Lionel Messi credited for 'fun' reunion with Luis Suarez & ex-Barcelona team-mates that shows 'how far MLS has come' as Don Garber makes prediction for Inter Miami's 2024 season

Lionel Messi has been credited with bringing “fun” transfers to MLS, with the Argentine being joined at Inter Miami by a number of ex-Barcelona stars.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner made his way to America in the summer of 2023. He was followed to Florida by former Camp Nou team-mates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. They have since been joined in the Sunshine State by veteran Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez.

MLS commissioner Don Garber considers those deals to be a good thing, telling of the progress being made in the U.S. game: “It's important to remind ourselves and everybody else that having arguably the best player of all time in our league says a lot about where MLS is, and how far it's come over the years. And I don't think Miami is stopping, right? Signing Luis Suárez and putting together a bunch of guys that Leo has played with for so many years, I think is fun. It's exciting. And I think we're going to see just more energy, and lots more attention in Year 2. But the league has been signing really big-name international players for many, many years, and we're going to continue to do that. But as importantly, focus as much as we can on not just the top of the roster and the players that will bring us attention around the world, but also young players both here in the U.S. and players from overseas. And I think probably for the first time, I think the story this year is about how some of the great young players, particularly from South America, are choosing MLS. You know, I [was] told a stat, 15 of the players in Olympic qualifying in South America are playing in MLS, and I think you're going to see more and more focus on our teams to sign young players and sign under-22 players. And then at the same time, sign guys like [Hugo] Lloris and [Emil] Forsberg and any other player that we think could round out sort of what kind of league we want to be.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

There have been calls for MLS to address current salary cap rules, allowing more marquee signings to be made, but Garber added on that long-running debate: “Every year we work to determine whether or not the roster rules we have are delivering what we need to deliver in order to grow our fan base, right? And I think Messi comes into the league and then all of a sudden there's this buzz that, 'OK, now maybe we're going to just dramatically change our roster rules.' Leo came in within our roster rules and there's no shortage of opportunity for other teams to do what Miami did, or to find whatever player makes sense for them in their local market. All that being said, we have evolved in sometimes really big ways and sometimes small ways, [but] our roster rules [change] every single year. And we will continue to look at that to ensure that we're managing our broad league-wide strategy to become more competitive in the regional and global landscape, but at the same time do it within practical and rational means.”

reports that Arsenal manager Arteta is keen on signing Neves from Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal in January and has requested the board to go all out for the player.

The Gunners are eyeing a replacement for midfielder Thomas Partey who is likely to depart the club in the next window and Arteta thinks that the Portuguese is the perfect alternative. They will though have to face competition from Newcastle United who see Neves as a replacement for Sandro Tonali, who is serving a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules.

Several European giants like Barcelona and Arsenal were interested in signing the Portuguese international in the summer transfer window but it was Al-Hilal who won the battle by paying a sum of €55m, which according to the other competitors seemed like a lot of money for a player who was heading into the final year of his contract with Wolves.

Neves eventually committed his future to the Saudi Arabian club by signing on a three-year-long deal.

The 26-year-old has become a key member of Jorge Jesus' squad since joining them in the summer. He has appeared in 17 matches for the team in all competitions and has scored two goals and provided an assist.

Notts secure Philander, Hilfenhaus

Nottinghamshire have secured two overseas signings for 2015 with Vernon Philander and Ben Hilfenhaus set for stints at Trent Bridge next season.

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Dec-2014Nottinghamshire have secured two overseas signings for 2015 with Vernon Philander and Ben Hilfenhaus set for stints at Trent Bridge next season.Philander, the South Africa seam bowler, will join the club in April and feature in six County Championship matches and three NatWest T20s before he resumes duty with South Africa. He has previously enjoyed spells at Kent, Middlesex and Somerset, for whom he took 23 wickets at 21.34 in 2012.Hilfenhaus will take over as overseas player from the NatWest T20 against Leicestershire on June 5. It will be the Australian seamer’s first taste of county cricket.”It is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit an overseas player of high quality to spend an entire season in county cricket so we’re very pleased to have two high quality bowlers sharing the spot,” Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell said.”We made the decision to recruit bowlers because we felt that we needed to add some experience to enable us to take 20 wickets in Championship matches more regularly. Ben and Vernon were keen to have stints in county cricket in 2015 and it’s pleasing that they have chosen to join us.”Hilfenhaus, 31 has not played for Australia since 2012 said he has always been keen for a spell in county cricket: “Nottinghamshire is the ideal club for me given their track record of competing for trophies and the proud history of Australians enjoying success there.”It’s hard to find time in the schedule to commit to a full season so sharing the overseas spot with Vernon is ideal for both of us. I’ve had some good discussions with Mick Newell and Ed Cowan and I’m looking forward to getting started at Trent Bridge.”Philander added: “I’ve got a lot of cricket to play in the lead-up to my time with Nottinghamshire but I know the job that I have to do and I’ll be well prepared for the county season. There is always responsibility to make a personal contribution and hopefully the results will follow and I can help Nottinghamshire make a good start to the season.”

