For Najmul Hossain Shanto, it's time to make the question marks go away

The century in the Pallekele Test could become a turning point in the career of the talented No. 3 batter

Mohammad Isam14-May-2021With a picture-perfect cover drive, Najmul Hossain Shanto reaches his maiden Test century. It’s the Pallekele Test against Sri Lanka. He looks quite relieved, his partner – Mominul Haque, the Bangladesh captain – wears a broad smile and has a chat with Shanto. Then Shanto takes off his helmet and bows towards the Bangladesh dressing room. Players and support staff applaud. The bow, it turns out, was not just a random gesture. It had a deeper meaning, especially for Shanto, who then went on to score 163.”It was meant for everyone in the dressing room – the senior players, the coaching staff and the captain –  they all supported me in the last 18 months,” Shanto told . “I didn’t have the best of times in my last four or five innings, but they all kept supporting me. Everyone tried to give me confidence.”The home series against West Indies in February this year, which Bangladesh lost 2-0, hadn’t gone well for Shanto, as his scores read 25, 0, 4 and 11. A young batter who has shown potential, Shanto wasn’t scoring runs, and the team needed results. He was, therefore, half-expecting to be dropped for the two-Test series in Sri Lanka.Related

“Self-doubt dents one’s confidence,” he said. “When I wasn’t playing well, hesitation crept in, and at times I was left wondering if I’d be picked in the next match. But everyone kept supporting me, saying that I would keep playing. Things become easier for a player when the captain and coaching staff gives more opportunities. This environment helped me focus on the match.”After being picked in the XI for Pallekele, he to score. Shanto walked out in the second over. Tamim Iqbal had settled in quickly, and that helped, Shanto said. “Tamim was batting quite easily at the other end, that too at a rapid pace. The pressure was off me. So I could bat normally. We were trying to put together a big partnership after the early wicket (of Saif Hassan).”I think what was different about this innings was how I didn’t hurry. My process was in place for some time. I was mentally relaxed. I didn’t put pressure on myself.”He ended the day unbeaten on 126, with Bangladesh at 302 for 2. It’s only after he returned to the hotel that he realised what he had done. “I was focused on just scoring runs during the innings – I didn’t feel anything special when I got the century,” Shanto said. “I spent a little time thinking about the match itself. I was enjoying batting. Only when I returned to my hotel room I started thinking about the innings.”

****

After the hundred, his next three scores in the series were 0, 0 and 26. This inconsistency might make many undermine his progress but there is a reason to believe the glass is half-full, though. His 163, an innings in which he looked every bit a Test No. 3, was a mini victory from a selection point of view – consistency in selection, with the hope that the players would repay their faith.

“I break my innings down into small parts but whenever I get set, I try to make it big. This is how I have played since I was very young, and now I am trying to do the same in international cricket.”Najimul Hossain Shanto

And when a team doesn’t win often – Bangladesh are without a victory in ten matches (across formats) since February this year, with just one drawn match – the team management might not be expected to give a long rope for a player. But they did. Shanto’s century vindicated the patience shown by those who backed him. But when he didn’t score against West Indies, or those two ducks against Sri Lanka, that same support could be seen as a privilege. In Bangladesh, when it comes to backing a player for a long time, the first name that comes to mind is that of Mohammad Ashraful. It was a different time in Bangladesh cricket in 2001 at the start of his career when a debutant centurion just had to be persisted with. Mushfiqur Rahim and Iqbal had ordinary numbers at the start of their careers too, but they had played match-winning knocks in the 2007 World Cup and then announced their arrivals on the international stage.More recently, Soumya Sarkar started brightly with match-winning knocks against Pakistan and South Africa in his first 30 innings, but around that period, he also suffered a dip in form that has never really gone away. Liton Das was dropped after scoring one half-century in his first 15 innings, and it was only his 121 in the Asia Cup final against India three years ago and the unbeaten 94 against West Indies in the 2019 World Cup that brought him back.Like all of them, Shanto started off as a prodigy, having scored heavily in school and age-group cricket in Rajshahi, one of the breeding grounds for talent in Bangladesh. He rose quickly to the Under-19s, and played the 2014 and 2016 World Cups at that level.”I come from a village called Ranhat in Rajshahi where there aren’t many established cricketers. I used to cycle and walk about 20 kilometres to the Clemon Rajshahi Cricket Academy. I came through the district and divisional age-group tournaments, having played the Under-14s, Under-17s and Under-19s. My first brush with pressure was at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup. The tournament was held at home. I had the anchor role, so I had to play team-specific knocks. I couldn’t just play like I wanted to. I had to stick to whatever the team needed.”Shanto made 259 runs in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup that put on him the spotlight•ICCIt was that Under-19 World Cup that grabbed the selectors’ attention. Shanto ended with 259 runs at an average of 64.75. He was fast-tracked to the senior level like many before him, and Shanto made his Test debut within 12 months of playing his last Under-19 game.”A player is introduced to fitness and technique, and begins to understand a team’s perspective at the Under-19 level,” he explained. “He can organise himself at this level, but this is the pipeline. It is very different from the senior level. I think what matters more are the high-performance teams, the ‘A’ team, and Under-23s, where a player starts to get prepared for the highest level.”

