Guardiola should axe Gabriel Jesus

Juventus have been showing a lot of interest in Manchester City star Gabriel Jesus recently, and Pep Guardiola should cash in on him this summer, as he has proven himself to be nowhere near consistent enough during his time at the Etihad.

What’s the word?

According to Italian news outlet TuttoSport, the Brazil international is at the top of Juventus’ centre-forward wishlist this summer, as they seek a long-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Following the departure of the legendary Sergio Aguero, Jesus is the only senior striker at the club, although Liam Delap is expected to be a part of Guardiola’s squad next season after a phenomenal season with the ’23s, which suggests that they would be very short on options if he were allowed to join Massimiliano Allegri’s side.

However, selling the 24-year-old forward could help to fund a move for the likes of Harry Kane or Erling Haaland this summer, as he is currently valued at £54m by Transfermarkt.

Should Man City sell Jesus?

Since signing for Man City in 2016, the former Palmeiras man has contributed a fairly impressive 82 goals and 34 assists in 195 appearances.

However, just 26 of those have been game-winning goals, which suggests that he often helps himself to a brace or a hattrick when City are already comfortable playing against weaker opposition, rather than him making the difference in big games.

His best goalscoring season in the Premier League saw him score just 14 goals, whereas last season saw him manage just nine goals in 29 top-flight appearances, despite Guardiola’s side running away with the title.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

The Spanish manager is a big fan of him, however, dubbing him City’s “unsung hero” last season because of his work rate in attack, yet he still wasn’t trusted to start in big games that often, with Guardiola often deploying the likes of Kevin De Bruyne or Phil Foden as a false nine instead of using a striker.

The Brazilian forward was guilty on a number of occasions of missing big chances and has perhaps shown that he is not clinical enough to be trusted as the main striker in City’s side next season, and whilst he has featured on the wing on occasion, he is behind all of Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva in the pecking order.

Therefore, if City do receive an official offer for Jesus this summer they should definitely consider taking it, as he isn’t consistent enough in front of goal to be their main striking option for the future, and the money from his sale could help Guardiola bring in a world-class forward.

Maher warns of Sri Lankan danger

SYDNEY, Dec 15 AAP – Australia A centurion Jimmy Maher has urged Ricky Ponting’s senior side to remember Sri Lanka remain a threat despite the tourists’ heavy defeat at the Gabba last night.

Alex Lowe15-Dec-2002SYDNEY, Dec 15 AAP – Australia A centurion Jimmy Maher has urged Ricky Ponting’s senior side to remember Sri Lanka remain a threat despite the tourists’ heavy defeat at the Gabba last night.Maher, who has enjoyed a prolific season against the touring teams, added a 106 to the twin double-centuries he scored against England as Australia A racked up 8-312.Sri Lanka’s reply stuttered early and died as Sanath Jayasuriya’s side lost its opening tour match by 102 runs. But fewer than three months ago, it was Australia that was on the receiving end, slumping to a seven wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy. And Maher has warned they remain a threat, particularly in the latter stages of the triangular tournament – that also involves England – when off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is expected to return from injury.”They will be a threat. On wickets like Adelaide and Sydney that turn a bit more, and certainly in Melbourne, I think they can be very competitive,” he said.”When Murali comes back in their side, (Aravinda) De Silva, Chaminda Vaas – you’ve got to remember the last time we played them in the Premadasa Stadium in Sri Lanka they comprehensively beat us.”They are a good cricket side and you never underestimate a Sri Lankan one-day side, with the likes of (Sanath) Jayasuriya, (Marvan) Atapattu and (Romesh) Kaluwitharana – they are all exciting players, hit the ball very hard and to all parts of the ground.”If they get away to a good start in a couple of games it’ll be very tough.”Complacency is not something Australia have been guilty of in the past and despite predictions of another unbeaten summer, Maher insists ponting will not allow any let-up in intensity.”You can never walk out and think it’s all going to happen. Obviously Australia are a fantastic unit, playing very good cricket, but on their day both these sides (Sri Lanka and England) could cause some problems.”I don’t think its going to be a walkover like everyone says. Sri Lanka have generally been a very good one-day outfit”.

