Clarke lifts Warwickshire to winning total

Warwickshire Bears preserved their slim chance of qualifying for the Clydesdale Bank 40 semi-finals with a 51-run victory over Hampshire under the Edgbaston lights.

26-Jul-2011
ScorecardWarwickshire Bears preserved their slim chance of qualifying for the Clydesdale Bank 40 semi-finals with a 51-run victory over Hampshire under the Edgbaston lights.Boosted by half-centuries from Neil Carter, Jim Troughton and Rikki Clarke, the Bears totalled a meaty 273 for 8 against a Royals side already out of contention after five defeats in eight games. James Vince underpinned the reply with a defiant 82 off 95 balls, but after he fell the Royals’ chase fizzled out quickly as they tumbled from 147 for 2 to 222 all out.Warwickshire chose to bat against a Hampshire attack which lost David Griffiths in the warm-up when he suffered an ankle injury. Second-wicket pair Carter and Will Porterfield added 67 in 53 balls. Carter has endured a tough time since returning from a pelvic injury but showed his old verve in making 53 off only 36 balls, with nine fours, and one six, before falling lbw to Danny Briggs.Porterfield opened his account with two thumping boundaries but lost momentum before lifting former Bears spinner Imran Tahir to Vince at long-off to fall for 41. Vince then pulled off a brilliant one-handed catch at extra-cover to oust Tim Ambrose but Troughton and Clarke kept the ball rolling with a stand of 60 in 53 balls.Troughton posted a polished half-century before lifting Tahir to Ben Howell at deep mid-wicket to perish for 61 while Clarke passed 50 for the second time in successive CB40 games in three days, holing out in the final over for 63.When Hampshire replied, Jimmy Adams soon lifted Chris Woakes to Varun Chopra at cover before the visitors were assisted by a recurrence of Carter’s injury problems. After delivering two no-ball full tosses in his fourth over, the left-armer limped out of the attack.Vince and Sean Ervine put on 116 in 19 overs but Ervine, having struck 47 off 52 balls, fell lbw to Kiwi spinner Jeetan Patel. Left-armer Ant Botha put the main brake on the scoring and he collected a deserved wicket when Michael Carberry slogged to deep mid-wicket.After Patel removed Vince and Liam Dawson in the space of four balls, Hampshire’s pursuit went into freefall in front of a near-6,000 crowd who had taken advantage of free admission.

Hales and Wessels set up Nottinghamshire win

Openers Alex Hales and Riki Wessels both hit half-centuries as Nottinghamshire Outlaws took another step towards the quarter-finals of the Friends Life t20 by thrashing Lancashire Lightning by 53 runs

26-Jun-2011
ScorecardOpeners Alex Hales and Riki Wessels both hit half-centuries as Nottinghamshire Outlaws took another step towards the quarter-finals of the Friends Life t20 by thrashing Lancashire Lightning by 53 runs. The pair put on 85 for the first wicket before Hales was bowled for 60 – his fourth 50 of the competition – off 38 balls with seven fours and two sixes, but Wessels went on to make 76 from 49 balls with five fours and four sixes in a total of 184 for 4.That proved enough for the hosts to extend their lead at the top of the North Group as Lancashire were bowled out for 131 in 18 overs, Andre Adams taking two for 19 in his first appearance in the competition this season. Steven Croft’s 55 off 28 balls was the only Lancashire highlight, but after he fell to former Lancashire all-rounder Steven Mullaney, the visitors slipped quickly to their fifth defeat in 10 matches.Hales was the faster of the two Notts batsmen out of the blocks as he hit two fours off the first over of the match from Simon Kerrigan, before taking three consecutive boundaries off Junaid Khan’s second over. He also pulled Sajid Mahmood for six and hit Stephen Parry for a straight maximum before the left-arm spinner got his revenge, bowling Hales in the 11th over.Wessels had just been dropped by Stephen Moore having scored 21 and went on to make the visitors pay for their miss. Adam Voges drove Parry to long-off for 17 and although Khan yorked Wessels in the 18th over, the damage had already been done.Lancashire’s hopes took an immediate dent when Moore was brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Chris Read, flying to his right for a catch off Darren Pattinson. Croft kept Lancashire up with the required rate but could not find a partner to stay with him as Tom Smith and Farveez Maharoof were both caught off miscued shots. And when Croft himself failed to clear extra cover, the rest of the Lancashire batting collapsed, Mullaney claiming 2 for 23 and Graeme White 2 for 26.