No looseners for under-pressure Watson

There have been no easy starts for Shane Watson in this World Cup. In his only innings of the tournament, he was out for a first-ball duck when he edged Stuart Broad behind at the MCG

Brydon Coverdale in Auckland25-Feb-2015There have been no easy starts for Shane Watson in this World Cup. In his only innings of the tournament, he was out for a first-ball duck when he edged Stuart Broad behind at the MCG. In Auckland on Wednesday he faced the media for the first time in the World Cup, and the opening question was no Dorothy Dixer.”Do you concede that Saturday is crunch time for you to make runs to keep your place?””Geez that’s a hard-hitting question to start off with,” Watson replied after a long pause. “It’s crunch time for me to score runs in general. I didn’t score runs in the first game which was very disappointing – to not get through that first ball.”I think it’s important for me to score runs anytime. It’s up to the selectors in the end, whether they see fit for me to play. But I’m doing everything I possibly can. I’ve been in and around a number of World Cup campaigns. I know what to expect and I know it doesn’t always go exactly to plan as well.”It has been a challenging summer for Watson, particularly in the Test arena – he averaged 29.75 in the series against India. One-day cricket has generally been a more bankable format for him, but in the past two years he has averaged 31.17 in ODIs. An 82 against South Africa in Sydney in November was encouraging, but a hamstring niggle in this year’s tri-series came at a bad time.Australia’s selectors have already had to make a hard decision on who to axe for the returning captain Michael Clarke, with George Bailey likely to sit out against New Zealand at Eden Park on Saturday. But another decision will have to be made whenever James Faulkner comes back from his side strain.Faulkner had been bowling in the nets of a short run-up but came off his full run for a few overs in Auckland on Wednesday, and while it might be a stretch to imagine him returning for this game, he might not be far away. When fit, Faulkner is a certain starter given his finishing ability with the bat and use as a frontline bowler, and Mitchell Marsh’s five-wicket haul against England at the MCG has added to the selection squeeze. The likelihood is that Watson’s experience, and the desire to retain a stable top three, will help him retain his place. But equally if Marsh continues to display his improvement, it might not be a straightforward decision for Rod Marsh and his selection panel.”I do feel it’s coming along well, I just haven’t scored runs,” Watson said. “I didn’t get through the first ball in the first game against England and unfortunately didn’t get a chance to play against Bangladesh. I actually feel like I’m hitting the ball well. I just need to give myself a chance to get in some innings and get things rolling.”I think we have got a lot of match-winners right throughout our batting order but the top three is very important to being able to set up our whole innings, especially with two white balls as well we need to make sure that we give ourselves a chance to be able have a few wickets through that middle period and the back end.”Australia had another lengthy training session on the Eden Park outer oval on Wednesday as they aim to regain the touch they displayed against England on the first day of the tournament. Their wash-out against Bangladesh in Brisbane means that Australia will enter this weekend’s game with limited match time, compared to New Zealand, who have won three from three.”It’s disappointing that we haven’t played a game in two weeks,” Watson said. “It would have been nice to play and continue our roll on after the game against England but I am not sure it is a disadvantage … one positive is going to the game guys are going to be very fresh after not playing for a bit.”The Australians will also need to adjust from the vast outfield at the MCG to the unusually short straight boundaries at Eden Park, which is largely used as a rugby ground. It might help batsmen like Watson loft the ball down the ground for six, but protecting the boundaries from the likes of Brendon McCullum when in the field could be a major challenge.”It’s different dimensions for a cricket ground,” Watson said. “I remember last time there was a couple of really small pockets, very short pockets, but also a couple of big pockets as well. It’s not your standard cricket ground. And the crowd definitely feels right on top of you as well, with a lot of New Zealanders not really enjoying our company out there.”

Mazzarri sacked by NapoliCalzona appointed interim successorPresident explains reasoningWHAT HAPPENED?

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis explained that the decision to let Mazzarri go, having only re-hired the 62-year-old in November, was motivated by the team winning just four of his 12 Serie A games in charge and tumbling to ninth in the table.

AdvertisementWHAT DE LAURENTIIS SAID

De Laurentiis told of Sky Sport Italia: "Walter Mazzarri is a friend of the De Laurentiis family and of Napoli. It is a painful farewell because he was extremely available in a moment of difficulty, but we must also consider that something more must be given to the Napoli fans. Now let's try with Calzona who has worked with [Maurizio] Sarri and [Luciano] Spalletti and knows 80% of the players. Let's give him help without putting obstacles in his way because we know that it will be difficult to prepare for a match against Barcelona who are always Barcelona. Tomorrow morning at 8:30am, Calzona will be here with his staff, then we will go to Castel Volturno where I will introduce him to the boys. [Marek] Hamsik was very intrigued to work for the team he loves and which has given him so much satisfaction."

