de Villiers and South Africa crush Scotland

South Africa produced an ominously clinical performance to send Scotland packing in the World Twenty20

South Africa produced an ominously clinical performance to send Scotland packing in the ICC World Twenty20, beating them by the second highest margin in this format of 130 runs. AB de Villiers cracked a classy and authoritative 79 from just 34 in South Africa’s 211 for 5, the highest total of the tournament so far, before Dale Steyn and Johan Botha tore through Scotland who were rolled for 81, the seventh-lowest Twenty20 total. This was a champion performance from one of the tournament favourites. Unlike England, who were out-thought and out-played by Netherlands in the opening match, South Africa asserted themselves from the outset to lay bare Scotland’s technical flaws, not to mention their lack of experience.Chasing a daunting 212, Scotland were reduced to a hopeless 50 for 6 at the halfway point. Steyn knocked over Ryan Watson and Colin Smith (his second first-ball duck in as many days) while Wayne Parnell removed Gavin Hamilton, who decided to open the innings. Steyn rarely reached his top pace, but he needn’t have: he was quick and menacing enough to sound a warning to the other teams in the tournament. Kyle Coetzer briefly stood in South Africa’s way, the only Scotland batsman to take them on, smiting Albie Morkel over long-on for two sizeable sixes to give a hearty and patriotic crowd something to cheer, but these were the last desperate runs of an innings already terminated.Coetzer’s 31-ball 42 crowned an impressive personal display from him, following his outstanding catch in South Africa’s innings to dismiss Mark Boucher. Before that, however, Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis ensured South Africa got off to a flying start. Kallis was first to open his shoulders, thumping the wayward Callum MacLeod through extra cover before flicking him fine for four more. He took to Jan Stander – who had a howler of a tournament – with greed, flaying him over backward point; flicking a stray to fine-leg before square cutting twice more past point. South Africa, unlike England who stuttered so aimlessly two days ago, were not going to let an Associate side get the better of them.Scotland were urged to improve their fielding by the captain, Hamilton, yesterday, but he himself was twice at fault with a couple of mucky indiscretions, and overall, his side’s fielding occasionally verged on the comical. Scotland are nothing if not fighters, however, and they fought back impressively with three wickets. Majid Haq, a canny and underrated offspinner, induced a thick inside edge to a slog-sweep from Kallis to end his innings on 48. Smith, too, attempted a similar shot three balls later but top-edged it to the wicketkeeper. Ryan Watson was then brought on and a lovely piece of flight accounted for Herschelle Gibbs, who was just beginning to look ominous. And then de Villiers took over with relish. Initially favouring an orthodox approach with a selection of elegant, classy drives, he then scorched Haq for a flat fix over long-on before opening himself up to Glenn Rogers’ slow-left-arm spin, cover-driving him with wonderful flare and elegance. With five overs to go, the manic final flurry was instigated and Watson was treated with pure disdain, carted over midwicket for a crowd-pleasing six.His and Morkel’s fifty partnership came from 18 balls and, though Morkel fell for 24, de Villiers powered onwards to bring up a 25-ball fifty with his fifth boundary down the ground as an increasingly overawed MacLeod was clattered to all parts. This mercilessness is how to deal with Associates, England. The moment of the day, however, belonged to Scotland. Boucher, on two, nailed Gordon Drummond over the top but Coezter was lurking at long-on, practically treading on the boundary, and with a trampoline leap he leapt high and stretched his right hand, swivelling in the process, to cling onto an extraordinarily athletic chance which rightfully received a standing ovation. It was Scotland’s only high point.South Africa wrapped things up in the 16th over with each facet of their game looking polished and their attitude ruthless, but far sterner tests lie ahead in the coming days.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Tyrone Mings claim

Aston Villa captain Tyrone Mings was thought to be furious after he was dropped against West Ham on the weekend.

That’s according to trusted reporter Gregg Evans, with a number of Villa fans giving their thoughts to the news on social media.

Mings, valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, was left out of Dean Smith’s starting line up in the defeat to the Hammers and cut a dejected figure in the warm-up and in the stands.

