Carberry duck as Shah helps easy win

Hampshire claimed a quite unexpectedly straightforward victory even though Michael Carberry, so often their match-winning performer in limited-overs cricket, was out of sorts.

Hampshire claimed a quite unexpectedly straightforward victory even though Michael Carberry, so often their match-winning performer in limited-overs cricket, was out of sorts. Doubtless he would wish to have another innings in the one-day series between England and Sri Lanka but Hampshire did not even have to seek his release from involvement at Lord’s. Given that Alastair Cook was properly fit again, he was indeed surplus to international requirements. So Carberry journeyed back to the south coast, only to prod around the crease uncertainly even before he swung Matt Salisbury to deep-square leg. He had not scored. Fortunately for Hampshire, who know their conditions and not least a slow pitch, James Vince is in rather better form. Jimmy Adams, free from the responsibilities of captaincy in this form of the game, was soon driving through the covers to good effect and Owais Shah was in the touch of his salad days. His unbeaten half-century included three fours and three sixes against Essex, his former county. An unattractive lunge at the same bowler resulted in Adams’ dismissal, the ball spooning up to midwicket, but Vince, who may well be regarded as a better bet for England – both in the one-day game and Test cricket – in the years to come, reached a half century off 42 balls with three fours and two sixes, altogether making batting appear a more simple affair than anything that had gone before. Shah, whose fielding earlier had not been altogether sound, gave him ideal support. One swept six off Salisbury was worth the admission in itself. Hampshire won with as many as 16 balls to spare. On a sluggish pitch on which the ball initially did not come onto the bat – although bowlers such as Matt Coles are so adept at slower deliveries these days that it is not always easy to gauge – Essex fell some 30 runs short of what they would have reckoned on achieving. Put in, they only properly dominated a varied attack when Ben Foakes was in partnership with James Foster.Foakes is talented, make no mistake. Even if one did, Graham Gooch, who rates him highly, would correct anyone uninformed. One extra cover drive off Danny Briggs, who was bowling with customary control, was the classiest shot of the innings. When he fell through a leading edge that was held at mid-off, he had made 43 off 34 balls.Foster, whose six over extra-cover off Sean Ervine was the best improvised shot of the night, was unbeaten with 29 from as many balls when Essex ran out of overs. Indeed, the final blow, a pulled six by Tim Phillips off Coles, who might perhaps have been better off completing his spell from the Pavilion end, where he had maintained exemplary control, gave the total more of a respectable look.Other than that, Jesse Ryder was soon caught at third man, Tom Westley swung across the line at Briggs and was bowled, Mark Pettini was bowled by Will Smith lying back and attempting to drive through the off side ring, and Greg Smith was stumped by Adam Wheater off Briggs. Not a particularly distinguished innings, but then run-making appeared to be an exacting task at times. At least it did until Vince came to the wicket. The margin of victory was quite beyond what Essex would have anticipated, given they were unbeaten in this south group. For Hampshire, there is no over-reliance on Carberry.

Lyth, Lees pedal freely on Yorkshire road

To mark Yorkshire’s triumphant staging of Le Grand Depart, Headingley seemed to have produced a road. Yorkshire’s openers, Ales Lees and Adam Lyth, piled up 270 for the first wicket

To mark Yorkshire’s triumphant staging of Le Grand Depart, Headingley seemed to have produced a road. Paul Collingwood chose to bowl and looked on in dismay as Yorkshire’s openers, Ales Lees and Adam Lyth, piled up 270 for the first wicket. Until tea, the surface looked so flat it would have been appropriate if little yellow bicycles had been pinned to the stumps.Lees and Lyth share the highest partnership in county cricket this season – 375 against Northants at Wantage Road last month. They have barely been together two minutes, but already they bat like an established pair. Lyth, in form, is full of zest. Lees is the statelier of the two, a tall, languid left-hander with occasional reminders of a young Alastair Cook, such as when he knocked Collingwood off his hip to reach his hundred. “More shots than Cook,” said one Yorkshire sage, protectively. If Lees, as the statelier of the two openers, rode a bicycle, one suspects he would sit in upright fashion on an expensive affair with a posh saddlebag. Lyth is an adventurer, drives zinging from his bat, ambitions held in check, at least on his good days, and this indubitably was one of them. His bike would likely bear the marks of a collision or two at high speed, and he would probably be the first to offer you a croggy the wrong way up a one-way street. For those who need an explanation, that is a lift on the handlebars of a bike, incidentally – a northern word and one which sadly did not make the TV coverage of the Tour de France. Then, in the 72nd over, Yorkshire crashed. Headingley’s supposed road briefly looked as uneven as Haworth’s cobbled main street – although in actuality it was down to Mark Wood’s late inswing. Once Lees had fallen for 108, lbw to Scott Borthwick’s leg spin, Wood, back in the Durham side after injury, began to make the old ball sing.Wood relived to be over injury woe