Calzona was previously on the Napoli backroom team under both Luciano Spalletti (2021-2022) and Maurizio Sarri (2015-2018) and will combine being interim head coach with his existing role in charge of Slovakia's national team.

Juventus leave it late against Verona as USMNT stars Weston McKennie and Tim Weah start for Bianconeri in last-gasp win

U.S. men's national team stars Tim Weah and Weston McKennie started for Juventus as they stole a result in stoppage-time against Verona

McKennie and Weah startedJuve win 1-0 in stoppage timeAllegri's tactics holding them back

Andrea Cambiaso's 97th minute winner for Juventus stole the show as the Turin side miraculously secured victory at the Allianz Stadium after an incredibly boring 96 minutes of soccer. It may sound harsh because they still earned the result, but Juventus played incredibly poorly against the 16th placed side in Serie A. They need more from their attack and more from their boss, Massimiliano Allegri.

Getty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

Bianconeri forward Moise Kean had not one, but two goals called back in the match. First up, just 12 minutes in, Kean thought he fired home but an offside Dusan Vlahovic flicked it on, seeing it called back. Then, eight minutes into the second half, Kean headed home a McKennie cross only to see it called back for a foul he himself committed.

Cambiaso's brilliant winner in stoppage-time saw him swarmed by teammates after Arkadiusz Milik's header shattered the woodwork, before the Italian put it into the back of the net.

The 1-0 scoreline was a replication of their form of late, with this being their fifth-straight clean sheet, but overall, a lack of excitement and speed overtook the match. It was slow, yet composed in the middle of the pitch, however, neither team looked like they had any interest in pushing the ball into the opposition's box.

It was a brilliant opportunity for McKennie and Weah to both start, but it's starting to feel like Massimiliano Allegri's choice of formation and tactics is going to hinder Juventus's chance to excel against the top sides in Serie A and Europe.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

This was the third-straight match where Weah and McKennie started alongside each other for Juventus, and it's beyond evident that their chemistry from playing on the national team has transferred over to their form for the Bianconeri. However, it just feels like Juve are hokding themselves back with five defenders and three midfielders. There isn't enough in their attack, and in a match like this, seeing Weah in a higher attacking role next to Vlahovic may have been a better shout.

For the Turin side as a whole, they no doubt expect more from themselves in a match like this. Verona never really threatened Juve, but they themselves never got going as a whole, either. However, good teams find results, even in stoppage-time, with seconds to spare.

GettyUSMNT IMPACT

It's a big positive for the USMNT to have both Weah and McKennie starting for Juventus, especially on the same side of the pitch. Despite Weah's early exit, he performed well, and for Wes – he continues to impress in that central midfield role under Allegri.

All you can ask and hope for is that they both continue to get minutes on a consistent basis if you're Gregg Berhalter. Juve boss Allegri is rather stubborn when it comes to adjusting to modern-day tactics, so his side's formation is set in stone. Weah in a more attacking role would be preferred, but at this point in time, you cannot be picky.

Captain Ingram wants 'more unified' Warriors

Sharpening the Warriors’ “competitive edge” is what Colin Ingram has identified as his main task when he takes over the captaincy full-time from Thursday

