Following Zaheer Khan’s withdrawal, the Indian squad in Sri Lanka has been hit by another injury crisis with fast bowler Sreesanth returning home due to a knee injury. He suffered a medial collateral ligament tear in his left knee and has been declared unfit to take part in the Tests. Munaf Patel, who last made an international appearance in November 2009, has been named his replacement.Sreesanth’s availability was in doubt yesterday when he missed the team’s first net session on tour. His team-mate Harbhajan Singh too missed practice as he was down with fever. Though India flew down two rookie bowlers in Umesh Yadav and Jaidev Unadkat to practice with the team, the team management has anyway decided to to call in Munaf for Sreesanth.Munaf and Abhimanyu Mithun, who replaced Zaheer, are likely to compete for a place in the XI as Ishant Sharma’s seam bowling partner for the first Test starting July 18. Earlier, Zaheer pulled out of the tour due to a shoulder injury. The loss of the seam duo will stretch India’s fast bowling reserves even further because that’s the one department in which they have been found wanting in recent months.Sreesanth checked into the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore on Tuesday for an assessment of the injury to his knee. He was examined by the physio Ashish Kaushik and is likely to undergo his rehabilitation process at the academy for a few more days. “I just bowled seven balls there in Sri Lanka! What to do. That’s how it goes, I guess,” Sreesanth said.

Dhoni and Sangakkara hope for result-oriented series

With both sides weak in their respective fast bowling departments, both Dhoni and Sangakkara have pledged to make the Test series more interesting and enterprising by aiming for results

MS Dhoni: “Most of the teams playing today want a result in a five-day game. That intent is more than enough to make the game interesting”•AFP

With both sides weak in their respective fast bowling departments, Indian captain MS Dhoni and Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara have pledged to make the Test series more interesting and enterprising by aiming for results. The three-Test series beginning in Galle on July 18 is expected to be a very high-scoring one due to the imbalance between the batting and bowling strengths for both sides.India, currently the No.1 team in Tests, have been hit by injuries to opening bowlers Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth, both of whom have been ruled out of the series. Even their key spinner Harbhajan Singh is also struggling for fitness, battling with a bacterial viral infection which ruled him out of the ongoing three-day practice match against a Sri Lanka Board President’s XI.”Most of the teams playing today want a result in a five-day game. That intent is more than enough to make the game interesting. We are hoping we can get results in all the games,” said Dhoni. “It’s not about targeting just one bowler, we have to think about the whole bowling department of the opposition.”They’ve got experienced campaigners who are playing Test cricket for the past ten years or so. Our preparation level is quite good. When you are playing in the subcontinent and playing a side that has got a batting order that is really experienced and knows the conditions really well it always better to have fast bowlers who have played Test cricket under the circumstances and who have got plenty of experience under them and who know how to bowl in those conditions.”That experience always comes when you play more and more games. It’s a bit of concern that we are missing fast bowlers quite regularly in important series. The good thing is we have somehow been able to do well in all the series we have played. Hopefully we’ll have a bench strength of a minimum of five to six bowlers who are always available and who are at the top of their form.”Although Sri Lanka are not affected by injuries, their fast bowling line-up for the Galle Test doesn’t have much experience with Dilhara Fernando and Lasith Malinga, who is making a comeback to Test cricket after two-and-a-half years, being the most experienced pair with 33 and 28 Test appearances respectively. Another seamer who has performed well in recent home Tests, Nuwan Kulasekara, has been dropped. From the Indian side, Ishant Sharma, with 23 Test caps is the most experienced.”As a team we are going to play as hard as we can on the field to make sure that we come out on top. India will be doing the same so if that is not going to make it an interesting tug of war I don’t what is,” said Sangakkara. “We are looking forward to an interesting Test match and a result at the end of five days or even before.”The Galle Test marks the end of world’s leading Test and one-day wicket-taker Muttiah Muralitharan’s illustrious career who will be retiring after the match.

