A magnificent century from James Vince carried Hampshire to a crushing nine wicket victory over Essex in the opening Yorkshire Bank 40 match of the new season at Chelmsford.Vince smashed an unbeaten 129 from 93 deliveries and shared in an opening partnership of 156 in only 17 overs with Michael Carberry as the visitors surpassed the target with 10.2 overs to spare.Their blitz on the Essex bowlers saw them raise the 100 in a mere 9.2 overs with Reece Topley and Sajid Mahmood suffering most. Mahmood, making his first appearance for the county following his move from Lancashire, conceded 34 runs in his first two overs while Topley went for 26.Vince needed just 27 deliveries to record his half-century and a further 44 to move into three figures with the help of 15 fours and a six. By then, he had lost Carberry for 65 made off 51 balls and containing eight fours and a six. He departed when giving a return catch to Graham Napier but that proved Essex’s solitary success as Jimmy Adams, with an unbeaten 29, helped Vince to see them home. In all, Vince hit 17 fours and a six and was just two runs short of equaling his competition best.Hampshire’s triumph came after a late surge from Napier and Greg Smith had led Essex to what appeared a challenging total. They added 93 in 51 deliveries for the sixth wicket after coming together in the 31st over with the total on 143.Napier, fresh from his heroics in the Championship victory two days earlier when he scored an unbeaten 78, made 50 from 29 balls before he was caught on the boundary from the last ball of the innings. Napier’s effort contained two sixes and five fours while Smith made 43, which included a six and six fours from 33 deliveries until he was bowled by Chris Wood..Earlier Australian left-hander Bobby Quiney struck a fluent 71 from 87 balls with the help of six fours and a six. His effort ended when he was bowled by Hamza Riazuddin after sharing in half-century stands with fellow opener Tom Westley (34) and Mark Pettini. But there was no joy for Ravi Bopara who had hoped to celebrate his inclusion in England’s Champions Trophy squad. He was bowled attempting to attack left-arm spinner Danny Briggs, a dismissal that completed a miserable week for him with the bat. In the Championship match against Hampshire, he failed to reach double figures in either innings and in eight trips to the middle this season, he has only once topped fifty.
The preview for the fourth ODI between South Africa and Pakistan in Durban
The Preview by Firdose Moonda20-Mar-2013Match facts March 21, Kingsmead Start time 1000 local (0800GMT)Graeme Smith has shown uneasiness against Pakistan’s opening bowlers, something he’ll have to turn around quickly to keep his detractors at bay•Associated Press
Big Picture The series has reached its crossroad. Either it will be decided in Durban – in which case South Africa will seal a trophy and begin to change perceptions about the venue being a hoodoo ground – or Pakistan will further rubberstamp that theory and take a still-alive contest to Benoni on Sunday. After two one-sided games in Bloemfontein and Centurion, the series ignited at the Wanderers where a high-scoring match offered a glimpse into both teams’ strengths and weaknesses. Pakistan still have the ability to bounce back from the unlikeliest of situations, South Africa still get themselves into winning positions and freeze when that changes. In Johannesburg, they thawed just in time to stop the Shahid Afridi juggernaut but his innings will give Pakistan belief. They know that Kingsmead is must-win for them, but they also know that they could not have asked for a better venue to face that kind of challenge. Apart from a pitch that should suit them, Pakistan will have massive support in Durban, which may leave South Africa feeling up against it.The home team’s main focus is consistency and the only way for them to start building some of that will be to win the next two matches. Without Faf du Plessis, their middle order will be thoroughly tested as they aim for that.Pakistan also have injury worries, which will affect their bowling combinations. That said, at this late stage of a tour, bench strength is bound to be exposed and the unit that has the ability to use its best will deservedly come out on top.Form guide South Africa: WLWWL (most recent first) Pakistan: LWLLWPlayers to watchEvery few months, Graeme Smith’s name comes up as a candidate for the chop in South Africa’s limited-overs teams and every time it happens, he responds with a decent score. It’s happened again, with his 116 against New Zealand forgotten in the shadows of the 30, 10 and 3 he has notched up in the series so far. What is more noticeable