Andy Flower has declined to deny suggestions that he is considering stepping down from his day-to-day coaching position with the England Test team.Flower, responding to a story first published by ESPNcricinfo on August 22, insisted he was “not thinking about” the vacancy created by Hugh Morris’ decision to move on from his role as managing director of England cricket, but would not give any guarantees over his long-term future.Flower, who has a young family and has been in the England job since early 2009, scaled back his workload at the end of 2012 in a bid to improve his work-life balance. While he remains team director in all formats, the day-to-day coaching of the limited overs team passed to Ashley Giles. It is believed a similar arrangement is under consideration for the Test team, with Flower not currently committing himself beyond the end of the tour to Australia in January.”I’ve always said you can’t look too far ahead,” Flower said. “You never know what’s just round the corner.”Would I fancy Hugh’s job? I’m not even thinking about that.”England’s relentless schedule has increased the risk of burnout to players and coaches for some time. But while the next few months are as hectic as normal, the end of 2014 offers some respite. England play only one overseas Test next year, in Sydney at the start of January, with the focus later in the year moving to ODI cricket ahead of the World Cup in February and March 2015. Such factors could persuade Flower to remain in position for a while longer.”The reason [in stepping back] was to get a better work-life balance. Being away from home for 250 days a year didn’t allow that. And we were also looking at maximising the use of our resources, in this instance our coaching resources. The structure is still bedding down, but having two coaches dovetailing may well be the best use of the ECB’s resources.”I do take the responsibility that the ECB have given me very seriously,” Flower said. “I’m supposed to make a difference to English cricket in a positive way and I take that responsibility very seriously. I’ll continue to do that.”I don’t have a fixed term contract. I’m very happy with the balance and I’m still enjoying the job. Very much so.”More importantly this series has worked pretty well: we won 3-0. That’s the important thing.”Next year our only away Test is in Sydney. There will be a priority switch to the 2015 World Cup at some stage. It’s too far away to think if I will be there. I don’t think I’ll be under-employed. There’s always plenty to do. I’ve always said you can’t look too far ahead.”If Flower does apply for Morris’ job, it appears he will have the support of his predecessor. Morris, who suggested there will be “an open recruitment” process to fill his role, was effusive in his praise of Flower.”I think whatever role Andy wants to do in the future he will do outstandingly well,” Morris said. “He is somebody who I’ve always admired before he came into the ECB as a player as a person. He has done an outstanding job in his current role. Whatever he wants to put his mind to do in the future, he will do well.”But Morris was also full of praise for Andrew Strauss. While he only retired as a player 12-months ago, Strauss has spent part of this year shadowing Morris in his role and learning some of the skills required for a job in administration.”Similar to Andy, Strauss is an incredibly capable bloke,” Morris said. “He said to me a while ago that when he finished playing he wanted to dip his toe in the water, try different things, see what he enjoyed doing, and then make some decisions. So he is, again, an outstanding man, and whatever he wants to do he will do incredibly well.”I think there will be a lot of people who will fancy a crack at the job. And quite rightly. It is a fantastic job. I have been really lucky to have done it, and done it for as long as I have done. It is a really great department full of really good people. I think we have got some systems in place now for talented kids at the age of 16 all the way through to Cooky, so hopefully they will inherit something that is a very professional system with a lot of good people in it.”

Super Kings made a chase of 186 look ridiculously easy in Ranchi, with Titans failing to control a rampaging top order with heavy dew around. The wet ball was a big factor and will continue to be so since the forthcoming game between Super Kings and Sunrisers begins late in the evening. Chasing might not be a bad idea and as allrounder Albie Morkel said on the eve of the game, the toss will be a big factor.Sunrisers’ chase against Trinidad and Tobago wasn’t as clinical, since it went down to the final over. Shikhar Dhawan played only a minor role though it was good from Sunrisers’ perspective that the lower order proved themselves when a challenge presented itself. Thisara Perera’s fearless hitting made the difference and Super Kings would have to strategise how to contain the big hitters like Perera and Darren Sammy. However, Sunrisers weren’t their sharpest in the field on Tuesday and that’s an area they need to improve on.Super Kings will be concerned that their bowlers leaked 185. They have relied on spinners to pull the run-rate back but against Titans, seven overs of spin cost them 85 runs.In the spotlightDwayne Bravo’s cameo 38 off 26 balls helped Super Kings edge closer to victory against Titans and he picked up two wickets as well as Titans looked to accelerate towards the end. However, he has struggled as a death bowler in recent one-dayers for West Indies, something he had admitted needed plenty of improvement. His first two overs against Titans went for 23, but he came back well in his next two, conceding 11 and taking those two wickets. He could use the ongoing T20s to sharpen his death-bowling skills.Sunrisers’ younger