Chance extra! Vasco visita o Santos pra quebrar jejum e novo rumo no BR

A vez é agora, Vasco!

'Take a single … I shall do the rest' – Smith

Dwayne Smith, the Mumbai Indians allrounder, has said that he backed himself to score 14 off the last three balls in his first IPL match of the season

ESPNcricinfo staff07-May-2012″Take a single and give me the strike, I shall do the rest,” is what Mumbai Indians allrounder Dwayne Smith said he told RP Singh when 15 runs were needed off the last four balls against Chennai Super Kings. Smith, who was playing his first match of the season, backed himself to score 14 off the final three deliveries, and he did.Chasing 174, Mumbai Indians were ahead for most of the innings, with Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma putting on a 126-run stand. Following Tendulkar’s dismissal for 74, they needed 40 off 25 balls with eight wickets in hand. Mumbai Indians then lost five wickets for 24, leaving Smith and Lasith Malinga to score 16 off the final over, from Ben Hilfenhaus.Smith managed just a single off Hilfenhaus’ first ball, and then watched Malinga get bowled by a yorker. RP Singh pushed the third ball to cover, and gave Smith what he wanted, the strike. “I just backed myself. I know as long as I can watch the ball I can do it,” Smith said. “I told him to give me the three balls that were left as I knew I could do it from there.”Having been ignored at the 2012 player auction, Smith was signed by Mumbai Indians as a replacement for the injured Mitchell Johnson and only joined the squad on May 3. “I actually thought I was going to be here with one of the teams from the beginning, but that didn’t happen,” he said. “But I am happy to be here now and win some games for Mumbai. I remember winning a game for Barbados in similar fashion. It went into the super over. I got two sixes off the last two balls.”Smith clubbing the last three balls for six and two fours to the straight boundary kept Mumbai Indians at No. 3 in the points table and prevented Chennai Super Kings from progressing from No. 4.The Super Kings coach, Stephen Fleming, said that his team were “favourites going into that last over”. “It was an amazing game of cricket, [we have] mixed emotions really,” Fleming said. “There was phenomenal see-sawing throughout the day. Through their batting innings we were down and out but we fought back with some great fielding.”The challenge, according to Fleming, would be to lift the players’ spirits after such a defeat and get them ready for the final quarter of their league campaign. “We must win three from four games, we played pretty well today and if I get the same performance from my players for the next four games then I think we’ll go close,” he said. “It’s a flat dressing room now but that’s the challenge, we have a few days off which is good. We’re still in the competition and won’t give up.”

The case for Hodge batting higher up

Rajasthan Royals have done several things right in this IPL, but one area where they’ve messed up so far is in utilising the services of Brad Hodge