Battling Glamorgan cling on

Half-centuries from Michael Powell and Mark Wallace gave Glamorgan a lifeline going into the final day of their County Championship clash against Derbyshire at Cardiff

29-Jun-2011
ScorecardHalf-centuries from Michael Powell and Mark Wallace gave Glamorgan a lifeline going into the final day of their County Championship clash against Derbyshire at Cardiff. The visitors remained firm favourites to wrap up their first away victory of the season but Glamorgan avoided the embarrassment of an innings defeat, ending the third day on 250 for 7 as they followed on – an overall lead of 96 – after Powell (87) and Wallace (66 not out) shared in a sixth-wicket partnership worth 136.At the start of the third day Glamorgan needed 44 more runs to avoid the follow-on after resuming their first innings on 174 for 8. With captain Alviro Petersen falling in the seventh over of the morning for 93, trapped leg before by Tim Groenewald, it was left to the final pair of DeanCosker and Will Owen. But five runs short of their target, Owen was bowled by Chesney Hughes attempting a slog sweep with Glamorgan bowled out for 213. The follow-on was immediately enforced by Luke Sutton and by lunch Glamorgan had slumped again to 43 for 3 with Petersen out for the second time in the session, going leg before to Tony Palladino to a ball that kept low.In his previous over Palladino had Will Bragg lbw playing across the line and first man to go was Gareth Rees, caught behind off Jonathan Clare. The afternoon did not get much better for the home side with Ben Wright playing an ugly slash to be caught behind, giving Palladino his third wicket.Jim Allenby became the fourth Glamorgan batsman to get into the teens before perishing to Tom Knight, giving the teenager his first scalp in first-class cricket. Allenby was given out leg before by umpire John Steele but the batsman was not happy with the decision, seeming to suggest he hit it.But after that Powell, who went to his fourth half-century of the season from 111 balls with six fours, and Wallace steadied the ship and ensured Derbyshire would not celebrate an innings victory over the Welsh county for the first time in 30 years.Powell was eventually bowled by Wes Durston after being stuck on 87 for 12 balls, but despite also losing James Harris, Wallace survived into the final day.

Wells makes most of final day with ton

Sussex youngster Luke Wells took the opportunity of an County Championship match heading nowhere to score his second century of the season

07-May-2011Sussex 438 and 254 for 6 dec drew with Hampshire 480
ScorecardSussex youngster Luke Wells took the opportunity of an County Championshipmatch heading nowhere to score his second century of the season at the Rose Bowlwhere another easy-paced pitch led to a dramaless last day against Hampshire.Sussex predictably batted through before declaring their second innings 212ahead at 254 for 6, leaving Hampshire no time to respond. The visitors began the day 42 behind after each side had completed their first innings over the first three days and a draw seemed inevitable.Ed Joyce and Chris Nash put on 32 for the first wicket before slow left-armerDanny Briggs took the first of his four wickets. Joyce mistimed a sweep and top edged Briggs to square leg where Friedel de Wet clutched the opportunity.Wells signalled his intentions on arrival with a straight six off Briggs and itbecame clear the match was petering out when Sussex went in at lunch with a leadof 66 at 108 for 1. Briggs, who got through another marathon spell of 30 overs spread across the innings, struck again at 124 when Nash, who had hit six fours in his 56, choppedthe ball onto his stumps.Nash and Wells had put on 92 for the second wicket to make sure there were noalarms and the afternoon session brought little respite for the Hampshirebowlers. Murray Goodwin, the Sussex captain, was the third to go at 157, curiouslyoffering no shot to a delivery from Briggs and being bowled via the top of his pad.Five balls later De Wet struck for the first time when he had Ben Brown caughtat the wicket with the score 158 but there was still no real hope forHampshire. Wells, who made 103 earlier in the season, reached his century off 169 balls, hitting 11 fours in addition to his six.But Wells failed to go on and beat his previous best score because at 248 andhaving faced only another seven balls, Wells drove Sean Ervine to James Vincefor exactly 100.Wells and Luke Wright had put on 90 for the fifth wicket to make the game safeand by then the few spectators were already heading home. Wright perished soon afterwards, edging Briggs to Jimmy Adams after making 39 soon afterwards Goodwin decided to call a halt.Briggs was rewarded with figures of 4 for 99 as the match fell away. Hampshire, still looking for their first Division One win of the season in four attempts, finished with nine points and Sussex took seven back home along the south coast.