****

Shanto’s reputation grew, and he was in the fringes of the national team. He made his Test debut too, but that was when Bangladesh were hit by injuries. He was brought back into the side a couple of times in 2018 and 2019 with little by way of returns. After his debut in Christchurch in 20217 against New Zealand, he played just a match the following year, against Zimbabwe. After that, he got an opportunity to play only in February 2020, against Pakistan in an away series. It was only during last year’s Rawalpindi Test that he looked comfortable in his role – driving, cutting and pulling the ball at this level for the first time. But the pandemic disrupted the calendar and he had to wait for a year to get back on the field. The break, though, seemed to have not affected his game. And the Pallekele century in April suggests he could turn the corner soon.”I have always tried to play the long innings,” he said. “I break it down into small parts but whenever I get set, I try to make it big. This is how I have played since I was very young, and now I am trying to do the same in international cricket. I have only had one (century) so far, so I am looking forward to scoring more.”I want to contribute in every win for Bangladesh, going forward. This is my main target. It can be two good catches, it can be a century or it can just be ten runs.”As far as his next target is concerned, Shanto wants to be consistent to be a part of Bangladesh’s future plans. At a time when there are three World Cups in as many years, there is every opportunity for him to establish as a reliable player. He can certainly look at batters like Rahim and Iqbal, who showed early signs of their longevity, for inspiration and also learn from the likes of Mohammad Ashraful and Aftab Ahmed about not being too complacent. With the selectors showing signs to give him a long rope, it is now about repaying their faith for Shanto, and that bow to the dressing room in Pallekele could be the start of that.

Yankees Interested in Outfield Help, Which Could Include Reunion With Former Player

The New York Yankees are in the middle of a midseason snag, and are buying at the trade deadline as they look to pursue the first-place Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East.

The Yankees have already acquired former Colorado Rockies first baseman Ryan McMahon, as well as former Washington Nationals infielder Amed Rosario. Now New York is still seeking bullpen help, but is adding outfielders to the wish list with Aaron Judge on the IL with an elbow issue.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the outfield help could come by way of a reunion with Minnesota Twins centerfielder Harrison Bader, who last played for the Yankees in 2023. The Yankees are also interested in Chicago White Sox outfielder Austin Slater.

Bader is hitting .255 for the Twins this season with 12 home runs and 38 RBI, while Slater is batting .241 with five home runs and 11 RBI.

Despite outfield help now being classified as a need, the Yankees are expected to continue to be in the market for relief pitching before the deadline later this week.

Lamine Yamal surpasses Kylian Mbappe! Barcelona wonderkid makes Champions League history in style by breaking record in Frankfurt comeback

Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal added another record to his collection on Tuesday night in the Champions League. His assist for Jules Kounde in Barca's 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt means that he now has more goal involvements in the competition than any other player aged 18 or under, breaking the record previously held by Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe.

  • Barcelona come from behind to seal win

Barcelona were made to work hard for their three points against Eintracht Frankfurt at Camp Nou on Tuesday night. The Catalan giants went 1-0 down thanks to an opening goal from Ansgar Knauff, but hit back after the break to seal the win. Two goals from Kounde were enough for victory, with Marcus Rashford and Yamal bagging assists in the game for Hansi Flick's side.