Hughes retained, Katich in doubt for Hobart

Simon Katich remains in doubt for the Hobart Test against Pakistan with an elbow injury, forcing the selectors to again name Phillip Hughes as a backup opener

Cricinfo staff07-Jan-2010Simon Katich remains in doubt for the Hobart Test against Pakistan with an elbow injury, forcing the selectors to again name Phillip Hughes as a backup opener. Australia named an unchanged 13-man squad for the final Test of the home summer, giving Marcus North a reprieve despite a string of low scores. The remarkable series-winning victory at the SCG discouraged the selectors from making any alterations, allowing North another opportunity to turn around his form after scores of 1, 8, 10 and 2 in his past two Tests. The main query surrounds Katich, who missed the Sydney Test due to his elbow problem.Hughes did not fully grab his chance back in the Test side, with a first-innings duck and 37 in the second innings. The likelihood of Hughes playing at Bellerive, where the Test starts next Thursday, depends on how Katich performs when he bats in the nets in Hobart early next week.”Simon has been having regular treatment on his arm injury since being ruled out of the Sydney Test and will travel to Hobart with the squad where he will continue his rehabilitation,” Australia’s physio Alex Kountouris said. “A decision on his availability will be made closer to the start of the Test in Hobart after he’s had an opportunity to bat in the nets to test his injury.”Katich was Australia’s leading Test run scorer in 2009, with 1111 runs at 48.30, and he is averaging 57.42 in Tests this home summer. One of the SCG heroes, Peter Siddle, was confident Katich could shake the injury in time.”He’s come in a few times in the last couple of days to get some treatment and see Alex and work with him,” Siddle said. “I haven’t spoken to him too much about it but I’d be pretty confident. He’s a strong fella and he’s very wiling to work hard to get back out there. We’ve still got a fair bit of time before day one.”Squad Shane Watson, Simon Katich, Phillip Hughes, Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke, Marcus North, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Peter Siddle, Clint McKay, Doug Bollinger.

Leicester City linked to Mouctar Diakhaby

Leicester City could secure their ideal heir to Wes Morgan this summer in the shape of Valencia defender Mouctar Diakhaby.

What’s the story?

The former Foxes captain retired after the 2020/21 campaign, while Christian Fuchs also departed following a five-year spell at the King Power Stadium, leaving a sizeable hole in the club’s backline.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Diakhaby is being lined up as a potential replacement for the duo, with the 24-year-old said to be “very motivated” to join Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Rodgers needs him

If Leicester are to secure the £9m-rated monster’s services, then they’ll have to see off competition from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United.

The report claims that the guarantee of first-team football at St. James’ Park is an appealing prospect to Diakhaby, although the Frenchman is also keen to work under Rodgers due to his reputation of developing young talent.

Both sides are said to have submitted requests for the centre-back, although no solid offers have been made as of yet.

Diakhaby has been placed on the transfer list at the Mestalla and is now said to be surplus to requirements by the Spanish outlet after making 27 appearances in all competitions last season.

His arrival at the current FA Cup holders would be much welcomed by Rodgers as the Northern Irish tactician aims to bolster his first-team squad.

Qualification for next term’s Europa League means Leicester will need several additions in the transfer window in order to fight on multiple fronts.

With Morgan and Fuchs departing, a new centre-back and full-back are thought to be high up on Rodgers’ wishlist and, Diakhaby could be a viable option.

Valencia have been experiencing financial difficulties over the last 12 months or so and were forced to sell several of their top performing players last summer, meaning they could be a good place to pick up a bargain over the coming months.

Diakhaby natural size and pace made him an ideal Premier League defender, while his composure and ability with the ball at his feet ensure slotting into Leicester’s system should pose few problems.

Across 24 La Liga starts, he averaged a 85% pass success rate, won 1.8 aerials and 3.8 clearances per game, which would reinforce his suitability for the English top-flight and particularly, at the King Power.