Indian batsmen have yet to shine in this tournament, starting from the qualifiers. Biplab Samantray, batting in the top order, was dropped after scores of 0 and 8; Hanuma Vihari made a cautious 18-ball 13 against T&T, and in the same match Ashish Reddy was out for a first-ball duck. Teams that aren’t overdependent on overseas players and bigger names tend to be more successful than others. Mohammad Hafeez is quite likely to be axed from Pakistan’s Test squad given his poor showing in the format this year but, Hafeez said, he couldn’t complain if that happened and it would be part and parcel of the game. A lack of first-class game time, he said, has contributed to his woes, but he still believes he is “one big innings” away from establishing himself in Test cricket.”It’s not a bad patch, it’s not form too,” Hafeez said in Lahore. “It happens in cricket, you try your best but sometimes you can’t perform in a particular format. It’s not a matter of technique even, the ball is coming on to my bat but I am not able to play a big innings. It happens with any big cricketer.”Hafeez has aggregated 102 runs in 10 Test innings this year, and his biggest struggle was the three-match Test series against South Africa in February. That signaled the start of his current slump, as he was doing reasonably well since being recalled in 2010 after a three-year gap. In South Africa, he was exposed against moving ball and became Dale Steyn’s bunny. On the recent trip to Zimbabwe, he remained off-color in the Tests, scoring 59 in four innings despite being the Man of the Series in the ODIs.He cited Pakistan’s lack of Test matches as a major hurdle for him to turn his form around: “If you look at Test series we played against South Africa six months ago, we didn’t play first-class cricket [until the Zimbabwe series this month], so it’s a lengthy gap and it’s not easy to adapt yourself in the format after such lengthy gap. But yes it’s not an excuse, I admit that in the previous five Test matches my performance has not been good and I am concerned about it.”Given his current form, Hafeez says he will accept his fate – whatever it be – when the squad is announced. “I am playing well in the other formats and it’s not like that I am not doing the handwork, but maybe I need to be doing more handwork. I am just one big inning away from being settled in the format. But the selectors’ job is to pick the best team for Pakistan, if they think my place is there in the team, they will pick me, otherwise I will accept their decision.”Hafeez, 32, is currently the captain of Pakistan’s Twenty20 team. He scored 665 runs at 23.75 as a T20 opener but his batting average started to rise after dropping to No. 3 – this year, in four matches at the position he has averaged 52.00. When asked if he would bat down the order to find his rhythm in Tests, Hafeez said: “It’s not my decision, to decide whether to bat lower down the order. I am always ready to play at whatever the number they want me to play at, but it’s the decision of team management.”

Not only that, but it was also the best innings of the lot, according to Pujara, because it was the center of such frenzied attention and answer to so many expectations. Add to it, the emotion itself of being near the end of what you have loved and done all your adult life.”I would say Sachin’s innings was the best because he was playing his last game and it is not easy to focus and concentrate,” Pujara said. “There is a lot of nervousness, and the way crowd was supporting – it was good on the crowd’s part – but when you are in the middle it is difficult to concentrate so I would rate Sachin’s innings as the best.”It is not easy to stay calm when you are playing your last game. I think there was a lot of expectation from him since he was playing in Mumbai and it was his last Test match. Pujara was the fortunate one to have batted with Tendulkar throughout what seems like Tendulkar’s last innings in Test cricket. “It was a very good partnership,” he said. “Initially it was very difficult for me to concentrate because there was a lot of noise from the crowd, and I was just coming, and I didn’t face any balls. He faced the first ball before me because [M] Vijay got out. He told me to just stay focussed. Once I played a few balls it was easy for me to bat then.”When the partnership did end, it left Pujara asking for more, but not dejected. “It was disappointing but the way he batted I think it was really amazing to see him score those runs,” Pujara said. “I always feel that he is always determined to score, and he might be as determined as he might have been in his first game and there are many things to learn from Sachin.”Tendulkar’s final intangible stamp on the Indian batting might have come in his last nets session. Over to Pujara for more. “Actually, the conversation was that I was not playing well in the nets to the balls going through me,” he said. “I was struggling against the outswingers in the nets a bit so he told me that my right shoulder is opening up a bit, and I should be a bit side on. He also told me to have a little bigger stride, and I tried doing it once I finished my nets and it helped. But I think initially, as I said earlier, it was difficult to concentrate and keep all these things in mind so I tried working it out in the nets and I think it helped me a bit.”There was praise for fellow-centurion Rohit too. “I felt that the way VVS Laxman used to bat with the tail, he has done the same thing,” Pujara said. “It was not easy to score runs. He was batting on 50 or 60 [44] when we were eight down, and from there onwards to score a hundred it is a big achievement. And he has started off well, even in the first Test match so he is in good form. He has done well in the ODI format also, so I think he is doing really well.”
