Spurs eye de Ligt

According to print edition of the Sunday Mirror (via Fichajes.net), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus.

The Lowdown: Spurs’ defensive issues

During the summer transfer window, Spurs spent big at the back as they brought in Cristian Romero from Atalanta – the Argentina international set them back around £42m (Sky Sports).

So far, he has not had the impact Nuno Espirito Santo will have hoped for – albeit due to circumstances mostly out of his control – so perhaps it would be no surprise to see the Lilywhites dip back into the market to find him a suitable partner in the heart of defence.

The Latest: Spurs eye de Ligt

After conceding three times in each of their last three league fixtures, it seems Tottenham are interested in signing de Ligt from Juve.

Fabio Paratici of course has plenty of connections in Turin so there is already a route in for negotiations there, but the report does mention securing a deal could be difficult given Chelsea are reportedly prepared to offer more than €100m (£85.5m).

The Verdict: Expensive

The 6 foot 2 De Ligt has been one of European football’s most promising wonderkids after breaking onto the scene at Ajax but, while his move to Juventus has not been a disaster, he has not enjoyed the success many may have anticipated.

He failed to reach 30 Serie A appearances in either of his previous two campaigns at the club (Transfermarkt) and was part of a side that was unable to win the league title last term after prevailing nine times in a row before that.

Still, he is only 22 and is clearly a centre-back with plenty of a talent, once hailed as more important than Cristiano Ronaldo for the Old Lady by Juve legend Sergio Brio, while super agent Mino Raiola claims de Ligt is ‘unstoppable’ in full flow.

The interest from Chelsea is a major obstacle – the Blues are the champions of Europe and are not afraid to splash the cash – but this could be a worthwhile long-term investment for Paratici and Daniel Levy if they can convince the youngster to ignore their London rivals.

Paratici and Spurs set for Vlahovic swoop

According to Calciomercato.it, Tottenham Hotspur managing director Fabio Paratici is already set for a 2022 swoop as he eyes Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: Spurs in summer chase…

As per numerous reports, Tottenham were heavily linked with a move for Vlahovic during the summer with suggestions that talks were held and a bid was made.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Serbian, however, elected to remain in Serie A and there are rumours of him potentially putting pen to paper on a new deal with La Viola.

Regardless, Calciomercato.it believe Spurs certainly are not done with the 21-year-old just yet.

The Latest: Paratici certain for 2022 Vlahovic move…

As per their sources, Paratici and Spurs ‘will certainly return’ with a swoop for the striker alongside La Liga giants Atletico Madrid – with Juventus also eyeing a move.

However, if the Lilywhites wish to land him, they may have to pay big money as Fiorentina are believed to value him at ‘no less’ than €70-€80 million (£60m-£70m).

Indeed, the Italian news website list Vlahovic as one of the Serie A big names who could leave at the end of this season.

The Verdict: A must…

The 6 foot 3 forward would undoubtedly provide Tottenham and Nuno with some much-needed steel in the forward areas and a back up or alternative to Harry Kane.

Lauded as a ‘really exciting’ player by Serie A expert Conor Clancy, speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Vlahovic also racked up an incredible 21 goals and two assists in 37 top flight outings last term (Transfermarkt).

Financially, this move is a tough ask, but it would certainly be a statement of intent by Paratici.

QPR fans blast Dieng vs Preston

Flocking to Twitter, many Queen’s Park Rangers fans have voiced their discontent with the “poor” performance of goalkeeper Seny Dieng as their side narrowly came back to beat Preston North End 3-2 on Saturday.

Mark Warburton’s men are currently sitting among the Championship high-flyers in sixth place after a solid start to the campaign and can now regroup amid the international break.

The Rs now face a long wait for their next encounter with arch-rivals Fulham – a match made even more interesting by their similar starts to 2021/22.

QPR managed to nick all three points against their Lancashire visitors on Saturday but it was by no means a smooth ride, with Lyndon Dykes’ opening goal then cancelled out by PNE’s Joshua Earl and Emil Riis.

At 2-1 down with 20 minutes remaining, Warburton’s side orchestrated a dramatic comeback, with Jimmy Dunne and Illias Chair scoring in quick succession.

After a scrappy but entertaining win, however, many supporters were left unimpressed with the performance of Dieng, who was among the lowest-rated QPR players on SofaScore.