The defensive colossus did feature at Villa Park, though, making his 100th appearance for the club in the process following Ezri Konsa’s red card in the second half.

According to Evans, in a story for The Athletic, Mings was told he wouldn’t be playing just 24 hours in advance as Smith reverted to a back four once again, selecting Konsa and Kortney Hause.

@villareport shared Evans’ claim regarding Mings on Twitter on Wednesday. This is what these fans had to say in reply…

Chance for Delhi to reclaim top spot

A mismatch is on the cards with the tournament’s most impressive side, Delhi Daredevils, taking on the weakest, Kolkata Knight Riders, at the Wanderers

The tournament’s most impressive side takes on the weakest at the Wanderers tomorrow. Delhi Daredevils are heavily favoured to go all the way while Kolkata Knight Riders have been rooted to the bottom of the table almost since the start. Following their defeat to Chennai, Delhi notched up two consecutive victories and, given their trouncing of Kolkata in their previous encounter last week, look good for a third. That will ensure they reclaim their position at the top from Chennai. They are currently on 12 points from eight games with two games in hand over their challengers. With seven defeats, Kolkata are virtually out of the tournament, barring the rather unlikely event of a five-match winning streak from here on. Effectively, Kolkata will be playing for pride.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first) Delhi – WWLWL
The top order looked uncharacteristically scratchy against Mumbai Indians but it didn’t matter in the end as they were chasing a modest 117. Their stand-in captain, Gautam Gambhir, is yet to find the fluency of his stupendous form last year. Delhi’s bowling set up their most recent victory and the most striking feature was the fact that they conceded just two boundaries in the first ten overs of Mumbai’s innings.Kolkata – LLLLL
The only positive Kolkata took out of their previous game was the performance of their top order. Morne van Wyk led their efforts with 74 while Brendon McCullum made a refreshing 35. But their bowlers failed to put any pressure on Delhi and the fielding was shoddy.Watch out forBrendon McCullum: The Kolkata captain has had a lot on his plate, aside from his own ordinary form, with 85 from eight games. He made a sound start against Delhi, smashing three sixes. Though he failed to carry on after making a start, one could sense he was turning the corner. Perhaps the hopeless scenario with his team will allow him to bat with less pressure and the IPL will only be richer if he strikes gold.TeamsVirender Sehwag’s availability is still in doubt and if he sits out again, David Warner will retain his place. Glenn McGrath must have set the bench on fire already but it seems his best chance of getting a game depends if they want to give Dirk Nannes a rest.Delhi Daredevils (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag/ David Warner, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 AB de Villiers, 4 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6 Mithun Manhas, 7 Rajat Bhatia, 8 Amit Mishra, 9 Ashish Nehra, 10 Pradeep Sangwan, 11 Dirk Nannes/Glenn McGrathThe calls for Mashrafe Mortaza’s inclusion have only got stronger, at least going by feedback received by Cricinfo. But with three overseas players virtually picking themselves, Mortaza’s only realistic chance of getting a game is as a replacement for Moises Henriques, though the allrounder didn’t do too badly with the bat in his last game, scoring 30 off 24 balls. David Hussey has been cleared by Cricket Australia to play but if he comes in, Brad Hodge may have to make way.Kolkata Knight Riders (probable) 1 Morne van Vyk (wk), 2 Brendon McCullum (capt), 3 Brad Hodge/David Hussey, 4 Sourav Ganguly, 5 Wriddhiman Saha, 6 Moises Henriques/Mashrafe Mortaza, 7 Laxmi Ratan Shukla, 8 Ajit Agarkar, 9 Murali Kartik, 10 Ashok Dinda, 11 Ishant SharmaStats and triviaMorne van Vyk has the highest average (83.50) in the tournament for a batsman who has played four innings or more.McCullum has hit three fours and five sixes in eight games. In one game alone, he managed 10 fours and 13 sixes and that was during his whirlwind 158 in Bangalore. That’s a lot of catching up to do.Head-to-headThe current head to head stands at 1-1. Shoaib Akhtar stole the attention at the Eden Gardens but the return match in Delhi was washed out. Delhi evened the score with a nine-wicket win in Durban.

