South Africa clinch series against Kiwis

Port Elizabeth (South Africa), Dec 4: South Africa clinched the series againstNew Zealand on Monday with a seven-wicket win on the fifth day of the secondTest at St George’s Park

05-Dec-2000Port Elizabeth (South Africa), Dec 4: South Africa clinched the series againstNew Zealand on Monday with a seven-wicket win on the fifth day of the secondTest at St George’s Park.Opening batsman Gary Kirsten shepherded South Africa to their second win of thethree-match series, making 47 not out after South Africa had been set a smalltarget of 86.As in the first Test, which South Africa won by five wickets, the New Zealandbowlers and fielders showed spirit in defending a small target. After dismissing Boeta Dippenaar on Sunday, they claimed the wickets of JacquesKallis (26) and Daryll Cullinan (11) before conceding defeat.Kallis struck five boundaries and was looking in good form until he top-edged ahook against Martin and was caught at deep backward square-leg.Cullinan drove at an inswinger from Walmsley and was bowled between bat and pad.The third Test starts in Johannesburg on Friday.South African fast bowler Allan Donald is a doubtful starter for the final Testbecause of a stomach muscle injury. Mfuneko Ngam, 21, from Eastern Province, ison standby and is likely to win a first cap.South African physiotherapist Craig Smith said Donald would not play if therewere any signs of the injury on the day before the game.New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming blamed “a disastrous session” on the fourthday for his side’s defeat.New Zealand, 63 behind on first innings, never recovered after losing fourwickets in six overs.”It turned horribly wrong after lunch on Sunday,” said Fleming. “It was adisastrous session that cost us the match. It was poor batsmanship and pooroption taking.”Any plans we had of extending the game were thrown out of the window. If we hadput another 150 on the board it would have been a bloody good game. We missedthe boat.”Fleming also pinned part of the blame for the series defeat on New Zealand’slengthy injury list which has claimed all-rounder Chris Cairns, left-arm spinnerDaniel Vettori and fast bowler Dion Nash.”With Cairns, Vettori and Nash you can have sessions like that and still winmatches,” Fleming said. But he said he was pleased with the progress made by young bowlers like ChrisMartin, Brooke Walker and Kerry Walmsley, who had come in for injured bowlers.South Africa captain Shaun Pollock said there had been two turning points forhis side.”Obviously, one of them was to to be seven down (in the first innings) and 90behind and to turn that round into a 60-run lead.”Then there was the way we bowled in the middle session yesterday. The pitchwasn’t doing too much and to pick up four quick wickets turned the game on itshead and set up the victory for us,” said Pollock. The South African captain, after his first Test series win since taking overfrom the sacked Hansie Cronje in April, paid tribute to a fighting performancein which South Africa had struggled in the first innings.”It’s great to have wrapped it up in the second Test. It was a big effort tobowl New Zealand out in the second innings,” he said.Pollock said the match had been evenly poised before a 136-run eighth wicketstand between Man-of-the-Match Neil McKenzie and Nicky Boje enabled South Africato take a 63-run first innings lead.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Emiliano Buendia latest

Aston Villa are battling it out with Arsenal for Norwich City star Emiliano Buendia and are now thought to be readying an official offer, according to The Telegraph.

And, as to be expected, plenty of Aston Villa fans have been sharing their delight at the news on social media.

The 24-year-old could cost up to £40m, which may see him become Villa’s club-record signing. The report suggests that Villa are looking at players who have already played in English football, with a creative midfielder – or a No 10 – a priority at Villa Park this summer.

Buendia helped Norwich return to the Premier League last season, scoring 15 times and registering 17 assists in 39 Championship appearances.

The Argentine played on the right-wing at Carrow Road during the 2020/21 season but does have experience of turning out on the left and in an attacking midfield role.

Youri Tielemans tipped for Liverpool move

Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans has been tipped to join Liverpool during the summer transfer window, with Kevin Phillips talking up the move.

The Lowdown: Superb performer for Leicester

The Belgian has been a standout performer for the Foxes in recent years, famously scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Chelsea earlier this month.

The 24-year-old has made 108 appearances for Leicester, scoring 17 goals and registering 19 assists along the way and proving to be a key player under Brendan Rodgers.

It could be that a fresh challenge appeals to Tielemans this summer, though, with Liverpool linked with snapping him up.