    Yamal overtakes Mbappe with assist

Yamal set up Barcelona's winner for Kounde which means he has now been directly involved in 14 goals (seven goals and seven assists) in the Champions League for Barcelona. The 18-year-old therefore overtakes Mbappe (ten goals and three assists) for the most goal involvements by a player aged 18 or younger in the competition’s history. Yamal is likely to add to that tally too, as he does not celebrate his 19th birthday until July, giving him plenty more time to add more Champions League goals and assists to his collection.

  • Yamal banned for Barcelona's next UCL game

However, Yamal will be forced to watch Barcelona's next Champions League match from the sidelines. The teenager picked up his third booking of the 2025-26 competition against Eintracht Frankfurt which brings an automatic one-match suspension. Flick will therefore will have to cope with his brilliant wonderkid for Barcelona's next European outing in January against Slavia Prague.

  • Flick admits teenager unhappy at being subbed

Yamal was substituted late in the game against Eintracht Frankfurt and appeared to be less than impressed with the decision to take him off before the final whistle at Camp Nou. Flick was asked about his teenage star after the game and spoke about the decision to replace him. He told reporters: "Lamine was a little disappointed when he came on, but he had a yellow card and needed fresh legs. These are three very important points. We controlled the game; it was a very difficult match. They defended very deep. We have to focus on ourselves and get six more points."

Florian Wirtz's Liverpool nightmare continues as Arne Slot reveals £116m playmaker is injured and will miss upcoming games

Florian Wirtz's tough start to life in England has taken another turn, as Liverpool boss Arne Slot confirmed his playmaker will miss the Reds' Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The Dutch coach said the £116 million man has picked up a "muscle issue", but did not provide a timeline on his recovery. The injury comes after Wirtz impressed for Germany over the international break.

Wirtz absence headlines Liverpool's injury woes

Slot gave an update on the health of his squad during his pre-match press conference on Friday. The Dutchman revealed that along with Wirtz, Conor Bradley also picked up a muscle complaint during the international break. Liverpool's boss said he expects the Northern Irishman to be out for at least the next three weeks. His absence could cause a selection headache for the Reds going forward, as Jeremie Frimpong remains sidelined with a thigh injury he picked up during Liverpool's 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt last month. Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones have both filled in on the right side of defence this season, however, there is no recognised senior right-back left in the squad.

While the former Feyenoord boss did not give an exact timeline on Wirtz's return, he did suggest the ex-Bayer Leverkusen midfielder would be sidelined for a shorter period than Bradley.

There was some positive news however, with Alisson Becker fit enough to start against Forest. The Brazilian could feature for the first time since sustaining a hamstring injury in the Reds defeat to Galatasaray back in September.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportSlot expects Wirtz back within three weeks

Speaking on Wirtz and Bradley's injury situations, Slot said: "Both muscle issues. I don't expect Conor to be part of the next 22 days.

"Maybe he returns towards the end of that period unless a miracle happens. Florian should be back sooner, it depends how things go but it should not be too long.

"Jeremie is out for a similar timeframe and probably will not be available for the next two or three weeks either. It will be interesting to see who plays at right back.

"Curtis Jones filled in there last season and Joe Gomez has played there as well, but he has only completed 90 minutes in 2025, so asking to play seven times in 22 days is a risk."

Wirtz performs on international duty

Wirtz's injury comes after a productive international break for the 22-year-old. Germany booked their place in next summer's World Cup with victories over Slovakia and Luxembourg.

During Die Mannschaft's 6-0 win over Slovakia earlier this week, Wirtz was influential, setting up Leroy Sane for the third goal with a brilliant diagonal ball. The playmaker was mobbed by his teammates in the aftermath, perhaps as a sign of solidarity as Wirtz continues to struggle to adapt to life in the Premier League.

German boss Julian Nagelsmann again defended his player during the international break. He said: "We all know what he's capable of, and it's perfectly normal for a player of his age to go through a bit of a dip in form. We can't expect him to perform at the same level for three years straight. Instead, we all need to support him a little bit so that he can clear his head here, and then maybe Liverpool could also help him out by scoring some of the chances he creates. That would be one idea, because he does not create few chances, it's just that… they somehow don't like to shoot the ball in, that's also part of the truth."

Getty Images SportIs Wirtz up to physical demands of the Premier League?

