The Jamaican board has defended the innovations to be introduced in this season’s four-day first-class tournament – including day-night games – after concerns were raised about the quality of the pink balls to be used. The changes were announced last week as part of the WICB’s efforts to revive flagging interest from both spectators and sponsors in the first-class game.Jimmy Adams, the technical director of Jamaican cricket, is among those backing the experiments. “Everybody around the world is trying to do what they can to see if there is an answer to bringing more people through the gates for the levels below the international level, and in view of that I support that effort,” he told the .Adams, who is also secretary of the West Indies Players’ Association, was in favour of the limited trials over this season. Each team will play only one round of day-night teams, except for Combined Colleges and Campuses who will feature in two of them. “People may try things that you may think are outside of the box, but until you try, you won’t know, and the method that is being used here is in a controlled fashion,” he said. “It’s not as if the whole tournament is a day/night tournament. Let’s see what comes out of it.”One of the critics of the pink balls is Dudnath Ramkessoon, the chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago senior cricket selection panel, who wanted more tests done on them before they were introduced in first-class cricket. Adams acknowledged the concerns but still felt it was a worthwhile experiment. “We are concerned about the pink ball and the fact that some of these territories at night … the dew is very heavy, but you have to actually try it and then assess it or you will never know,” he said. “(With) the possibilities that could come out of it (the day/night games) I don’t see it as a bad thing.”Adams’ one complaint was that the WICB hadn’t provided the Jamaican team with pink balls for practice though the tournament is less than three weeks away. “We’ve asked the WICB if they can send us some pink balls as soon as they get them so we can get accustomed to them,” he said. “That for me is not one of the more ideal parts of this whole scenario. It would have been nice if we had the pink balls from now.”The first round of the Caribbean first-class tournament will begin in Jamaica from January 8-11 while the final round will be played at Windwards between February 26 and March 1.Day-night Tests and pink balls are concepts the ICC has been mulling over in their attempts to attract more spectators and television viewers.

Newcastle: Kennedy drops transfer claim

A huge Newcastle United transfer claim has emerged, regarding Burnley duo James Tarkowski and Ben Mee…

What’s the talk?

Magpies insider Liam Kennedy has confirmed that PIF are keen on signing both of the defenders in the January transfer window.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I know for a fact that they’re really interested in James Tarkowski and I know for a fact they’re really interested in Ben Mee.

“But the last thing in the world that these football clubs like Burnley are going to do is sell to Newcastle United.”

Delight

Newcastle fans will surely be delighted with this update as it suggests that the club are actively looking to sign experienced players to bolster the defence in January. The Magpies have struggled badly this season and are in dire need of reinforcements to give them a fighting chance of avoiding relegation down to the Championship.

Eddie Howe’s team have conceded the most goals in the division, with 41 against, and have let in five more than any other team in the league. Leeds (36) and Norwich (34) have the 19th and 18th-worst defences in the Premier League, showing just how poor the Toon Army have been at the back.

Burnley, meanwhile, have only let 21 goals in against them. That is fewer than 12 other teams in the league, which suggests that defending is not the reason they are currently in the bottom three. Tarkowski and Mee are both averaging SofaScore ratings of 7.02 or higher and have been consistent performers at the back despite the team’s struggles in terms of results.

The pair have made a combined 380 appearances in the top-flight throughout their careers, showing that they are experienced Premier League operators. Burnley’s defensive record, conceding 20 fewer than Newcastle, also suggests that they could come in and improve Howe’s backline and give them a fighting chance in the second half of the campaign, which is why fans will be buzzing by this update.

Along with strengthening their own side, Newcastle would also be weakening one of their rivals. Burnley are above them by one point as it stands and the loss of Mee and Tarkowski could cause them to struggle defensively, given their record with them in the side, and that could give Howe’s team an added edge in the battle against the drop.

