Jack Clarke, the departing Cricket Australia chairman, has marked his final days in the post by defending the performances of the outgoing chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch and the former national coach Tim Nielsen.Wally Edwards, the former Australia batsman, will take over at the conclusion of CA’s board meeting on Friday, as Clarke ends a tenure that started in 2008.Speaking at CA’s annual general meeting in Melbourne, Clarke said Hilditch in particular had been the victim of “unfair media and public criticism” during his time as head of the selection panel, which began in 2006.”Andrew Hilditch, a fine servant of Australian cricket who has responded graciously to unfair media and public criticism, leaves centre stage following a long period as a selector since 1996-97 and as chairman of the National Selection Panel since 2006,” Clarke said. “Having recommended that the role become full-time, he has stood aside to concentrate on his private legal practice.”During Andrew’s time as a selector, Australian cricket achieved unparalleled success including three ICC World Cups, two ICC Champions Trophies and numerous Test series victories.”Clarke also argued that many of Nielsen’s achievements, since becoming the head coach in 2007, had been “overlooked”.”Tim’s achievements as coach in a difficult period of transition following the retirement of so many champions of the game have largely been overlooked,” Clarke said. “He ensured we remained the No.1-ranked ODI team, guided the T20 outfit to the final of the 2010 ICC World T20 in the West Indies and won nine out of 15 Test series, and drew two other series.”Clarke was the first CA chairman to hold the position full-time and so spend a far greater share of time as a figurehead for cricket in Australia but also CA’s representative on the ICC executive board. In 2010 Clarke was behind a bid to have John Howard installed as the ICC’s vice-president and ultimately president, and was bitterly disappointed when the move was blocked by other nations, in apparent defiance of the ICC’s previously adopted policy of accepting the nomination of member countries on a rotational basis.Looking over the ICC’s future, Clarke said the issues of corruption and governance had to be tackled firmly.”Stepping down as CA chairman also means standing down as CA’s representative on the ICC board,” Clarke said. “The ICC has had a challenging year tackling corruption as a major issue and is also undertaking a governance review. Cricket’s ambition to be a major world sport will be significantly influenced by the ICC succeeding with both these issues.”Describing the final 12 months of his chairmanship as a “year in review”, Clarke expressed satisfaction that numerous changes had been wrought in the quest for sustainable success for both the national team and the game in Australia. He also said the review of Australian cricket’s governance, being conducted by David Crawford and Colin Carter, would be in a position to submit its findings by the end of the year.”While Australian cricket is often judged by its Ashes performances and Test cricket more generally, the reality is that CA has numerous other strategic aims that we use to measure success,” Clarke said. “Winning the Ashes is naturally a priority but it is not the sole focus.”Growing participation levels to ensure cricket’s future and ensuring cricket remains accessible and attractive to all Australians is equally as important as our Test results. It is also critical that cricket generates sufficient revenue to appropriately fund the game at all levels.”

Ailing Watson puts Copeland in the frame

Trent Copeland agrees a bleak injury prognosis for Shane Watson has greatly enhanced his chances of taking part in the first Test against New Zealand

