20-year-old Tom Beaton’s unbeaten 72 helped Western Australia to a 377-run lead on the third day of their Sheffield Shield match against South Australia. Alongside a half-century from captain Marcus North, it helped Western Australia take firm control despite four wickets Peter George.Coming into the day, Western Australia were sitting on a 72-run lead with nine wickets in hand and had to rebuild after losing nightwatchman Michael Beer early in the day. No. 4 to No. 9 all made good starts but it was only North and Beaton who passed 45.At one stage, when North fell, Western Australia were 6 for 211 with South Australia well in the game, but Beaton found solid support form Luke Ronchi, in a 37-run stand and then shared a bright stand with Nathan Coulter-Nile, who swished seven boundaries in his 41-ball 35. By the time he fell to the impressive George, Western Australia were well in control with a lead of 365.With his job now done with the bat, Coulter-Nile and his fellow bowlers have to finish off the match on the final day.

England bid for early Christmas present

December 16-20, Perth
Start time 10:30 (02:30 GMT)The Big PictureAll both teams want for Christmas is a win, but Australia would settle for a draw as a way of stopping the damage from an opponent showing few weaknesses. England lead the five-match contest 1-0 and will retain the Ashes with a victory, which is the most likely result on the form of the opening two encounters. England have never secured the urn before Christmas in their 133-year history of visits Down Under, and they may never have a better chance.

The series is only 10 days old but already it has taken a toll on both sides. Stuart Broad has been ruled out with a stomach tear and will spend his week in the Test Match Special commentary box instead of the dressing room. Simon Katich’s heel problem has forced him out of the side and Australia have called for the type of wholesale changes England teams were mocked for making between 1989 and 2002-03. It’s young talent time for the hosts, with Steven Smith (21), Phillip Hughes (22) and Michael Beer (26) coming in, and Mitchell Johnson in favour again after a week spent in the WACA nets.Apart from which fast bowler to pick to replace Broad, England’s main worry is their recent history of giving away hard-won series leads. They allowed Australia to level the 2009 Ashes after four games – but recovered to take the trophy – and also drew in South Africa after earning an early advantage. Australia are praying for more generosity this time.Form guide(most recent first)
Australia LDLLL
England WDWLWWatch out for…Mitchell Johnson is back. That would have been a scary line once, but over the past two years he has become a man of mystery. Dropped for the first time in his Test career after going wicket-less in Brisbane, Johnson has trained his way back after an intense week working with Troy Cooley, the bowling coach. The WACA is a great venue for Johnson, who has 21 wickets in three Tests, including a career-best match haul of 11 for 159. Australia need that version of Johnson in this fixture, not the ineffective model that appeared at the Gabba.
The new dad James Anderson has been to Lancashire and back over the past week to be at the birth of his second child. Over the next five days he will have to battle jet-lag and an Australia batting line-up that is determined not to be overwhelmed by England’s remodelled attack. Anderson’s control and swing will be vital, especially when he’s running into the breeze of the Fremantle Doctor. He was dropped for the Perth Test on the previous tour, but is such a better bowler than he was four years ago..Team newsAustralia’s big question surrounds whether to play Peter Siddle, the bowler who started the series with six wickets on the opening day in Brisbane. Siddle hasn’t claimed a victim in Australia’s past two innings and Ryan Harris jumped ahead of him in Adelaide. If both Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus, the in-to-the-wind man, come back in, then Siddle will probably miss out. He may get a reprieve if Beer is left out, but that will depend on the wicket on Thursday morning. Ponting is delaying naming the side until he takes one final look at the surface.

Australia (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Phillip Hughes, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Michael Hussey, 6 Steven Smith, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Michael Beer, 10 Ryan Harris, 11 Ben Hilfenhaus. It is now almost certain that Chris Tremlett will be Broad’s replacement ahead of Tim Bresnan. Despite Bresnan’s tactical nous on flat pitches, Tremlett offers extra bounce and menace with his height and will have a crucial role to play alongside Anderson, Steven Finn and Graeme Swann.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Ian Bell, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Graeme Swann, 9 James Anderson, 10 Chris Tremlett, 11 Steven Finn.Pitch and conditionsPerth is always talked up as a fast man’s favourite but over the past decade it has disappointed. Every year there is excited chatter from the locals that this time it will recapture its past glories. Maybe it will really happen this time. The pitch is expected to start with a tinge of green, but the cracking late in the match is expected to be a far greater concern to the batsmen than early seam movement. Sunny conditions are forecast throughout the game, with maximum temperatures above 30C.Stats and trivia England have won only one of 11 Tests at the WACA, with that victory coming in the Packer-depleted era of 1978-79 Australia have succeeded in 21 of 39 games here, with only nine losses. Five of those were against West Indies. Ricky Ponting is the leading the run-scorer in Tests at the WACA with 933, two more than Allan Border. David Gower is the best of the overseas players with 471 in five matches If Alastair Cook is wanting to add the highest score at the WACA to his Brisbane ground record, he must beat Matthew Hayden’s 380 against Zimbabwe in 2003-04Quotes”We are priming ourselves to play our best game so far in the series and we know we have to do it by a long way if we want to win the game.”
Ricky Ponting

“I feel like it’s part of my job as a bowler and I see myself as the leader of the attack here, so it’s important I think about what went right for us in the last two games and what we can improve on for this game.”
James Anderson had plenty time to ponder his game during 48 hours of flying in the past week