than a lack of runs is his increasing uneasiness against Pakistan’s opening bowlers. He has never been an attractive player and often wills his way to big scores, and the stage is set for that to happen again.By the same token, his opposite number, Nasir Jamshed, is also under pressure to produce. After back to back hundreds against India, Jamshed’s potential was obvious but he has not replicated that in South Africa. He looks confident and plays a few aggressive strokes but is often guilty of giving his wicket away. His often comical fielding has come under scrutiny as well and with calls for Kamran Akmal to open, he may realise the time has come to step up.Team newsFaf du Plessis has been ruled out of the series with a lower back problem which will present an opportunity to either David Miller, who was already in the squad or Quinton de Kock, who was brought in. It’s far likelier that Miller will play ahead of de Kock. Kyle Abbott may be called on to play at his home ground in place of either Rory Kleinveldt or Lonwabo Tsostobe. Morne Morkel, who still recovering from his hamstring strain, was spotted having a long stint in the nets on the match eve, so a return for him cannot be ruled out either.South Africa (probable) 1 Graeme Smith 2 Hashim Amla 3 Colin Ingram, 4 AB de Villiers (capt & wk), 5 David Miller/Quinton de Kock, 6 Farhaan Behardien, 7 Ryan McLaren 8 Robin Peterson 9 Dale Steyn, 10 and 11 Kyle Abbott/Rory Kleinveldt/Morne MorkelPakistan are waiting on Umar Gul and Mohammad Irfan’s availability and have drafted Sohail Tanvir into the squad as cover. Tanvir has been in good form with both bat and ball for the Lions franchise and so, even if either of the pair is fit, he may still be considered in place of Wahab Riaz. Kaman Akmal appears to have moved up the order and the batting line-up is likely to remain unchanged. Pressure on Younis Khan after a few poor matches means that Asad Shafiq could come back in.Pakistan (probable) 1 Nasir Jamshed, 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Kamran Akmal (wk), 4 Younis Khan/Asad Shafiq, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Umar Gul/Wahab Riaz/Sohail Tanvir, 9 Saeed Ajmal 10 Junaid Khan, 11 Mohammsd Irfan/Sohail TanvirPitch and conditionsMention Durban and two things come to mind: un-South African conditions and rain. At least only the former is expected to make an appearance in this match. The surface will be slower than any othervenue that has been used in the series so far and it is said to favour opposition more than it does the hosts. South Africa will mindful of changing that perception and the weather should play its part inallowing them to do that. A clear, sunny day is forecast for Durban with no precipitation.Stats and trivia Pakistan hold the record for the highest innings total at Kingsmead. Their 351 for 4 in the 2006-07 season included Shahid Afridi’s score of 77 off 35 balls and they beat South Africa by 141 runs The last time South Africa won two consecutive ODIs in a series was more than a year ago, when they beat New Zealand 3-0 in February-March 2012Quotes”When you miss key players in important games, it’s a loss but it tests your depth as a squad, which is important going into the Champions Trophy in England.” “I truly believe we’re heading in the right direction, especially from the bowling side of things. The guys are coming up with very clear gameplans and they know exactly what they want to do.” AB de Villiers is pleased with the progress South Africa have made

Shane Watson’s return to India ahead of the fourth Test in Delhi will create a selection conundrum if the captain Michael Clarke is passed fit after suffering back pain in Mohali

Shane Watson could be flying back to lead Australia in the fourth Test•Associated Press
Shane Watson’s return to India ahead of the fourth Test in Delhi will create a selection conundrum if the captain Michael Clarke is passed fit after suffering back pain in Mohali.Although Watson remains the vice-captain and is almost certain to lead the side if Clarke is ruled out, his batting form has been disappointing for some time and strong performances from Steven Smith and Phillip Hughes in Mohali would make either of them unlucky to be dropped. These are the questions faced by Clarke, the coach Mickey Arthur and on-duty selector Rod Marsh when the team begins training in Delhi on Wednesday, ahead of the fourth Test, which starts on Friday. Watson will be back with the group having flown home for the birth of his first child, but his trip home was also controversial because of his comments about being one of four players axed for the third Test for disciplinary reasons. When he left Chandigarh, Watson