S Rajesh21-Apr-2012

So far in IPL 2012, Brad Hodge averages 64.50 with a strike rate of 157.31•AFP

Rajasthan Royals have done several things right in this IPL, but one area where they’ve messed up so far is in utilising the services of Brad Hodge. Quite apart from the fact that Hodge is one of their key overseas players, Hodge is also one of the best batsmen in the Twenty20 format. In 146 Twenty20 innings, Hodge has scored 4355 runs at an average of 36.59 and a strike-rate of 128.15; only David Hussey has scored more runs in this format. Also, Hodge has struck 453 fours in Twenty20 cricket, which is easily the highest – Brendon McCullum, in second place, only has 355. Hodge is also one of only three players – David Hussey and Albie Morkel are the others – to play 150 or more Twenty20 matches (Saturday’s game against Chennai Super Kings was his 150th).His experience and his overall record are compelling enough reasons for Hodge to be regarded as one of the key players for Royals, but perhaps an even more compelling reason is his form in IPL 2012: he has faced 82 balls in six innings, scored 129 runs, and been dismissed just twice, for an average of 64.50 and a strike rate of 157.31. Among batsmen who’ve faced at least 60 deliveries in this IPL, Hodge’s strike-rate is third-best, fractionally behind Kevin Pietersen (158.16) and Chris Gayle (157.69). He has already played two top-class innings in the tournament so far – 44 off 29 against Kolkata Knight Riders, and an unbeaten 48 off 21 against Deccan Chargers in a successful run-chase of 197. Both efforts won him the Man-of-the-Match awards. And yet, Royals’ think-tank, in all their immense wisdom, have decided that Hodge shouldn’t generally be batting in the top four – only twice in six innings has Hodge batted at No.4. Instead, the responsibility of batting in the top four has been thrust upon Ashok Menaria, a 21-year-old with some potential, but with little of the Twenty20 batting skills or track record that Hodge possesses: in 20 Twenty20 innings so far, Menaria has scored 385 runs at an average of 20.26 and a strike-rate of 117.02. In six innings of IPL 2012, Menaria’s returns have been very similar – an average of 19.83 at a strike-rate of 110.18. Despite these modest numbers, Menaria has continued to bat in the top four – he has batted at three or four in five out of six innings – and has considerably slowed down Royals’ momentum in the middle overs. In the match against Chargers, for example, Menaria came in at No.3 and scored 22 off 20 when the asking-rate was around ten an over; Hodge came in at No.5 in the same match and slammed 48 off 21.Perhaps Royals view Hodge as a finisher only, who should come in to bat when the situation gets desperate. Perhaps they want to give ample opportunity to a young Indian player, given that this is, after all, the Premier League. Either way, this strategy defies logic. Of the 146 innings that Hodge has played in Twenty20 cricket, 115 have been in the top three, where he has scored 28 fifties and two hundreds, and has a strike-rate of 128.86. And in a format as condensed as 20-over cricket, there’s no such thing as a batting line-up being too top heavy: the best batsmen to get as many deliveries as possible. The team got away with it a couple of times, but paid the price against Super Kings, when Menaria took 34 deliveries to score 36 and considerably dampened the momentum in the middle overs. When he finally got out and Hodge came in, only seven deliveries remained in the innings. Royals still managed to make Super Kings sweat despite scoring only 146, but perhaps it’s a good thing they lost – the result should hopefully force them to make the key change in their batting line-up. If Hodge does move up the order, Royals will have two of the three highest run-getters in this format in their top four – Owais Shah, with 3825 runs, has the third-highest aggregate in Twenty20 cricket.

ESPNcricinfo previews the second Twenty20 in Dubai between Pakistan and England in their three-match series

The Preview by David Hopps24-Feb-2012Match factsSaturday February 25, Dubai International Cricket Stadium
Start time 2000 (1600 GMT)England are likely to persist with young talent such as Jonny Bairstow in the middle order, with their World Twenty20 defence in mind•Getty Images

Big PictureThirty-five runs from the last five overs with seven wickets left are, as England’s Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad ruefully observed on Thursday night, “the positions you want to win from”. But it was Pakistan who closed out England by eight runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. That points to England’s quandary six months before the World Twenty20. In Jonny Bairstow and Joss Buttler, they remain convinced they have the best two young T20 players in the country. But they have only nine T20 international appearances between them and minimal experience in Asian conditions. With the World Twenty20 to be played in Sri Lanka in September, England need them to learn fast.Pakistan’s win caused Misbah-ul-Haq’s reputation as an international captain to lurch back to the positive. In the Tests he was portrayed as just the sort of experienced hand Pakistan needed. In the ODIs he was held to be unimaginative and ready to be moved on. In the first T20, he played a decisive role with the bat and then, in England’s innings, fielded tactical suggestions from rather more senior professionals than he would have liked before receiving excessive praise for doing the blindingly obvious and saving his best bowlers until last. If Pakistan win the series he will probably lead them into World Twenty20.Form guidePakistan: WWWWW
England: LWLWW
Players to watchHammad Azam made his T20 international debut in the first match, not that many people would have noticed as he did not bat (he was due in at No. 8) and then Misbah chose not to bowl him in a tense situation. He is 20 years old, from Attock in the Punjab. England eyes will be on Eoin Morgan more than most. He has yet to hit a half-century on the tour.Team news Pakistan will have no appetite for changes after winning on Thursday. England often give a defeated side a chance to make amends and seem to have taken a view about Alex Hales batting limitations in Asia ahead of World Twenty20. Any clamour for Alastair Cook to play – well, it would be a good story – is likely to be resisted, but the choice between Tim Bresnan or Steven Finn might be more open.Pakistan: (probable) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Awais Zia, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Hammad Azam, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Junaid KhanEngland: (probable) 1 Kevin Pietersen, 2 Craig Kieswetter 3 Ravi Bopara, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Jonathan Bairstow, 6 Jos Buttler, 7 Samit Patel, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Jade Dernbach, 11 Steven FinnPitch and conditions The par score in Dubai is around 140 and Pakistan just achieved that with 144-6 in the opening match. Expectations are for something similar on Saturday.Stats and triviaIf Pakistan win the last two matches they will equal their best run of seven consecutive T20 victories.Mushtaq Mohammad, the former Pakistan all-rounder, has named Mohammad Hafeez as the man who should become Pakistan’s next one-day captain.Graeme Swann’s three wickets on Thursday moved him up to joint sixth in the T20I wicket-takers’ list, level with Broad on 37.Quotes “Broady is a single man and a good-looking man. He’s England captain. Why wouldn’t she want to marry him? But, having heard her voice screeching through our ears all night, I’m not sure he’ll be too keen to accept her offer.”
“I would like to see Pakistani players participating in the IPL. The BCCI and the PCB should sit together and sort out the issue.”