The Latest: Phillips talks up move

Speaking to Football Insider, former Sunderland and England striker Phillips claimed that Anfield would be an ideal move for the Belgium international. He said:

“I think everyone is available for the right price. I don’t think Brendan Rodgers would want Tielemans to go but I think when Liverpool come knocking at your door and speak to your agent, then the player is going to listen and is probably going to want to go.

“Especially now that Leicester won’t be getting Champions League football next year after just missing out while Liverpool have, that’s a big, big draw for any player.

“So if Liverpool were to make enquiries and make an offer then it could be one of those where it’s hard to stop the player going and turn the deal down, so it will be an interesting one.”

The Verdict: Ideal Wijnaldum replacement

Tielemans is a fantastic footballer and someone who could be a perfect replacement for the departing Gini Wijnaldum at Liverpool.

Not only did the Belgian chip in with six goals and four assists in the Premier League last season, he also averaged 2.3 tackles per game.

That highlights what an impressive all-round midfielder he has been, and Liverpool should certainly considering bringing him in this summer.

Roberts claims Spurs must buy smart

Tottenham Hotspur appear to need a rebuild with several players below the standard required which will leave chief scout, Steve Hitchen, with a lot on his plate this summer and UEFA Cup winner. Graham Roberts has told Football FanCast exclusively that he hopes Hitchen does his homework on any potential signings this summer.

Under Jose Mourinho, Spurs signed a number of players that failed to make the grade such as Steven Bergwijn, Matt Doherty and Gedson Fernandes, with the latter’s option to buy permanently not exercised last year.

It appears to be in the defence where Spurs are looking to strengthen with links to Jannik Vestergaard and Lewis Dunk in recent weeks suggesting they are looking for a commanding centre back who is a threat in both boxes.

Hitchen has had a mixed bag of results when it comes to signings since he was appointed in 2017, with the likes of Jack Clarke and Ryan Sessegnon appearing to be nowhere near the first team and Roberts has told FFC exclusively that Hitchen must do better when it comes to recruitment this summer:

He said: “Steve Hitchen really needs to do his homework on players this year, he really does need to do his homework.”

Big money signings such as Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele have failed to prove they are worth their price tags on a consistent basis with both only showing flashes of their ability.

Hitchen has, however, made some smart signings for Spurs, such as Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg from Southampton and Joe Rodon from Swansea for a combined total of £25 million.

Wolves: Dendoncker poor against Man Utd

Molineux was rocking for Nuno Santo’s very final game in charge of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday but the players on the pitch were unable to send their manager away in style.

It was a tough ask for this Old Gold side as they faced a Manchester United team who had competed so admirably for the Premier League title this year.

Having supporters back in the stadium certainly helped their cause and spurred them on, however.

Nelson Semedo was rampant down the right-hand side and even popped up with a rare goal but Wolves ultimately fell short as they were made to rue Mike Dean and the dreaded VAR.

The Midlands outfit weren’t clinical enough in attack but they let themselves down defensively as they have done for large parts of the campaign.

Donny van de Beek enjoyed some bright touches in the middle of the park and it was the Dutchman that was brought down for a penalty the ultimately won United the game.

Romain Saiss clumsily dangled a leg out with a rash piece of play that cost Wolves the match and let Nuno down on his final match at Molineux.

That said, he wasn’t their worst culprit during the 2-1 defeat.

That honour, unfortunately, had to go to Leander Dendoncker. Fresh from being picked for the Belgium squad at the upcoming European Championships, he hardly sent a positive message to Roberto Martinez.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-rumours-and-news-soumare-dias-dembele-marques-nuno-santo” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer rumours and news!”]

Picked in the middle of the park over the more attacking Vitinha and Morgan Gibbs-White, it was a decision that ultimately didn’t pay off.

Dendoncker completed 93% of his passes but in terms of his physical game, he was way off it.

The £75k-per-week earner was anonymous as he somehow failed to involve himself in a single defensive duel.

That meant the Belgian didn’t win a tackle or complete an interception. The midfielder’s stats sheet from the game was full of zeroes with him making no key passes and not registering a single dribble.

This wasn’t the first time he’s let his manager down this season, though. He was skinned by Adama Traore when Wolves played Leeds back in March.

It feels that when the Old Gold play against teams on the counter-attack, Dendoncker seems to struggle with the pace and energy.

Nuno’s spirits won’t be too dampened by this performance but he can’t have been too impressed.