said he considered the punishment “very harsh” and he would use his time at home to weigh up his cricket future. But after the birth of his son Will, Watson has reconciled with Cricket Australia and decided to rejoin the tour. Despite all of Cricket Australia’s assurances that everybody is now on the same page, Watson’s return could lead to some tension given his emotional comments on leaving India.”I am very comfortable that Shane has accepted the punishment,” Arthur said on Tuesday. “We have had a lot of conversations over the last week and they have all been very good. He didn’t agree with the penalty but he agreed that they had done wrong. We have pretty much got that sorted and we have had numerous conversations and I am really comfortable with where it sits with Watto, we are really happy to have him back.”I’ve spoken to Watto a lot, he has been incredibly supportive of where this team is moving to and really wants to be part of it. Once the emotion went away from Watto, he was very, very supportive of what we want to do with the team.”The main question now is how Australia can squeeze Watson into the batting line-up, given the success of Smith and the way Hughes fought through his spin demons in the second innings in Mohali. By contrast, Watson has averaged only 25.20 since taking over the Test vice-captaincy, which Arthur conceded was a concern. If Clarke is ruled out the likely scenario is a straight swap with Watson, but if Clarke plays then the possible combinations become harder to determine. There are also decisions to be made around the bowling attack after the decision to send Mitchell Starc home for ankle surgery, but given Watson is not bowling on this tour his place can only be considered in the context of the top six.”We haven’t given it a thought yet,” Arthur said. “We are really happy to get Shane back. It is really important he came back. Shane’s been exceptional over the last week we’ve had numerous conversations with him. In terms of selection there are a couple of variables right now, Pup’s back and Starcy going home. We’ll sit down once we have a look at conditions and we’ll get it pretty much sorted tomorrow.”Watson’s form is a concern. He looks like he’s going to get runs every time he goes to the wicket, he just hasn’t kicked on. Watto is the first one to admit that he needs a big score, there’s no doubt about that. I’m backing him in to get one pretty soon and then hopefully when he gets it, that just opens the floodgates for more and more runs.”Arthur confirmed that despite the events of the past week Watson remained the vice-captain and likely candidate to lead if Clarke does not play in Delhi. He said that would be a decision for the selectors on duty. Arthur is one of those three selectors while another is Clarke, who said after the Mohali Test he expected Watson would lead if he could not play.”I am comfortable that if Pup doesn’t come up he could do the job,” Arthur said. “That could be a discussion with the other on-duty selectors as to what we did but Shane at the moment is vice-captain. You would have to assume that because he is still the vice-captain that we probably wouldn’t go past him, but again that would be a discussion.”Arthur said it was impossible to rule Clarke out given the way he has managed his ongoing back injury in the past – he has never missed a Test because of it – but he said Clarke’s place in the team would not be decided until closer to the match.”He is in a bit of pain,” Arthur said. “With Michael Clarke you never say never. He will give himself every opportunity to get himself ready for the Test. That will pan out closer to the time and will give him every opportunity to get up for it because he is such a vital cog in our team.”

A first-innings six-wicket haul by Azam Hussain followed by an all-round team effort helped Karachi Blues demolish Islamabad by an innings and 33 runs at the Diamond Club Ground, Islamabad. Islamabad ended their league stage on 18 points and although they have qualified for the super-eight along with Karachi Blues, their final position in the table will depend on the result of other group matches.Islamabad, after being put in to bat, had collapsed to 73 for 7, but recovered to finish on 197 in their first innings. Hussain, with his left-arm spin, picked up the 11th five-wicket haul of his career. The Blues responded with 345 in their first innings, with Khurram Manzoor’ 79 being the highest score. Three other batsmen scored half-centuries in the innings to give the Blues a 148-run lead. Islamabad’s batting collapsed a second time in the match, with their innings lasting 42.2 overs, and the team failed to clear the deficit. Akbar-ur-Rehman was