His international manager's protestations will do little to curb criticism of Wirtz in a Liverpool shirt. The suggestion the ex-Leverkusen man is pill-prepared for the physical demands of the Premier League will continue. Following the Reds 3-0 defeat by Manchester City, Gary Neville said Wirtz looked like a "little boy", while his ability to perform in the lower tempo Champions League and World Cup qualifiers will fuel those theories.

While an injury during a crowded period in the schedule is par for the course, if Wirtz continues to break down with niggling ailments, that could quickly become another stick to beat him with.

If Slot's vague timeline is accurate, Wirtz should return to the Liverpool team no later than Liverpool's Champions League away trip to Inter on December 9.

Record-breaking Rew and Abell rescue Somerset

Somerset 338 for 4 (Rew 162*, Abell 156, Abbas 3-49) vs Nottinghamshire Centuries from James Rew and Tom Abell in a county record partnership enabled Somerset to take an opening-day advantage over Nottinghamshire in the clash between second and third in Division One of the Rothesay County Championship, closing on 338 for four.Rew (162 not out) and Abell, who fell for a career-best 156 moments before the close, added 313 in 81 overs, overtaking the 310 shared by Peter Denning and Ian Botham against Gloucestershire at Taunton in 1980 as Somerset’s biggest fourth-wicket stand. It was all the more impressive for Somerset having been two wickets down in three overs without a run on the board when Rew walked to the crease, and 25 for 3 when he was joined by Abell.Pakistan seamer Mohammad Abbas – who reached the milestone of 800 first-class victims – took all three wickets in a difficult first hour for the visitors after losing the toss but they were the only successes for the Nottinghamshire attack until the final minutes of the day.Rew earned a call-up to the England squad for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in May after two centuries in the first month of the season. The 21-year-old did not make the cut on that occasion but senior international recognition must surely come in time.Nottinghamshire began this round of matches – the 11th of 14 – a point behind leaders and defending champions Surrey, with Somerset third after their victory over Durham last week.Somerset’s painful beginning to the day saw Abbas remove Lewis Gregory and Tom Lammonby in his first and second overs, the captain leg before offering no shot to a delivery he clearly judged would slide harmlessly past his off stump before Lammonby, with only defensive intent, nicked to second slip.Under heavy cloud cover after a damp early morning, conditions looked ideal for the veteran Abbas. Haseeb Hameed, the Nottinghamshire captain, duly gave him an extended spell while the Kookaburra ball retained its hardness. He was rewarded again, finding the outside edge of Josh Davey’s straight bat. With this dismissal, Abbas totalled 800 first-class wickets, 284 of them in the English county game.Somerset were in some trouble, but Rew had already shown a glimpse of his class when he drove Abbas to the cover boundary and pulled him for four in the same over with two high-quality strokes. More would follow. As batting became easier, Abell began to look as assured as his partner, the two adding 65 in what remained of the opening session, which proved to be a platform from which they dominated the afternoon.Rew, who reached 51 from 75 balls with his first scoring shot of the afternoon, lofting left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White clear of the straight boundary in front of the currently shrouded pavilion, went to a century – his third of the season – from 138, adding two more sixes to the shorter side of the playing area off Calvin Harrison, the leg spinner. Other than an edge off Patterson-White on 92, the ball looping out of even the tall Harrison’s reach at slip, he had looked in complete control.By tea, Abell having completed his first hundred of the year, Somerset had added 137 for no loss to be 227 for 3 and Nottinghamshire, though there had been signs of turn, needed some inspiration.Thereafter, Rew’s touch seemed a little less sure, both batters comparatively quiet as the Nottinghamshire spinners gained some control. They attacked the second new ball with some success, although Rew, cutting vigorously, survived a half-chance to second slip off Brett Hutton on 148 before going to 150 from 239 balls.Abell in turn reached 151 from 245 balls, setting the partnership record with two into the offside off Dillon Pennington, before falling to a top-edged pull off the same bowler, after which only two more deliveries were possible before failing light forced the players off 15 balls before the scheduled close.

Daniel Farke says Leeds have a "world-class" versatile player who he's not picking

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has described out-of-favour Joel Piroe as “the best finisher I’ve ever worked with” and says the striker has a crucial role to play this season.

Farke paid tribute to Piroe before Saturday’s lunch-time kick-off against Tottenham at Elland Road having left the Dutchman out of his side’s previous four starting line-ups.

