No instant cure for Indian cricket, says Dalmiya

Jagmohan Dalmiya, the former BCCI president who will carry out the day-to-day administration of the Indian board following N Srinivasan’s decision to step aside temporarily while the investigation into corruption in the IPL is on, has said he is keen to restore Indian cricket’s “good name”, but did not promise “instant results”.Speaking a day after his appointment as temporary BCCI head, Dalmiya said he did not have “any medicine [with which] you get an instant result. We don’t have any such kind of a magic. We will try our best … [to see that] the good name of cricket is retained.”Dalmiya remained noncommittal on whether he will represent India at the ICC while at the BCCI’s helm. “I may or may not represent BCCI at ICC, no decision has been taken yet,” he said. “I am entitled, it is my choice.”He confirmed that Sanjay Jagdale, who tendered his resignation as BCCI secretary on Friday in wake of the scandal, will not return to his post. However, Ajay Shirke, who stepped down as board treasurer, had still not confirmed his exit, Dalmiya said: “As far as Jagdale is concerned, he has told us that he does not want to continue as secretary. But we have not been able to communicate with Shirke so far. We are hoping that we would be able to get a reply [on whether he has reconsidered his decision] from him by tomorrow. We will wait till tomorrow.”When asked about the process by which Jagdale would be replaced, Dalmiya was again noncommittal: “Whether [the power to appoint a new secretary is] available [to me] or not, you will come know tomorrow. I think I have been given adequate powers by the board. But I am not concerned about whether I have powers or not. My concern is that I want to do my duty.”BCCI aside, Dalmiya has headed the ICC previously, and is widely credited to be one of the chief architects who laid the foundation for Indian cricket to become the financial powerhouse it is. This time though, 73-year-old Dalmiya said he would not be looking to call the shots for too long. “I will be happy if I can serve cricket. That is enough for me. I don’t have any wishful thinking.”

PCB contemplate series-based broadcast deal

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is contemplating a series-by-series deal with broadcasters for their forthcoming matches in this season

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is contemplating a series-based deal with broadcasters for the forthcoming matches in this season. Pakistan are scheduled to play two Tests, five ODIs and two T20s against South Africa in Sharjah and Dubai, from October 14. They are also scheduled to play Sri Lanka in the UAE, although the two boards have not confirmed the dates. The PCB is yet to finalise a broadcasting deal after its five-year contract with TEN Sports, worth $140 million, ended last month. However, the PCB incurred a loss of nearly $80 million on this deal, following the cancellation of bilateral series against India between 2009 and 2011. The broadcasting deal is one of the major sources of income for the PCB and, with no series against India scheduled until 2020, these could be testing times for the board as it may be hit by a financial crunch following a long-standing budget-deficit. In 2011-12, the deficit was nearly 700 million Pakistani rupees. The PCB’s Governing Board, in their emergency meeting at the National Cricket Academy, has decided to appoint the former ICC president Ehsan Mani as their advisor on their television deal.”We are yet to issue a tender for the broadcaster after finishing our five-year deal last month,” a PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo. “It requires a specific procedural time and systematic restructuring of the bidding process and finalising the deal. But we have an alternative, i.e. to go with a series-by-series deal – in case we need that for any of our upcoming home series – before going into a long-term deal with a broadcaster.”The interim setup of the PCB may also be affecting its chances of securing a long-term deal. The suspension of Zaka Ashraf as chairman led to a delay in the PCB budget this year and the process of renewing the broadcasting deal was also delayed as a result. The PCB’s functions were on hold for almost a month, until the appointment of interim chairman Najam Sethi. The Islamabad High Court has ordered Sethi to hold elections within 90 days but has not given a detailed order. Although the PCB refused to comment on its internal functioning, it has confirmed that the bidding process for a broadcaster is currently on hold, with various other issues taking precedence. It is likely the board may look to secure a six-year deal next year, once a more stable administrative setup is in place.

Jagdale and Shirke resign from BCCI posts

Two top BCCI officials – board secretary Sajnay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke – have resigned their posts following the widespread criticism of the board’s handling of the corruption issues in the IPL