‘I want to be in the best XI at all times, not just when people are injured’•AFP

Though Trent Copeland does not want to be considered Australian cricket’s best reserve, he agrees a bleak injury prognosis for Shane Watson has greatly enhanced his chances of taking part in the first Test against New Zealand in Brisbane.Having performed creditably in his first three Tests in Sri Lanka, Copeland found himself out of the team in South Africa, shaded first by Peter Siddle and later Pat Cummins. However the likelihood of Watson’s hamstring strain keeping him out of the Gabba Test means that Copeland’s knack for long spells will be valuable to a team lacking an allrounder. His ability to field in the slips, where Watson is usually posted, is another useful attribute.”That does help, and now I’m not in the XI, it may give me an extra opportunity,” Copeland told ESPNcricinfo. “But I certainly don’t look at it that way, I want to be in the best XI at all times, not just when people are injured.”In Sri Lanka I was picked where there was not one bowler in Australia injured but I was able to be in the best XI for three Tests. Provided the right situation occurs and the right conditions are there, then I’m still in the mix no matter who’s fit or who’s firing and all that kind of stuff.”Copeland will turn out for New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia at the SCG from Friday, having been ruled ineligible for Australia A’s fixture against New Zealand, beginning a day earlier, due to his 12th man duties in Johannesburg.Originally ruled out of the Shield fixture as well as the tour match, Copeland was given permission to play a match ahead of the Gabba Test by Australia’s captain Michael Clarke.”Talking common sense as he does, he thought this Shield game starts the when the Test squad gets named and it is a good opportunity if I’m in that squad to get some match practice in beforehand, having bowled in the nets for quite a while the last couple of weeks,” Copeland said. “If I’m not in the squad then it gives me the opportunity to take some wickets and put my name back up in lights.”The scheduling quirk may also work in Copeland’s favour, for Ben Cutting, Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson and Ben Hilfenhaus were given some harsh treatment by Brendon McCullum at Allan Border Field. The match at the SCG is set to be played on a green tinged pitch due to a series of downpours in Sydney over the past week, and Copeland said his objectives were singular – making sure his control was at the precise level it needed to be to conquer international batsmen.”I want to go through the things I want to achieve, and whether I take no wickets or 10 wickets I’m not too fussed about that,” Copeland said. “It’s about being comfortable, ticking the boxes and getting preparation right in terms of building pressure, and when I want to bowl the ball in a certain spot that I actually land it there. My main asset is my control and my persistence and that sort of stuff, so I just want to be able to execute that well this week.”Copeland’s time on boundary’s edge in South Africa made him a keen observer of others, as he learned how best to meet the needs of the playing XI. But it also filled him with motivation to return to the team, on merit as well as through injuries to others.”You can’t help but learn things about how other people cope in pressure situations and how you can help and how you can contribute as the 12th, 13th, 14th man on tour,” Copeland said. “I learned a lot about that, but it also gives you the drive to get back into the team so you don’t have to do that, you can just worry about your own performances and helping the team win the game.”The Wanderers victory was significant for many reasons, not least the emergence of Pat Cummins, but Copeland disagreed with the contention that a defeat would have sent the team into another spiral of self-doubt and poor results.”It is probably a catalyst for good things to happen,” Copeland said. “The question has been posed that it was a necessary win and really we were on the brink of bad things and all this kind of stuff, but you wouldn’t feel that if you’re in the group. Michael Clarke’s got a very positive attitude about things, and honestly believes we’re on the cusp of good things, and so do I.”We weren’t far off producing a really good first Test, apart from that second innings batting display, and we really turned it around in the second Test and unearthed a potential superstar in Pat Cummins. There’s good things happening all around the place, everyone wants to get better every day, and no doubt Mickey Arthur is going to help that. It could prove to be one of those summers where Australian cricket turns a corner.”

Mano Menezes garante rodízio entre jogadores do Cruzeiro

MatériaMais Notícias

O técnico Mano Menezes está completando dois anos no comando do Cruzeiro. O treinador dirigiu a equipe celeste em134 jogos.

No segundo, Scarpa roubou a bola no ataque e acionou Artur, que fez o goleiro trabalhar e viu Bruno conferir no rebote.

Rohit ready should he be picked

Rohit Sharma has said that he is mentally ready should he be asked to make his Test debut at the SCG on Tuesday