Johnson piles pressure on Bopara

As expected for a man whose girlfriend is a karate black-belt, Mitchell Johnson doesn’t intimidate easily. So the sight of England’s No. 3 Ravi Bopara rattling off three consecutive centuries against West Indies hasn’t worried him in the slightest

As expected for a man whose girlfriend is a karate black-belt, Mitchell Johnson doesn’t intimidate easily. So the sight of England’s No. 3 Ravi Bopara rattling off three consecutive centuries against West Indies hasn’t worried him in the slightest. It’s a sentiment shared by his captain Ricky Ponting, who believes England’s recent success will count for little when Australia arrive.Bopara was the standout for England in their home series against West Indies, when he scored 143 and 108, following the 104 he made during his only appearance in the Caribbean in February. He hasn’t played Australia in a Test, just as Johnson hasn’t faced England, but Australia’s new spearhead is confident his attack can get the better of Bopara.”I’ve seen Bopara in those two Tests against the West Indies where he scored those two centuries,” Johnson told Cricinfo. “He looked good, but there is a big difference between a series against the West Indies and the Ashes. There will be much more pressure out there, so it will be interesting to see how he goes.”There’s no doubt that facing Australia will be an enormous step up. For one thing, the West Indies captain Chris Gayle led by inglorious example in England, where he arrived late from the IPL and declared that he wouldn’t mind if Test cricket died out. By comparison, Ponting has plainly stated that he is desperate to win the Ashes on English soil.”They’ve obviously done everything very well in the last two Test matches against the West Indies,” Ponting said of England. “I guarantee they’ll be facing a stiffer opposition than West Indies when we arrive. It’s been made pretty clear over the past couple of weeks that their captain [Gayle] doesn’t really want to be there.”England will be a very stiff and tough opposition, we know that. They always are when we play against them. The last series out here in Australia was a 5-0 result to us but it could’ve been a whole lot different had we not done some exceptional things.”One of the men who troubled England during that series was Stuart Clark, who with 26 victims was Australia’s leading wicket-taker in a team that featured Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath. Clark believes England have improved since then and, in any case, will be tougher to beat at their home venues.Since the tour of Australia Matthew Hoggard and Sajid Mahmood have fallen by the wayside, Ashley Giles has retired, and Andrew Flintoff has battled ongoing injuries. Steve Harmison didn’t play in the home series against West Indies, although Clark expects him to win a recall for the Ashes. He said the England attack would be tough to dominate.”The bowling line-up is different but probably better [than 2006-07],” Clark said. “Steve Harmison is obviously a great bowler and Flintoff may come back into the team. But Graham Onions and Stuart Broad and James Anderson are doing a great job. I think from what we saw out here a couple of years ago they’ve probably improved and are at a higher level than what they were.”They’ve played some good cricket. I’m not sure they’re playing against the greatest competition in the world. They’ve still gone out and done a job. They beat the West Indies in three days, which is not an easy thing to do, even if the opposition isn’t great.”The Australians, on the other hand, are coming off a 2-1 victory in South Africa against the No. 2 side in the world. It all adds up to a group confident of overcoming anything England can throw at them.”You don’t face many tougher tasks than playing South Africa over there,” Ponting said. “That really excites me about what we’ve got coming up on this Ashes tour.”

Johnson leaves South Africa bloodied and broken

Mitchell Johnson produced the most intimidating performance of his international career to drive South Africa towards the brink of oblivion

