like I’ve got most of the shots and I’m pretty 360 [degrees]. I truly believe I can play all around the ground and it was just the confidence to do so that was lacking.”Another thing of note with Hain’s success is the position in which he’s been scoring his runs: No. 4. Four is the worst place to bat in T20 cricket. Hain himself admitted to some hesitancy when he was first given the role last season saying, “it’s quite a tricky position”. If you come in during the Powerplay it means you’ve lost two early wickets, whereas if you come in just after the Powerplay you’re likely facing the opposition’s best spinner. Any later than that and you’re expected to tee off from ball one. It requires immense versatility and a player’s strike rate often suffers as a result, a metric that matters more for Hain than most. However, it is working with the Bears. And given the success he has found in the role, Hain insists that he “definitely wouldn’t change at the moment”, and that he doesn’t crave a return to the top of the order for Birmingham any time soon. Although he does say it in the same way you tell your girlfriend’s family that you’re happy with any takeaway when in reality you want the duck pancakes and to open the batting. In two years, Hain’s T20 game has transitioned from being the thorn in his career to bringing him into strong contention as one of the Hundred’s wildcard picks for this summer’s tournament. And whilst it remains to be seen if it’s enough to force his way into England’s white-ball teams, he remains, as ever, the Bears go-to man. Still getting the job done, just that bit more quickly.