Mark Wood was still wearing the protective covering on the ankle injury that has brought him further frustration in an injury-disrupted season. But this time he had a burst of 4 for 4 in 11 balls to recall as he returned in style for Durham after his latest spell on the sidelines.
Wood’s devastating late swing with the old ball thrust Durham back into the match after Yorkshire’s openers, Alex Lees and Adam Lyth, had put on 270 for the first wicket – not what his skipper Paul Collingwood wanted to see after putting Yorkshire into bat. “We got a bit of a rollocking from Colly at lunch after the way we bowled in the morning,” Wood said.
Wood’s injury problems began on an England Lions tour of Sri Lanka when he suffered a side strain. He missed the start of the season and when he did come back the injury recurred. Then he discovered a cyst on an ankle.
“My ankle just blew up from nowhere in training one day,” he said. “It has been a hugely frustrating period for me,” he said. “I have been sick of being on the sidelines, but I felt that I began to get match fitness as the day went on.”

Wood, who has a sprinter’s run up the crease, took 4 for 4 in 11 balls; Yorkshire lost five for 21 in nine overs, a position of dominance jettisoned in not much more than half an hour. Lyth’s 143 came to grief when he played back to a ball of goodish length and was undone by one that came back. Andrew Gale and Jonny Bairstow followed in Wood’s next over; Gale galumphed across his stumps, Bairstow shouldered arms to his second ball and was bowled by one that swung back. Jack Leaning did muster a shot in Wood’s following over, but was bowled anyway.Collingwood, who must have been regretting his decision to insert Yorkshire, suddenly felt much better. Durham had buckled down in the afternoon session after spilling 145 with some ill-directed fare up to lunch. But the force remained with Yorkshire when Lyth, on 71, hooked loosely at John Hastings and the ball fell conveniently short of deep-square. Then Durham’s wicketkeeper, Phil Mustard, shelled a good chance to his left when Lees was 91; Collingwood, at first slip, got an even better view of that.Just before Yorkshire’s collapse, Dickie Bird, le grand Presidente as he now must be known, told how he had maintained tradition by being first to arrive at Sheffield arena for Sunday’s second stage of Le Tour. Eventually he found somebody to make him a cup of tea. He watches Yorkshire’s young Lions with unabashed pride. He would also have walked out to the middle to check whether Borthwick was running on the pitch if he had been allowed to. It would seem careless from Borthwick with Durham having to bat last.Dickie left before there was a chance to tell him one of Yorkshire’s favourite Tour de France jokes. It concerns the old Dales farmer who was aghast to find thousands of cyclists in Lycra riding down his lane, watched by a throng of spectators. Advised as to the purpose and given a full breakdown of the route they were taking, he thought for a moment. “Tha’s quicker ways to ‘Arriget,” he said. There are also safer ways to get to 359 for 7, Yorkshire’s first-day resting point. Durham took the new ball with five down, Aaron Finch and Adil Rashid initially repelled it with gusto, taking 34 from the first 32 balls, but Chris Rushworth dismissed both courtesy of Scott Borthwick at second slip.It brought a fluctuating and vastly entertaining day to an end. Well worth the admission money, although now that folk in these parts have fallen in love with something they can watch for free, Yorkshire will fear it will be even harder to get their hands on their money.