He conceded two goals on the day and it appears fans are growing tired with his recent performances, with memories of his howler against West Brom still all too fresh.

Check out some of the fans’ verdicts on the 26-year-old below.

McGrath defies odds to play in IPL

Glenn McGrath is in his 40th year. He is a man raising two children and, with a little help from his friends, running a major charity organisation founded by his wife, Jane, who passed away last year after a long battle with cancer.Clearly, McGrath is a man with much on his plate and more on his mind. And yet, in the coming weeks, he will add to his many commitments by pushing his frame through five gruelling weeks of competition with the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL. It is, by any estimate, a massive ask, and even more so when it is considered McGrath has not sent down a delivery in international cricket since the 2007 World Cup final. With his day-to-day activities largely focussed on a non-profit organisation, the opportunity to earn for his family – his auction price was $US350,000 – serves as a major motivation for McGrath as he enters his second IPL season. But this is no charity case. Last year, while contending with much heartache at home, the Australian paceman earned his pay cheque by emerging as the most economical (6.61) and durable (14 games) of Delhi’s bowlers. McGrath believes more is to come this time around.”I struggled a bit last year, but that was more about Jane and how the situation was back home,” McGrath told Cricinfo. “That won’t be a concern this time. Mum may bring the kids over for the middle period, depending on the schedule. My whole focus will be a lot different when I’m there, which I think will all be positive. Last time I think I did reasonably well considering I hadn’t played for 12 months. I have no doubts it will be similar this time, but my mindset will be different.”There is a lot of incentive going over there with the money they’re offering. Cricket is not something that I have a great desire to get back and play at the moment. I’m very happy being retired and with everything that I achieved in my life. In saying that, as soon as I got on the field in India (in 2008), I couldn’t help being competitive. My natural instincts came out and I was away. That won’t be an issue.”Last year I did a heap of fitness work leading into it, and when I bowled in the nets for half a session I felt like I hadn’t ever been away from the game. When I played that Twenty20 match earlier on in the year for New South Wales, and I hadn’t done any work leading into it, it felt like I had never bowled before in my life. So basically if I’m fit my bowling will come back really quickly, and if I’m not fit I’m useless.”McGrath will arrive in Delhi the coming days for the Daredevils’ week-long training camp before departing with the squad for South Africa on April 7. It is, he says, a time of great excitement, as cricket taps ever deeper into the rich resource that is Twenty20 cricket. But there is cause for concern, too. While McGrath and his metronomic action are unburdened by international commitments these days, the same cannot be said of the IPL’s other major drawcards. Already, Sri Lanka have withdrawn from the spring tour of England due to their players’ collective desire to compete in the IPL, while cricketers from the West Indies – called in as eleventh-hour replacements – are upset at being denied the opportunity to play the full five weeks in South Africa.”To me, the best thing the ICC could do is make a window for it,” McGrath said. “You’ll stop people having to make a decision. Some guys have to make a decision between playing for their country or go over there and play for six-to-eight weeks and pocket $2 million. As much as you’d like to think they’d have their priorities right, that’s a lot of money. You can set yourself up and have that security for your family.

“On the way out to the SCG one day, I got stopped at the traffic lights and someone handed $100 through the window from the car next door. They said, ‘We love what you doing with the foundation, and we want to support you.’ “

“[A window] would be a huge thing for cricket, and hopefully safeguard it against anything detrimental happening to the game. You’re not going to stop it. When I started playing, and the way I still feel now, Test match cricket is the ultimate. But now, with Twenty20 and the potential for what you can earn, soon people will be saying Twenty20 is the ultimate. I’d hate to see it affect Test cricket too much. Hopefully, if there’s that window there, you can get back and play Test cricket and focus on that.”McGrath will presumably attract much attention in India as he plies his trade for the Delhi Daredevils, but in his native Australia, it is his charitable work that has attracted most publicity of late. In January, Cricket Australia declared day three of the Sydney Test “Jane McGrath Day”, and SCG patrons responded by dressing in pink attire – the colour of the McGrath Foundation – and donating generously. Indeed, McGrath’s work for the foundation was recognised with his nomination for the prestigious Australian of the Year Award – more than a year after his retirement from cricket.”I’m just Jane McGrath’s husband these days,” he quips. “The support for the foundation has been amazing. To be honest I don’t know if it could’ve gone any smoother if I had a genie and three wishes.”On the way out to the SCG one day, I got stopped at the traffic lights and someone handed $100 through the window from the car next door. They said, ‘We love what you doing with the foundation, and we want to support you.’ I was a bit tired and probably a little bit grumpy, and that really picked me up. I thought, ‘That’s what it’s all about.’ It’s amazing how one little gesture can change your whole day. I still have to pinch myself with just how it went.”My involvement is increasing. I still have sponsors that I work for. I have to spend time with the kids. I still have to put bread and milk on the table. It would be great to do stuff for the foundation 24-7, but someone has got to pay the bills.”