the most successful bowler for the Blues, picking up three wickets for 63 runs.Lahore Shalimar collected nine points for their innings win against Hyderabad at the Gaddafi Stadium and went to the top of Group II. Second-placed Rawalpindi are just three points behind with the result of their match pending. Shalimar chose to field and their bowlers justified the decision by bowling out Hyderabad in the 44th over for 103. Aizaz Cheema was the pick of the bowlers with five wickets.Shalimar’s response was led by an unbeaten century by Usman Salahuddin who helped the team take a 243-run first-innings lead. Fast bowler Rehan Riaz took five wickets in the innings. But the lead turned out to be enough for Shalimar’s bowlers as they dismissed Hyderabad for 218 in the second innings. Wahab Riaz, who had three wickets in the first innings, picked up four in the second. Hyderabad, who ended the league stage on 18 points, have also qualified for super-eight stage.Centuries from Sohaib Maqsood and Naved Yasin gave Multan three points against Sialkot at the Multan Cricket Stadium, but Multan couldn’t convert it to victory, which would have given them a Super-Eights spot. After being put in to bat, Sialkot lost wickets regularly – spinner Zulfiqar Babar took seven wickets – and no one besides Majid Jahangir, who scored a century, provided any resistance. Babar’s bowling was backed up by a commanding batting performance, led by a 150-run stand between Maqsood and Yasin. Ultimately, though, Sialkot’s No. 3 and 4 consumed time on the final day to force a draw. After bowling their opponents out for 189, Multan lost two early wickets to be reduced to 33 for 2. However, the next three batsmen in the line-up – Saeed Anwar, Maqsood and Yasin – rescued them, and Multan were strong at 289 for 4. No. 7 Maqbool Ahmed scored an unbeaten half-century to help his team cross 400. But time prevented them to get more than three points out of the game, and in the final standing, they were three points behind their opponents, at the fifth spot.Spinner Atif Maqbool and seamer Adeel Malik took nine wickets between them to help Karachi Whites cement their spot in the Super Eights, as they drew their match against Faisalabad at the Mirpur Cricket Stadium. However, they were bowled out for 207 in their second dig as medium-fast bowler Samiullah Khan took six wickets, and Faisalabad needed 357 runs to win the contest. At 213 for 6 on the final day, with Faislabad having no chances of qualifying for the next stage, both sides agreed to a draw. After choosing to field, Faisalabad were pegged back right from the outset, as the openers put on 103 runs. The Whites’ dominant innings was based on knocks of 90 and 83 from Daniyal Ahsan and Khalid Latif. The last six wickets fell for 44 runs, as seamer Asad Ali took seven wickets, to leave them three short of 300. In reply, Zeeshan Butt scored an unbeaten half-century, but didn’t find valuable support from any other batsman, and Faisalabad were bowled out for 148. Although the Whites were dismissed for 207 in their second dig, rescued by Khald Latif’s century, Faisalabad still faced a daunting task of chasing 357. Their batsmen put up a decent performance, but the match was drawn on the final day.In Lahore, Imran Farhat’s triple-century in the first innings led Lahore Ravi to three points in a drawn match against Peshawar. Farhat struck 50 fours in his knock of 308, off 429 deliveries, as Ravi declared their innings at 512 for 6 on the second day. Their spinners Adnan Rasool and Jahangir Mirza shared seven wickets between them to bowl Peshawar out for 209. However, the match was drawn when Peshawar reached 59 for 3 off 37 overs, on the final day. Peshawar finished the league stage at the bottom of the points table, and Ravi took the third spot.Choosing to field, they were dominated by Ravi from the outset as Farhat built a huge total. In reply, they were in trouble at 42 for 3, and a half-century from Naved Khan and a knock of 40 from Mohammad Rizwan took them past 200, but they couldn’t avoid the follow-on. But having secured three points, and with less time, Ravi couldn’t push for victory.Rawalpindi secured their spot behind Lahore Shalimar at the top of the points table by taking three points off their drawn contest against Bahawalpur. Umar Amin’s century, and half-centuries from Umar Amin and Hammad Azam took them to a commanding total of 404 for 7. Although Bahawalpur’s captain and opener Usman Tariq also scored a century, they fell 88 short of their opponents’ total, thereby conceding three points. Eventually, both sides agreed to draw the game.Bahawalpur finished the league stage positioned second from bottom in Group II.

