Whelan urges Everton to land Nakamba

Noel Whelan has offered his thoughts on Everton’s attempts to land Aston Villa beast Marvelous Nakamba.

What’s the talk?

Former Premier League forward Noel Whelan has suggested that Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba could add some “energy and life” to Everton’s squad this summer. He told Football Insider:

Everton bought a couple of midfield players last season, very good ones at that, who bring energy.

“Maybe Rafa Benitez has seen something in the side that he feels they need to be successful and progress. Look, you can never have enough energy in midfield. That’s the place on the field that you want to control and dominate.

“To have somebody with a bit more energy and tenacity about him… You’ve got Allan that they brought in last year in that defensive role.

“We know every time a new manager comes in he always wants to bring in his own players. That’s his stamp on the team. This could be one player he’s looked at before and feels could bring some energy and life to that midfield.”

This comes after it was revealed by The Telegraph earlier this month that Everton and Watford are both interested in signing the enforcer from Villa before the end of the transfer window.

Re-energise

Marcel Brands could re-energise Everton’s midfield options with a deal for Nakamba in the closing weeks of the window. The Toffees chief must work hard to ensure that he can land the powerhouse ahead of Watford to bolster Rafa Benitez’s squad and bring in extra depth and energy the Spaniard’s arsenal of workmen in the middle of the park.

Nakamba struggled for game time in the 2020/21 campaign, but comparing his form in 2019/20 to that of Tom Davies and Andre Gomes last season makes him appear to be a shrewd signing on paper. Per 90 in the Premier League, the Villa man made more ball recoveries, tackles and interceptions than the Toffees duo. He also made more clearances and blocks combined and won more duels than Davies and was level with Gomes on that front.

This suggests that he is able to get around the pitch more than the pair at Premier League level. He has proven that he can win the ball back with a higher degree of efficiency, backing up Whelan’s comments about him bringing more life and energy to the team.

Benitez could love having another busy body in the midfield to rat about and recover possession as it not only helps the defence but also gives Everton more chances to hit teams on the counter. Nakamba could make a crucial tackle and then set, for example, Andros Townsend away on the wing for him to then cross it into the box for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison to score.

As Whelan says, with Allan already on the team, Benitez could build a dynamic midfield partnership with the £30k-a-week earning Nakamba alongside him.

Celtic: Hoops set to make Josip Juranovic approach

Celtic are set to make an approach for Legia Warsaw defender Josip Juranovic after a loan move for Manchester City defender Yan Couto collapsed, as per Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre.

The Lowdown: Celtic look for further reinforcements

Following some good recent results, new Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou has left the impression thus far that no stone will remain unturned in his quest for domestic and European success.

One area which he may see as a priority is the right-back berth, with Anthony Ralston currently the only figure on the Parkhead books with first team experience in the position.

Could the Celts now be set to tick another recruitment box before the transfer window closes?

The Latest: Hoops look to Juranovic as Couto move collapses

Celtic are mooted to be readying an opening offer for Juranovic following the capitulation of their loan move for Brazilian youngster Couto, as per Sky Sports.

The Croatian full-back is said to be keen on the move, whilst is valued at a cool £2.5m by his current employers Legia Warsaw. [Sky Sports]

Juranovic will be a familiar face to many within Scottish football, as he played against Scotland for his native country in their 3-1 win over the Tartan Army at Euro 2020 [BBC].

The Verdict: Juranovic would represent a real coup for Celtic

Juranovic would seem to be a real coup for the Hoops should any move come to fruition, as he would add quality to Celtic in an attacking and defensive sense.

The 26-year-old excelled in Poland last season, registering nine goal contributions in 32 appearances with one goal and eight assists [Transfermarkt], a fine return for a defender. He is also renowned for his pinpoint crossing ability, something which Celtic could utilise when struggling to play through low-block defences.

Performing solidly in his two appearances at the European Championship over the summer, he managed to complete six ball recoveries and three clearances for Croatia during the finals [UEFA.com].

Given his wide range of attributes and their need for more experienced right-back depth, Celtic should definitely try to seize upon Juranovic’s apparent desire to join the Hoops and submit an offer to meet Legia Warsaw’s asking price.