De Bruyne must be unleashed vs Leipzig

Manchester City kick off their Champions League campaign on Wednesday night as they face Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig at The Etihad.

The Cityzens have had a strong start to the Premier League season with three wins from four games. Pep Guardiola’s side have won their last three league matches without scoring a goal, beating Leicester, Norwich and Arsenal – scoring 11 times in the process.

With City competing in multiple competitions and attempting to win more than one trophy, rotation and keeping players fresh is vitally important. Therefore, Guardiola may look to make a few changes to his side against Leizpig to freshen his XI up after the win over Leicester.

One player who the City boss needs to unleash against Leipzig is Belgian international midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, who is yet to start a competitive game for the club this season.

De Bruyne played 11 minutes off the bench against Tottenham on the opening day of the Premier League season and was an unused substitute against Leicester at the weekend. This suggests that he could now be back fit and in contention to play, as Guardiola deemed him ready enough to be used, if needed, against the Foxes.

The midfielder has shown that he has the quality to be a match-winner for the club. Earlier this year, former Blues defender Micah Richards hailed the 30-year-old as a complete footballer and said that he is one of the best in the world. He said:

“I’ve talked about De Bruyne for so long, he’s just incredible to watch. He says he’s played there before. He’s just a complete footballer.

“He can do both attacking and defensive work. It takes some beating to be better than him, it’s just absolutely incredible. I think he’s consistent.

“He’s so passionate and he wants to show the world what he can do because he’s an absolute gem of a player. He’s one of the best midfielders we’ve ever seen in the Premier League.”

De Bruyne has been named PFA Player of the Year in each of the past two seasons for City, accumulating 19 goals and 32 assists in the two campaigns combined. This shows that he is able to score and assist goals consistently, which is why he is able to be a match-winner for Guardiola.

Therefore, with the ex-Chelsea man now fit and available to play, Guardiola must unleash him against Leipzig this week in the Champions League. It will allow him to gain valuable match fitness to ease him into the season, which will prepare him for a return to Premier League action, whilst also boosting City’s chances of getting their European campaign off to a good start.

Southampton: Saints complete Dynel Simeu capture

Southampton have completed a deal for ex-Chelsea youngster Dynel Simeu, as their summer recruitment drive finally picks up some pace [GOAL].

The Lowdown: Southampton get ready for 2021/22

Progressing towards the new campaign, Saints manager Ralph Hassenhuttl will be looking to all scouting avenues in order to build a team capable of climbing the Premier League table in 2021/22.

So far, the South Coast outfit have tied up moves for Theo Walcott, Olly Lancashire and Romain Perraud [Transfermarkt].

Now, they have managed to ratify a fourth summer signing, with the new season now just a couple of weeks away,

The Latest: Simeu completes move to the South Coast

Following a breakdown in contract talks with former club Chelsea, Simeu now makes the move to Hampshire for around £1.5 million after leaving Stamford Bridge [GOAL].

Though he was out of contract in West London, the Blues have received a development fee due to their role in nurturing the 19-year-old through the youth ranks.

Growing up on the south coast, he has now returned home on a three-year-contract, keeping him at St Mary’s until 2024.

He will initially join up with the B team, but could follow an accelerated path into the senior squad should he impress at youth level.

The Verdict: Southampton will be the ideal environment for Simeu to continue his development

Proudly retaining a reputation for having one of the best academies in European football, Simeu’s addition will present an exciting prospect to the Southampton support.

Witnessing young prodigies such as the aforementioned Walcott, Gareth Bale and James Ward-Prowse break into the senior fold in recent times, the club have cultivated a model which is proven to provide long-term benefits to the football club.

In 2020/21, the Yaoundé-born centre-back registered two goal contributions in 23 appearances for the Chelsea Under-23’s side; one goal and one assist [Transfermarkt].