Gambhir excited by captaincy challenge

Gautam Gambhir has said he is looking forward to the ‘great challenge’ of leading India in the one-day series against New Zealand

Gautam Gambhir will captain India in the first two ODIs of the five-match series against New Zealand•AFP

Gautam Gambhir has said he is looking forward to the “great challenge” of leading India in the one-day series against New Zealand which starts on Sunday in Guwahati. It’s been a hectic season for the home side, and with the much-anticipated tour of South Africa coming up next month, India have rested many of their heavyweights – including regular captain MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh – for the first two ODIs against New Zealand.”It’s a dream, I’m really excited,” Gambhir said a day ahead of his first match as India captain. “Hopefully I can live up to the expectation. It’s a responsibility that has been given to the team [to deliver without the seniors].”The World Cup is less than three months away, but Gambhir insisted his side was not looking too far ahead. “The most important thing right now is to win the series rather than thinking about giving an opportunity to all the [fringe] players,” Gambhir said. “It’s an international series and you are playing for your country.”Guwahati has traditionally been a low-scoring venue, though Gambhir was expecting more runs this time. “270-280 seems a good total because it starts spinning in the second half,” he said. “It depends on how the wicket is. I don’t think the toss will play a big role.”Gambhir also defended a couple of his middle-order batsmen, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina, who have struggled in recent times. Yuvraj was dropped for the Asia Cup earlier this year, and has had several fitness concerns this year. “Yuvraj is the biggest match-winner India has ever had at his batting position,” Gambhir said. “He already has a half-century to his name in the last one-dayer he played and has done decently in Dambulla (in a tri-series in August) as well. It’s just about playing one big innings and then he is back to his best.”Raina has only one half-century in his previous 15 ODI innings, and had a torrid time in the Tests against New Zealand, scraping 26 runs in four innings. “You can’t compare Test cricket with one-day cricket. He has done brilliantly in one-dayers,” Gambhir said. “If you look at his last performance in ODIs, he won the match against Australia.”One of the newcomers in the squad certain to make his debut on Sunday is 26-Bengal wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who smashed an unbeaten 178 in the previous round of the Ranji Trophy. “Saha has done well in domestic cricket playing for Bengal. It’s a good opportunity for him to show his talent,” Gambhir said. “We all feel that he is a very good wicketkeeper, it’s just about scoring some runs. It’s all about carrying his momentum into international cricket. He is among the runs, so he will be feeling confident.”

Scott Walter grabbed five wickets after Chris Swan did the early damage, but Queensland lost both openers to leave the game against New South Wales delicately poised. The Blues were dismissed for 262 late in the afternoon at the Gabba, with Walter capturing 5 for 63 and Swan collecting 4 for 56.The hosts’ good mood dimmed when they slipped to 2 for 40 at stumps. Wade Townsend (9) was caught at third slip off Mark Cameron, who also had Ryan Broad (10) lbw in an important spell.New South Wales chose to bat and were in early trouble after losing Phil Jaques and Phillip Hughes by the eighth over. Usman Khawaja prevented further damage with a composed half-century, but he fell caught behind to Swan for 60 shortly after Peter Forrest went the same way.Walter yorked Peter Nevill to leave the visitors 6 for 142 but Ben Rohrer and Scott Coyte reorganised them during a stand of 77. Rohrer moved to 69 before he top-edged Walter to give Chris Hartley his fourth catch of the innings.Walter had Scott Coyte (48) lbw with another yorker and finished off the innings by having Cameron caught behind for Hartley’s fifth dismissal. Nathan Hauritz, who is captaining in the absence of Stuart Clark and Moises Henriques, showed his muscle with two sixes in his unbeaten 23.

Rangers: Van Bronckhorst should offload Niko Katic

With Giovanni van Bronckhorst surely rebuilding the Rangers squad over the summer as his first full season approaches, it could look like Niko Katic will be one player that departs the club.

The Croatian was signed by the previous manager for £2m from Slaven Belupo during his first transfer window in charge of the Ibrox side, becoming his fifth signing.

Over his first two seasons, Katic featured on a regular basis under Gerrard without ever setting the world alight. Such were his dismal performances that he was picked up a dreadful WhoScored average match rating of 6.32 and 6.49 in back to back European campaigns.

The £9k-a-week defender’s finest moment came when he scored the winner against Celtic at Parkhead in December 2019 which ended the club’s nine-year away drought over their rivals.

The 25-year-old suffered a season-ending injury in the summer of 2020 which ruled him out of the entirety of the Ibrox side’s historic Scottish Premiership winning campaign.

A loan spell to Hajduk Split in his native Croatia has enabled him to get back to fitness, featuring 25 times in all competitions and leading Hajduk to the Croatian Cup final.

The stark reality, however, is it looks like he has played his last match for Rangers.

Although Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be looking to analyse the players who are out on loan, the club has a strong contingent of centre backs. Add to the fact John Souttar will be joining from Hearts before next season and with interest in Vitesse defender Danilho Doekhi not fading away, then it could be time to cut ties.

He became a fan favourite during his first two seasons at the club, but with him being a decent earner, van Bronckhorst might just want to get him off the wage bill and bring in some funds to boost other areas of the squad. When you consider his annual salary and transfer fee, this certainly feels like £3.3m down the drain.

AND in other news, Gough 2.0: Van Bronckhorst could save Rangers millions with “superb” rarely-seen 18 y/o