'Playing every game like it is my last' – David Hussey

David Hussey believes playing in the 2015 World Cup is a realistic goal despite his age, and he has said that he still harbours hopes of making the Australia Test team

Brydon Coverdale07-Feb-2012

David Hussey has been dropped and recalled from Australia’s one-day team so many times that he treats every innings as his last. It’s an approach that worked during Sunday’s win over India at the MCG, where he made an important unbeaten 61. It’s also a method that he hopes can carry him through until the 2015 World Cup, which he believes is a realistic goal despite his age.Hussey will be 37 by then, but he wants to make himself such an indispensable part of the side that John Inverarity’s selection panel cannot help but keep picking him. Inverarity said in selecting the squad for the start of the Commonwealth Bank Series that the focus would switch more towards World Cup planning over the next year, which could mean the phasing out of older players. At 34, Hussey is in that bracket. But he has played only 40 one-day internationals and is desperate to keep adding to that tally, and still dreams of winning a baggy green. He hopes that if he can carry his form through the tri-series and help Australia win the tournament he can show that he has plenty left to offer, after he was part of the Australia squad that was knocked out in the quarter-finals of last year’s World Cup.”You want to be in a winning World Cup, it’s probably second to playing Test cricket for Australia,” Hussey said. “It is realistic [playing in 2015]. I want to keep doing well. If you keep doing well you give the selectors a hard task to make that phone call to say you’re not in the team. If I keep doing well and contributing to the team’s success, you just never know. It’s very hard to drop someone from a series win.”Being dropped is something Hussey knows all too much about. Since he made his ODI debut nearly four years ago, he has been in and out of the side. But his recent form is good. Since being recalled last summer he has averaged 44.77 with the bat and has picked up 11 wickets at 21.18. It’s the sort of form most ODI players would be thrilled with, but Hussey is still wary of how quickly things can change.”Every innings is like the last innings for me,” he said. “Hopefully I can contribute to team success and you never know, if your name pops up at the right time you might get that chance of playing Test cricket. I love playing for Australia and I’ve probably been dropped 14 times now – I don’t want to be dropped again. At the moment I’m really enjoying it, playing every game like it is my last. It’s working so far.”[Being dropped is] one of those things, you spit the dummy for a day or two, offload on your wife and get back on the horse. What keeps you going is that goal of playing for Australia. You dust yourself off and get back out there.”The body is healthy and I’m batting as well as I ever have. Hopefully that does continue. I still feel as fresh as ever and I love playing the game. I want to keep going. Playing for Australia is the pinnacle and I still harbour hopes of playing Test cricket. If I do well in the one-day arena you never know, a few doors may open.”There’s also the desire not to be outshone by the newer members of the side. Hussey’s Victoria team-mate Matthew Wade has made a strong start to his international career and Peter Forrest is expected to be given an opportunity in one of the next two games. The mix of experience and youth in the side worked on Sunday, and Hussey believes it is a good approach.”At the moment it’s a really good balance,” he said. “You still get a lot from Ricky Ponting and watching Michael Clarke play and some of the older boys playing. But what it does do with the injection of youth, it keeps the older players doing well and working so hard at their game to increase their level of play. Watching Matt Wade come out the other night and play as well as he has really does motivate you to elevate your game to a new level.”Hussey will fly to Perth on Wednesday ahead of Australia’s second match in the tri-series, against Sri Lanka on Friday. Australia then move on to Adelaide to play India two days later.
