Vettori pragmatic after defeat

Daniel Vettori did not look like his world has crashed around him, but was able to put the loss in perspective

Firdose Moonda in Colombo29-Mar-2011The Daniel Vettori who turned up at the post-match conference after the semi-final was not the Daniel Vettori that was expected to turn up. He was not grumpy, annoyed or irritable. He was not overly disappointed, he did not look like his world has crashed around him, or even like a small part of it was destroyed. For the sixth time, New Zealand have exited the tournament at the semi-final stage and they have never reached a World Cup final. Vettori would have had every right to appear upset, heartbroken and gutted, as he looked on the field when Thilan Samaraweera hit the winning runs. By the time the media conference came around, 15 or so minutes later, he had dried his eyes and put the loss in perspective. “I can only speak for this team, I can’t speak for the teams of yesteryear and we just came up short,” he said, pragmatic as you like. The coming up short started with the bat. New Zealand lost 6 for 25 runs at the end of their innings, including a dramatic 4 for 4, and were bowled out for 217. Already, they knew they were on the ropes. “We thought we were 20 to 30 runs short,” Vettori said, although he maintained that he had made the correct decision by choosing to bat first. “Our top order came up short and against the Sri Lankan bowling it was tough to recover.”Despite a below-par batting performance New Zealand – known for their ability to fight, and just four days after defending 221 in spectacular fashion against South Africa – may have gone into the field thinking they would do it again. For that, they would need the batting side to play along, but Sri Lanka were no South Africa, and made it difficult for New Zealand to repeat their giant-killing performance. “Our whole game plan was to try and get them three down,” Vettori said.New Zealand go out, not embarrassed or humiliated, but like their captain, proud of about what they achieved•AFP

By the time that three down happened, Sri Lanka were only 57 away from victory and had formed enough of a solid base for the rest of the order to build on. Kumar Sangakkara was still at the crease, looking as composed as ever and the inroads New Zealand made were not enough to cause an upset. “The [Tillakaratne] Dilshan and Sangakkara partnership went on too long,” Vettori said of the 120 runs the pair put on for the second wicket. That was the partnership that put the match beyond New Zealand’s reach and the only way they could get it back was to grab and pull with all they had. “When the opposition has to chase at less than 6 runs to the over, you have to get wickets and we were all about taking wickets and breaking partnerships. But we couldn’t break the sixth wicket partnership.” That stand, of 35 runs, between Samaraweera and Angelo Mathews won the match for Sri Lanka but had it been broken, it would have opened up the tail for New Zealand.Mathews joined Samaraweera at the crease with the score on 185 for 5, still needing 33 to win and with the required-rate nudging its way towards a run a ball. Southee had just completed a maiden over but instead of applying pressure on the other end as well, Vettori allowed Jesse Ryder, who had just conceded nine runs in his first over, to continue. “I needed to get through some overs, Jesse was in the game already,” Vettori explained. He was not going to go as far as laying blame on anyone, even young Southee, who persisted with short balls towards the end of the Sri Lankan innings, which the Sri Lankan were not too afraid off. “Short bowling is a good plan but you have to bowl in the right areas. Tim Southee has had a great tournament and I can’t blame him.” Vettori has praise for the whole team’s effort saying he was “impressed” with the way they fielded. If there was a hint of sadness in going home and not to Mumbai, he didn’t let it show. Perhaps it’s because the performance the team had in this World Cup has been better than the showing they’ve had in the last nine months, when they lost four ODI series to subcontinental sides. Perhaps because it gives him such a boost to be able sign off from the captaincy on this note, knowing that the team has regained its ability to fight.”Obviously we are incredibly disappointed. We fought so hard to stay in the tournament,” he said. It was that determined fight that sees New Zealand go out, not embarrassed or humiliated, but like their captain, proud of about what they achieved and realistic about what they hope to do in the future.

Jefferson, 48 overnight, reached his 50 with two early singles and then took successive boundaries off Robert Croft to bring up the 100 partnership. The opener looked in excellent touch, timing the ball well – particularlythrough the offside. Two more fours off Dean Cosker took Jefferson to 100 off180 balls with 12 boundaries. Although it was his third century for Leicestershire, it was the first he had scored at Grace Road.Naik was providing solid support and reached 50 off 128 balls with eight fours, before the partnership was broken shortly after lunch. Jefferson, looking to drive off the back foot against Adam Shantry, edged a low catch to Michael Powell at slip having made 112 off 213 balls.Naik was out a few overs later, snared at short leg off the bowling of RobertCroft. But he had done an outstanding job for his side, hitting 10 fours in his179-ball innings. The last three wickets added another 35 runs before Cosker had captain MatthewHoggard leg before wicket, leaving Glamorgan a challenging target of 338 on apitch starting to show some variable bounce.Cosker was again Glamorgan’s most successful bowling finishing with 4for 50, while Graham Wagg claimed 3 for 59.Gareth Rees and Alviro Petersen gave Glamorgan a solid start to the run chaseuntil both were out in the space of four balls with the score on 43.Petersen was first to go, trapped lbw by a Nadeem Malik yorker, then Rees thenchopped the third delivery of the next over from Claude Henderson back into hisstumps.Bragg and Powell carefully set about rebuilding the innings and looked to havesucceeded with a stand of 64 until, in the penultimate over of the day, Naik hadWill Bragg lbw for 43 to give Leicestershire the edge in what looks like being atight finish.