Emerging England hope for 2-0 lead

England head to Cardiff for the second ODI with a 1-0 lead over Australia

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale23-Jun-2010Match factsThe Australians must find a way to keep Eoin Morgan quiet•Getty Images

June 24, 2010, Sophia Gardens
Start time 2.30pm (13.30GMT)Big pictureA strange thing has happened over the past few months: England have become quite good at limited-overs cricket. They took home the World Twenty20, opened the one-day series with a solid victory at the Rose Bowl and have now won their past six ODIs. It’s an unfamiliar feeling for Ricky Ponting, who over the past decade has lost a couple of Ashes series but has always been involved in a one-day team that had the old rivals covered. They’ve met in 35 ODIs in the past ten years, for 25 Australian wins. But despite the result in Southampton, where England chased Australia’s total with four overs to spare, it was for much of the day a tightly contested battle. Eoin Morgan’s unbeaten century was the difference and Australia know that with a few more runs from their senior batsmen, they have a good chance to draw level. Equally, England realise that it’s risky to rely on one man, so they too require more from the likes of Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Strauss.Australia’s attack remains a weakness and it’s strange to think that while they walk out onto Sophia Gardens, one of their most deadly weapons will be watching on. Shaun Tait is in town as part of Glamorgan’s Twenty20 squad and England’s batsmen are no doubt glad not to be facing his toe-crushing 100mph yorkers and nasty short balls. Australia view Tait as a Twenty20 specialist these days, but he would add an x-factor to the bowling group. One thing is certain: defeat in Cardiff will make it extremely difficult for Australia to fight back and win the series. Ponting said after Tuesday that losses often brought out the best in the Australians. Let’s see if he’s right.Form guide (last five completed matches)England WWWWW
Australia LWLWWWatch out for…As opening batsman and fifth bowler, Shane Watson is arguably the most important man in Australia’s team. He was the only one of the specialists who scored at better than a run a ball in Southampton, although his aggression also brought his downfall. If he makes another quick start, but this time capitalises, it will help to reduce the pressure on Australia’s undermanned attack.Eoin Morgan’s wonderful match-winning century at the Rose Bowl confirmed him as the danger man in England’s middle order. Ricky Ponting was unhappy with the was his bowlers fed Morgan half-volleys, but it didn’t much matter where they put the ball against a man in that sort of form.Team newsAustralia sprung a surprise by handing Josh Hazlewood a debut in Southampton, where they expected some bounce in the pitch that could be exploited by the tall teenager. His nervy first ball was a full toss that Kevin Pietersen drove to the boundary, but Hazlewood fought back to take 1 for 41 and the captain Ricky Ponting said “he handled himself pretty well”. Clint McKay was unlucky to miss out and might again be sidelined if Hazlewood is retained. There must be a temptation to bring in Steven Smith, who would add power to the lower order. However, their batting is their strength, so they should rely on their solid top six to post a decent score.Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 James Hopes, 8 Nathan Hauritz, 9 Ryan Harris, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Doug Bollinger.England will be reluctant to change a winning side. Michael Yardy’s inclusion in might have surprised some fans but he proved a very useful bowler and should keep his place.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Michael Yardy, 7 Luke Wright, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson.Pitch and conditionsRather perversely, Sophia Gardens is more like an Australian home ground than an English one, quite apart from the fact that it’s Welsh. Australia have played three one-day internationals in Cardiff, although they have only won one. England, on the other hand, have never finished an ODI at the venue, with both their matches having been washed out. The forecast for Thursday says there is the chance of an isolated heavy shower, so Duckworth-Lewis calculations might again be on standby.Stats and Trivia England’s triumph in Southampton was their sixth consecutive ODI victory. If they win in Cardiff, it will be their best winning streak in ODIs since 1997-98 Thanks to England’s wash-outs in 2006 and 2008, there hasn’t been an ODI result in Cardiff since Australia’s infamous loss to Bangladesh in 2005 Ricky Ponting needs 51 runs to reach the milestone of 13,000 in one-day internationals – only Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya have achieved that mark At 19 years and 165 days, Josh Hazlewood was Australia’s youngest ever ODI debutant. The previous record holder was Ray Bright, who was 19 years and 260 days old when he walked out in Dunedin in 1974Quotes”We’re not getting carried away but it’s good to get the series off to a good start.”
“A loss generally brings the best out of us.”
Ricky Ponting looks on the bright side