Fountain keen on Pakistan fielding coach role

Julien Fountain, the English coach who has worked with West Indies and Pakistan in the past, has expressed an interest in working with the Pakistan national side again as a specialist fielding coach

Julien Fountain, the English coach who has worked with West Indies and Pakistan in the past, has expressed an interest in working with the Pakistan national side again as a specialist fielding coach.Pakistan’s fielding has all but disintegrated on the recent tours to New Zealand and Australia, with the side dropping nearly 30 catches over the course of six Tests; some of them, as in Sydney during the second Test, lost them the match. Captain Mohammad Yousuf and coach Intikhab Alam have repeatedly blamed the domestic system, arguing that the scant attention paid to the discipline in the first-class circuit means players only start to learn about fielding when they come into the national side.Though they have dismissed the idea that a fielding coach can make a difference, the PCB has refused to rule out the possibility of appointing one after the series. “We will look into all possible areas where we feel there might be a requirement,” Wasim Bari, COO PCB, told Cricinfo. “But we will only do so after this tour is over.”Fountain, a former Great Britain Olympic baseball player, and a qualified cricket coach, worked with the late Bob Woolmer and Pakistan briefly during their 2006 tour to England and with the Pakistan A side in 2001. He has also worked with England and recently, the Stanford Superstars.”Yes [I would be interested in applying] in a specialist capacity as fielding coach,” Fountain told Cricinfo. “However, I have had masses of experience in coaching batting and bowling at that level, so can add value to those departments as well. I helped Inzi [Inzamam-ul-Haq], along with lots of other players, with batting in 2006.”During his first stint with the PCB in 2001, Fountain worked with various local coaches throughout the country and he didn’t agree that all the blame lay with the first-class system. “It’s too easy to simply blame grassroots cricket,” Fountain said. “Yes, grassroots is where the players learn their game but these players aspire to the standards set by the guys playing at the top of the game.”Coaching back in Pakistan needs to be revitalised so as to encompass these high standards, so that yes when they reach the senior team it’s not a surprise. The problem needs addressing at both ends of the spectrum because if you leave the top end without assistance, it may take 5-10 years before you see tangible results. South Africa and Australia produce excellent youth players because they aspire to perform as well as the senior team. Role models get copied for better or for worse.”Pakistan’s fielding practice routines have come under scrutiny throughout the Australia tour and a number of observers in Australia felt the methods to be primitive and outdated. “I don’t think players are coming into the side and then learning how to field, because that assumes that the problem is being addressed,” Fountain said. “I believe the players are coming into the team and are being expected to field well, because other teams field well at that level. That does not address the actual issue of who is actually helping these players with the technical, tactical, physical and mental aspects of fielding.”Couple this with statistical analysis; who is keeping statistics for this department? How can you ascertain what the problems are if you cannot identify the tiniest fluctuations in performance? Hitting a few catches does not teach a player how to catch; what it does do is make them work out a technique to cope. Coping by definition means they are not moving forward, simply treading water to survive at that level. Who sets the fielding goals for these players and are they tangible and achieveable? As with any coaching, you have to identify the process, not simply the end result.”Fountain is thought to be the first coach in cricket to bring in learnings from baseball. Mike Young is another who has had similar success with the Australian team in particular and began later. Fountain believes cricket can still learn more from baseball. “Taken in the correct context, cricket can learn loads from baseball,” Fountain said. “Taken out of context by coaches simply quoting ‘They do it in baseball’ can do more harm than good. Baseball teaches its fielders correct biomechanics for each skill, correct biomechanics for accurate, powerful throwing, tactical awareness for pre-shot movements and post-shot situations, sliding, diving, relays, backing up, multiple-play scenarios, decision-making, the list is huge.”

Wolves eye up new defender in January

Wolves will look to complete the signing of a new central defender in the January transfer window, according to reliable journalist Luke Hatfield.

The Lowdown: Defender impress for Wolves

Bruno Lage’s side have enjoyed an encouraging first half of the Premier League season, sitting in the top half of the table and eyeing up European football next year.

While entertainment hasn’t always been the order of the day for Wanderers – they have only scored 13 times in 18 matches – defensively they have looked strong.

