Flintoff erases 34 years of hurt

Sessay from Yorkshire cruised to a seven-wicket victory over previous champions Shipton to win the npower Village Cup in front of an enthusiastic crowd at a sun-drenched Lord’s

Martin Williamson at Lord's12-Sep-2010 Sessay 228 for 3 (Wilkie 78, Till 56) beat Shipton-under-Wychwood 227 for 5 (Hemming 59) by seven wicketsJohn Flintoff and Nick Harrison celebrate Sessay ‘s winning runs•Martin Williamson

Sessay from Yorkshire cruised to a seven-wicket victory over previous champions Shipton-under-Wychwood from Oxfordshire to win the npower Village Cup in front of an enthusiastic crowd at a sun-drenched Lord’s. No side had successfully chased a target as big as 228 in the previous 38 finals, but Sessay did so at a canter with 17 balls to spare. After a few weeks where cricket has made the headlines for all the wrong reasons, this contest allowed traditionalists to argue the game still has its moments. The pre-match build-up had centred on 55-year-old John Flintoff who had been playing for Sessay for four decades. Back in 1976 he had to miss Sessay’s only previous appearance in a Village Cup final because of injury, but 34 years later he finally got another chance. It was fitting that he was in the middle when the winning runs were hit.Shipton, who came into the game as favourites, won here in 2002 and 2003 and seven of that side from the second victory played again today. While that experience held them in good stead, in the field they at times looked to be carrying a few passengers, and while that was not the difference between the sides, it made it very hard for them to sustain pressure on the Sessay batsmen at key points. But with the exception of Chris Panter, Shipton’s front-line bowlers never settled, and Paul Hemming found himself having to replace Craig Lambert and Charlie Brain after two overs each as both sprayed the new ball around. Thereafter, Hemming relied almost entirely on his spinners but while better, they too lacked consistency. After a circumspect start, Sessay’s openers Mark Wilkie and Matthew Till capitalised on the wayward bowling, aided by a liberal sprinkling of wides and misfields. Wilkie, who had spent a spell as an MCC Young Cricketer at Lord’s, accumulated steadily with some neat strokeplay off his pads. Had Paul Jennings stumped him early on off a routine chance the game could have taken a very different path. Till, meanwhile, used his reach well and hit anything short or wide with increasing power through the off side.Shipton-under-Wychwood’s Andy Hemming is spectacularly caught by Nick Harrison off Richard Till for 59•Martin Williamson

The opening stand of 127 ended when Till fell to a juggling catch by Tim Senior on the deep square-leg boundary for a 54-ball 56, but Man of the Match Wilkie continued to press on, and by the time he top-edged a sweep for 78 the game was all but won.Nick Thorne quashed any lingering Yorkshire hopes with 42 from 38 deliveries, and his departure, stumped down the leg side, brought in Flintoff. Hemming crowded the bat to try to put added pressure on the veteran, but he responded with two cracking off-side boundaries to take his side to the brink of victory. It fell to Nick Harrison to hit the winning runs, but Flintoff understandably led the celebrations like a man half his age.Earlier on, Shipton, who had been stuck in on a green pitch, made a solid start but Andy Hemming and Charlie Brain took their time to build any momentum ahead against some tight bowling and enthusiastic fielding. It took them ten overs to pass 30 and another eight to reach 60, but thereafter the scoring rate steadily increased. The breakthrough which ended the 88-run first-wicket stand was unfortunate, Hemming’s defensive shot trickling back into his stumps and barely dislodging a bail, and then Brain was well caught by a sprawling Harrison, one of the wicketkeeper’s three dismissals.Steve Bates upped the tempo with Tim Senior, but it was the arrival of Jason Hunt that really silenced the outnumbered Sessay support. On the extreme end of burly, he slammed five sixes off the first eight balls he faced, four over the short leg-side boundary on the Tavern side and a slashed cover drive into the Mound Stand. Had he stayed he could have put the game out of reach in a matter of overs; as it was, he scored 38 off 13 balls before unwisely trying to use his feet and being stumped.Bates kept attacking as the last ten overs produced 99 runs and enabled Shipton to post the fourth-highest score in a final. It appeared to be more than enough, but Flintoff had not waited all those years to be denied.

Yuvraj Singh has signalled his return to form with a blistering double-century for Rest of India against Mumbai on the fourth day of the Irani Cup in Jaipur. Yuvraj, who has lost his place in the Test side to Suresh Raina, missed out in the first innings when six of his team-mates made scores of 72 or more. His unbeaten 204 virtually shut Mumbai out of the game, setting them the gargantuan target of 782. Yuvraj was particularly pleased with his knock as it come on the back of a period of injuries and bad form – and 12 months without an international century – which he has termed his “toughest year”.”I wanted to be back in form after long lay-off due to injury. I am happy that I did it,” Yuvraj said at the end of the day’s play. “I was just trying to play straight in the initial phase and had resolved to post a big score. I was trying to play on the merit of the ball. The pitch was nice and the ball was coming nicely onto the bat.”Rest of India had gained a 394-run first-innings lead but Yuvraj had decided not to enforce the follow-on, a decision which has been criticised by former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, who felt the move was an indicator that teams on the domestic circuit don’t push hard enough for wins.Yuvraj, though, defended his decision. “The pitch is flat and I feel it was very difficult to get opponents out twice on such a surface,” he said. “Our bowlers were too tired so I thought of giving them a bit of a rest and that is why we decided to bat again instead of forcing a follow-on.”Mumbai finished the day on 79 for 0, needing an outlandish 703 more to win the Irani Cup for the first time in more than 12 years.