Promising to say the least, Simeu captained the Chelsea development squad to the 2019-20 Premier League Two title.

Despite this, he leaves his previous employers without making a first-string outing. Southampton will be keen to see how far his potential can stretch on the South Coast.

Sam Lee explains Doyle loan to Germany

The Athletic journalist Sam Lee has given an update on why Tommy Doyle was sent on loan this season to Hamburg SV in Bundesliga 2.

The Lowdown: Rising talent at City

The 19-year-old has been at the club since the age of eight and has made seven first-team appearances since being given his debut in October 2019 in a 3-1 victory over Southampton.

The midfielder spent large parts of last season with the City under-23 team as they won their first Premier League 2 title with 56 points. Doyle scored four times and supplied ten assists across 14 games whilst also playing four minutes in the Champions League victory over Olympiacos.

In the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, Doyle clocked up 168 minutes after starting against Bournemouth and Cheltenham respectively.

The Latest: Moving abroad for exposure

In an article f0r The Athletic, City correspondent  Lee has explained how Hamburg’s ‘long-standing interest’ in Doyle paid off, despite Championship duo Huddersfield Town and Swansea City making offers for her services.

It is believed that the club’s stature is one of the reasons City opted to send him to one of Germany’s biggest clubs, with the hope that he will begin playing regularly as the six-time Bundesliga winners look to return to the top flight at the fourth attempt.

With his experience of playing in front of large crowds with the first team, the club feel that playing in front of an average attendance of 17,000 or more at Hamburg will help his development and hopefully enable him to follow in the footsteps of Jude Bellingham to shine in Germany.

The Verdict: Different path but same outcome to Foden

The teenage sensation appears to be highly rated by Etihad Stadium chiefs and the opportunity to progress abroad comes at a perfect time for Doyle. Pep Guardiola claimed he has “special quality” after the midfielder impressed against Swansea in the FA Cup, while Lee noted that the 19-year-old ‘has stood out as a big-game player in his academy career’.

If he is to follow in the footsteps of Phil Foden, who didn’t even go out on loan, Doyle will be hoping to impress and help Die Rothosen back to the Bundesliga whilst catching the eye of Guardiola in the process.

With the world-class quality of Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan and Rodri in his midfield position, the exposure to a first-team environment could be priceless for the Manchester native as he continues his journey towards establishing himself at the Etihad.

Confident coach believes India 'capable of anything'

“If that’s the perception, then we’d like to change that,” said Gary Kirsten, when someone mentioned India’s rather ordinary record when it comes to fourth-innings pursuits

“If that’s the perception, then we’d like to change that,” said Gary Kirsten, when someone mentioned India’s rather ordinary record when it comes to fourth-innings pursuits. “This team is capable of anything and we believe we have the players to do some special stuff on a cricket field.” Given that the pitch hasn’t fallen apart in the manner that was predicted by many, such optimism isn’t entirely misplaced, but it’s safe to say India will need to play out of their skins and hope for a helping hand from any clouds in the neighbourhood.”England have played very well to get into the position they are in right now,” Kirsten said. “But there are still 180 overs left in this Test, so let’s see what we can do.” At one point, with Kevin Pietersen trudging back to the pavilion and the scoreboard showing 43 for 3, India were laughing, but there were more than a few tense and pinched faces when they walked off at 5pm. By then, Paul Collingwood and Andrew Strauss, dropped on 15 by Dhoni the over after Pietersen’s exit, had added 129, and emphatically blunted the Indian threat.”We have tried everything,” Kirsten said. “MS [Mahendra Singh Dhoni] captained the side really well, specifically today. If you ask me if he could have done anything differently, I will say no. At the end of the day when you look back, our bowlers have done everything they could have. But we were up against a team that played better than us today.”Kirsten refused to blame the circumstances leading up to the game for India’s plight – “We were very well prepared for this Test match” – and was effusive in his praise for Strauss, whose gritty batting had more than a few shades of Kirsten the batsman.”He played exceptionally well in this Test match. He is an experienced Test player and he understood the conditions very well. He also understood the bowlers that he was going to face. We had some plans against him but he understood what he needed to do and played very well.”The bowlers managed only one maiden over [Yuvraj Singh] until Zaheer Khan strung three together late in the day, but as far as Kirsten was concerned, it was a case of England playing better than India playing badly.”Test matches are a battle,” he said. “We are going to face teams that will play well against us. I don’t think it was the case that we are playing bad Test cricket. Our bowlers did a good job. We know we should have put some more runs on the board.”Given Rahul Dravid’s run-drought though, there could certainly be a tweak or two in the line-up when India emerge to chase a target. “We are keeping that for later,” Kirsten said, and the lack of a forceful denial suggest that it was certainly an option. “We’re always thinking about what we can do with our plans with bat and ball. But we’re not going to make any drastic changes.”The pitch will come in for increasing scrutiny as the match progresses, but Kirsten refused to be too perturbed by thoughts of a final-day dustbowl. “There’s no doubt if you land the ball in certain areas, it’s going to do something. But we have also seen that people can bat on it, if you can spend time on the crease.”There aren’t too many balls that make it unpleasant, and the bounce is even. There will be a little bit reverse [swing], but we are confident that we can bat on it. We won’t be going there tomorrow thinking that we have lost the game. That’s for sure.”His players now need to justify that faith.