Diego sentiu dores no joelho direito no primeiro tempo contra o Ceará, no Castelão.

Confira no vídeo abaixo:

O elenco do Flamengo volta a treinar na terça, às 15h30, no Ninho do Urubu.

Wells makes most of final day with ton

Sussex youngster Luke Wells took the opportunity of an County Championship match heading nowhere to score his second century of the season

07-May-2011Sussex 438 and 254 for 6 dec drew with Hampshire 480
ScorecardSussex youngster Luke Wells took the opportunity of an County Championshipmatch heading nowhere to score his second century of the season at the Rose Bowlwhere another easy-paced pitch led to a dramaless last day against Hampshire.Sussex predictably batted through before declaring their second innings 212ahead at 254 for 6, leaving Hampshire no time to respond. The visitors began the day 42 behind after each side had completed their first innings over the first three days and a draw seemed inevitable.Ed Joyce and Chris Nash put on 32 for the first wicket before slow left-armerDanny Briggs took the first of his four wickets. Joyce mistimed a sweep and top edged Briggs to square leg where Friedel de Wet clutched the opportunity.Wells signalled his intentions on arrival with a straight six off Briggs and itbecame clear the match was petering out when Sussex went in at lunch with a leadof 66 at 108 for 1. Briggs, who got through another marathon spell of 30 overs spread across the innings, struck again at 124 when Nash, who had hit six fours in his 56, choppedthe ball onto his stumps.Nash and Wells had put on 92 for the second wicket to make sure there were noalarms and the afternoon session brought little respite for the Hampshirebowlers. Murray Goodwin, the Sussex captain, was the third to go at 157, curiouslyoffering no shot to a delivery from Briggs and being bowled via the top of his pad.Five balls later De Wet struck for the first time when he had Ben Brown caughtat the wicket with the score 158 but there was still no real hope forHampshire. Wells, who made 103 earlier in the season, reached his century off 169 balls, hitting 11 fours in addition to his six.But Wells failed to go on and beat his previous best score because at 248 andhaving faced only another seven balls, Wells drove Sean Ervine to James Vincefor exactly 100.Wells and Luke Wright had put on 90 for the fifth wicket to make the game safeand by then the few spectators were already heading home. Wright perished soon afterwards, edging Briggs to Jimmy Adams after making 39 soon afterwards Goodwin decided to call a halt.Briggs was rewarded with figures of 4 for 99 as the match fell away. Hampshire, still looking for their first Division One win of the season in four attempts, finished with nine points and Sussex took seven back home along the south coast.

Meus pais e empresários me deixam tranquilo.

Hales and Wessels set up Nottinghamshire win

Openers Alex Hales and Riki Wessels both hit half-centuries as Nottinghamshire Outlaws took another step towards the quarter-finals of the Friends Life t20 by thrashing Lancashire Lightning by 53 runs

26-Jun-2011
ScorecardOpeners Alex Hales and Riki Wessels both hit half-centuries as Nottinghamshire Outlaws took another step towards the quarter-finals of the Friends Life t20 by thrashing Lancashire Lightning by 53 runs. The pair put on 85 for the first wicket before Hales was bowled for 60 – his fourth 50 of the competition – off 38 balls with seven fours and two sixes, but Wessels went on to make 76 from 49 balls with five fours and four sixes in a total of 184 for 4.That proved enough for the hosts to extend their lead at the top of the North Group as Lancashire were bowled out for 131 in 18 overs, Andre Adams taking two for 19 in his first appearance in the competition this season. Steven Croft’s 55 off 28 balls was the only Lancashire highlight, but after he fell to former Lancashire all-rounder Steven Mullaney, the visitors slipped quickly to their fifth defeat in 10 matches.Hales was the faster of the two Notts batsmen out of the blocks as he hit two fours off the first over of the match from Simon Kerrigan, before taking three consecutive boundaries off Junaid Khan’s second over. He also pulled Sajid Mahmood for six and hit Stephen Parry for a straight maximum before the left-arm spinner got his revenge, bowling Hales in the 11th over.Wessels had just been dropped by Stephen Moore having scored 21 and went on to make the visitors pay for their miss. Adam Voges drove Parry to long-off for 17 and although Khan yorked Wessels in the 18th over, the damage had already been done.Lancashire’s hopes took an immediate dent when Moore was brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Chris Read, flying to his right for a catch off Darren Pattinson. Croft kept Lancashire up with the required rate but could not find a partner to stay with him as Tom Smith and Farveez Maharoof were both caught off miscued shots. And when Croft himself failed to clear extra cover, the rest of the Lancashire batting collapsed, Mullaney claiming 2 for 23 and Graeme White 2 for 26.