Firdose Moonda23-Sep-2014Sharpening the Warriors’ “competitive edge” is what Colin Ingram has identified as his main task when he takes over the captaincy full-time from Thursday. The franchise finished in the bottom half of the table in all three formats last summer and last won a trophy in 2009-10, which has fixed Ingram’s focus on leading a resurgence this season.”We’ve been honest about it and we have to do a revamp because the trophy cabinet is not exactly full and hasn’t been for a while,” Ingram told ESPNcricinfo. “We tend to play good cricket in small patches and this season we need to improve. You’re going to see a much more unified Warriors team with a lot more direction this summer.”The Warriors won just two out of 10 first-class matches last summer, three out 10 one-day games and only four of their 10 Twenty20 clashes to meander through a mediocre 2013-14. They struggled to bowl teams out, were hit by injuries to former captain Davy Jacobs and seamer Rusty Theron and were over-reliant on the experience of Ashwell Prince in the batting line-up.Jacobs has been relieved of the leadership, Theron is fully fit and Prince has retired, which leaves the onus on the likes of David White, Colin Ackermann, Solo Nqweni and Thandolwethu Mnyaka to step up. “We’ve got quite a new bunch of players and that suits my captaincy style,” Ingram said. “We don’t have a lot of superstars and even though its nice to have big names, I believe everybody must contribute and this will be a good test to see how they respond to that.”Of the Warriors squad, only Wayne Parnell is nationally contracted and with the amount of ODI cricket South Africa will play in the lead-up to the World Cup, he is unlikely to feature much for the Warriors. Instead, the franchise will look to produce its own internationals, much like the Dolphins have done over the past two seasons with both Kyle Abbott and Mthokozisi Shezi receiving South African call-ups.The candidates for higher honours at the Warriors include offspinner Simon Harmer, who finished last season second on the list of wicket-takers behind Dane Piedt, opening batsman David White and Ingram himself, who last played for South Africa in November 2013. Ingram was the first South African to score a century on ODI debut but could not sustain his strong start. He spent significant chunks of time out of the XI and when he was used, it was often out of position. He is a regular No.4 but when he last played for South Africa he was used as an opener. His last four innings produced scores of 0, 0, 0 and 4 before he was dropped, which seemed the inevitable consequence of not having a defined role. “Those last few games were disappointing for me because I didn’t perform, not so much because I was moving around the order but because I wasn’t doing well,” Ingram said.Any doubt in his own ability to score runs would have faded in the 10 months since then. Batting in his usual position, Ingram scored 427 runs at 61.00 including century and three fifties in seven matches in the first-class competition last season and 395 runs at 65.83 including four fifties in the one-day cup. He was the Warriors’ most successful fifty-over batsmen in that campaign. Over the winter, he spent time at Somerset where he played seven Royal London One-Day Cup games and was the county’s third-highest run-scorer overall with 298 runs at 42.57.But does he think those numbers are enough to earn him a recall to a South African squad that is starting to look too settled to break into? “I always think I will give myself a chance if I have a good season but my focus in on the Warriors and on doing well for them,” he said. “As a captain, I’ve been preaching that we need to up our game so I have to be the first to do it. I’m looking forward to getting going and getting my hands dirty.”As one of the four franchises in South Africa not involved in the Champions League T20, the Warriors season starts with two first-class matches before the one-day cup, followed by three weeks of 50-over cricket and a just over a month of T20. The clearly defined blocs for each format can be unsettling for some but Ingram thinks it can work to the Warriors’ advantage.”It will be good for us because we can focus for a couple of games at a time on each format. Because we’ve done well over small periods of time, it may end up suiting us and help us get that competitive edge back,” he said. The people of the Eastern Cape will hope he is right.

O'Brien steers Foxes to consecutive wins

ScorecardKevin O’Brien saw Leicestershire home with an unbeaten innings•Getty ImagesLeicestershire made it consecutive wins in the NatWest T20 North Division as Durham’s batsmen struggled to come to terms with a well-grassed but relatively slow pitch at Grace Road.Durham skipper Mark Stoneman’s decision to bat first after winning the toss looked like it might pay off when the first over, bowled by part-time offspinner Neil Pinner, yielded 15 runs. But Foxes captain Mark Cosgrove turned to his seamers, and in the third over Stoneman, looking to pull a short delivery from Rob Taylor, bottom edged the ball into his stumps.Calum MacLeod was becoming increasingly frustrated when he stepped across his stumps and attempted to scoop a Kevin O’Brien delivery over the wicketkeeper’s head, and succeeded only in edging a simple catch to Ned Eckersley at point.Phil Mustard pulled and square drove boundaries off O’Brien in the 11th over, but in the 12th Paul Collingwood tried to lift the offspin of Jigar Naik over long-off, and was well held by Grant Elliott. The New Zealander then dropped a fierce chance off Mustard, on 41, but the left-hander added only four more runs to his score when he was held by Rob Taylor at long off from the bowling of O’Brien.John Hastings did his best to increase the scoring rate, hitting three beautifully timed boundaries in going to 21 off 13 balls, and together with Gordon Muchall, who made 31 off 27 balls, added 37 for the sixth wicket.A target of just over six an over always looked likely to be inadequate, however, and though Hastings bowled well at Cosgrove when Leicestershire began their innings, youngster Paul Coughlin was lofted high over long-on and into the player’s car park by the Australian left-hander.Coughlin got his revenge, catching Cosgrove at deep-extra cover off Usman Arshad, and Scott Borthwick pinned Eckersley leg before wicket so that after ten overs the Foxes were only just ahead of the required rate.Had Borthwick won a stumping decision when Elliott was only 3, matters might have become really interesting, but after several replays, third umpire Tim Robinson decided there was sufficient doubt to reprieve the New Zealander. Salt was rubbed into the wound when Borthwick’s next over went for 20, and offspinner Ryan Pringle received similar treatment as Leicestershire cantered home with 27 balls to spare.”I don’t think the pitch was too bad at all, I think we bowled pretty well on it, and then the batsmen took us home,” Cosgrove said. “It’s good to back up on beating Derbyshire in our last match, and hopefully we can take the form into our game at Worcester on Friday night.”