Piroe’s 19 league goals helped fire Leeds to promotion last season, earning him the Sky Bet Championship’s Golden Boot, but he did not even make Farke’s squad for last month’s defeat at Fulham.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has emerged as Leeds’ first-choice striker, while Farke has given fellow summer signing Lukas Nmecha the nod off the bench ahead of Piroe in recent matches, with the Whites boss going into Piroe’s versatile ability.

Farke also described Piroe as a “top professional”, adding: “I’m pretty sure that we will see him on many occasions on the pitch and hopefully he can deliver.”

Leeds will bid to extend their unbeaten home league record to 24 matches on Saturday against Tottenham.

Farke’s side last lost a league game at Elland Road in September last year – 1-0 against Burnley – while a third Premier League win of the season could lift them into the top half of the table.

Tottenham, who have won five of their last six encounters with Leeds, sit fourth after last week’s 1-1 home draw against Wolves and drew 2-2 in Norway against Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday in the Champions League.

Fewer touches than Raya: Arteta must drop 5/10 Arsenal dud after Palace

Arsenal took a huge stride towards ending their two-decade wait for a Premier League title, after securing a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace earlier this afternoon.

Eberechi Eze’s goal against his former employers was enough to secure Mikel Arteta’s men all three points in a hard-fought encounter against the Eagles.

Three points alone is a huge deal for the Gunners, but given the slip-ups from their title rivals, the victory has become an even more important one for the club.

Liverpool suffered a 3-2 defeat to Brentford last night, whilst Manchester City fell to a 1-0 loss against Aston Villa this afternoon – resulting in a four-point cushion for Arteta’s side.

However, despite the triumph in North London, numerous players fell way below the high standards they’ve previously set for themselves in England’s top-flight.

Arsenal’s poor performers against Crystal Palace

Despite spending around £65m on the signature of Viktor Gyokeres, the striker has often failed to live up to the expectations of the Arsenal faithful in the last few months.

The Swede may have scored five goals for the Gunners to date, but he’s now without a league goal in any of his last five appearances for Arteta’s men.

His showing against the Eagles was yet another to forget for the 27-year-old, as he only registered 27 touches of the ball in his 90-minute showing – whilst also notching a solitary effort on goal.

Bukayo Saka has been another player who has made himself a fan-favourite at the Emirates, but there’s no denying that his showing against Palace was one below the expectations he’s set for himself.

The England international matched Gyokeres in failing to register a single effort on target, whilst also being unable to register a single chance for any of his teammates.

The 24-year-old also lost possession on 11 separate occasions, producing a somewhat wasteful showing – something which is highly unusual for his usual standards.

The Arsenal star who needs to be dropped after Palace

The three points will undoubtedly be the most pleasing aspect for Arteta, but he will certainly have a few issues to iron out ahead of next weekend’s clash with Burnley.

His men dominated the play in large spells, subsequently having 60% possession, but they were only able to muster three efforts on Dean Henderson’s goal.

Arteta’s side’s total xG of just 1.08 also reflected the lack of threat that the Gunners carried throughout the all-London affair at the Emirates this afternoon.

However, despite the disappointing performances from the aforementioned duo, Leandro Trossard once again failed to repay the manager’s faith in starting the winger.

The Belgian was handed his fifth successive league start this afternoon, but was unable to have the desired impact off the left-hand side of the Gunners’ attack.

He featured for the entirety of the contest, but was unable to hugely threaten the opposition goal – even missing a big chance in front of goal during his performance.

The 30-year-old also only completed one dribble, whilst achieving a tally of just 44 touches – a figure lower than that of goalkeeper David Raya, who achieved a total of 46.

Trossard’s dismal afternoon was further reflected in his tally of 60% duels lost, often struggling to create any chances against Palace right-back Daniel Munoz.

To top off his afternoon, the wideman was given a measly 5/10 match rating by The Express journalist Tom Parsons – further highlighting how poor he was in North London.

After such a display, Arteta must be left with no choice but to drop the Belgian back down to the substitutes bench, with Gabriel Martinelli deserving of a run off the left-hand side.

It’s a shame to see Trossard struggling to deliver, but given what’s at stake for the club this campaign, the manager has to be brutal if his side are to end their extended wait for a league title.

He’d easily take the #14 from Gyokeres, but Arsenal let him leave for £0

This one-time Arsenal prospect has gone on to become a “world-class” striker.