A round-up of the first round of Qaid-e-Azam trophy matches
ESPNcricinfo staff30-Dec-2012 ScorecardLahore Shalimar bowled out Karachi Whites for well under 200 twice in the game, helped by Aizaz Cheema’s ten wickets, to set to up a crushing ten-wicket win. With Fawad Alam’s 53 the only significant contribution, Whites could only manage 170 in their first innings after choosing to bat, as Cheema ran through the middle and lower order to claim 6 for 62. Then, Shalimar’s top order all got into double digits to make sure they took charge. They finished with a lead of 84, which was amplified when their bowlers knocked over both Whites’ openers for ducks in their second gig.Whites were still trailing by 30 runs, and had lost four wickets when they started the third day. They took the lead, but kept losing wickets, the last six falling for 47, to finish at 142. Zia-ul-Haq got rid of both the set batsmen – Saad Ali and Saeed Bin Nasir – and only three of them reached double figures.Lahore Shalimar achieved their target of 59 without losing a wicket, and took nine points from the match. ScorecardLack of time prevented Karachi Blues from achieving a win against Quetta, in a one-sided contest in Karachi. The Blues, however, received three points, owing to a first-innings lead of 260. This was made possible through centuries by opener Khurram Manzoor and captain Faisal Iqbal, and eight wickets claimed by spinners Azam Hussain and Misbah Khan. By then, the match was well into its third day, and the Blues, despite declaring their second innings at 14 for 1, couldn’t take more than three wickets in Quetta’s chase, which was called off after 74.3 overs on the final day.Besides the knock of 162 by Manzoor and 117 by Iqbal, there were two half-centuries and a knock of 49, as the Blues strung together some useful partnerships. The third-wicket stand between Manzoor and Iqbal was worth 196 runs, and despite a few quick wickets falling thereafter, the seventh-wicket stand of 96 runs between Akbar-ur-Rahman and Tanvir Ahmed pushed their score towards 500.On the contrary, Quetta kept losing wickets regularly. Badar Ali and Taimur Ali scored half-centuries, but no one else provided any resistance as Azam and Misbah ran through the line-up. Blues only played five overs in the second innings, to give themselves time to bowl the opposition out, but that ultimately wasn’t enough. Ali Asad, with 63, led Quetta to 127 for 3 before the match was declared a draw. ScorecardFog and rain disrupted two days of cricket at the Iqbal stadium, with neither side completing an innings, a draw was the only possible result. Faisalabad appeared to be, marginally, the better side of the two, though, as they scored 120 for 4 in reply to Bahawalpur’s first-innings total of 181.Bahawalpur, put in to bat, fell apart after a 64-run opening stand, with quicks Naseer Akram and Ehsan Adil chipping away at the batting order, taking eight wickets between them. Faisalabad replied positively, despite two bursts of quick wickets, and ended the third day looking good to go past Bahawalpur’s total. But that couldn’t happen. ScorecardA spirited fourth-innings century by Rizwan Ahmed helped Hyderabad secure a draw against Abbottabad at the Niaz Stadium. After low first-innings total by both teams, Abbottabad scored 275 to give Hyderabad a stiff target to chase. Despite a shaky start, they eventually lost only four wickets, till the match was declared a draw.A knock of 84 from captain Yasir Hameed was the only one of note in Abbottabad’s first innings. Spinners Zahi Mahmood and Shoaib Laghari took eight of their wickets. But Hyderabad couldn’t back this bowling performance with effective batting. They lost their first five wickets for 48 runs and, although Mir Ali’s 66 provided them with some respite, their last four wickets fell for 11 runs, to be bowled out for 170.Abbottabad consolidated their lead through a collective batting effort, with Hameed and Yasir Shah scoring fifties, and three other batsmen scoring more than 34 runs. They sniffed victory when two of Hyderabad’s batsmen were dismissed cheaply. Two productive stands followed, and Rizwan Ahmed and Mir Ali featured in an unbeaten stand of 119, to thwart Abbottabad. ScorecardShehzad Azam bowled Islamabad to a convincing 71-run victory over Multan to take them to the top of the points table in Group I. After the first two days were lost to rain and fog, both the teams mutually agreed to forfeit their first innings and played only their second innings in order to achieve a result.Islamabad were put in to bat on the third day and lost half their team for 83 before 23-year old Shan Masood, who fell short of his third first-class century by a run, took the team to a respectable total of 209.Multan were left with the fourth day to chase 210 but collapsed to 138 within 44 overs, falling to the medium-pace attack of Islamabad led by Shehzad Azam who dismissed five out of the top seven batsmen. Only Rizwan Haider showed some resistance once wickets started falling with a quick-fire half-century which included eight fours and a six. ScorecardThe Group I fixture between Sialkot and Lahore Ravi ended in a draw which saw only 74 overs being bowled after three days out of four were lost due to rain. These two teams also agreed to play only their second innings, but the fourth day was not enough to produce a result. After Sialkot were put in to bat, they declared at their score of 117 for 1, scoring at less than two runs per over. Ravi were not left with much time to bat and when they were at 28 for 1 after 11 overs, the match ended in a draw and the two teams received two points each.