Chapple leaves Sussex struggling

Glen Chapple, Lancashire chipped away at the Sussex second innings and are poised for a crucial victory in a tight first division

There is a slow pace to life down by the sea at Hove, and the same can be said about the pitch for this Championship game which has become more docile by the session. However, led by a big-hearted display from Glen Chapple, Lancashire chipped away at the Sussex second innings and are poised for a crucial victory in a tight first division. Murray Goodwin remains Sussex’s best chance of setting a challenging chase, after battling hard for 77, but a dodgy forecast could yet have the final say.Andrew Flintoff, though, injected a fiercer mood to proceedings with three hostile spells. His first involved a engaging battle with Chris Adams, who came perilously close to providing Flintoff with his first wicket of the match. A thick edge flew very low towards Paul Horton at first slip, but Adams was unsure whether it had carried. It was a rare occasion of TV being available for a Championship match and, as is often the case, the replays added more doubt. In the end it was given not out, much to the frustration of Lancashire.Flintoff ran in even harder, striking Adams on the bicep, before taking a breather after lunch. He returned in mid-afternoon and should have removed Matt Prior on 16, but the edge flew at waist height between the keeper and first slip. Then, in the final session, he tested out the middle of the pitch, pinging Goodwin and Ollie Rayner on the helmet but still his first wicket of the game proved elusive.Instead, the main wicket-taker was Chapple – who has missed a large part of the season with injury – as he extracted some testing reverse swing. His first wicket was more conventional as Michael Yardy flayed outside off stump, a waste of two hours’ watchful batting. Adams, already with his left-off against Flintoff, then dragged into his stumps for the second in the match to continue a poor Championship season. At 89 for 3, Sussex were still a distance behind but were pushed into the lead by a stand of 61 between Prior and Goodwin. Once again Prior looked classy, but he too benefited from the judgement of Richard Illingworth, the third umpire, when he came within millimetres of being run out by Steven Croft. The pictures were replayed at least a dozen times in about three minutes, and in the end the benefit of doubt had to go to the batsman. However, just as Prior was threatening Faf du Plessis trapped him lbw, his second important breakthrough of the match.Carl Hopkinson didn’t last long as Chapple began to get the ball to hoop around, but his fourth wicket was down to a superb catch by Croft at backward point. Robin Martin-Jenkins drove hard and Croft flung himself horizontally to hold his second sharp grab of the innings, having earlier snaffled a low one off Sajid Mahmood to remove Chris Nash.Lancashire scented the chance to make further inroads during the final hour, but a long stint in the field on one of the warmest days of the year began to take its toll. Flintoff, though, was still bowling as quickly at the close as he was when he began around midday, while in another innings Gary Keedy would have enjoyed some reward for 31 tight overs.Stuart Law’s outstanding innings is shaping as a match-winner and he was left unbeaten on 158 as Lancashire’s last two wickets could only add a further 10 runs. It meant they missed out on a full hand of batting points by eight runs, but that will be of minimal concern if they can wrap up victory on the final day.

India now are a top one-day team

It was such a crying shame that the rain robbed India of a greatchance to win the ICC Champions Trophy