He could be the dream replacement for the retiring Morgan this summer.

As a result, director of football Jon Rudkin must sanction a swoop for the former Lyon man as Rodgers looks to take his charges one step further in 2021/22.

Report on Brian Lara handed in

Barbadian Qyeen’s counsel Elliott Mottley has submitted his report to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) surrounding the matter into whether star batsman Brian Lara took bribes

20-Aug-2002Barbadian Qyeen’s counsel Elliott Mottley has submitted his report to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) surrounding the matter into whether star batsman Brian Lara took bribes.Mottley conducted the investigation for the WICB after an Indian bookmaker accused Lara of taking$40 000 for playing badly. Lara denies the allegations, which came in a separate report into corruption by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation, published in November 2000.President of the WICB, Wes Hall, has reportedly received the report and is said to be studying it and will reveal his findings in the future."I’m currently reading the report, which is quite extensive, and then I shall be making a statement," Hall said. It is a lovely ambience and I love the trees ringing the ground. I only live an hour or so down the road so it just seemed the logical thing to do. Nobody had to twist my arm.”When I was in politics I always set aside some time to watch cricket but it was mainly high days and holidays. Now, although I am still busy, I have a little more time to watch some county cricket which I thoroughly enjoy. I look forward to watching and enjoying the cricket of both Surrey and Leicestershire next season.”

Pundit says Harrison Reed has right attributes to play for Leeds

Dean Windass believes that Harrison Reed has the right attributes to become a Leeds player.

The midfielder has just been relegated by Fulham but was one of their few outstanding performers last season and will no doubt want to continue playing in the top-flight.

According to the Daily Mail, Marcelo Bielsa has been impressed with the 26-year-old, and is interested in signing him this summer as Leeds look to build on their ninth-place finish.

Reed, described as ‘tireless’ and a ‘terrier’ by The Times, came through the ranks at Southampton but was never given a fair first-team crack at St Mary’s and spent time on loan with Norwich, Blackburn, and Fulham before joining the latter permanently 12 months ago.

He appeared 31 times in the Premier League for Fulham last season, missing all but two of those through injury, chipping in with two assists as the Londoners continued their unwanted pattern of being either relegated or promoted in each of the last four seasons.

Asked whether he’d be a good fit for Leeds, Windass exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“You can see that, he’s young as well. I think he’s an athlete and that’s what you’ve got to be when you play for Leeds.

“Reed is a good player, from Fulham, who’ve been relegated, and every player wants to play in the Premier League, so that would be a good fit.”

Jesus could now be tempted to join Spurs

According to a report by the Sun, the promise of first team football ‘could be enough’ to convince Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus to make the switch to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The Lowdown: Spurs and Jesus…

Recently, Spurs have been touted with interest in the Brazilian as part of a possible swap deal for star striker Harry Kane – who is now believed to want out of north London this summer (Sky Sports).

The coronavirus pandemic ensures that clubs do not have mounds of money to spend when it comes to blockbuster transfers and part-exchange deals may be seen as a good alternative.

Reports suggest chairman Daniel Levy could demand up to £200 million for Kane with City apparently interested in using makeweights to bring his asking price down.

The Latest: Jesus could be convinced by Tottenham move

Sharing the latest on Tottenham and Jesus, the Sun believe that the 24-year-old joining Spurs as part of a Kane swap deal is far more likely than Raheem Sterling, who is now being touted with another potential switch to Arsenal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed Jesus’ £90,000-per-week wages won’t be a problem for the Lilywhites, even if they are increased, and the promise of first team football could convince him to join Spurs this summer.

He bagged nine goals and four assists in 22 Premier League starts for the Premier League champions over 2020/2021 (WhoScored), and despite the departure of club legend Sergio Aguero, Jesus is still not seen as the man to lead City’s forward line.

The Verdict: Do it Levy…

Lauded as an ‘incredible fighter’ by his manager, Pep Guardiola, Jesus is revered at the Sky Blues for his work off the ball and other aspects of his game than goalscoring acumen – including a tireless work rate (mancity.com).