Mitchell Johnson produced the most intimidating performance of his international career to drive South Africa towards the brink of oblivion. Australia’s pace spearhead claimed two wickets in the first over of South Africa’s innings, then hospitalised Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis in 16 ruthless overs that placed both match and series firmly within Australia’s grasp. The South African top order had no answer to Johnson’s express pace, brutish bounce and deft swing, and finished the day at a perilous 138 for 7 in reply to Australia’s first innings total of 352. As dispiriting as the constant fall of wickets was for the hosts, by far the most depressing development of day two was the hand injury to Smith from the first ball faced to Johnson. Scans revealed the South African captain had sustained an undisplaced fracture to the base of his little finger; an injury that will almost certainly sideline him for the remainder of the series. It was only two months – and two Tests – ago that Johnson fractured Smith’s left hand with a snarling delivery that jagged back sharply off a gaping crack in the SCG pitch. But the left-armer required no special assistance from the wicket in breaking Smith’s right hand, beating the batsman with a sharp, rising delivery that thundered into his glove and prompted immediate concern from the South African dressing room. Clearly, he is a bowler at the height of his powers, and quite possibly the best exponent of his craft on the international circuit.Johnson was ably supported by his fellow seamers, most notably Andrew McDonald, who removed Paul Harris, Kallis and Morne Morkel in the space of six deliveries in the final session. The all-rounder was no doubted aided by Johnson’s lead-up work – Kallis received three stitches to his chin, and lasted just two deliveries after resuming his innings – but still proved effective in maintaining a tight stump-to-stump line to South Africa’s embattled tail enders. The hosts might have been bundled out well before stumps if not for JP Duminy’s stoic solo hand. Duminy has established a reputation as an exciting strokemaker in his short international career, but it was resolute defence and raw courage that delivered him to an unbeaten 73 and steered South Africa to within 14 runs of the follow-on target.Still, this was a day that belonged to Johnson. In removing Neil McKenzie and Hashim Amla in the first over of the innings – a sequence, incidentally, that appeared as W0W on the scorecard – and Mark Boucher in the over before tea, the Queensland paceman set Australian on course for a victory that, just a fortnight ago, seemed improbable in the extreme. But perhaps more significant than his three dismissals were the savage blows he inflicted upon Smith and Kallis; the nerve centre of this South African batting order. With Smith gone and Kallis rattled, South Africa require nothing short of a second innings miracle to keep the series alive.Johnson worked tirelessly with his bowling coach, Troy Cooley, during the Australian summer to restore arm height and rediscover the bounce and conventional swing he lacked for the majority of 2008. The results have been plain for all to see on this tour of South Africa, and particularly so on the second day at Kingsmead. Johnson coaxed McKenzie into an edge to Brad Haddin with a shorter, angling delivery, then followed two balls later to remove Amla to a ball that swung sharply into the right-hander’s pads. The South Africans were teetering at 0 for 2 just five deliveries into their innings. The collapse had commenced.Johnson forged a superb new-ball combination with Hilfenhaus; the left- and right-arm swing befuddling the host batsmen. But it was surface movement, not atmospheric, that brought about the next breakthrough as Hilfenhaus, displaying brilliant powers of variation, cut back into the pads of AB de Villiers with a delivery that struck in line with leg-stump.To that point, the flow of day two had largely been determined by the heavy overhead conditions. Whereas the Australians scored freely under blue skies on Friday, batsmen from both sides battled mightily in the swinging conditions of Saturday. It stood to reason, then, that when the clouds cleared in Durban in the hour before tea, Kallis and Duminy settled into something of a rhythm. But the resistance would be short-lived. Johnson returned with a second spell every bit as venomous as the first, striking Kallis under the grille with a nasty bouncer, and bowling Mark Boucher with a yorker on the stroke of tea. He went to the break with the figures of 3 for 15, completely overshadowing the earlier deeds of his South African rival, Dale Steyn.Steyn tenderised, then filleted, the touring batsmen in what was certainly his most ferocious spell in the home-and-away series against Australia. Though wicketless in his first spell, Steyn was nonetheless responsible for unsettling the Australian middle order – at one stage striking Michael Hussey flush on the helmet, and following with several choice words – to pave the way for his fellow seamers to strike. He was rewarded after the lunch break with the final two wickets of the Australian innings. A virtuoso performance.Australia resumed play at 303 for 4 but, due largely to Steyn’s efforts, could only advance their score to 352 all out. The Australians seemed set for an imposing total after surviving the first hour unscathed, but undermined their efforts on day one by losing four wickets after the drinks break – including three in the space of six deliveries – to an array of loose strokes. It mattered little. Johnson’s heroics with the ball papered over the cracks of Australia’s flawed batting performance, and provided the tourists with a generous 214 run cushion at stumps on day two. With South Africa effectively eight down, it seems that only an act of God or Steyn can deny Australia in Durban.