The leadership crisis within the BCCI seems headed towards its endgame with two senior officials – secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke – resigning from their posts following widespread criticism of the board’s handling of the corruption issues in the IPL. Jagdale and Shirke are second and third in the board’s hierarchy and their resignations, while opening up an administrative vacuum, is seen as a message to the president, N Srinivasan, who has insisted on staying in his post in the face of expert and public opinion.Jagdale also said he would not serve on the three-man commission appointed to conduct the inquiry into Gurunath Meiyappan, India Cements, and the owners of Rajasthan Royals. “I had already requested the president not to keep me there. I had never wanted to be there,” he said.”Justice T Jayaram Chouta, one of the two High Court judges on the panel, said the commission would now not be able to function because one of its members had resigned.”I have resigned from the post of the secretary of the BCCI,” Jagdale, who took office in September 2011 when N Srinivasan became BCCI president, told . “I am deeply hurt with the recent developments in Indian cricket. Let some new faces come and take the responsibility.” Jagdale had played 53 first-class matches for MadhyaPradesh, and was a national selector too.”No, there was no pressure, nobody influenced me. I felt deeply hurt, nothing else, there is no [other] reason behind it,” Jagdale told CNN-IBN, when asked if Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association president Jyotiraditya Scindia – who was the first of the BCCI’s senior politicians to speak out – had influenced his decision. “I was hurt as a former cricketer, as an administrator, as a cricket lover, I hurt like any of the millions of cricket lovers in India.”Jagdale did not offer opinion on whether Srinivasan should step down as president. “This was my decision, I leave it for Mr Srinivasan, he has been in the game for a longer period than me,” he said. “He is capable of taking his own decisions.”Shirke had said on Thursday night that he was not happy with the way the BCCI had handled the issues of spot-fixing allegations against three Royals players and betting charges against Gurunath, a top Chennai Super Kings official and Srinivasan’s son-in-law. “Yes that’s true [I have resigned],” Shirke, who also began his term when Srinivasan became president, said. “I have spelt out my reason and don’t want to comment any more. I have already spoken to the media at length, therefore I have resigned.”There is a possibility that there will be more resignations on Saturday morning from the five BCCI vice-presidents, including that of Arun Jaitley from the north zone and Sudhir Dabir from central zone. Insiders say that Chitrak Mitra from the east has let it be known that he will not quit while the other two vice-presidents, Shivlal Yadav from south zone and Niranjan Shah from the west, remain undecided.ESPNcricinfo understands that senior BCCI officials had been in constant discussion with Srinivasan, asking him to step aside from his office as board president until the three-man commission completed its inquiry into his son-in-law Gurunath, the Super Kings owners India Cements, and the owners of Rajasthan Royals. Srinivasan, however, had paid no heed to their advice.Late on Friday, Srinivasan agreed to call for a working committee meeting next week to discuss the corruption issues plaguing the IPL. The date of the meeting is yet to be confirmed, but ESPNcricinfo understands it will be held over the next weekend.

South Africa look to seal series at tricky Kingsmead

The preview for the fourth ODI between South Africa and Pakistan in Durban

The Preview by Firdose Moonda20-Mar-2013Match facts March 21, Kingsmead
Start time 1000 local (0800GMT)Graeme Smith has shown uneasiness against Pakistan’s opening bowlers, something he’ll have to turn around quickly to keep his detractors at bay•Associated Press