He is prolific at finding the net too, however, having scored 103 career goals in total across his spells at both City and Palmeiras.

Valued at around £54 million by Transfermarkt, Levy could feasibly bypass a fee entirely if he was included in a swap deal for Kane.

The Englishman would undoubtedly be a huge loss for the club, but Jesus is arguably a capable alternative if plenty of cash comes Spurs’ way as part of the deal as well.

Liverpool fans excited after Neuhaus update

A number of Liverpool supporters are hugely excited after an update was provided on the Reds’ quest to sign Florian Neuhaus this summer.

Jurgen Klopp will be on the lookout for new signings in the coming weeks, as he aims to perfect his squad heading into next season.

Liverpool no longer have the reliable Gini Wijnaldum to call upon, so it may be that a replacement comes in during the summer transfer window.

One player who has has been linked with the Reds in the past is Borussia Monchengladbach star Neuhaus, who is currently on Euro 2020 duty with Germany.

A fresh update has now been provided, with journalist Florian Plettenburg taking to Twitter to claim that Klopp ‘wants’ to sign the 24-year-old, with talks taking place in recent days.

David Lynch has also backed the reports of Klopp’s interest in the player.

Joao Carvalho transfer update emerges

Chris Hughton will make a decision over Joao Carvalho’s Nottingham Forest future this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a recent claim made by Sarah Clapson, with the Nottingham Post journalist reporting that the Forest midfielder will have a lot of work to do in order to convince Hughton that he should be kept at The City Ground this summer.

However, Clapson goes on to state that the 62-year-old will take a look at the attacking midfielder in pre-season, if UD Almeria, where the 24-year-old has spent the season on loan, do not take up their option to buy the £3.6m-rated man.

The journalist said: “If Almeria don’t take up the option to buy him, Chris Hughton will have a look at him in pre-season. Trying to find other moves for him, in the current climate, could well be difficult. I still think he’d have a lot to do to really convince Chris Hughton.

“On his day, he can be brilliant, but he lacks consistency. He can be hit and miss, and he does go missing in games. In the Championship, particularly if you’re pushing for promotion, you can’t afford that. You need somebody who’s going to be on it the majority of the time.

“With the way the manager plays, he also wants the team to be really defensively solid. Even as an attacker, you need to help out defensively. That’s not one of Carvalho’s strengths – it wasn’t while he was at Forest and it hasn’t been while he’s been on loan at Almeria. He’d have to do a lot to convince Hughton he can do that job.

“He faces a big pre-season if nothing happens for him before then.”

Fans will be divided

Having moved to Nottingham Forest from Benfica in what was a club record £13.2m deal back in the summer of 2018, it would be a fair claim to make that Carvalho has not quite lived up to his price tag so far in his career with the Garibaldi.

Over his total of 67 appearances for the club, the former Portugal U21 international has scored six goals and registered nine assists.

The £15k-per-week 24-year-old has also failed to impress over his 32 LaLiga 2 fixtures for Almeria this season, scoring no goals, providing three assists and missing three big chances, as well as taking an average of 0.8 shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the midfielder average a SofaScore match rating of 6.76, ranking him as Rubi’s 16th-best performer in the Spanish second division – with Almeria’s campaign not over just yet, as they face Girona in the semi-final of the LaLiga 2 play-offs.

As such, with Carvalho having not pulled up any trees since joining Forest three years ago, either for the Reds or while on loan, it would appear unlikely that many of the Forest fanbase would be willing to welcome the 24-year-old back to their first team this summer.

Having said that, considering how much money the club paid for attacking midfielder, and how much promise he appeared to have before joining up with Forest, perhaps some factions of The City Ground faithful would like to see Hughton give the Portuguese man a chance in the starting XI next season.

Either way, the future of Carvhalo at Forest appears to be extremely uncertain at present, and only time will tell which way Hughton eventually leans regarding the midfielder this summer.