Spurs eye up move for Paulo Dybala

Tottenham have a ‘pronounced interest’ in Juventus attacker Paulo Dybala ahead of a possible summer move and even hold one major advantage in the race.

The Lowdown: Juve icon on the way out

The 28-year-old has been a great player for Juve over the years, standing out as one of Serie A’s premier attacking players.

Dybala has scored 113 goals in 287 appearances for the Turin giants, not to mention chipping in with 48 assists, outlining the creative side of his game, all while racking up an incredible five league titles and seven domestic cups.

The Argentine’s Juve deal expires at the end of this season, however, and it looks highly likely that he will enjoy a fresh challenge after Fabrizio Romano revealed he is not expected to pen new terms.

The Latest: Spurs eye up summer move

According to But! Football Club [via Sport Witness], both Spurs and Atletico Madrid have a ‘pronounced interest’ in signing Dybala this summer.

While it is also stated that Inter Milan are the current favourites to sign him instead, the article says the fact that Fabio Paratici signed Dybala for Juve ‘could give them (Spurs) an advantage in any race, as would the presence of Antonio Conte as manager’.

The Verdict: Is he worth it?

Dybala has enjoyed an outstanding career – he was once described as a ‘great player’ by Lionel Messi, which speaks volumes – and he would be an exciting, high-profile arrival at Spurs, called a ‘world class’ and ‘massive’ would-be signing by former Lilywhite Paul Robinson.

Admittedly, the Argentina international turns 29 later this year and has had injury problems throughout his career, but he can be a sprinkling of stardust for Antonio Conte, providing match-winning moments when Harry Kane and Son Heung-min cannot.

His ability to thrive in a No.10 role could even help Son and Kane become even more potent, with his pedigree at a top European club proven over an extended period of time.

In other news, Tottenham have reportedly sent officials to watch two players. Find out who they are here.

Harbhajan stuns tenacious New Zealand

New Zealand were tenacious with the ball and spectacular in the field, but had their good work undone by VVS Laxman’s Hyderabadi stroke-play in front of his home crowd and Harbhajan Singh’s power hitting that overshadowed everything before him

The Bulletin by Sidharth Monga14-Nov-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outHarbhajan Singh’s counterattack gave India a significant first-innings lead•AFP

Harbhajan Singh packed in enough carnage in the last eighty minutes or so to leave a tenacious unit demoralised. For more than five hours, New Zealand had worked hard with the ball and had been spectacular in the field, but VVS Laxman’s Hyderabadi stroke-play in front of his home crowd and Harbhajan’s power-hitting left them stunned.New Zealand could say they managed to control the Laxman situation, getting him out before India could get into a lead, for they took the next three wickets without much delay. Harbhajan, though, went on to score 85 out of the 110 runs that came while he was at the wicket, hitting five sixes and seven fours, and had set himself up for a second century in two innings. If India weren’t leading already when Laxman was dismissed in the first over after tea, it was thanks to the flying Kiwis, Kane Williamson, Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill, who put in outrageous dive after outrageous dive to make sure the odd loose balls didn’t get the deserved punishment. That, added to Daniel Vettori’s bowling – almost like a bowling machine with a brain – and the swing from the fast bowlers with both old and new ball, had handcuffed India.Laxman tried to break free from the shackles through cultured yet outrageous shots, and Harbhajan wasn’t about raw power either. He timed the shots as well as top-order batsmen, and manoeuvred the strike too. One short of 50, he refused three singles, in order to shield Sreesanth, suggesting he had more than that landmark – his third such effort in the last three innings – on his mind. And he did have much more on his mind. Fourteen overs later, the two were still together, had added 69 runs, and had taken India to a sixth score of 400 in their last six first innings. As the last-wicket stand went on and on, New Zealand toiled away cluelessly, their shirts out of their trousers, their tired faces telling the story of a hard-fought day, and the Indian batsmen, dressed up to take the field, waited. It’s possible they would have looked back and thought how for the best part of the first two sessions, such free-flowing batting hadn’t seemed possible.New Zealand began the day with a big deficit in prospect, but managed to delay that possibility. Not through defensive fields, but through controlled aggression. Their ground fielding was backed by Ross Taylor’s one-handed blinder to remove Sachin Tendulkar.A sign of intent came through their taking the new ball the moment it became available, despite how they had rendered stroke-play difficult with the old one. The new ball worked through good swing bowling from Tim Southee, who trapped Rahul Dravid with one that shaped to swing away but went on with the angle after pitching. Thirty-nine overs until then had yielded just 81 runs.Smart Stats

Harbhajan Singh now has 269 runs in his last three innings with two fifties and a hundred. He averages over 24 at No.8 with a century and five fifties.