Gayle and bouncers leave India facing exit

Chris Gayle finished agonisingly short of becoming the first man to make two international Twenty20 centuries, but by the time he was run-out, he had already swiped West Indies to a total that proved too tall for India’s batsmen who yet again floundered against the short ball. The defeat leaves India facing an early exit for the third straight global tournament, and the same questions about batting technique which were raised followed the elimination from last year’s World Twenty20 will be asked again. After Gayle’s slaphappy innings, in which almost all his runs came on the leg side, India’s top-order weren’t given anything to drive by West Indies’ new-ball bowlers. They faced the barrage of bouncers promised before the match, and even the short deliveries of the gentle medium-pacers Darren Sammy and Dwayne Bravo discomfited them initially. The home side’s fielding was also a dramatic improvement to the error-strewn show against Sri Lanka, with Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard being exceptional. India’s batting slide started with an athletic forward-diving catch by Pollard at square leg to dismiss opener M Vijay, who again failed to replicate his IPL form on the more demanding tracks in the Caribbean. Gautam Gambhir was also having a tough time, and just after edging a bouncer from Kemar Roach in the fifth over between slip and the keeper, he failed to evade a scorching short ball to glove to Denesh Ramdin. Two overs later, Rohit Sharma, the only batsman to enhance his reputation in the pasting by Australia, was controversially dismissed after the ball lobbed off his arm to the keeper. He stood his ground and asked Billy Bowden to call for the third umpire. After consultation with Simon Taufel, Bowden upheld his original decision, and India were down to 38 for 3, and the asking-rate was in double digits. There were fitful efforts to resuscitate the chase: first by Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh, who showed glimpses of their top-class hitting in a 42- run stand, but both holed out in the space of five deliveries. MS Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan, two of the quickest scorers, swung a few sixes, and with 32 needed off the final two overs, it wasn’t only the most one-eyed of fans who were hoping for a win. However, Bravo’s slide-rule throw from long-on ended Dhoni’s stay and with it, the big crowd in Barbados knew an important win was sealed.Unlike West Indies’ effort, the Indian fielding, usually a barometer of their performance, was shoddy, spilling two chances, one of which proved extremely expensive – Dhoni and Pathan colliding into each other as they went for a skier near square leg when Gayle was on 47, after which he blasted 51 off 26 deliveries.Gayle was just opening out when that catch went down; he had warmed up with a whip over long-on for six in the eighth over and followed it up in the next with the biggest six of the tournament, off Pathan, which bounced on the roof. He then extended Ravindra Jadeja’s poor tournament by smearing his second ball, a full toss, for a flat six. Next up was Zaheer Khan, who was flicked over square leg for four, then Yusuf was clubbed down the ground so flat that the non-striker Sammy fell to the ground to take evasive action. Then, Dhoni’s gamble of giving Raina the 17th over went awry, when Gayle smacked a couple more leg-side sixes. Gayle found the roof behind midwicket again in the next over, and looked set for a century when he entered the final over on 96. However, after Bravo and Ramnaresh Sarwan were sent back by Ashish Nehra, he tried to scramble back a second on the fourth delivery, but the end of his bat bumped in the air as he dived full-length to try and make his ground, and was run-out.He was given good support by three partners through the innings. First Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who never really hit top gear though he showed off a range of reverse-sweeps, set up the base with a steady 80-run stand. West Indies then sent in a pinch-hitter Sammy, who played an array of proper cricketing shots, the highlight of which was a chip for six over long-off, to collect 19 off 10 deliveries. Finally, Pollard showed his batting is as much about power as timing during a quick cameo.West Indies can bask in the glow of overwhelming India, but their celebrations will be tempered by the knowledge that they are still likely to need to beat a red-hot Australia to progress to the semi-finals.