Big Picture The series has reached its crossroad. Either it will be decided in Durban – in which case South Africa will seal a trophy and begin to change perceptions about the venue being a hoodoo ground – or Pakistan will further rubberstamp that theory and take a still-alive contest to Benoni on Sunday. After two one-sided games in Bloemfontein and Centurion, the series ignited at the Wanderers where a high-scoring match offered a glimpse into both teams’ strengths and weaknesses. Pakistan still have the ability to bounce back from the unlikeliest of situations, South Africa still get themselves into winning positions and freeze when that changes. In Johannesburg, they thawed just in time to stop the Shahid Afridi juggernaut but his innings will give Pakistan belief. They know that Kingsmead is must-win for them, but they also know that they could not have asked for a better venue to face that kind of challenge. Apart from a pitch that should suit them, Pakistan will have massive support in Durban, which may leave South Africa feeling up against it.The home team’s main focus is consistency and the only way for them to start building some of that will be to win the next two matches. Without Faf du Plessis, their middle order will be thoroughly tested as they aim for that.Pakistan also have injury worries, which will affect their bowling combinations. That said, at this late stage of a tour, bench strength is bound to be exposed and the unit that has the ability to use its best will deservedly come out on top.Form guide South Africa: WLWWL (most recent first)
Pakistan: LWLLWPlayers to watchEvery few months, Graeme Smith’s name comes up as a candidate for the chop in South Africa’s limited-overs teams and every time it happens, he responds with a decent score. It’s happened again, with his 116 against New Zealand forgotten in the shadows of the 30, 10 and 3 he has notched up in the series so far. What is more noticeable than a lack of runs is his increasing uneasiness against Pakistan’s opening bowlers. He has never been an attractive player and often wills his way to big scores, and the stage is set for that to happen again.By the same token, his opposite number, Nasir Jamshed, is also under pressure to produce. After back to back hundreds against India, Jamshed’s potential was obvious but he has not replicated that in South Africa. He looks confident and plays a few aggressive strokes but is often guilty of giving his wicket away. His often comical fielding has come under scrutiny as well and with calls for Kamran Akmal to open, he may realise the time has come to step up.Team newsFaf du Plessis has been ruled out of the series with a lower back problem which will present an opportunity to either David Miller, who was already in the squad or Quinton de Kock, who was brought in. It’s far likelier that Miller will play ahead of de Kock. Kyle Abbott may be called on to play at his home ground in place of either Rory Kleinveldt or Lonwabo Tsostobe. Morne Morkel, who still recovering from his hamstring strain, was spotted having a long stint in the nets on the match eve, so a return for him cannot be ruled out either.South Africa (probable) 1 Graeme Smith 2 Hashim Amla 3 Colin Ingram, 4 AB de Villiers (capt & wk), 5 David Miller/Quinton de Kock, 6 Farhaan Behardien, 7 Ryan McLaren 8 Robin Peterson 9 Dale Steyn, 10 and 11 Kyle Abbott/Rory Kleinveldt/Morne MorkelPakistan are waiting on Umar Gul and Mohammad Irfan’s availability and have drafted Sohail Tanvir into the squad as cover. Tanvir has been in good form with both bat and ball for the Lions franchise and so, even if either of the pair is fit, he may still be considered in place of Wahab Riaz. Kaman Akmal appears to have moved up the order and the batting line-up is likely to remain unchanged. Pressure on Younis Khan after a few poor matches means that Asad Shafiq could come back in.Pakistan (probable) 1 Nasir Jamshed, 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Kamran Akmal (wk), 4 Younis Khan/Asad Shafiq, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Umar Gul/Wahab Riaz/Sohail Tanvir, 9 Saeed Ajmal 10 Junaid Khan, 11 Mohammsd Irfan/Sohail TanvirPitch and conditionsMention Durban and two things come to mind: un-South African conditions and rain. At least only the former is expected to make an appearance in this match. The surface will be slower than any othervenue that has been used in the series so far and it is said to favour opposition more than it does the hosts. South Africa will mindful of changing that perception and the weather should play its part inallowing them to do that. A clear, sunny day is forecast for Durban with no precipitation.Stats and trivia Pakistan hold the record for the highest innings total at Kingsmead. Their 351 for 4 in the 2006-07 season included Shahid Afridi’s score of 77 off 35 balls and they beat South Africa by 141 runs The last time South Africa won two consecutive ODIs in a series was more than a year ago, when they beat New Zealand 3-0 in February-March 2012Quotes”When you miss key players in important games, it’s a loss but it tests your depth as a squad, which is important going into the Champions Trophy in England.”
“I truly believe we’re heading in the right direction, especially from the bowling side of things. The guys are coming up with very clear gameplans and they know exactly what they want to do.”
AB de Villiers is pleased with the progress South Africa have made

Vince ton smashes Essex

A magnificent century from James Vince carried Hampshire to a crushing nine wicket victory over Essex in the opening Yorkshire Bank 40 match of the new season at Chelmsford

A magnificent century from James Vince carried Hampshire to a crushing nine wicket victory over Essex in the opening Yorkshire Bank 40 match of the new season at Chelmsford.Vince smashed an unbeaten 129 from 93 deliveries and shared in an opening partnership of 156 in only 17 overs with Michael Carberry as the visitors surpassed the target with 10.2 overs to spare.Their blitz on the Essex bowlers saw them raise the 100 in a mere 9.2 overs with Reece Topley and Sajid Mahmood suffering most. Mahmood, making his first appearance for the county following his move from Lancashire, conceded 34 runs in his first two overs while Topley went for 26.Vince needed just 27 deliveries to record his half-century and a further 44 to move into three figures with the help of 15 fours and a six. By then, he had lost Carberry for 65 made off 51 balls and containing eight fours and a six. He departed when giving a return catch to Graham Napier but that proved Essex’s solitary success as Jimmy Adams, with an unbeaten 29, helped Vince to see them home. In all, Vince hit 17 fours and a six and was just two runs short of equaling his competition best.Hampshire’s triumph came after a late surge from Napier and Greg Smith had led Essex to what appeared a challenging total. They added 93 in 51 deliveries for the sixth wicket after coming together in the 31st over with the total on 143.Napier, fresh from his heroics in the Championship victory two days earlier when he scored an unbeaten 78, made 50 from 29 balls before he was caught on the boundary from the last ball of the innings. Napier’s effort contained two sixes and five fours while Smith made 43, which included a six and six fours from 33 deliveries until he was bowled by Chris Wood..Earlier Australian left-hander Bobby Quiney struck a fluent 71 from 87 balls with the help of six fours and a six. His effort ended when he was bowled by Hamza Riazuddin after sharing in half-century stands with fellow opener Tom Westley (34) and Mark Pettini. But there was no joy for Ravi Bopara who had hoped to celebrate his inclusion in England’s Champions Trophy squad. He was bowled attempting to attack left-arm spinner Danny Briggs, a dismissal that completed a miserable week for him with the bat. In the Championship match against Hampshire, he failed to reach double figures in either innings and in eight trips to the middle this season, he has only once topped fifty.