EAS Prasanna03-Oct-2002It was such a crying shame that the rain robbed India of a greatchance to win the ICC Champions Trophy. With the rub of the green ontheir side, I am certain that the Indians, who had put on a string ofcommanding performances with the bat and ball during the course of thetournament, had a good chance of emerging victorious if either thefinal or the replay had gone the full distance.
© ReutersThat said we must remember that we did not get to see the Sri Lankanspinners in action against the Indian batsmen. Muralitharan and hismates would have certainly relished bowling on a pitch that wasgetting increasingly slower and lower and posed quite a few challengesfor the Indian willow-wielders.I felt the pitches that had been laid out for the semi-final againstAustralia and for the final were nowhere near ideal for one-daycricket. Spinners do not need such dust bowls to be champions. With acapacity crowd watching the game, a true wicket was what was requiredas this would have helped both the batsmen and the bowlers and madethe game an engaging spectacle.I thought the Indian bowlers bowled well in restricting Sri Lankanbatsmen to a score below 250 in both the matches. Zaheer Khan, who wasthe standout bowler as far as India were concerned, bowled a couple ofgreat opening spells and his dramatic first-ball dismissal ofJayasuriya on Monday was one of the moments of the final. The left-armquick has turned out to be a revelation and the way he performed wasindeed most heartening.Javagal Srinath being rushed in from England to partner Zaheer in thefinal was meanwhile an unnecessary step. It was never going to be easy for him to fly into a hot and humid Colombo and get acclimatised for the final in the space of a few hours. I thought that the Indians would have been much better off playing Anil Kumble instead. True, the team management admitted their error and brought in the experienced leggie for the second game but then again how many times does a team get a second chance?Though Srinath has stated that he wants to play one-dayers until theend of the World Cup next year, I think the the experienced bowler nowhas to prove that he can compete with the young fast bowlers in thecountry. It certainly will be a difficult situation for the selectorswhen Nehra becomes fit to play again. As for the spinners, both Kumble and Harbhajan bowled well in thefinals. It was heartening to see Harbhajan giving the ball a lot moreair and trying to turn the ball. This is something he has to doconsistently on any type of pitch. Harbhajan is undeniably our mainstrike bowler, and I am sure by the time the West Indian team leaves India, he would have picked a bagful of wickets.Another man who bowled impressively was Virender Sehwag. Hisdisciplined bowling and explosive batting made him the player of thetournament.I must say that it was certainly a remarkable performance by theIndian team, who it must be remembered confirmed participation onlyafter a last-minute resolution of the contracts row. It wasencouraging to see the likes of Sehwag, Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singhdelivering under pressure. This shall now help the experienced playerslike Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid to play with much morefreedom.
© CricInfoProbably, the only area of concern now is the wicket-keeper’s slot.Rahul is doing an okay job, but he has been making a few mistakes that might turn out to be crucial and effectively ruin India’s chances in the World Cup. In my opinion, India with its strong batting line-up does not really need seven batsmen to do a job that six wouldn’t do. The best solution might be to try out a specialist wicket-keeper by dropping both Dinesh Mongia and VVS Laxman.Ganguly and coach John Wright should also focus on the fielding. Eventhe spectacular efforts of youngsters like Yuvraj and Kaif cannotgloss over the fact that we remain a poor fielding side. The teamcertainly cannot afford to drop sitters like those dropped by SachinTendulkar on Sunday. This might have a lot to with a sense of overconfidence creeping in after a string of great performances. To nip this bad habit in the bud, the current team only needs to go back to the Indian teams that had won the World Cup in 1983 and the Benson & Hedges WorldChampionship in 1985. Both of them had to pay a heavy price for turning over-confident as the drubbing at the hands of the West Indies at home in ’83 and theunsuccessful World Cup ’87 campaign testify. All said, let me congratulate them once again for their success in England and now in Sri Lanka. They now are the favourites to demolish a West Indian team sans Lara. And as far as one-day cricket goes, they are not anymore the under-dogs but front-runners for winning the World Cup in 2003.

Leeds monitor Omar Colley

Leeds United are among the Premier League clubs eyeing Omar Colley, according to Samp News 24.

The lowdown

Sampdoria centre-back Colley made 29 Serie A appearances last season, averaging 4.4 accurate long balls, 2.6 successful aerial duels and 2.3 interceptions per match (via WhoScored).

No player in Serie A made more clearances than the Gambia international, who also ranked in the top five for interceptions.

Chris Wilder, the manager of Leeds’ Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, requested the signing of Colley in the January transfer window as he looked to save the struggling Blades (via The Athletic).

Leeds have made two senior signings this summer, striking an £11.52million permanent deal for Jack Harrison before recruiting Junior Firpo from FC Barcelona for £13.5million (via Transfermarkt).

The latest

The report says that the sale of Colley, who returned for pre-season training on Wednesday, is seen by Sampdoria as a way to ‘guarantee some incoming investments’.

But they’ve made clear that they won’t budge on their price-tag of €10million (£8.6million).

Leeds are not the only Premier League club in the frame, with West Ham United and Newcastle United also keen.

The verdict

Perhaps centre-back shouldn’t be a priority for Leeds this summer, with Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk already on their books. Still, it’s good to have that extra insurance, particularly given Llorente’s concerning fitness record.

Colley would be a reasonably cheap acquisition and a solid medium-term option for Marcelo Bielsa.

He could be something of a weapon given his capacity to launch attacks from deep. No Leeds centre-back played more accurate long passes per game than Colley last season.

In other news, a Leeds journalist has made this admission on links to Adama Traore.