O'Keefe ready for UAE audition

Spinner Steve O’Keefe is hoping his shoulder stands up to the rigours of a four-day match against South Africa A this week as he auditions for a possible place in Australia’s Test squad

Spinner Steve O’Keefe is hoping his shoulder stands up to the rigours of a four-day match against South Africa A this week as he auditions for a possible place in Australia’s Test squad.O’Keefe will take the field for Australia A in Townsville in a match starting on Thursday, his first game for nearly five months, after he had a shoulder reconstruction at the end of the summer. However, the good news for O’Keefe’s left-arm bowling is that it was his right shoulder that required the surgery, meaning that his main test will come if he has to dive in the field.”It’s as good as I can be,” O’Keefe told the . “It’s going to take six months for it to heal properly and the surgeon said it doesn’t matter what I do in terms of strength or stretching, that’s just how long the body is going to take naturally.”I’ve done everything in my power to get it to a standard where I can bat and bowl, the only issue is diving on it [fielding] but I’ve been able to manage that. It’s good enough to play, that’s for certain.”If fully fit, O’Keefe would be difficult to ignore for Australia’s upcoming Test tour of Pakistan in October, given the likelihood of spinning conditions there. Nathan Lyon was the only specialist slow bowler taken on Australia’s most recent Test tour, to South Africa in February-March, but there is no question that at least two will be needed in the UAE.O’Keefe was the leading wicket taker in the Sheffield Shield last summer, with 41 victims at 20.43, and over the course of a 40-match first-class career has collected 126 wickets at 24.52. He played seven T20 internationals from 2010 to 2011 but has been overlooked for Test duties while other left-arm orthodox spinners such as Ashton Agar, Xavier Doherty and Michael Beer have been chosen.”I haven’t had any feedback be it technical or mental but you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out why you haven’t been picked,” O’Keefe said. “I can understand why they’ve picked those guys in front of me. You certainly can’t whinge. You have to improve your game and put performances on the board. It’s as simple as it gets.”

Bailey nominates Finch as successor

George Bailey has endorsed Aaron Finch as a potential captain of Australia’s Twenty20 team and said that discovering a world-class T20 spinner should be Australia’s priority in the shortest form

George Bailey has endorsed Aaron Finch as a potential captain of Australia’s Twenty20 team and said that discovering a world-class T20 spinner should be Australia’s priority in the shortest form. Bailey stood down from the captaincy on Sunday and may have played his last T20 international, although he hopes to win selection again in the future. He was installed as captain on debut in early 2012 and led Australia to a World T20 semi-final in Sri Lanka later that year, although they were unable to progress to that stage in Bangladesh earlier this year. Bailey said that with the next World T20 to be played in India in 2016, stepping down from the captaincy now would give his successor a chance to develop in the role.”I think there’s plenty of candidates,” Bailey said from Zimbabwe, where he led Australia in the ODI tri-series after Michael Clarke flew home with a hamstring injury. “It’s a bit speculative, but I think Aaron Finch would be really good. I think he’s someone who has done it really well domestically [for Melbourne Renegades] and I think he thrives on it.”I think he’s going to have a lot of opportunities to play. He’s someone who would do it really well. But whoever the selectors go with I’m sure will do it really well. They will know the challenges that come with it. But I think it will be someone of the age where they really embrace the T20 culture.”Bailey captained Australia in 28 T20s for 14 wins and has been the country’s longest-serving leader in the format. He said that regardless of who succeeded him, Australia’s biggest priority should be finding a spinner who can thrive in turning conditions. Australia’s spinners claimed only four wickets in this year’s World T20 despite the helpful pitches.”I think we did really well in Sri Lanka,” Bailey said. “I think we probably got further than perhaps we should’ve, on the back of some wonderful individual performances, which sums up T20 in some respects. Bangladesh was really interesting because I actually thought we played really good T20 cricket in the two games that knocked us out, and then we were out. That’s the nature of the game. That was difficult to swallow.”Given where the last two World Cups have been, given where the next World Cup is, from my conversations with Pat Howard, I honestly think our challenge as a T20 team is to find a world-class spinner. That is what’s going to take us to the next level.”