Rohit Sharma has said that he is mentally ready should he be asked to make his Test debut at the SCG on Tuesday. If he is asked to play, it will be in the place of Virat Kohli, who has scored 107 runs in seven Test innings away from home. Kohli was dropped after a disappointing tour of the West Indies, and then scored two fifties against the same side when recalled for a home Test. In the first Test of this series, he scored 11 and 0.Rohit said he has to stay mentally prepared all through the tour, even if he doesn’t get a game. “Of course [I’m ready],” he said. “I don’t want to be unprepared. My preparation has to be 100%. It doesn’t matter if I am playing or not. Preparation has to always be the same. I have to be ready [to play] each and every time. Because you never know, somebody might get injured on the day of the Test. You have to be ready.”Rohit should know about injuries on the morning of a Test: one he suffered during the warm-ups cost him his Test debut in Nagpur, against South Africa, in early 2010. Under MS Dhoni, India have been known to given players a decent run before dropping them, if required. Keeping that in mind, smart money has to be on Kohli getting another chance. They haven’t been told either way as of now. “As far as the team combination is concerned, we have not decided anything yet,” Rohit said. “Maybe tomorrow we will have a better idea as to what the wicket will be like. Probably by tomorrow I will be told whether I am playing or not.”Rohit said the morale in the team is “very good” right now. “We really had a good time off,” he said. “We had a team get-together yesterday, which was nice. And we got back again today to see how we are going to take it forward. We don’t want to think about what has happened. We need to focus on what we have to do now. The process is still on. Hopefully things will turn around for us.”We spoke about what went wrong, and what we need to do, and stuff like that. Which always happens, whether you win or lose. That is nothing new for us. As I said, we need to keep doing the right things.”Rohit gave credit to the Australian bowlers for their performance at the MCG, but denied the notion that the Indian batsmen might be shaken up or intimidated. “Not shaken up,” he said. “They really bowled well, we need to accept that. Our batters also batted well in the first innings, but somehow we didn’t manage that in the second. Credit goes to their bowlers.”

Mohsin defends Misbah's safety-first approach

Mohsin Khan, the acting Pakistan coach, has come out in defence of captain Misbah-ul-Haq’s tactics that have been perceived as defensive by some, saying that his safety-first approach is due to the fear of failure

Mohsin Khan: “At his age, Misbah still worries about the fact that if he fails in one or two matches, the critics will be after him and he could be dropped”•AFP

Mohsin Khan, the acting Pakistan coach, has come out in defence of captain Misbah-ul-Haq’s tactics that have been perceived as defensive by some, saying that his safety-first approach is due to the fear of failure. Misbah, 37, was handed the reins after the spot-fixing controversy, and while his methods did not always make for attractive cricket, they shephered Pakistan through one of their most successful years across formats.”I think you have to understand that at his age he still worries about the fact that if he fails in one or two matches the critics will be after him and he could be dropped,” Mohsin said in an exclusive interview with television channel . “That is why he at times tends to play it safe. But he has gained in confidence as a captain, and I have been trying to tell him to not think about these things and just focus on doing what he is doing best at the moment: leading the team by example.”Misbah’s stint as captain began with a tough Test assignment late last year against South Africa in the UAE. Few gave the depleted Pakistan side – sans Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif – a chance, but they held South Africa to a creditable 0-0 draw. Misbah then oversaw a 1-0 Test series win in New Zealand, and played an integral part in the ODI series triumph on the same tour, under Shahid Afridi’s captaincy.Pakistan exceeded expectations to reach the World Cup semi-finals, and continued with their winning ways in the West Indies, though Shahid Afridi had a fall-out with the team management. Pakistan won the one-day leg and came back to square the Tests 1-1. After that tour, Misbah was handed the reins of the limited-overs side as well, and led Pakistan to victories in all formats against Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The winning run in Tests was set up by the solid, if unexciting, methods of Taufeeq Umar, Younis Khan, Azhar Ali and Misbah himself, with Mohammad Hafeez the only free-flowing scorer in the top order.Mohsin was full of praise for Misbah’s leadership methods. “I think Misbah is an intelligent player and composed captain, and he communicates well with the players. He has also quickly picked up the confidence to push for victories, plus he is batting extremely well. I tell him to just go out and get runs and don’t waste any innings. He has served Pakistan cricket very well.”Mohsin also explained that his role as coach was to focus on the mental aspect of the game and ensure he got the maximum out of the side, rather than spoon-feed his players on the skills front. “I think I have got along well with the players in the team. People need to understand that nowadays the job of a coach is to mentally make his players stronger, and just guide them and discuss strategies with them. A coach is a planner. I don’t think you can teach anything more in batting terms to Misbah or Younis at this stage.”I have told the players that being professionals we are also supposed to deliver; no compromises on that. My mantra is to give your 100% on the field; win or lose, that is part of the sport. Millions of people pray for our success and we shouldn’t let them feel we let them down or didn’t try hard enough.”