Since March 26 2009, VVS Laxman has aggregated 1219 runs in 13 Tests at an average of 81.26 with 3 centuries and 11 fifties. In 6 wins during the same period, he averages over 115.

In his last seven Tests, MS Dhoni averages just 22 with one fifty. He has been dismissed below 20 on six occasions.

The unbeaten 69 run stand between Harbhajan and S Sreesanth is the fifth highest for India for the tenth wicket overall and the second highest in home Tests.

Harbhajan, with five sixes in his unbeaten 85, stands fourth in the list of Indian batsmen with the most sixes in a Test innings.

India have scored more than 300 in the team first innings in six of the last seven Tests. They have won three Tests and lost one of the previous six.

Unlike Dravid and Tendulkar, though, Lamxan struck the ball cleanly even though he struggled for a healthy strike-rate. He wasted little time in hitting two crunchy boundaries off Martin, but a combination of smart field-sets and sharp fielding kept Laxman quiet. With time, though, Laxman started finding the gaps, especially with the new ball. The turnaround perhaps began with the straight flick from wide outside off, off Brent Arnel, taking him to 37 off 97. Then the bat face opened precisely with cover-drives, the wrists started turning precisely to beat the field on the on side, and just to reiterate that we were in Hyderabad, that straight-flick from wide outside off was repeated. He was now 70 off 141.New Zealand hadn’t yet given up. They latched onto the opening given by Suresh Raina, who lofted Vettori into a densely populated on side, with 10 minutes to go to tea. They rediscovered the enthusiasm that Laxman had almost suppressed. In Vettori’s next over, McCullum and Williamson went diving to save two boundaries. In the first over after tea, Martin removed Laxman with a ball that jagged back in from back of a length. The next three wickets came without much fuss either side of a rain break, but by then Harbhajan smacked a couple, had an odd edge land safe, and was about to stun New Zealand. Immediately after Pragyan Ojha ran himself out, Harbhajan took the matters into his own hands. He danced down and lofted Vettori over long-on for back-to-back sixes to spread the field all over the place. Then Harbhajan began farming strike, batting like a proper batsman. New Zealand’s response was to bounce Sreesanth when Southee got a full over at him, hitting the No. 11 thrice. Still Harbhajan stayed away from reckless hitting, and decided to take the fast bowlers on himself, letting Sreesanth face spin. And some taking on he did. He walked down to Arnel and lofted him for a dead-straight four, then pulled him for a six, and slogged him over midwicket when the field came up for the last ball. There was no pattern in there that New Zealand could plan for. A slog would be followed by a proper shot, and Vettori ran out of ideas.Harbhajan wasn’t sated, and cajoled old friend Sreesanth to stay with him till stumps. Given the tired faces, the only consolation for New Zealand perhaps was that their openers didn’t have to face an awkward spell of 20 minutes.

Rangers: Van Bronckhorst should offload Niko Katic

With Giovanni van Bronckhorst surely rebuilding the Rangers squad over the summer as his first full season approaches, it could look like Niko Katic will be one player that departs the club.

The Croatian was signed by the previous manager for £2m from Slaven Belupo during his first transfer window in charge of the Ibrox side, becoming his fifth signing.

Over his first two seasons, Katic featured on a regular basis under Gerrard without ever setting the world alight. Such were his dismal performances that he was picked up a dreadful WhoScored average match rating of 6.32 and 6.49 in back to back European campaigns.

The £9k-a-week defender’s finest moment came when he scored the winner against Celtic at Parkhead in December 2019 which ended the club’s nine-year away drought over their rivals.

The 25-year-old suffered a season-ending injury in the summer of 2020 which ruled him out of the entirety of the Ibrox side’s historic Scottish Premiership winning campaign.

A loan spell to Hajduk Split in his native Croatia has enabled him to get back to fitness, featuring 25 times in all competitions and leading Hajduk to the Croatian Cup final.

The stark reality, however, is it looks like he has played his last match for Rangers.

Although Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be looking to analyse the players who are out on loan, the club has a strong contingent of centre backs. Add to the fact John Souttar will be joining from Hearts before next season and with interest in Vitesse defender Danilho Doekhi not fading away, then it could be time to cut ties.

He became a fan favourite during his first two seasons at the club, but with him being a decent earner, van Bronckhorst might just want to get him off the wage bill and bring in some funds to boost other areas of the squad. When you consider his annual salary and transfer fee, this certainly feels like £3.3m down the drain.
