Former England captain Michael Vaughan has admitted that his failure to switch off from the demands of the job took its toll as he reflected on his decision to step down. Vaughan led England in 51 Tests, including the victorious Ashes series against Australia in 2005, but resigned in August last year after the home series against South Africa, and was succeeded by Kevin Pietersen.”I wasn’t very good at switching off,” Vaughan wrote in the . “I thought about the captaincy 24/7 and that is why it took its toll. There is always going to be some negative stuff, like whether you are going to tour Zimbabwe or not, and how you cope determines how long you can captain for.”Even in my year out with a knee injury I was still thinking about how to make us a great team. Even when playing golf, after two or three holes I’d get back to strategies for beating Australia and what sort of cricket we had to play.”Vaughan admitted that he suffered self-doubt during the final period of his captaincy. “For three-quarters of my time I didn’t worry about my decision-making,” he said. “Towards the end, especially in my last series in charge against South Africa, I started to question myself – and in sport, the more you start to think, the more you have a problem. I didn’t want to go on as captain for a year too long.”He also conceded that many a time he had to put up a front. “A lot of captaincy is about acting: you want your team-mates to play naturally and be themselves, but the captain has to act. Your job is to lead with a calm authority. On that Sunday morning at Edgbaston in 2005, when we won the second Test against Australia by two runs, I was unbelievably stressed. Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash should be available for selection against Arsenal after sustaining a minor injury at the weekend, Ashley Preece says. 

The lowdown

Cash started against Wolves on Saturday and played 79 minutes before he was substituted, with Ashley Young coming on in his place.

Manager Dean Smith revealed after the game that he’d been forced off with a dead leg.

Cash is a mainstay of the Villa side, with his Wolves injury threatening to disrupt a 100% Premier League starting record.

Going by WhoScored metrics, the 24-year-old has been his side’s third best player so far this season.  Nobody in the squad has made more tackles per 90 minutes.

Cash, incidentally, ranks in Villa’s top-six earners with a reported weekly salary of £65,000.

Addressing supporters in a Birmingham Live fan Q&A, Preece wrote: “[I] expect Matty Cash to shake off a dead leg for Arsenal on Friday.”

Meanwhile, an update on the fitness of winger Leon Bailey is expected in Dean Smith’s press conference on Thursday.

The verdict

This will surely come as a relief to Villa supporters. Young would have been able to deputise, but it’s clear that Cash is one of Smith’s most trusted lieutenants.

And they need to muster a response on Friday night against a 12th-placed Arsenal side, having conceded three times in 15 minutes in a dramatic late collapse after Cash’s withdrawal on Saturday.

If Bailey is available for selection too, they’ll probably fancy their chances.

Na Vila Belmiro se fala em utilizar o dinheiro para quitar algumas dívidas e ajudar no fluxo de caixa. Os gastos do Peixe giram em torno de R$ 11 milhões mensais e alguns salários foram pagos com atraso ao longo da temporada. Além disso, a venda de jogadores era algo previsto no planejamento da diretoria, que aceitou negociar o volante Thiago Maia com o Lille, da França, porR$ 51 milhões, sendo queR$ 35,7 milhões foram para os cofres do clube.

O presidente Modesto Roma Júnior não descarta nem usar parte dos R$ 33 milhões para diminuir a dívida do Santos. De acordo com o balancete do Alvinegro, o total do passivo até 31 de março deste ano era avaliado em R$ 224 milhões. No fim de 2016, as dívidas chegaram a R$ 178 milhões, mas diminuiu em relação ao fim de 2014, que chegou a R$ 186 milhões.

It’s a sentiment shared by his captain Ricky Ponting, who believes England’s recent success will count for little when Australia arrive.Bopara was the standout for England in their home series against West Indies, when he scored 143 and 108, following the 104 he made during his only appearance in the Caribbean in February. He hasn’t played Australia in a Test, just as Johnson hasn’t faced England, but Australia’s new spearhead is confident his attack can get the better of Bopara.”I’ve seen Bopara in those two Tests against the West Indies where he scored those two centuries,” Johnson told Cricinfo. “He looked good, but there is a big difference between a series against the West Indies and the Ashes. There will be much more pressure out there, so it will be interesting to see how he goes.”There’s no doubt that facing Australia will be an enormous step up. O técnico Jair Ventura não demorou a se manifestar sobre a repercussão de sua declaração sobre a presença de técnicos estrangeiros no país. Em nota emitida à imprensa na manhã desta terça-feira, o comandante do Botafogo descartou críticas à presença de gringos, e afirmou que suas palavras em entrevista na Fox Sports contestaram a falta de reconhecimento a brasileiros:

“O que questiono e me deixa triste é ver que treinadores brasileiros são vistos com desconfiança e encontram dificuldades para trabalhar no exterior. Além de questões legais, como não reconhecimento de nossa habilitação profissional no mercado europeu. Nossa licença não é aceita na Europa, ao contrário da dos argentinos, por exemplo. Temos que refletir, discutir e buscar maneiras de mudar essa situação”.

Jair Ventura valorizou o trabalho de técnicos que vêm do exterior, e destacou o nome de Reinaldo Rueda, recentemente anunciado pelo Flamengo:

“Quero esclarecer que acho legítimo o direito de qualquer clube brasileiro contratar um treinador estrangeiro. Há muitos profissionais competentes em outros países, com condições de repetirem aqui o sucesso que tiveram em outros lugares, como é o caso de Reinaldo Rueda, que tem um currículo admirável”.

Em seguida, afirmou que sua vivência no futebol faz com que não tenha qualquer preconceito com estrangeiros em clubes do Brasil:

“E como posso criticar os estrangeiros, se convivo com vários no Botafogo? Eu mesmo morei mais de nove anos fora do país quando jogador e tive essa vivência. Reitero que defendo uma maior valorização dos treinadores brasileiros, de competir em igualdade de condições com os estrangeiros no mercado externo. Infelizmente, a nossa licença ainda não nos dá esse direito”.

The Saints have not had the best of times in the early weeks of 2020/21. As it stands, they are 16th place in the Premier League table, having won just one game out of nine. Tella is one of the most promising players at the club, but so far this season, he has made only three appearances in the league, having spent just 83 minutes on the pitch (Transfermarkt). In the League Cup, when he has been given more time, he has one goal and one assist in two matches, and many Saints supporters believe that he should be playing more.