Win over sponsors, WICB chief tells players

Donald Peters, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chief executive, has urged the national team to “start winning in order to attract sponsors”.

Donald Peters, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chief executive, has urged the national team to “start winning in order to attract sponsors”. The WICB failed to get sponsors for the domestic one- and four-day competitions this season, but Peters reaffirmed that the board had enough funds of its own to cover the expenses.”I have already told the West Indies cricketers that they must start winning in order to help us in attracting sponsors,” Peters told the . “When this happens everybody wants to come on board and this would put us in a better position given the current financial crisis around the world.”I am happy to announce that this money being used to run the regional first-class series is not from a loan but from our resources that we have put away, in order to keep our cricket going,” he said. “This will tell you that the board is a well-financed and well-run unit and is not being mismanaged. We understand the current financial crisis and we know that sponsorships are difficult but we are going to make that extra effort to keep things going smoothly.”The WICB had estimated an expenditure of around US$1.5 million to organise the tournaments. KFC and Carib Beer had been the previous sponsors of the WICB Cup (the one-day tournament) and the four-day competition respectively, but this year the board failed to get “significant sponsorships”. “Even at the level of the board’s executive, we will be looking to cut costs and even if it means having less meetings and more cricket, then we will do just that,” he said.Peters, though, is confident of a turnaround for the 2010 season. “I have been in talks with a number of people and I am optimistic that next season we would have a good sponsor on board,” he said. “When you get sponsorship you have to be careful of what you are allowing. Sometimes you get a sponsor and they give you a certain amount of money and when you advertise and construct billboards and all these things, the money is spent there. When situations like these arise, I say to myself it’s better I go it alone.”The WICB’s relationship with Digicel, “the primary sponsor of West Indies cricket”, has hardly been rosy, and the rights row ahead of the Stanford Super Series has also put into doubt financial backing from Allen Stanford, the Antigua-based billionaire.

Celtic: Odsonne Edouard update emerges

Ligue 1 side Nice are submitting a bid for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Giakoumakis to arrive?

The Hoops appear to be making progress in bringing a striker in of their own before the end of the month.

Reports linked Celtic with a move for VVV-Venlos’s Georgios Giakoumakis earlier in the week, and it is believed that a bid has now been accepted for the Greece international.

It could well be a case of one in, one out at Celtic Park, with an update provided on Nice’s links with Edouard.

The Latest: Source shares update

Football Insider shared a story on Thursday where pundit Kevin Campbell gave his thoughts on the situation.

In their report, they shared the latest from a Celtic source, who claimed that a bid is being submitted by Nice. They didn’t share how much that would be worth, but it is understood the Hoops may have to accept less than £20m.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-12/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Sell

Edouard has been a fine servant to Celtic and has been a regular under Ange Postecoglou this season, but with the forward working on a Parkhead exit, the club should look to sell if they land Giakoumakis.

The 23-year-old, labelled as ‘superb’ by Darryl Broadfoot and hailed by John Hartson last year, is into the final 12 months of his contract.

If Celtic don’t cash in this month, they could risk losing him for nothing over the coming months, not exactly ideal when the Hoops were after £40m last summer.

He’d be free to discuss a possible pre-contract agreement in the New Year, so it seems to be the time for Dominic McKay to cash in if the incoming bid from Nice is reasonable.

In other news: Celtic snub: McKay target has now turned down Parkhead move after pleading for Glasgow switch.