The likes of Max Kilman, Conor Coady and Romain Saiss have all performed well but it seems as though another centre-back wouldn’t go amiss, especially with Saiss due to depart for AFCON in January.

The Latest: Wanderers keen on centre-back

According to Hatfield, speaking to Give Me Sport, the heart of defence is where Wolves are most keen on strengthening next month:

“I think it’s the position (centre-back) that Wolves are most keen on addressing.”

The Verdict: Squad depth key

The aforementioned trio of Kilman, Coady and Saiss cannot be faulted this season, with Wolves only conceding 14 times in the league, but that doesn’t mean a new signing isn’t needed.

Squad depth is vital, given the relentless nature of the matches and fixture changes, and it may be that one of Wanderers’ regular back-three picks up an injury at some point.

That highlights the need for someone else to come in, with Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic a reported target and someone who could be ideal, having averaged 3.3 aerial duel wins per game this season – more than any Wolves player.

New Zealand target another uncomplicated win

Monday’s match presents New Zealand a chance to complete a quick series victory against a struggling Bangladesh

Big PictureBangladesh cricket fans looking for good news over the past week have had to follow the South Asian Games, where their Under-21 team won gold in a tournament also containing the likes of Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The senior team in New Zealand, though, has been abject in the two matches so far and were thrashed in the only Twenty20 and the first ODI in Napier. For New Zealand, Monday’s match presents a chance to complete a quick series victory. With several of their key players injured, the contests against Bangladesh are a good opportunity to test their bench strength, and Daniel Vettori will be satisfied with the performance of both the players they blooded in Napier – Peter Ingram making a steady 69 and Andy McKay nipping out two top-order batsmen. Perhaps the biggest gain from that victory was Jacob Oram showing that he had not lost his lethal hitting ability, something which has not been on view too often of late. The only redeeming features for Bangladesh were a robust opening stand between Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes, and young Shaiful Islam’s performance – four wickets, including giving away only four runs in a double-wicket over in the middle of Oram’s blitzkreig. However, unless the Bangladesh middle order gets its act together, their hunt for a maiden victory in any format in New Zealand is likely to be extended.Form guide (most recent first)New Zealand WWWLL
Bangladesh LLLLLWatch out forAt 25, Ross Taylor is already New Zealand’s most important batsman in the middle order. He was in stunning form in the domestic Twenty20 tournament in January, leading the run-charts and rounding it off with a 30-ball 80 to hand Central Districts the title. Bangladesh have already had a taste of how dangerous he can be when he slammed a couple of sixes on his way to a quick 51 in the first ODI.Tamim Iqbal is becoming an increasingly influential batsman for Bangladesh. A naturally aggressive player, he has worked hard on tempering his attacking stroke play. Another aspect of his batting that has improved is the way he deal with spinners, using an effective sweep shot to blunt them. With Mohammad Ashraful and Shakib Al Hasan not in the greatest of touch, Tamim has added responsibility at the top of the order.Team newsThe only decision for New Zealand is whether they want to bring in Ian Butler for one of the three quick bowlers who played on Friday. If they do, Tim Southee could be the one who sits out.New Zealand: (probable) 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Peter Ingram, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 James Franklin, 6 Neil Broom, 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Tim Southee/Ian Butler, 10 Daryl Tuffey, 11 Andy McKay.
Bangladesh have named their playing XI. Mohammad Ashraful, despite a lean run, keeps his place but Raqibul Hasan has been dropped for Aftab Ahmed. Rubel Hossain has earned a starting spot ahead of Nazmul Hossain.Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Mohammad Ashraful, 4 Aftab Ahmed,5 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 8 Naeem Islam, 9 Shahadat Hossain, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Rubel Hossain.
Quotes”Oram has been a bit frustrated with results but [on Friday] we saw a guy who, if we can get him back to where he was 12-18 months ago, is going to be a big help to this side.”
Mark Greatbatch, New Zealand coach, emphasises what an important player Jacob Oram can be to the one-day outfit.