Diego sentiu dores no joelho direito no primeiro tempo contra o Ceará, no Castelão.

Confira no vídeo abaixo:

O elenco do Flamengo volta a treinar na terça, às 15h30, no Ninho do Urubu.

Ponting hopes Krejza can relive debut heroics

Ricky Ponting is hopeful that a strong performance by Jason Krejza in Nagpur can kickstart his World Cup campaign

Brydon Coverdale in Nagpur24-Feb-2011Jason Krejza has spent more than two years in the cricket wilderness, so it’s no surprise that he is loving every minute of his return to the top level. And if he was excited just to get the World Cup call-up, imagine how he has felt over the past few days as he prepared to return to Nagpur, the venue of debut Test, when he picked up 12 wickets, for Friday’s clash against New Zealand.”He’s been pretty excited about coming back,” Ricky Ponting said on Thursday afternoon, before the Australians hit the nets. “He wanted to come down and train early this morning, to tell you the truth, and we had to hold him back.”It was in November 2008 that offspinner Krejza made one of the most memorable debuts in recent history, when he collected 8 for 215 in the first innings against India, and another four wickets in the second. But the axe came after he failed to stem the runs against South Africa in his second Test, in Perth, the following month, and since then he has been in and out of the Tasmania side. But now Krejza has reinvented himself as an ODI bowler; still a wicket-taker, but one who can play a defensive role when necessary. His chance came because of injuries to Nathan Hauritz, Xavier Doherty and Steve O’Keefe, and after a nervy debut against England in Perth, he has started to find his rhythm.Against Zimbabwe, in Australia’s opening game of the World Cup, he built on the good work of the fast men and collected 2 for 28 from his eight overs, and he will play an important role throughout the rest of the campaign. Ponting hopes that a confident return to Nagpur on Friday could kickstart a strong tournament for Krejza, who will share the spin duties with Steve Smith and the part-timers.”To have that feeling, to know the venue and know the wicket conditions really well will definitely help him,” Ponting said. “I think in all honesty, every game he’s played on the tour, he’s improved and got better. The first two practice games and then the hit-out against Zimbabwe, I think he bowled particularly well.”He’s a wicket-taker, we know that. He puts a lot of revs on the ball, he spins the ball and at different times, with conditions looking like they have so far, there are not many wickets that haven’t spun during this tournament, and he could be a really important player for us as this tournament progresses.”Adding to the importance of spin in the match against New Zealand is the early start, with a 9.30 am (local) opening so that fans in Australia and New Zealand can watch it at a reasonable hour. That means that dew shouldn’t be an issue.”There’s been a lot of talk about dew being a major factor but with it being a day game, it shouldn’t be much of a factor so it should make the contest a bit more even and fairer,” Ponting said. “Big scores have been made here and that indicates it’s a very good batting wicket; even the game here played the other night, there were a lot of runs and the wicket seemed to hold together very well and didn’t change much during the course of the game.”As well as hoping for a strong performance from their own slow bowlers, the Australians must ensure they handle New Zealand’s spinners with aplomb, after struggling against Ray Price and his colleagues on Monday. Nathan McCullum is likely to open the bowling, while Daniel Vettori also practised with the new ball in the nets on Thursday, and Ponting said his men were ready for the challenge.”We’ve had a good talk about that this morning. I think they might do that; we think it might be McCullum that might do it,” he said. “We’re also prepared for Vettori, and Price opened the bowling the other day for Zimbabwe and did a good job against the right-handers, so there’s also that option there for New Zealand if that’s the way they want to go. We’ll be well prepared.”The Australians arrived in Nagpur on Wednesday night, after staying on for an extra couple of days in Ahmedabad after their opening game. The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy will also be up for grabs on Friday, while the players will wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence before the game in tribute to the victims of the Christchurch earthquake.
